Rising 850 feet above Chicago’s Loop, Chase Tower is one of the city’s most imposing skyscrapers. Its sweeping inward curve, massive granite facade, sunken plaza, enormous open interiors, and monolithic crown give it an almost dystopian appearance. But that intimidating design was the result of a very deliberate combination of corporate ambition, radical modern architecture, and cutting-edge engineering.
Originally built as the headquarters of First National Bank of Chicago, the tower pushed 1960s engineering to its limits. Early IBM computers helped engineers analyze its unusual structure, while 40,000 tons of steel and 17,000 tons of granite transformed the skyline. We’ll also explore the building’s connection to European modernism, its famous Four Seasons mosaic by Marc Chagall, its connection to Barack and Michelle Obama, and how First National became Bank One before ultimately becoming Chase Tower.
