00:04Nick, how we doing? And I thought you had a crazy weekend. I'm excited to hear about it.
00:12Yeah, so...
00:14We'll preface this. You're a big poker guy. I don't think a lot of people know this.
00:19So yeah, I mean, it seems the poker world knows. I don't know.
00:24The people that watch First Things First loyally, Wilds and Brew, are always making fun of me for jetting off
00:32to Vegas to play cards, as Brew puts it.
00:36And Fox has been really, really great to me forever in that they've always been cool with me doing the
00:46one broadcasting I do outside of Fox and the podcast is poker broadcasting.
00:53Like, last year, I did the main event final table part of it, when Michael the Grinder Mizraki won the
01:01main event in one of the sickest runs in poker history.
01:05And I am one of the official voices of Poker Goes, what I would consider their second flagship show.
01:13Their main flagship show is the historically great high-stakes poker that's been on forever.
01:18And then their secondary show is this show called No Gamble, No Future, which is what I, you know, high
01:25-stakes poker to, you know, 99.9% of the world, but not high, high-stakes poker like what they
01:32have.
01:33With a little extra stuff, there's like a wheel of pain, there's little things to make it more fun for
01:38the viewers and players.
01:40But myself, Brent Hanks, who is a poker pro-turned-broadcaster-turned-CEO of the company, and Jared Blesnick, are
01:49the three voices of No Gamble, No Future.
01:51And this past weekend, there were a couple games that I was supposed to go and broadcast the games over
01:59the weekend for them to be released on Poker Goes YouTube and Poker Goes Regular channel.
02:04That's crazy.
02:05So, before we get into the actual weekend itself, have you been into poker since before your Fox Sports career?
02:12Oh, yeah.
02:13No, I mean, it's the...
02:15My wife, you know, has joked with me forever that, you know, we've been together for, gosh, almost 20 years
02:23now, that her old time, she's known me.
02:27I've had two hobbies, building Legos and playing poker.
02:31And I love them both equally.
02:35No, when I grew up playing cards, you know, I've said this before, but, like, gambling really, you know,
02:45runs in my blood.
02:46My mom's father, who lived to be in his early 90s, up until, you know, months before he passed, was
02:56at the horse track in Florida three or four days a week.
03:00My own father, before he became, you know, a respectable member of society and on the Kansas City Fire Department,
03:11you know, was a part of Kansas City's underground gambling scene and was, you know, the stick man for some
03:20craps games that I'm not sure were on the up and up entirely.
03:24And so I started playing poker with my dad and with my grandfather when I was probably eight or nine.
03:36And then when I was in high school is when the poker boom happened, when it was all over TV
03:43and me and my buddies would play.
03:45And then when I went to college at Syracuse and 40 minutes outside of Syracuse is a place called Turning
03:52Stone Casino that because it's on a Native American reservation,
03:56you only have to be 18 years old.
03:58And so I played there and I ended up getting in some of the underground Syracuse games on South Salina
04:08Street.
04:08I think I can say that now it's been 25 years in Syracuse.
04:12And then fresh out of college, when I moved back to Kansas City to do radio, Kansas City's got four
04:20full-fledged real brick-and-mortar casinos.
04:24And months after college, I was on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and won $50,000.
04:30And that kind of, hey, I was making eight bucks an hour, so it paid for my life.
04:35But it also gave me, you know, a poker bankroll, so to speak.
04:39And yeah, I've played ever since.
04:43And then it's really been since I moved to New York 10 years ago, I got, it went more from
04:55hobby to let's see how good I can actually get at this.
05:01And then through my, you know, through no poker go, and, you know, again, this is maybe too long of
05:10a story.
05:10I don't know.
05:11I, I, once I really started to get into it, I became friendly with Phil Hellmuth.
05:18Uh, and yeah.
05:20Yeah, and so, seven years ago, six years ago, five years ago, I don't know, it was the first time
05:26I ever played on stream, on TV, uh, at Poker Go.
05:31Hellmuth was in the game.
05:33There was a cash game that I lost in, a cash game that I won a very little bit in,
05:38and then a sit-and-go tournament that ended up with, you know, started with eight people.
05:45Bruce Buffer was one of them, Daniel Negreanu, Jennifer Tilly, Phil Hellmuth.
05:50Um, it came down to me and Hellmuth, heads up, at the end, and I won.
05:56No.
05:56Um, and I then took that as an opportunity.
06:00They were doing a, a series of heads-up matches, $50,000 a person, and Hellmuth beat Negreanu three times
06:08in a row, then beat Antonio Esfandiari, who's become my dear friend, three times in a row.
06:13So, and I hit up Poker Go, and I was like, he's beating all the pros, what if he takes
06:17on an amateur?
06:20And, so, I put up the money, and went to Vegas, and played him heads-up in a six-hour
06:26war that he ended up beating me in.
06:29And that was the moment I was like, you know what?
06:31I, I went back and re-watched it, saw, and I was like, I, I want to try to get
06:36really good at this.
06:37Um, and I've spent a lot of time, uh, and, you know, the way to get good at Poker is
06:44playing Poker, so it's an investment, too, um, in trying to learn the game, get better at the game, and
06:52become more part of that scene.
06:55And now I play in the, you know, on the streams a lot.
06:58I play, you know, I, and I've become, I think the, when we and I, when you and I last
07:03talked, it was about that 200-to-1 bet I made.
07:06Yes, on the Timberwolves.
07:07And I mentioned on there that the guys who shared the bet with me, one was a guy called TVK.
07:16His name is Taylor Von Kriegenberg.
07:18He is one of the most naturally gifted poker players in the world.
07:23He doesn't play all that often, but when he does play, he plays tournament, like, the highest of high-roller
07:29tournaments that cost, like, $100,000 to enter.
07:32He has an incredible success.
07:34And another person on that, in that with me, was Nick Shulman, who legitimately is, with respect to the other
07:41greats, the world's greatest living card player.
07:44Like, he was just a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
07:49He plays all of the games at an A-plus level.
07:53And those two guys have become my dear friends.
07:57And it's, I don't even know what to comp it to.
08:01It's like a, it would be as if a recreational golfer that's like, I want to one day be a
08:07scratch golfer,
08:08was dear friends with Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
08:13And they are just regularly like, hey, let me look at your swing and try to help you out.
08:19That's what those guys have been to me.
08:22And so, it has given me a real access to the best minds in the world at this.
08:29And then my, you know, my notoriety, whatever you want to call it.
08:34My professional job has probably given me access to games that otherwise, like some, you know, these are private-ish
08:44games.
08:45Like, you can't just be like, I want to play.
08:47But, you know, I'm the annoying guy on TV.
08:49So, they're like, ah, that guy can play.
08:51And, you know, so that's kind of been the path.
08:54That's a long story, but that's the path.
08:56Well, it's interesting that you bring it up.
08:58Because, like, when you're around all those, like, elite-level, like, minds in the poker game.
09:02And I've played a good amount of poker myself as well at casinos.
09:06Foxwoods Resort and Casino.
09:07I was there every summer for, like, I was getting two free nights a week comped in college.
09:12And I was there every week, two nights a week.
09:15I was like, I'm allowed to be here for two nights.
09:18I'm going to be here for two nights.
09:19I would just play poker nonstop, you know, 10-hour sessions.
09:23So, you know, poker is famous.
09:26Poker players are famously known for, like, winning the Circa Survivor Pools.
09:30Yes.
09:31Right?
09:31Like, those minds are top tier.
09:35You know, is that something that you're aware of, obviously?
09:39Oh, yeah.
09:40Yeah, no, so, like, so, you know, I'm the, so, I mean, Splash Sports, which is, you know, has their
09:49own 21, now it's $21 million for first place for Survivor this year.
09:54Shortly after I played Hellmuth Heads Up, he told me about this company that he was an investor in, Splash
10:02Sports.
10:04And introduced me to the guys that run it, and, you know, and I've worked with them ever since.
10:11You mentioned Galen Hall last year had, there were six people, I think, that, six entries that won Circa.
10:18Galen Hall had two of the six, one guy.
10:21And he's a former professional poker player.
10:25Yeah, there is, you know, there, I don't want to, arguably, one of the most, I don't want to name
10:34names, because I, but, one of the most famous poker players of all time is currently, arguably, the world's sharpest
10:41sports better.
10:42So there is just a huge overlap in those communities, which is, oh, I've got a great story, great story,
10:50that's totally relevant.
10:54About four years ago, there was a period, Colin on his show, his Blazin' Five, and me on my show,
11:04Nick's Picks, we were both, like, right around, like, 58, 60%.
11:09Like, we were both killing.
11:12And I, one day, got a DM from Doyle Brunson, the, you know, arguably the greatest poker player ever to
11:21live.
11:22He has since passed away.
11:23Because he watched a bunch of sports TV and told me that whenever Colin and I, in each of our
11:32separate picks, when we had the same game picked, that was one of his biggest bets of the week every
11:39week, was when we, he and I, when we overlapped.
11:41And, through that DM, he and I developed a relationship to where, a few months before he passed, I was
11:52in Vegas and he invited me over to his home to watch Sunday football with him.
11:57Um, I remember which game it was, was the last time the Bengals beat the Chiefs, uh, in the regular
12:03season.
12:03I watched it sitting with Texas Dolly, with, you know, a true Mount Rushmore poker figure.
12:10But so many of these poker guys are big sports guys.
12:14And so it, you know, and so there is a massive overlap.
12:17Because ultimately, like, they're just, the best poker players are sharp.
12:22They're just sharp in everything.
12:24Like, if, if there is, if this is plus expected value, if it's plus EV, they're in on it.
12:30Um, and so, yeah, I mean, it's been, it's been really, really unbelievable to become a part of the community.
12:37Yeah, yeah.
12:37I mean, you know, you know, they're able to understand probability at a pace that is, uh, not normal towards
12:45the rest of society.
12:46And then the last question before we, uh, talk about the weekend, broadcasting.
12:50You're broadcasting for, uh, for poker is, uh, is this, how long you've been doing broadcasting, uh, in the poker
12:57world?
12:57And then, um, is this like a leap off point to doing more broadcasting in that?
13:02So, listen, I mean, I am, you know, I am one of the voices in No Gamble, No Future.
13:06So that's like, you know, what kind of a side job I have.
13:09I, the, my, I had done, you know, I popped in the booth a few times over the last, you
13:15know, four years ago, five years ago with Jeff Platt and Brent Hanks, uh, and some other people.
13:21My first big, big moment doing it was, um, was the final table of the main event, which was very
13:29nice.
13:30I kind of got to skip the line in that regard just to do a piece of that, uh, fact
13:35of the truth of the matter is one of the reasons I like doing it is, and I hope this
13:40doesn't read or come across arrogantly.
13:44I, I, it, I, it shouldn't, I enjoy doing broadcasting that I'm not yet good at.
13:53I'm not yet a good poker broadcaster.
13:55I don't, I, I haven't, I haven't done it enough to be like what I consider good at it.
14:02Um, and it's really like, it pushes me to try to like, um, improve, you know, the, I, I'm not
14:12saying I have room to improve everywhere.
14:13I'm not saying I'm some great general broadcaster, but I've been doing TV for 10 years.
14:19I've been doing podcasting slash radio for 23 years.
14:24Like I'm at least solid, you know what I, and poker broadcasting has been very different.
14:31And sometimes like I, you know, watch back, you know, a show that I did and I'm like, well, you
14:38screwed up six things in the first hour.
14:40Like, and so that part's been, I do enjoy doing it.
14:43I will keep doing it as long as they'll have me doing it.
14:45But it's also, you know, I don't even know if humbling is the right word.
14:49It just, it is, it, it is, it is good to have something that you're kind of a neophyte at
14:55that you're trying to improve on.
14:57Yeah.
14:58Yeah.
14:58And that's the best way to get good at something is, or just, it's just good to try things that
15:01you're not good at.
15:02You know what I mean?
15:02Like I'm, I, I'm a, I do jujitsu.
15:05I'm bad.
15:05I like, I'm not bad at it, but I mean, there's always a bigger fish.
15:09That's really cool though.
15:10Yeah.
15:10There's always a bigger fish.
15:11So this past weekend, you had a crazy weekend and I, I don't know the story, but I'm really excited
15:18to hear it.
15:18Um, yeah, I mean, so it's pretty straightforward in this regard.
15:22I got, um, so this weekend was, uh, Friday, Russell Westbrook had his annual charity poker event, which usually has
15:37a couple tournaments.
15:38Um, one of them is, you know, a hundred thousand dollar a person entry that NBA guys play in some
15:46poker, high, high rollers playing business people play in, but it all, it goes towards, you know, Russell's charity endeavors.
15:53Um, it also happened to be this weekend in Vegas, Andrew Roble, who is probably the single most accomplished streamed
16:05cash game player and high stakes cash game player in the world.
16:07His 40th birthday, which was in Vegas.
16:11And because of that, there were a lot of, a lot of folks who aren't always in Vegas, in Vegas
16:18at one time.
16:19So no gamble, no future wanted to put together a really good streamed game.
16:24And so they got Antonio S. Fondiari, uh, you know, the magician is, was nickname is one of the best
16:32poker, a hall of fame poker player, Jen Tilly, the famous actress who was married.
16:37She was married to a great poker player in Phil Locke, but a great player in her own right, who
16:42plays in a lot of the televised high stakes games.
16:45Um, she was going to play Michael, the grinder, Ms. Rocky, who just went in the poker hall of fame,
16:52won the main event in 2025.
16:53And the most prestigious tournament, the poker players championship for the fourth time he won it, which is unprecedented.
17:01He was playing Greg Mueller, who just finished third in the main event, a retired pro hockey player turned professional
17:07gambler, poker player.
17:09He was playing in it, uh, Darren Feinstein, who's a Vegas mainstay, a very successful Vegas businessman.
17:16He was playing in it.
17:18Um, Turbo Fam is, I think his name, who's more of a Las Vegas cash games player, but a very
17:23accomplished player in his own right.
17:25And I don't want to leave anybody out.
17:28Let me see if I'm forgetting.
17:29Oh, um, no, that was supposed to be the whole, well, that, that was the lineup along with a couple
17:36other people.
17:39Those couple other people at the last minute dropped out.
17:44And so they needed to add a player.
17:49Jared Blesnick is in a, who's one of the broadcasters.
17:52He owns Bles sports cards.
17:55Um, so he, that's his real business now, but there was a point in time where he might've been the
18:01best heads up pot limit Omaha player in the world.
18:04He still plays the highest stakes mix games in the world.
18:09Um, it, you know, it's not that he's not like allowed to join the game, but the other players at
18:17the table are probably not like super stoked.
18:20Like, oh, okay.
18:20Like all of a sudden we have a new player and it's, you know, one of the best players in
18:26the world.
18:26Like, so the other option was I jump in.
18:30And while I wanted to do the broadcasting, I was like, I'm dear friends with Antonio.
18:36The last time, and I, this I tweeted about the last time I was in Vegas, the weekend I made
18:42that, that bet.
18:43That was off the heels of playing in a streamed game at poker go with Antonio, where at the very
18:50end of the night, um, I made, you know, I, I went all in for, I mean, the numbers are
19:00crazy, but for like $67,000 and Antonio called with the worst hand.
19:06And at the very end of the night, I went from a cent of buying into that game for $25
19:12,000 to being more than a hundred thousand dollar winner.
19:16Um, so like I had played with Antonio before I had felt good vibes from it.
19:22He's my buddy.
19:23We talked, he's not really a sport.
19:25So he's not a huge sports guy.
19:27So when he has like a sports question, he hits me up.
19:29I'm like, Antonio's playing.
19:30I've played with Jen before.
19:32I know that I was like, I'll play.
19:34I was like, these other, you know, Antonio is going to buy into this game for a quarter of a
19:37million dollars.
19:38You know, there's people are going to be playing Darren Feinstein plays in games where he buys in for a
19:44million dollars.
19:45Like heavy hitters, this game should be tamer, but I'm going to sit with 40 grand, which is, again, I
19:53understand these numbers are crazy.
19:55Like that's an enormous amount of money, but in this game, it was not like in this game.
20:00It was not mall stack.
20:01Like I'm, I'm going to sit with 40 grand and, you know, see how I do.
20:06And, you know, the players were happy to see me.
20:09I talk, you know, I'm, I'm obviously not a pro like, so nobody objected to me joining the game.
20:15Oddly at the end of the night, Darren had to leave.
20:18So Blez joined the game anyway to fill the seat.
20:21Um, but yeah, so that's how it started.
20:24It was kind of by chance.
20:25I got a seat in the game.
20:27So you run through and do you just, are you just ripping from the beginning and you're, you're just, you're
20:33crushing or how long, how long did it take for, uh, for it to go through the, to the end?
20:37So, you know, I, I jotted down a few hands.
20:40I, very early on, uh, I made a really good call, uh, with the board was 10, eight, three, deuce,
20:56four with two spades, two clubs and a four diamonds.
21:01It was a bomb pot.
21:02I had jacked deuce of spades and gin.
21:06So I bottom pair and I blocked the spades, which you don't really want to do because you want other
21:12people to have space.
21:13It doesn't matter.
21:14Um, and gin made a big bet on the river and I thought about it for a while and I
21:19called and she had ace high.
21:21So that kind of got me off and running, um, uh, a couple of hands later, um, call with bottom
21:30pair is, is pretty, it was pretty good.
21:32No, I play, I, I, I, that made me feel good.
21:35It also, maybe I, I'm not supposed to call there with my hand, but whatever.
21:39A couple of hands later though, I had pocket fours on ace nine, four flop and turbo.
21:49Yeah.
21:49It sounds fantastic.
21:50Turbo had pocket nines.
21:52So it was set over set and hold them.
21:53But luckily because I had won the big pot off gin, I had turbo covered.
21:59So even though I doubled him up now, it was kind of just back to starting stack.
22:03So that was the first two, after two hours, I'm basically, you know, right or an hour, right around starting
22:10stack where I started.
22:12And then I, I, I, I, I think I played the best four hours of poker in my life.
22:20And I, you know, and when I went back and rewatched it, like every big fold I made, except for
22:27one hand to turbo, I was right.
22:29You know, I, the, when I, when I thought I was bluffing and needed to bluff, when, once I went
22:35back and saw, you know, watching it, what the other person had, I was right.
22:40And I was just really, really dialed in.
22:44And then Blez, after he sat down, he and I played one big hand where he was bluffing the whole
22:54way.
22:54And I called him two streets and then he gave up on the end and then the game's called.
23:00And I know that I'm in the game for 40, I bought in for 40 and I never re-bought.
23:05So it's very easy to tell exactly what I'm in the game for.
23:09And we're counting down the chips and I count it and I look at, I'm like, count it again.
23:16And then Paul, the best poker room manager in the world, floor man, comes over to, you know, confirm everything.
23:26And in front of me is $250,200.
23:33And I, you know, I couldn't, I mean, it's not that I couldn't believe it.
23:37Like I was playing, like I knew, I knew I had won.
23:40I knew I was up a lot, but that's a, you know what I mean?
23:44Like I, yeah, I mean, I, yeah, to, to 5X, to profit, I get, yeah, 6X in total, 5X in
23:53profit, my buy-in to, you know, as, you know, someone that is not at all that far removed from
24:03this amount of money represents multiple years of radio.
24:09Like, uh, it was pretty unbelievable.
24:13And then to go back and re-watch it and see that it wasn't that I, like, the whole night
24:19I didn't get aces, kings, queens, jacks, or ace, king one time.
24:24I didn't, like, get hit with the deck.
24:25I didn't, you know, I, it wasn't coolering people left and right.
24:28I played really well.
24:30And, uh, and it was really sick.
24:32Like, I know that sound, I'm not trying to sound like anything, but I just, I, I, you know, I've
24:38really, really, like, worked hard at trying to get good at something.
24:41And again, it's a tiny sample.
24:43It's 200 hands.
24:45Got to pay off though.
24:45Um, but yeah, so it was really sick.
24:48Um, and to do it at that table with Antonio and Grindr and Jen and Greg, all those people, like,
24:54was, it wasn't, you know, me and a bunch of other people who are, you know, noteworthy for other things.
25:01It was me and five professional poker players plus Jen, who's a famous actress, but also plays a ton of
25:08poker.
25:09Are you going to buy anything cool?
25:11Uh, well, I'll.
25:13Got to reward yourself, right?
25:14But the answer, so it's funny.
25:16I text my wife about it.
25:19She was watching our grandbaby in LA and I, you know, I think she bought herself some cool things.
25:28Um, I.
25:29It's her labor.
25:31Both of my daughters always say that they're on a 5% free roll on my poker.
25:38They, I have not told them about this.
25:42We'll see if they read.
25:44Um, but they, they'll be able to do the math of what 5% of 200 grand is.
25:50That's pretty straightforward math.
25:52Um, but, um, yeah, I mean, I don't, you know, I don't, I think we, I occasionally will from gambling
26:03winnings, buy myself a watch as like a trophy.
26:07Um, so maybe I'll do that, uh, or maybe I'll reinvest it in the next poker game.
26:14I don't know.
26:15I mean, you know, you get, you know, this is, you're like, ah, you know, that was, you know, that's
26:20something.
26:20But I am, you know, I, unironically, I am actually back in Vegas in a week.
26:28Uh, my co-host and best friend of 20 plus years, Danny Parkins, he's turning 40.
26:35It's also, and I told him beforehand I was going to take him to Vegas for his 40th birthday.
26:40And we'd, you know, he wants to golf and we'll watch the Chiefs happen to be playing in Vegas and
26:45with the, against the Raiders that weekend.
26:47So we'll do football and, you know, listen, I mean, I am a gambler.
26:51Like I, the, you know, it's, the money's in play.
26:56Like the, like the, we're going to, the, but yeah, I mean, it is, it was, it was really cool.
27:03And I just, I, you know, you put a lot of time into something and you'd like to see it
27:07pay off in some way.
27:08No, yeah, a hundred percent.
27:10Um, you know, you, Russell Westbrook's, it's a Russell Westbrook poker tournament.
27:14Ever worry at basketball players, poker.
27:17We saw the Chauncey Billups thing pop up.
27:19Is there ever something that pops up in your head?
27:22No.
27:22So certainly not.
27:23The Russ's thing is a charity event.
27:26Like, you know what I mean?
27:27Like that, it's a really cool thing that he does.
27:30Um, I, what I would say is the, it is the, and, and again, like,
27:38Chauncey, it's just so everybody's like clear on it.
27:43There is no, no allegations that Chauncey's poker stuff was impacting his coat.
27:54Like it wasn't a point shaving thing.
27:56It was not a, what they're alleging about Malik Beasley and these other guys.
28:01Um, so I don't worry about that stuff really at all.
28:05What I, what I would say, and I said this on my pod is to like the, the athletes is
28:12anybody
28:14that is playing high stakes poker outside of a casino, a little bit inside of a casino,
28:21but outside of a casino needs to always be on alert for two things.
28:29One is the game might be being cheated.
28:33Like you, like that is you, it is absolutely on the board that either people are colluding
28:39or there's something not on the up and out or the deck is set.
28:42Like you've got to be dialed on those things.
28:45And the other thing is, yeah, right.
28:48And the other thing is it's, you know, it's one thing to win a lot of money in a card
28:55game
28:56outside of a casino.
28:58It's another thing to get paid the money you won in a card game outside of a casino.
29:03And so like it is, and that doesn't even mention, I guess the general risk of like, you know,
29:08robbery or violence or whatever it is, but like you, it is, it's one of the reasons I
29:13have so much respect for professional gamblers.
29:15There are so many things you got to deal with.
29:17You got to, you got to A, get good.
29:20Then you have to prevent against being cheated.
29:23Then you have to be able to overcome all the times you win and get stiffed.
29:29Like there, you know, there's, it's a lot, a lot of it.
29:32And so I would say for like the professional athletes that play a lot of cards, I would
29:41always be leery of the great game you get invited to if you know what I mean?
29:48Because there, there just is, there, there is a lot of in this gambling, like there's a
29:55lot of, there's a lot of, you know, seedy characters involved.
29:59Um, but you know, Russ actually, I've never played with Russ.
30:03Russ, from what I've been told has become an excellent card player, like an excellent
30:09card player.
30:10Um, and his charity event, I know for the pros, like I would never, never is a big word, but
30:16I never have and couldn't imagine, you know, paying a hundred thousand dollars to play in
30:22a poker tournament, even if it's charity poker tournament, it's just like such a crazy amount
30:25of money.
30:26Um, Russ's charity of poker stuff are some of the best events in the poker community
30:32all year.
30:32Like he does such a great job with that.
30:34That's awesome.
30:35Well, that's freaking awesome.
30:37Nick, first things first, Emmy nominated?
