00:02:48shifty he is, the first step he has.

00:02:52And he's unlike really any running back that I've seen.

00:02:56We kind of talked a little bit about how he looked like Le'Veon Bell a little bit with

00:02:59just his patience.

00:05:10Well, you can't, like, have a cohesive unit.

00:05:12That's, like, the biggest thing.

00:05:14When you are playing next to, say you're playing left guard, you're playing next to a center and a left

00:05:18tackle that you're very comfortable with.

00:05:20All offseason, all training camp, and then, you know, third week of preseason, someone goes down and you have to

00:05:26learn the tendencies and techniques of a new player.

00:05:30It throws off your whole timing, game, hand placement, hat placement.

00:05:34So it's hard.

00:05:36And I'm sure, yes, they are professionals.

00:05:37Like, they have to be able to adjust, but at the same time, like, it is weird just getting to

00:05:43know a whole other player and their playing style and putting it out there going against a defense and really

00:05:49good linebackers.

00:05:50But I just wanted to say this one thing.

00:05:52Did you see the one Packers fan that actually checked her own pulse?

00:05:57That killed me.

00:05:59She was down so bad.

00:06:00She went with the pulse.

00:06:02She didn't know she was on camera.

00:06:11So, I mean, yeah, disastrous night for Green Bay.

00:06:14As Mikey's getting to, the offensive line's a big problem right now.

00:06:17They can't stay on schedule.

00:06:19Coming into this game, they were dead last in the NFL in third down percentage.

00:06:23They're constantly in third and long, constantly behind the chains, and the ripple effects are massive.

00:06:28And Jordan Love is a good quarterback that can flash as great, but he is not elite.

00:06:36Because what a truly elite guy can do, and it's so weird.

00:06:39It's maybe three to four guys in the league, is when you have those offensive line problems, they can mask

00:06:45them.

00:06:45They can mask them with their decision making, getting the ball out.

00:06:48They can mitigate the damage.

00:06:50A quarterback at Love's tier, which is still good, right?

00:06:53That's a tier that many should strive to be in if too much stuff starts to go wrong around them.

00:06:58They're not able to put the superhero cape on like some of the top guys in the league.

00:07:05And then speaking of quarterback, you look at the Falcons guys.

00:07:07All of a sudden, Michael Penix comes back, and a team that looked woefully incompetent didn't have a single red

00:07:12zone snap coming into last night.

00:07:15Suddenly, offensively, Chief looked dominant.

00:07:21Both Bichon and Drake had 194 exactly.

00:07:25Yeah, and I think people were already throwing dirt on Michael Penix, too.

00:09:15It doesn't mean that he's not very good, that he won't be very good elsewhere, but you both kind of

00:09:20need a new partner.

00:11:09So, Minnesota's got their own weird quarterback issues where Kyle Murray's coming back.

00:11:12You have the Packers now who look like they're completely done.

00:11:17What do you make of that?

00:11:18And then the Lions, who are kind of up in the air, but now it looks like maybe the pathway

00:11:22is there because they have their quarterback.

00:11:24Like, what do you make of the North at this point?

00:11:26Yeah, it's one of those things where I think you just got to trust that Brian Flores defense.

00:11:33Like, you don't know about Wentz or Murray or what's going to go on with their offense, but that defense

00:11:38is going to show up.

00:11:39That defense is going to travel.

00:11:40You feel like they're going to be able to get through that division and get, you know, 10, 11 wins

00:11:47just because the defense is so dynamic.

00:11:49And this might be my own bias after watching what they did to the Bears last week.

00:11:53But the defense is going to be real.

00:11:55I still think the Bears are going to be in the mix.

00:11:57And I just think the top three are going to battle it out all year.

00:12:01And the Packers, they just, I've never seen them this far off of it.

00:12:05So, and I don't mean obviously that graphic, but they just look so lost.

00:12:09It's hard to imagine them coming back.

00:12:11But, yeah, I mean, throw a dart at the other three teams.

00:12:13I think it's wide open between the three of them.

00:12:15And then you look at the NFC South, a very similar situation where the traditional power, at least in the

00:12:23recent era,

00:12:23the Tampa Bay Buccaneers appear to maybe be the most discombobulated group.

00:12:31But, like, the Panthers won it last year, and they've had a tale of two games.

00:12:35But, like, Bryce Young looks like he's actually good.

00:12:37Tyler Shug and the Saints look actually good.

00:12:40And it's impossible after what the Falcons did last night to not get a little excited about them

00:12:45because every problem they had the first two weeks seemingly can be explained away by quarterback Dana.

00:12:51Yeah, I think this is a division that might end up having a winner that has, like, eight or nine

00:39:53And I want to talk about quarterbacks, right?

00:39:57The American Kings.

00:39:59It's a position that in our society is as close as you can get to royalty, to be like a

00:40:07mythological hero of old.

00:40:09If you become one of the legends on Sunday, you achieve that most rare of accomplishments.

00:40:16You become immortal, right?

00:40:18Your name is passed down from generation to generation.

00:40:21Fathers tell their sons, and their sons tell their sons.

00:40:24Cities, states, entire countries will celebrate you.

00:40:29While you're alive, you get your roses.

00:40:32But the avenue to get there is perilous.

00:40:35And if you want to do it on Sunday, you do.

00:40:37You know where it starts?

00:40:37It starts on Saturday.

00:40:39And guess what, guys?

00:40:40Fortunes can change quickly.

00:40:42And this is what I love about sports in general, okay?

00:40:45It is a true meritocracy, right?

00:40:48We would like to believe life is that way.

00:40:50You work hard, and if you put in the hard work, you're going to find success.

00:40:53Unfortunately, that's just not the case.

00:40:56Sometimes you get unlucky.

00:40:57Sometimes you don't have the right connection.

00:40:58This and that.

00:40:59That ain't how it is in football, okay?

00:41:02It doesn't matter who your dad is.

00:41:03It doesn't matter how much money you make.

00:41:05It doesn't matter where you play.

00:41:06All that matters is how you play.

00:41:09And it doesn't even matter what we think, because you control what we think.

00:41:12And again, we talk about fortune change.

00:41:14Look at Garrett Nussmeyer, right?

00:41:16Coming into his last year's senior, he's supposed to be a top-five pick, guaranteed first-rounder.

00:41:20He ends up in the seventh because it doesn't go well.

00:41:23Look at Dante Moore.

00:41:24What's happened to him this season?

00:41:26They say he would have been a top-five pick in last year's draft.

00:41:28He comes back because he wants to win a championship.

00:41:31All of a sudden, now the season's on the ropes.

00:41:33We don't even know if he's a first-rounder anymore.

00:41:36So with that in mind, and look, when you struggle as a college quarterback, it's rough, man.

00:41:41You're going to class.

00:41:42Everybody's looking at you sideways.

00:41:43You've got millions of dollars of investment nowadays in these rosters.

00:41:47And you can be the deciding factor as to whether all that money, all that investment, all that work succeeds

00:41:54or fails.

00:41:56So with that, let's look forward to a pressure-packed Saturday.

00:41:59Here are the five quarterbacks that have the most pressure on this weekend.

00:42:02And we're going to start with Arch Manning at five.

00:42:05And this is almost, this is evergreen, right, guys?

00:42:08I mean, you want to talk about American royalty.

00:42:10This is the closest we got to a true American prince.

00:42:13Look at the lineage.

00:42:15He's under a microscope every week.

00:42:16And he's four and won his last top ten games.

00:42:19He beat Ohio State.

00:42:20And yet, instead of celebrating the fourth against Ohio State, we're asking, is that the exception rather than the rule?

00:42:27Is he consistent enough?

00:42:28Can he get it done?

00:42:29Now he has to go on the road in Knoxville, in front of the president, try to get it done.

00:42:33Massive pressure.

00:42:34Number four, John Mateer, Oklahoma.

00:42:38Last year, Oklahoma shocks everybody.

00:42:40They go 10-2.

00:42:41They make the playoff.

00:42:41Mateer's a huge reason why.

00:42:43He's crowned in the offseason.

00:42:45He's going to be healthy this year.

00:42:45He's going to be great.

00:42:46He loses to Michigan.

00:42:47We hate him.

00:42:48We hate him.

00:42:48Completely, completely done.

00:42:50Right?

00:42:51He's just not good.

00:42:52He's not accurate.

00:42:52He can't win.

00:42:53And now we think Oklahoma has no chance, but they suck.

00:42:56And now he has to go into Athens against Kirby Smart and the undeniable machine that are the Georgia Bulldogs

00:43:03and try to get it done.

00:43:04Uh-uh.

00:43:04Mateer, a lot of pressure.

00:43:06He's dead this week.

00:43:07And number three, Bryce Underwood.

00:43:10Spider-Man, Uncle Ben, what'd he tell him?

00:43:13With great power comes great responsibility.

00:43:15Well, with great money comes great expectation.

00:43:17And that's been Bryce Underwood since day one.

00:43:20And you're looking at a Michigan team.

00:43:21They have an elite defense.

00:43:23They have an ascending difficulty of schedule, which allows them to round into playoff form.

00:43:27They have a great head coach.

00:43:28They seem to have all the elements of a team that could make the playoff if the quarterback is good.

00:43:35And now he's got that Iowa defense coming in, trying to prove him wrong.

00:43:38Everybody's waiting for him to fail after they get gifted Western Michigan when they should not.

00:43:42Can Bryce Underwood start to prove the haters wrong and make Michigan believe again?

00:43:48Or will he, too, be cast into the dump?

00:43:51Number two, we mentioned him earlier, Dante Moore.

00:43:55Nobody has seen their fortunes change more in this early season than has Moore.

00:44:00Entering as a guaranteed top five pick.

00:44:03As I said, now requesting he be his first rounder last year.

00:44:06The big knock on him was, well, he doesn't perform in the big games.

00:44:08Well, he already lost to Oklahoma State.

00:44:10The offense looks completely lost without Will Stein.

00:44:12And it's caused people to question how much of his success was Moore, how much was Stein.

00:44:16Well, now he gets to go to the Coliseum against USC and try to prove that he is right.

00:44:22We are wrong.

00:44:23And we should be celebrating him once again.

00:44:24And then I got you a two-for-one special at one, guys.

00:44:28Sam Levitt and Marcel Reed.

00:44:30Look at, and this kind of reinforces the point.

00:44:32If you look at the SEC standings right now in terms of quarterback rating, right?

00:44:37This is a conference that features Arch Manning, Sam Levitt, Marcel Reed, guys that are paid millions of dollars that

00:44:42we spent hours talking about this offseason.

00:44:44And yet, it's Gunnar Stockton, Kamaru Terrell, and Aaron Filo that sit at the top.

00:44:50Sam Levitt's 14th out of 16.

00:44:53Marcel Reed's dead last.

00:44:55Both of these rosters have a combined $90 million invested.

00:44:59Both believe they are playoff teams and both hopes ride on the shoulders of these two men who are going

00:45:06to do battle Saturday night in Death Valley.

00:45:09So, one of these guys on this, some of these guys are going to write their legend on Saturday.

00:45:14They're going to take that next step towards immortality.

00:45:16Some will fail and will task them to the side and never think about them again.

00:45:21Who will it be?

00:46:21Yeah, I had some choice words for him.

00:46:23I just think they play a soft brand of football.

00:46:25That's just me.

00:46:25They don't.

00:46:26They're me guys, in my opinion.

00:46:28They don't play as a cohesive unit, Bear.

00:46:30It certainly shows, especially.

00:46:33It's weird because you look at some of their defensive metrics in terms of pressure rate and stuff like that.

00:46:39I always said a bad word on TV.

00:46:41I'm sorry.

00:46:43They rank well, but it looks like they're really miscentenement in the secondary.

00:46:49That's a big loss.

00:46:50And then the injuries that they have, a wide receiver, it could be a big deal.

00:46:53But flipping it, though, to SC, that's my feeling.

00:46:58Your opinion on Oregon is how I feel about SC.

00:47:02I am tired of hearing about, this is the year SC can be a playoff team.

00:47:08Lincoln Rally has been building to this in year five.

00:47:10Win the game.

00:47:11Win a game against an Oregon team that we thought was great at the beginning of the year.

00:47:18And clearly they have their issues.

00:47:20We've done this with other players.

00:47:21We did it with Miami going into last year.

00:47:24Show us.

00:47:25And what'd they do?

00:47:25They went out and they beat Notre Dame in the opening game and won a big game.

00:47:29Guys, if USC is as good as we think they are or could be, some think they could be, go

00:47:33out, beat Oregon on your own field as a small underdog.

00:47:37Yeah, I mean, it's crazy, Bear.

00:47:38We talked about Lincoln Rally a few years into that $100 million contract and still does not have a signature

00:47:44win.

00:47:44Like the closest would be LSU maybe in Vegas, but that did not age well at all.

00:47:49This is their opportunity here this Saturday.

00:47:52Who do you like in this one?

00:47:55I think USC is going to get the job done.

00:47:57I really do.

00:47:58There are a lot of people.

00:47:59We talked about this yesterday.

00:48:01I kind of just misconstrued my words.

00:48:03I don't imagine that.

00:48:04People like taking words out of context and not really understanding what you're saying on social media.

00:48:09I just have a lot of concerns about Oregon right now.

00:48:13I think that offensive line, I think those tackles are going to be good.

00:48:16But right now, I don't think they're ready to play at a big level, traveling on the road against a

00:48:22desperate team that's been hearing idiots like me talk about go out and win the game and prove it.

00:48:26I think they do get a win.

00:48:28And wow, Oregon hasn't had two losses at the end of September in a hell of a long time.

00:48:32And to be in a position that if they do lose tomorrow, to have to win out to make the

00:48:37playoff is not something that I would have thought here I'd be sitting here in the last week of September

00:48:42saying.

00:48:43Yeah, so it's an insane weekend, Bear.

00:48:46You know, we've kind of been building to this moment in college football for about a month.

00:48:50And now we get all of these ranked games.

00:48:51Let's head to the one that the president of the United States is actually headed to, Texas, hitting the road

00:48:57to Knoxville.

00:48:58And it's such a unique spot for Texas because, as we pointed out, they've been great against top 10, like

00:49:06getting up for the big games, right?

00:49:07Like, despite all my criticisms of Sark, he's winning those top 10 matchups.

00:49:11But it's these situations, hitting the road against a seemingly lesser opponent that has gotten them into trouble recently.

00:49:19Is this year's Texas different from last year?

00:49:22Can they go on the road to Tennessee and get it done?

00:49:25Well, they sure can.

00:49:26But I would be inclined to take in the Vols and the points here.

00:49:29It looks like Tennessee is kind of a sharpish side.

00:49:33In Vegas, a lot of public, the books are going to need the Vols.

00:49:36I usually like being on the side of the books that they're going to need.

00:49:40The Hollywood Smothers injury is a massive deal.

00:49:44If he can't play, their ability to run the ball and take some of the pressure off of Arch.

00:49:48We haven't seen Arch play a complete full game from start to finish and really look comfortable in his, what,

00:49:56year and a half almost at Texas.

00:49:59It's interesting because the Vols had a long losing streak of these big games at home.

00:50:06Then they finally broke through and they beat Alabama.

00:50:08And then they beat Alabama again.

00:50:12And last year, remember, they had Georgia beat.

00:50:15They had Oklahoma beat.

00:50:16And they kind of gave those games away.

00:50:19I think this is a really good spot potentially for an up-to-date.

00:50:22I think Faison Brandon comes out, has a pretty good game.

00:50:25I think the Vols are alive to win this game.

00:50:28All right, Bear, as you just said, you thought that the books are going to need Tennessee.

00:50:33Let's move on to another game where, to me, the line doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

00:50:38Let's talk about Ole Miss, Florida.

00:50:41Florida's obviously favored by three and a half.

00:50:43I understand it could be a letdown spot after the emotional win over LSU.

00:50:47I know that Swamp is a tough place to play.

00:50:49But what do you make of this line?

00:50:51Do you think it should be three and a half?

00:50:53And where are you leaning?

00:50:55It's the square.

00:50:56Ole Miss is the squarest play on the board this week.

00:50:59Last week, as you guys know, no one wanted to bet Ole Miss last week.

00:51:04Everyone wanted to bet LSU.

00:51:05Nobody wanted Ole Miss.

00:51:07They pulled the small upset.

00:51:08Now this week, she was on the other foot.

00:51:11Nobody wants to bet Florida.

00:51:12Everybody wants to bet Ole Miss.

00:51:14People are asking me in my big group threats, why is Ole Miss an underdog?

00:51:19It's because it's a massive adjustment on Florida.

00:51:22Florida has been adjusted to the positive.

00:51:24I think Ed Sammons is a longtime Vegas odds maker, college football out there.

00:51:29I think he adjusted Florida seven points from his players, which is a massive deal.

00:51:34And baked in the number is the knowledge that people expect Ole Miss to have a letdown after last week.

00:51:42And it makes perfect sense.

00:51:43And I like to mine for data and dig for stats and things like that.

00:51:49And you've got to go back to the last 30.

00:51:51The teams may change, but the types of teams don't change.

00:51:55Over the last 35 years, you've had four instances where you've had a team in the top five that was

00:52:02an underdog against a team outside the top 20.

00:52:05In all four instances, that top five team lost.

00:52:08And in three of the four instances, it wasn't really close.

00:52:12So you've got Baud, his ability to run the ball, potentially help keep Trinidad Chambliss off the field.

00:52:18Florida is the only side in this game that I can play.

00:52:22Let me throw a question back at the room there, certainly for the ex-players.

00:52:27What is a more difficult situation to come back from?

00:52:32What the Ole Miss game last week where you put all of your emotional legs in the basket, you hate

00:52:38Lane Kiffin, you want to win, and you win.

00:52:41And then getting up the following week.

00:52:43Or the debacle by C.J. Bailey and Dave Doran at NC State and giving a game away that you

00:52:49had won.

00:52:49What's the more difficult thing to bounce back from the following week?

00:52:54I didn't lose a lot there, so I'll let Mike handle this one.

00:52:59Wow, nice.

00:53:03Personally, I think it's after winning like a huge game and having that hangover of a lot of guys, the

00:53:12team, you know, they can run into this complacency thing.

00:53:15And I think it all depends on the kind of coach in the week of preparation that leading up into

00:53:20your next game.

00:53:21But there's a lot of players that, especially if you're used to winning, like T-Bob said, you have this.

00:53:30This winning hangover that doesn't leave until Tuesday, Wednesday, depending on what kind of coach you have.

00:53:37So that's kind of a game that scares me more is going through this huge win, this huge celebration at

00:53:43home.

00:53:44All the players probably went out after the game, stuff like that.

00:53:47And then having to lock back in for another huge game on the road.

00:53:51That, to me, is what would probably be tougher.

00:53:53See, I think it's to C.J. Bailey just because that breaks you.

00:53:55You have no confidence that you suck as a team.

00:53:58That makes you that.

00:53:59Like, Bear, I got one more quick follow-up here.

00:54:01I know we've spent too long in this game.

00:54:02But how do the books account for the intangibles of a Chambliss, right?

00:54:08Best gamer in the country.

00:54:09Always elevates his play.

00:54:11He's already got two ranked wins.

00:54:13The schedule doesn't, like, I just can't.

00:54:16I cannot find myself going against Trinidad Chambliss here.

00:54:19And I know why everybody is, but I can't do it.

00:54:22It's hard.

00:54:23You can talk about whatever your definition of Heisman, most outstanding, best, most valuable,

00:54:29and maybe he'll go on and win it.

00:54:31He's now the favorite or co-favorite with Darryl Metz.

00:54:35There isn't a more valuable player in college football than Trinidad Chambliss.

00:54:40That guy is a winner.

00:54:41I mean, I remember being at the Fiesta Bowl last year with however many seconds left in the game,

00:54:46and I'm like, it is too much time.

00:54:48This guy, you get to the 40-yard line with Canero as the kicker, and they can get points.

00:54:53So it is a scary deal.

00:54:56He is valuable.

00:54:57But I think it's more, like, I know in the NFL they kind of begin, like, a quarterback,

00:55:05starting quarterback value.

00:55:06So I don't know if they necessarily do it for quarterbacks.

00:55:10But I certainly, as a handicapper, and you guys as handicappers and former players,

00:55:13you can certainly move something up.

00:55:16I mean, that is the – what you just said is the reason why I can't fully just go contrarian

00:55:23and bet the play that the system and history has pointed out,

00:55:29because I just don't want to bet against that guy.

00:55:31Yeah, and Chambliss is obviously, you know, in the driver's seat as the Heisman favorite here.

00:55:37But is there anyone else you have your eye on in terms of just, like, a betting perspective

00:55:42of somebody you might see as more of a long shot?

00:55:45While I ultimately do think it's going to come down to potentially Mensa

00:55:50and maybe C.J. Carr if Notre Dame continues to win and go undefeated,

00:55:55it probably will be one of the – who knows what Mississippi State's going to do?

00:55:59Yeah.

00:55:59With Taylor.

00:55:59Taylor, like, that he could be a wild card guy.

00:56:01But I hate betting guys that were, like, 100-1 or 150-1, however many weeks ago.

00:56:06And now they're 10-1 before they get into the real meat of their SEC schedule.

00:56:11The one guy I would take a look at, I think you can get a pretty decent price on Gunnar

00:56:16Stockton.

00:56:17You see him right there at 31.

00:56:18The one, like, that's a – the Georgia offense is really good.

00:56:23And if they continue to win and win the SEC and they're sitting there at 12-1

00:56:28and maybe Miami and Notre Dame are at 12-1, maybe Mississippi State picks up some losses.

00:56:33I like the Georgia just because it feels like not enough people are talking about

00:56:37how good Georgia is because that's their expectation of football.

00:56:41And Georgia, I feel like they're just, like, going through the cracks,

00:56:44going – it's this great team.

00:56:45And then all of a sudden we're going to see them in the national championship

00:56:48and everyone's going to realize how great Gunnar Stockton is.

00:56:51That'll be a tricky game, I think, for them tomorrow

00:56:54because you've got an Oklahoma team that is absolutely desperate

00:56:57after dropping a game on the road to Michigan, did not play well last week against New Mexico,

00:57:02really were dominated up front.

00:57:04But I think that defense is going to travel and play well, and this will be by far.

00:57:08But we think Georgia's great.

00:57:10We think that they can go on and maybe be one of the best teams – two teams in the

00:57:14country,

00:57:14if not the best – but Dave, you talk about, like, Miami's schedule

00:57:17and other teams' schedule out there.

00:57:19Like, Georgia's played nobody so far.

00:57:23They're the worst team in the SEC in Arkansas, an FCS team in Western Kentucky.

00:57:27Like, this is going to be a massive step up in competition for the Bulldogs on Saturdays.

00:57:31So 14's a little rich there.

00:57:33You could interest me in taking that Oklahoma defense on the road plus the full 14.

00:57:39Yeah, it kind of bears a lot of similarity to the Oklahoma-Michigan game only inverted, right?

00:57:45Where the shoe's on the other foot, where you're like, well, paint me the picture.

00:57:49How in the world can Michigan get it done?

00:57:50They've looked so bad.

00:57:51Like, that's kind of how I feel about Oklahoma.

00:57:53So, yeah, 14's a big, big number there, Bear.

00:57:56Go ahead, Mikey.

00:57:58Bear, staying in the Big Ten, UCLA's going on the road to Maryland,

00:58:02and they're favored by one and a half.

00:58:05You have UCLA, who's kind of proven and established through three weeks,

00:58:10and then a Maryland team who just really has it.

00:58:13On the edge of firing their coach.

00:58:14Right.

00:58:14Is this a fishy line to you, and what do you think?

00:58:18Yeah, Maryland really let me down last week.

00:58:21I was a believer in Malik Washington.

00:58:22I thought they would play Virginia Tech tough and maybe win that game,

00:58:26but final score wasn't indicative of how that game went.

00:58:30Remember, though, this is an early kick, so it's going to be, what, 1030,

00:58:35West Coast time for UCLA, going on the road, desperate team.

00:58:41I know Jeff Schwartz on Bear Bets, he liked Maryland in this spot.

00:58:46It would be Maryland or pass for me just because of what you said.

00:58:49Like, Maryland's another team that every single year it seems like they're

00:58:53starting off 2-0, 3-0, and then they get into the conference slate,

00:58:57and they completely go downhill after that.

00:59:00And I like Lox.

00:59:01Lox is a really good offensive mind.

00:59:03But at some point, you've got to get to eight, nine wins there

00:59:06and show that you're in the corner.

00:59:08He was close to being let go a year ago.

00:59:10If they lose this game, if Bob Chesney comes in there and wins that game

00:59:15and the Bruins go to 4-0, you're right, that could spell curtains on the Lox there.

00:59:20But I'll give them a chance tomorrow.

00:59:21Real quick here, Bear, and then we'll get into Poke the Bear,

00:59:24where we all pick the same game, we mentioned the quarterbacks

00:59:29under the most pressure this weekend.

00:59:30Two guys I didn't mention because I don't think they're under pressure.

00:59:32I think they're ascending, and this is a great battle for one

00:59:36to take a step ahead of the other is Austin Simmons versus Kamario Taylor,

00:59:39a ranked-the-ranked matchup with Mizzou heading to Starkville

00:59:42to take on Mississippi State, probably the biggest game in Starkville

00:59:45in, I don't know, a decade or more.

00:59:48Who do you believe is going to come out on top in this one?

00:59:50Probably that Auburn game in 2014, the first year of the college football playoff.

00:59:56I was there for that game, and they won, and it was an awesome scene,

00:59:58and they debuted as if the first number one in the college football playoff rankings.

01:00:03But, yeah, I thought last week was a spot that was very dangerous

01:00:06for Mississippi State, and South Carolina certainly started well,

01:00:10left a lot of points on the field with some short field goals,

01:00:12and ultimately in the second half they couldn't get a stop.

01:00:15I think Austin Simmons, and he's going to probably have this game circled a little bit

01:00:20against Mississippi State, but being an Ole Miss guy in the past.

01:00:24But State right now is very, very hard to find.

01:00:27I don't know if I want to lay six-and-a-half here.

01:00:30Again, that bandwagon getting really full, but what have they shown offensively

01:00:35that someone out there is going to be able to stop them?

01:00:37Like Eli Drickowitz at Missouri, they do not typically pull very many upsets.

01:00:44But my inclination here would be Mississippi State will win a high-scoring game,

01:00:49but I don't know if I want to lay six-and-a-half.

01:03:41what has quickly became my favorite part of Friday.

01:03:44We get to talk to a man that will forget multiple times over more football

01:03:49than we will ever know, and that's Hall of Famer Joe Thomas.

01:03:52Joe, what's up, babe?

01:03:54Last night on Thursday Night Football, the Falcons dominating the Packers,

01:03:59and it looks to me like a lot of the Packers' struggles can be pointed

01:04:04at that offensive line.

01:04:05They can't stay on schedule.

01:04:06They got outrest 242-17 last night, Joe.

01:04:10What did you see out of the Packers up front?

01:04:12Well, they've got a lot of offensive line problems because they've had a lot

01:04:15of injuries right now.

01:04:17Three different left guards in three weeks.

01:04:19That's not a formula for success, and when you got a rookie making his first

01:04:23start on prime time, they were giving up all sorts of pressures up the middle,

01:04:27and you could see that there was significant communication problems because they had

01:04:31a lot of guys that were running free right at your quarterback.

01:04:33I don't know about you guys, but if I'm a quarterback and I got free runners rushing

01:04:37right at my face trying to take my head off, I'm going to struggle a little bit throwing

01:04:40the football down the field and completing passes to my receivers.

01:04:44Joe, what about this?

01:04:46You're someone who, unfortunately, you played with at least 20 different quarterbacks in

01:04:52your career.

01:04:52It's unreal, right?

01:04:53You look around the NFL right now, Commander's going to be working in Mariota.

01:04:57The Bears, I think, have settled on Case Keenum for this weekend.

01:05:01When you have a new quarterback entering the mix, what does that week of preparation look

01:05:05like?

01:05:06How do you get ready to put your best foot forward?

01:05:09Well, the very first thing that I'm trying to do as an offensive lineman is get comfortable

01:05:13with the cadence because the rhythm of every quarterback's cadence is a little bit different,

01:05:16and the most important thing for an offensive lineman that gets overlooked is being able

01:05:21to get off the ball on the snap.

01:05:23I need to be able to move before the defensive line does because that's the only advantage

01:05:27that I have over those guys.

01:05:28Remember, we talked before.

01:05:29Those guys are bigger, stronger, more athletic, better-looking girlfriends, and they have all

01:05:34the advantage.

01:05:35Only thing that I have is I know what the cadence is, so I need to start moving as that

01:05:40quarterback

01:05:40is rolling into the hut.

01:05:41So when the tip of that football is moving, I'm moving, and I can get a little bit of an

01:05:45advantage

01:05:46like that, that's the most important thing when you first start out because every quarterback

01:05:50has that different rhythm, but then it's a communication thing, right?

01:05:53I need to be able to see the game through his eyes so that we can help him so my

01:05:57center

01:05:58can move the protection if he needs to, and to be able to get a hat on a hat, that's

01:06:02the

01:06:02biggest thing, and you can tell across the league when you have those problems at quarterback,

01:06:07you've got to replace that guy.

01:06:09It immediately becomes a communication issue, so using that week of practice to get on the

01:06:14same page as quick as possible is the most critical thing.

01:06:18Joe, earlier in the show we were talking about Brian Flores and his defense and his various

01:06:23blitz packages that he brings.

01:06:26I know in college, like with Bob Bostad, who was a Badger, coached for the Badgers for a

01:06:32while, Thursday, or I guess, yeah, so for a Saturday game, Thursday after practice we would

01:06:39do blitz pickup for about an hour, every single blitz against, runs, passes, five-man protection,

01:06:44six-man protection.

01:06:45What's it like in the NFL?

01:06:46Is it similar?

01:06:48Maybe it's a Friday for you guys going through every single blitz against every single look

01:06:53that you guys have.

01:06:55Yeah, so typically Thursday is your big third down day, right?

01:06:58On Thursday you're installing red zone, you're installing all the third down protections,

01:07:02but let's be honest, when you're going against the Brian Flores defense, you're spending probably

01:07:06twice as much time going over the blitzes because his blitz package is so huge, and it's so important

01:07:11to be able to identify where those guys are coming from.

01:07:14In every one of the blitzes that he has, there's little tells, right?

01:07:16He does a great job of disguising it, but the challenge of going against Brian Flores'

01:07:21defense is he's going to put seven or eight guys on the line of scrimmage, and he plays

01:07:25with a lot of those tweener-type guys, right?

01:07:27They're not big, heavy, physical, tough, strong guys that have their hand down so it's easy

01:07:31to identify who the rushers are.

01:07:33He's going to line up a bunch of linebackers, outside linebacker body types, and then you

01:07:37don't really know who's going to blitz.

01:07:39And the challenge with that is if you're not able to identify those little differences

01:07:43as far as alignment with which blitz is coming, then what he does a great job of Flores on

01:07:49defense is finding a good rusher, like linebacker type, and getting him matched up against

01:07:54the back.

01:07:55That's really where the struggle is.

01:07:56They want to be able to find on defense a way to get two defensive linemen being blocked

01:08:01and assign the three offensive linemen, and then to find one of their better rushers who's

01:08:06an outside linebacker at the line of scrimmage, rushing, and getting to be tried to be blocked

01:08:11by a running back or a tight end.

01:08:13That's the matchup that he tries to find, and even if you have a hat on a hat in that

01:08:16situation, your running back is going to get run over more times than not when they have

01:08:20to go one-on-one against a big linebacker.

01:08:22Joe, we saw the Rams kind of come back to what we usually see them on offense, even

01:08:29without Puka Nakua the other night.

01:08:31And this week, they go against a great defense in the Broncos.

01:08:34So what are you looking out for in that matchup, just a high-powered offense going against

01:08:39a great defense like the Broncos?

01:08:41Yeah, it's going to come down to pressure.

01:08:43And we saw that last night with the Packers.

01:08:45We mentioned the offensive line problems that they have.

01:08:47But really, one of the things that the Rams did great last week is their offensive line

01:08:52is blocking.

01:08:53I think they've only given up one sack so far in the year.

01:08:55We know Denver can get after the quarterback.

01:08:57They had 68 sacks last season, but only four so far.

01:09:01So they're trying to get back on track with their defense to back what they used to be

01:09:05as far as getting after the quarterback.

01:09:06And that is the best way to slow down an offense is hit the quarterback early, hit them often,

01:09:11and give them problems as far as getting into the rhythm of their passing game.

01:09:15That's going to be the key for that Broncos defense.

01:09:17Joe, where do you fall on the internal debate that sacks are a quarterback stat?

01:09:23As somebody who played so long in the NFL, passed so many great rushers, how – because

01:09:29it does feel like at times an elite quarterback can make up for all the offensive line teams.

01:09:33How responsible is a quarterback for the pressure that he faces and the sacks that he takes?

01:09:39Well, I don't know if you guys know, but I never gave up any sacks that were actually

01:09:42my fault in the NFL.

01:09:43It was always the quarterback's fault.

01:09:45The ball too long, dude.

01:09:45Yeah, sometimes it was the center's fault, you know, the left guard.

01:09:48But in general, like your quarterback is your ultimate eraser.

01:09:52He's the guy back there, and we remember watching Tom Brady and Peyton Manning and those guys

01:09:55that got rid of the football quickly.

01:09:57That makes your job as an offensive lineman so easy because I know as long as I don't get

01:10:01beat quickly to the inside or run over, like the ball is going to get out of the hands

01:10:05of the quarterback quickly.

01:10:06So I can set differently, I can be more aggressive because I know if I lose, as long as I

01:10:11lose

01:10:11and the guy has to rush to the outside, it's going to take him too long to go outside of

01:10:15his rush lane, get back in phase, and then get to that spot where the quarterback's launching

01:10:20the football when the quarterback's getting rid of it in a second and a half.

01:10:23So you always have that quarterback that can overcome things for you as an offensive lineman.

01:10:28But if he hangs on to the football, like you still need to be able to block for the normal

01:10:32progression within the passing game, and a lot of these teams that were watching, especially

01:10:36last night with the Packers, like they weren't even giving Jordan Love a chance to get started

01:10:40because that pressure was coming up the middle.

01:10:42And that's like the one thing, if you remember back to Brady when he was with the Patriots,

01:10:46like the only way you could beat him, the times that they lost in the Super Bowl or in

01:10:49the playoffs, it was because the pressure came right up the middle and quarterback doesn't

01:10:53even have a chance to set his feet once he gets the football and deliver it.

01:10:56Yeah, on that note, with Caleb Williams being out, he's a guy who, he is that

01:11:01eraser. He scrambles, he extends plays. And when you transition to a guy like Case Keenum,

01:11:07who's going to be more of a pocket guy, how different is your job and how different is the

01:11:11game plan going to be when you don't have that magic man back there to get you out of trouble

01:11:16as an offensive lineman?

01:11:18It's going to be a lot different. And we talked about like the first two things that I would do

01:11:21when I have a new quarterback and I'm getting ready for a new starter, right? We talked about

01:11:25cadence. We talked about communication and the blitz pickup. But, you know, that's the third thing is

01:11:30where is this guy going to be? Because every quarterback has a different drop, even though

01:11:34they might have under center, five-step drop. In the playbook, he's supposed to be at eight

01:11:38yards. You have taller quarterbacks, you have shorter quarterbacks. And actually, a lot of times

01:11:43the taller quarterbacks, you would think maybe that their drop is deeper because they have longer

01:11:47strides. But those guys actually don't drop quite as deep because they can see over the line a little

01:11:52bit easier without having to get so much depth. And they are actually big helps for the tackle

01:11:56because my biggest fear as a tackle always was that quarterback that dropped to 10 yards

01:12:01because now I got to worry about that rusher going all the way around me. And then he has time

01:12:06to be

01:12:07able to loop back around and run the hoop to get to that spot at 10 yards to hit the

01:12:11quarterback.

01:12:12But if I got a tall quarterback who feels comfortable sitting in the pocket and delivering it over the

01:12:16top of my offensive lineman, like that's a great world because now I can just think about don't get

01:12:22beat inside, stay heavy so I don't get run over and push my guy wide and I can always push

01:12:27him

01:12:27past the quarterback. So figuring out how that quarterback feels and sits in the pocket and

01:12:32knowing where is that spot? Because I don't have the eyes in the back of my head. I don't know

01:12:35where

01:12:36he's going to set up. I need to grow comfort level with that guy during practice to be able to

01:12:41have

01:12:41that good feel of where he's going to be. And when you don't have a Caleb Williams who makes you

01:12:45right,

01:12:45you better be damn right that you know exactly where that quarterback is and where you need to keep

01:12:49your guy away from. So Joe, we've asked you a lot of analysis. I want to get back to analysis

01:12:53in a

01:12:54second. But right now, I want to speak to your balls and your heart. Because last night, I mean,

01:13:01what the Falcons did up front, 242 on the ground, Bichon slicing through the defense, just played some

01:13:08Florida highlights. Is that the best feeling in the world as an offensive lineman? When you know,

01:13:14because that's what the Bears are going to have to do too, like when you know you can just run

01:13:16it down

01:13:17their throats and you've essentially broken the other team's will?

01:13:21There's no better feeling as an offensive lineman. You guys know what that's like. It's like you're

01:13:25walking to the line of scrimmage. You got that Vince McMahon strut. You're going up there and it's

01:13:31like, hey boys, we're running it right here and you can't do anything about it, right? It's that

01:13:35feeling of total domination and just imposing your will on an opponent who can't wait to get on the

01:13:41bus and fly home. And that is like the best feeling as an offensive lineman. One, there's no stress.

01:13:46I don't have to worry about a sack. I don't have to worry about giving up a huge hit on

01:13:50my quarterback

01:13:50and having him carry it off the field on a stretcher anymore. I'm imposing my damage on

01:13:55that defense every play. And that's how you get that feeling as an offensive lineman of winning

01:13:59together. Because let's be honest, it's not a lot of fun being a lineman, right? We don't get to do

01:14:04a

01:14:04lot of awesome stuff. We don't get to score touchdowns. But that time when you walk off that

01:14:08field and you know that you just imposed your will and dominated your opponent and you ran the

01:14:12football at will, like that's why we play the game as offensive linemen. I thought that was a really

01:14:17cool moment too when Bijan, you know, after the game was over pretty much just went up and hugged

01:14:22all of his offensive linemen. That's why we do it. That's love, baby. When we go to the locker room

01:14:27all the little skinny guys are like, y'all killed it today. It's like, you noticed that?

01:14:33Like, fuck. You know my name? Yeah. You'll do it. All right, Joe, earlier we asked a question I'm

01:14:39going to throw to you. We looked at a grouping of teams and kind of asked, are they real or

01:14:43not?

01:14:43We're talking about Raiders, Vikings, Bengals, Eagles, Lions, Panthers. It's a big group. It's a lot

01:14:51to keep in your head. But out of the names I just mentioned, is there one that jumps out to

01:14:56you?

01:14:56They're like, no, no, I really believe in this team. Oh, that's a good question. Um, you know,

01:15:01I like the Bengals, right? And I'm not sure I like fully believe in them yet, but I've just always

01:15:06been a huge Joe Burrow fan. And I just think he is one of those great quarterbacks that we'll look

01:15:12back on. And the way that he has these communications non-verbally with his receivers at the line of

01:15:18scrimmage, and he finds the best route combinations for those coverages to be able to deliver the

01:15:24football. And he's got such great weapons out there, right? When they're humming on offense,

01:15:27there's no defense that can stop him because he gets rid of the football on time. He throws such

01:15:32a beautiful, accurate pass. And he's got these massive receivers out there that when they catch

01:15:36the football, they do amazing things and they can dominate a defensive secondary in the way that

01:15:41an offensive lineman loves to be able to dominate and impose their will on a front seven on defense.

01:15:47So I think the Bengals are one of those teams that I mean, they're in our division as a Browns

01:15:51fan,

01:15:52so I don't love to say it, but Joe Burrow, I think he is just one of those elite quarterbacks,

01:15:56those difference makers in the league. And those are the guys you always want to co-sign with

01:16:01and trust them, especially once you get towards the end of the season, because those are the guys

01:16:05that deliver those long playoff runs for you. Joe, you're on the farm today. You see Hall of Fame

01:16:10farms in the background, Hall of Fame beef. It's an incredible product. Excite me about some meat

01:16:15meat right now. Not that it takes much. What do we got going on this weekend? What are you working

01:16:55in the front of the animal. And it's got this amazing beefiness, this mouthwatering mouthfeel

01:17:01with the Wagyu. And it's got a ton of like spiderweb marbling in it. And it's got like the ultimate

01:17:06blend between soft and delicate and beefy with just a little bit of bite to it. It was like one

01:17:12best steaks I've ever had in my entire life. And I'll send you guys some thirst trap pictures

01:17:18later on because it turned out absolutely unbelievable. And I'm still full, but I'm

01:17:22about to go back for some steak and eggs this morning after.
