00:12Yes, I'm here in Springfield, Massachusetts, where about a dozen protesters have gathered
00:18along Memorial Avenue here outside of the Big E, one of New England's largest agricultural
00:23fairs, which draws thousands of visitors each day.
00:27This demonstration is part of a statewide mobilization against the U.S. war with Iran.
00:32A protester here, a Vietnam Navy veteran, told me that this war is deeply unpopular with the
00:38U.S. public.
00:39The storm hitting New England this weekend has reshaped today's actions.
00:43A protest in Boston was pushed next weekend, while another planned outside of the Ed Sheeran
00:48concert at Gillette Stadium was called off after the Nor'easter gave Sheeran an excuse to cancel.
00:54But this Western mass action went ahead.
00:57Nearly seven months into the war, several or actually none of Washington's stated objectives
01:04are filled.
01:06U.S. forces have damaged Iranian military capabilities, but the conflict has expanded across the region,
01:12and Iran has demonstrated ability to disrupt one of the world's most important shipping
01:17routes.
01:17Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains a fraction of its pre-war level, and
01:22Iranian strikes have damaged or destroyed hundreds of structures and equipment at U.S. bases
01:28across the Middle East.
01:29The U.S. budget office puts the direct U.S. military costs at $38 billion through August 1st,
01:37rising by roughly $3 billion a month.
01:39And U.S. citizens are also paying at the pump.
01:42Gasoline now averages about $4.49 a gallon nationally, more than a dollar above what it was last September.
01:51So for protesters here, these mounting costs are just one part of the mounting argument
01:57against a war with no end in sight.
