Local villagers secretly vie for the suddenly vacant leadership; a prominent family plots to control the temple's alms distribution to prevent their rival, Mr. Satharasinghe, from gaining power.
Mr. Satharasinghe travels to the temple, hoping to appoint a new abbot of his choosing as soon as possible. Ananda firmly objects, insisting that succession is strictly determined by church law and tradition, not personal gain.
