00:00Did you know a shop will charge $100 to $150 to restore one pair of yellow headlights,
00:05and the really gone ones jump past $200? A dozen breakfast eggs leave you enough
00:10calcium carbonate to polish both lamps. That powder is free. A ceramic wipe kit at Walmart
00:15is about $17. A new assembly on some cars is a dealer number that makes you sit down.
00:21Tonight, I'm going to show you how to roast eggshells into a polishing flower.
00:24Cut the yellow haze off the plastic and lock a UV coat so the clear look does not die in
00:29three months. I have done this on a daily driver that looked like two dirty mason jars after sunset.
00:35I'm not writing a $150 check for a driveway job I can finish before the coffee cools.
00:40The coat that keeps it from yellowing again is later. First, you should know what you're
00:44actually rubbing off because the internet keeps selling you toothpaste and then acting shocked
00:48when October looks like April. Your headlights are not glass. They are polycarbonate with a thin
00:52factory hard coat that was supposed to block the sun. UV eats that coat. Then the plastic itself
00:58oxidizes, turns yellow, and starts scattering the beam so you think the bulbs died. Dealers sell
01:03assemblies. Detail shops sell the $150 wet sand. Walmart sells a Cerakote wipe kit for about $17.
01:10Toothpaste is the kitchen version and it is the same mineral family as what is sitting in your compost
01:14bowl. Eggshells are about 95% calcium carbonate. That is the grit in a lot of toothpastes. On a headlight,
01:21it is a very mild sandpaper. It can knock the top oxidized layer off so the lens looks wet and
01:27darker.
01:27It cannot put the factory coat back. That is why the toothpaste clips look amazing on day one and
01:32tired by the next oil change. We are using the shells as the cheap abrasive. Then we do the step
01:37the silent eggshell video skipped. Here's the recipe. The powder costs nothing if you already eat eggs.
01:43Save six to twelve shells. Rinse them. Peel the inner membrane if it is hanging there.
01:48That film turns into rubbery specks in the mill. Drop the shells in a dry pan on low heat until
01:53they
01:54feel like thin china and they smell like nothing. Ten minutes is plenty. You are driving water out,
01:59so they shatter instead of smearing. Cool them. Smash in a bag. Then grind in a cheap coffee mill
02:05or a mortar until it is flour, not beach sand. Rub a pinch between wet fingers. If it feels like
02:10salt,
02:11grind again and shake it through a tea strainer. Coarse shell will scratch the lens into a fog you cannot
02:15polish out in one afternoon. Wash the lamps with soap first. You do not want driveway grit riding
02:20along as extra sandpaper. Tape the paint. Blue painters tape around the whole lamp. Paper on the
02:25bumper if you are messy. You are about to make white mud. Light yellowing. The dirty film look,
02:30not craters, can start with the powder. Mix a teaspoon of eggshell flour with a squirt of water
02:35into a paste. A pea of petroleum jelly keeps it on a foam pad. That jelly is a carrier. It
02:40is not a restorer.
02:41Work small circles by hand for a few minutes. Keep it wet. Wipe. Look. If the yellow is only a
02:47film,
02:47you will see a darker, wetter lens underneath. Rinse. Wipe dry. That is the free cousin of toothpaste,
02:53and it is already better than driving like that tonight. If the lamp is the color of old mustard,
02:58skip the polite paste. That oxidation is deeper than breakfast grit. Wetsand. 800 grit wrapped around a
03:04sponge. Water in a spray bottle. Straight passes. Not circles. Until the whole lens is an even dull haze.
03:11Then 1000. Then 2000. You are not making it pretty in the sanding step. You are making it uniformly
03:18cloudy so the polish can cut an even layer. Rinse between grits. Jump from 800 to a t-shirt.
03:23And you leave scratches that halo at night. Now the polish pass. Eggshell flour again. Or cheap plastic
03:29polish if you already own a bottle. Foam pad on a drill. Slow. Think, I could hold this against my
03:35palm,
03:35not strip a screw. Heat. Smears plastic. Two or three light passes. Wipe with a clean microfiber.
03:42Hold a phone flashlight at an angle. Or just look at the garage door. You should see the reflector's
03:46edge again. Not milk. Proof. Because you should not guess. Wipe one half of the lamp with a dry paper
03:51towel before you start and leave a fingerprint of yellow on the towel. After the polish, wipe the same
03:57spot. The towel should come back almost clean. If it still paints yellow, you're still in the oxidized
04:02layer. Sand one grit longer. Then polish again. Do not coat a dirty lens in hope. If this already
04:09has your driveway in your head, subscribe. It is free. Members get the longer tests I keep off the
04:14main upload. I put the shop price range, the Walmart kit, and the UV warning in the description.
04:20The coat that stops a three month relapse. The don'ts that scratch a lamp for good.
04:24And the night beam check are next. Do not drive it like this. You just stripped whatever was left of
04:29the factory coat. Bare polycarbonate starts yellowing in the sun almost immediately. That is the honest
04:35part the eggshell clips skip. A ceramic headlight wipe kit. Caracote's 8 wipe kit is the one sitting at
04:40Walmart around $17 is the lazy seal if you did not want to invent a powder. If you already sanded
04:46with
04:46shells, you still need a UV wipe or a headlight specific clear on top. Rust oleum wipe. New is the
04:53other common wipe. Read the bottle. If it says headlight, it belongs on plastic. If it is generic
04:58spray paint clear, test a corner. Some of those yellow on their own. Apply the coat in the shade.
05:03Lens clean, bone dry, no wax, no leftover paste. Alcohol wipe if you have it. Thin, even, no drips into
05:10the
05:10housing seam. Two light coats beat one gloopy one. Cure time is on the bottle. Do not just take it
05:17around the block in the rain. Park it until it says you can. A few don'ts that save a Saturday.
05:23Do not dry sand. Do not let a high speed wool pad sit in one spot. Do not use metal
05:29polish made for
05:29chrome as your only step on a deeply pitted lamp. Do not coat over toothpaste slime. Rinse until the water
05:35sheets, then coat. Do not wet sand so hard you hit the inside of a thin, aftermarket lens. If you
05:41see
05:41a distortion wave, stop. Tailights and fog lights are the same plastic on a lot of cars. Same tape,
05:48same flower, same coat. If a lamp is cracked or the fog is on the inside, this is the wrong
05:53job.
05:54Moisture inside means a seal failed. Polish will not drain a housing. Bought powder extra if you do not
05:59want a mill breakfast. Kerium oxide is the jeweler's version of a fine polish. Sold for glass and
06:05sometimes used on plastic. Eggshell flour is the free, slightly toothier cousin. Use what you have.
06:11The UV coat is still the part that decides whether you do this again in 90 days. How you know
06:16it worked
06:17in daylight. You can see the reflector instead of a yellow shower door. At night, walk 20 feet in front
06:22with low beams on a wall or a garage door. The cutoff should look like a cutoff, not a dirty
06:27fog machine.
06:28If one side is still a blob, you undersanded that one. Dull haze it again. Polish, then coat. Never coat
06:34a
06:34still yellow lamp. Money, because the title should match the driveway. Shop or store. 100 to 150 a
06:41pair on a normal ticket. 200 if they are gone. Cerakote wipe kit, about 17. Eggshell flour,
06:47zero once you eat eggs. A sandpaper pack, a few dollars. Call the powder and paper kit,
06:53four bucks if you want a number and put the $17 wipe on top so it lasts. A new assembly
06:58can be a cheap
06:59aftermarket shell or a dealer part. Polish, first. Do this when the lamps look yellow in daylight,
07:05when oncoming drivers flash you because they think you have highs on, or when a night drive
07:10feels like you need glasses you do not wear. UV does not take a season off. If this turns two
07:16mason
07:17jars back into headlights, send it to whoever just booked a $150 detail for a job that started in a
07:22frying pan. Take care, and I will see you in the next one.
