00:00The phoenix symbolizes redemption.
00:02It's what you're here for.
00:04It's what connects everyone in this room.
00:07To burn up who you were, to become who you were meant to be.
00:11Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at the best superhero video game of every year,
00:18from 1996 to 2026.
00:21Nice!
00:24Pepperoni!
00:26But before we dive in, we publish new content all week long,
00:29so be sure to subscribe and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:35X-Men vs. Street Fighter
00:37In the early days of crossover gaming, X-Men vs. Street Fighter was a big deal.
00:47The game was an evolution of Capcom's previous works with the Marvel license.
00:52It pitted the company's mightiest mutants against the Street Fighter roster,
00:56which was obviously fantastic to see.
00:58But what made it special wasn't just the novelty.
01:01The tag team mechanic fundamentally changed the franchise going forward,
01:06letting you swap between Wolverine and Ryu mid-combo felt genuinely groundbreaking.
01:11It was so fun and fast, with the novelty of these franchises clashing, making it an arcade hit.
01:21Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter
01:24Building on the chaos of its predecessor, Capcom went even deeper into the Marvel roster and refined every system that
01:31made the original click.
01:39Characters like Spider-Man, Hulk, and Captain America, as well as a few deep cuts, joined the fray.
01:45And the assist mechanic introduced a layer of strategy that competitive players immediately began to exploit.
01:51The game's bright and kinetic visual style captured the energy of a Marvel comic, paired with Capcom's expertise in fighting
01:59mechanics.
02:00Although most of the X-Men were sadly replaced, it set the stage for what was to come.
02:11Marvel vs. Capcom Clash of Super Heroes
02:14We promise we'll get to something else soon, but this truly was the best superhero game of 1998.
02:21Two universes, one incredible clash.
02:29The first true Marvel vs. Capcom title expanded on both sides of historic rosters.
02:35For Capcom, characters like Mega Man, Strider, Morrigan.
02:39For Marvel, exciting new inclusions like War Machine, Venom, and Gambit.
02:43Again, beyond novelty, it was as fast and fierce as its predecessors, with some tweaks to the team-up system,
02:49and featured a host of assist characters.
02:52The game became the foundation of one of fighting game's most beloved franchises,
02:56and its legacy echoes in tournament play to this very day.
03:06Shadow Man
03:07Not every superhero wears a cape.
03:10Based on the Valiant comic of the same name, Acclaim's Dark Horse from 1999 put players in the role of
03:16Michael LeRoy,
03:17a voodoo warrior who straddles the living world, and a terrifying dimension called Deadside.
03:23Kindly refer to me as Shadow Man.
03:25Michael LeRoy has no place here in Deadside.
03:28With a tense atmosphere that paired perfectly with the concept of traveling into the land of the dead,
03:33it was unlike anything else on the market at the time.
03:35And, particularly on PC and the N64, the game looked fantastic.
03:41It was bold and strange, and plus, there wasn't really any competition for Marvel and DC that year.
03:48Which is all the more reason for me to be pushing on.
03:51Open the gates, Jaudy.
03:52Blazes to go, pay for the sea, eh, Michael?
03:55Marvel vs. Capcom 2, New Age of Heroes
03:58The final time, we'll talk about Marvel and Capcom's crossover extravaganza, but really, how could we not?
04:12Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a phenomenal fighting game.
04:15One whose glory is still sung across fighting game communities everywhere.
04:20An astounding 56 playable characters across both legendary histories.
04:25From iconic characters like Magneto and Jill Valentine,
04:29to those no one expected to see, like Spiral and Servbot.
04:33And it, to this day, controls like a dream.
04:36The 3-on-3 format is so finely tuned,
04:40and this is the pinnacle of the franchise's lightning-fast battles.
04:50Few games arrive with the cultural impact of a thunderclap,
04:53nor do they have the power to remain in the conversation for as long as this one.
04:58Spider-Man 2. Enter Electro.
05:01While we sadly couldn't honor the Neversoft Spider-Man for last year,
05:05we can at least talk about its...not-quite-as-good sequel.
05:15Ah! Soooon!
05:21While not as fondly remembered,
05:23Vicarious Vision still delivered more web-slinging action,
05:26and a brand new villain backed up by others
05:29that leaned confidently into classic Spidey comic lore.
05:32Swinging and fighting as Spidey was as fun as ever,
05:35and the team still delivered on boss fights.
05:38It wasn't the most technically ambitious game of its year,
05:40and its short length stopped it from reaching the heights
05:43of either its predecessor and what would come the following year.
05:48Let's see...what was it that thug said?
05:50Hangar 18, right?
05:51There's a Hangar 18 at the airfield!
05:53I don't need pointy ears and a cape to figure out that this is probably another heist.
05:57Spider-Man.
05:58The first movie in Sam Raimi's trilogy was a cultural phenomenon.
06:02Thankfully, its tie-in game wasn't a rushed cash grab
06:05like many that came before and after it.
06:13Sorry, no autographs.
06:15Treyarch delivered something genuinely great,
06:18blending story elements from the movie
06:20as well as new plotlines featuring other characters.
06:23The web-swinging was fluid and exhilarating,
06:25better than what had come before thanks to new hardware.
06:28It captured the physical joy of being Spider-Man,
06:31careening through NYC.
06:32It often gets outshined by its sequel,
06:34but this was a very strong foundation.
06:38Oh, Harry.
06:46Beautiful Joe.
06:48We'll take a break from the licensed games
06:50to focus on something purely original
06:52and truly unlike anything else we'll probably talk about.
07:01You want some?
07:04We'll come and get it.
07:05With his girlfriend kidnapped into a movie world,
07:08Joe enters after where he gains a spiffy new look
07:11and a variety of movie-centric powers.
07:14Moving in slow-mo,
07:15zooming in to pull off a cool pose,
07:17all while pummeling legions of foes into the dirt.
07:20Still, doing so requires precision through fine-tuned practice
07:24and comes with satisfying results.
07:26Not only is the game exceptionally creative,
07:28it's a love letter to both American comic books
07:31and Japanese tokusatsu heroes.
07:34It's a beautifully wacky mix of both,
07:36in particular thanks to its cel-shaded art style.
07:39I've been watching you all along from here.
07:41You were so busy showing off,
07:43you hardly even thought about me.
07:45Hey, that's not true.
07:48Spider-Man 2.
07:49Following up their strong work on the original movie's tie-in,
07:52Treyarch returned for the sequel.
07:54And, just like the movie,
07:55it's a solid improvement.
07:57Are you sleeping all right, Pete?
07:58You look beat.
07:59Just some late nights.
08:01Still piling around with that murdering bug?
08:03The physics-based web swinging was genuinely innovative.
08:07The moment you first let go of a building,
08:09it made everything before feel dated.
08:12Which is why it was praised for years afterwards,
08:14as more and more Spider-Man games continued to release.
08:18The film adaptation content was almost secondary.
08:21The city itself was the game.
08:24Just existing in that world felt authentically heroic
08:26in a way that no superhero game had quite achieved before.
08:30Isn't it beautiful, Rosie?
08:32This will be my gift to the world.
08:34It raised the bar for superhero gaming
08:36that, some might argue, wasn't topped for quite a while.
08:41The Incredible Hulk.
08:42Ultimate Destruction.
08:43There's nothing like some good old-fashioned mayhem.
08:54For Ultimate Destruction, the developers at Radical Entertainment
08:58took the hero's catchphrase, Hulk Smash, quite literally.
09:02The game handed players the keys to an open world
09:04and essentially said,
09:05wreck absolutely everything.
09:07Tear cars apart to use as makeshift fists,
09:10sprint up skyscrapers,
09:12and launch yourself across entire city blocks
09:14within a single bound.
09:15While not all mission types were designed equally,
09:18there had never been a Hulk game
09:20that let you wreak havoc to such a degree,
09:22nor has there been since.
09:24Jacket, he's right on top of you.
09:26Get the hell out of there.
09:28Control, he's made it through the perimeter.
09:31We lost him.
09:32He's gone.
09:33Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
09:35Building off of its work on the X-Men Legends games,
09:38Raven Software delivered what would be
09:40one of their finest titles.
09:41With a completely original plot,
09:43it featured a roster that pulled from multiple corners
09:45of the Marvel Universe,
09:47teaming up to defeat Doctor Doom.
10:00The globe's spanning story sent you everywhere
10:03from Asgard to the Skrull homeworld.
10:05It was pure comic book fan service,
10:08yet executed with genuine craft.
10:10It was a simple yet satisfying action RPG blend
10:13with the vast roster of heroes and villains
10:15offering different ways to fight.
10:17The ability to mix and match your dream team
10:19on top of co-op
10:21gave it enormous replay value.
10:27I need more energy to do that.
10:31The Darkness.
10:33We're stretching the hero part of the word here a bit,
10:36but Jackie Estacado definitely has the super part down.
10:40When I was growing up,
10:41the family had codes.
10:42We did business.
10:43We looked out for the people.
10:44I believe we ought to honor those codes.
10:47Now, Pauly?
10:48He's just a parasite.
10:50Wants to bleed me dry.
10:52Another game based on a non-Marvel or DC published comic,
10:56this time coming from Image's top cow imprint,
10:58The Darkness follows Jackie
11:00after his mob boss uncle tries to assassinate him.
11:02What saves him is the titular demon
11:05that has clung to his family for generations,
11:07which gives him ungodly power
11:09and is satiated by feasting on hearts.
11:11Needless to say,
11:13this one gets pretty brutal
11:14and pretty damn fun.
11:22Powers granted by The Darkness
11:24made it stand out from other first-person shooters,
11:26and there was a surprisingly deep story of loss
11:29to go along with the vicious gameplay.
11:32Lego Batman the Video Game
11:34Apologies to all the DC fans for taking so long,
11:37but we're about to have a nice stretch of domination here.
11:47After other Lego games proved the formula was actually great,
11:51Traveler's Tales turned their attention to Gotham City,
11:53and the results were delightful,
11:55being both bigger and more detailed than previous games.
11:59Batman, Robin, Nightwing,
12:01and a cavalcade of iconic foes
12:03from Mr. Freeze to Killer Croc
12:04all got the charming plastic treatment.
12:07In a year without a truly dominant superhero title,
12:10Lego Batman delivered consistent, joyful entertainment
12:13that proved the genre didn't always need to be big
12:16to be great.
12:26Batman Arkham Asylum
12:28Pardon the overused term,
12:30but Arkham Asylum really was a game-changer.
12:33With writing from Paul Dini
12:35and the returning voices of Kevin Conroy,
12:37Mark Hamill,
12:38and Arlene Sorkin,
12:39it was a tremendous reunion
12:41for fans of the 90s animated series.
12:43Ta-da!
12:45Honey, I'm home!
12:47Come on in!
12:52Beyond that,
12:53with a creepy, intricately designed setting
12:56and a slew of memorable rogues from Batman's history,
12:59it is simply a fantastic Batman story in its own right.
13:03Then there's the free-flow combat system
13:06and satisfying gadgets,
13:07both of which make taking on the Dark Knight's many foes a blast.
13:11Not only did it establish a franchise,
13:13its influence would be felt throughout the 2010s.
13:19Mom?
13:20Help us, bros!
13:23Don't let us die!
13:26Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions
13:28Coming off the success of Arkham Asylum,
13:31the pressure was on for superhero games across the board,
13:34and Beanox rose to the challenge in an unexpected way.
13:37Hey, big guy!
13:38Drinks are on me!
13:40Oh, the water!
13:44It's taking me apart!
13:47Rather than one world,
13:49the story of Shattered Dimensions spans four,
13:51focusing on four entirely different iterations of Spider-Man.
13:55That may sound unremarkable now,
13:57but in 2010,
13:59utilizing different mechanics
14:00while playing through visually different settings
14:02of the amazing, noir, 2099, and ultimate universes
14:06was fresh and exciting.
14:08The key differences between the four heroes
14:10kept the experience from getting stale.
14:12Plus, putting four wildly different interpretations
14:15of the same character together
14:16was a creative achievement
14:18that would pay off in other ways
14:20for years to come.
14:21Call him Vulture.
14:22Call him whatever you want.
14:24I'll always call him
14:25I'm the bastard who killed my uncle.
14:27And not just kill him.
14:32Hungry.
14:35Still regarded as one of the best superhero games of all time,
14:39Arkham City was more than just an improvement
14:41on its predecessor.
14:43By going open world,
14:44Rocksteady changed what was possible
14:46in the ever-expanding subgenre
14:48of action-adventure games.
14:50Whatever you go, Batman,
14:51I'll fight you!
14:59This won't take a lot!
15:01An entire section of Gotham
15:03had been transformed into an open-air prison.
15:05Gliding between its gothic rooftops,
15:08fighting off goons in dark alleys,
15:10contending with the larger cast of villains,
15:12there was naturally plenty to do.
15:14From the world design that kept you itching to play,
15:17to the storytelling that wove together threads
15:19involving Hugo Strange, the Joker,
15:21Ra's al Ghul, and Catwoman,
15:23it was a Batman fan's dream game.
15:26And one that, to many,
15:27has yet to be topped.
15:29I figured you'd have a little more fight in you!
15:32Guess I figured wrong.
15:35LEGO Batman 2 DC Superheroes.
15:382012 was one of several years
15:40that were light on superhero games.
15:42Nevertheless, LEGO Batman 2 is a strong follow-up
15:45to what Traveler's Tales achieved with the first game.
15:49You like dodge'ums, Batman?
15:51Because...
15:52Ah, forget it.
15:54Obviously, one of the game's biggest draws
15:56was its wildly expansive roster.
15:59Stretching far beyond the boundaries of Gotham,
16:01the list now included heroes like Superman,
16:03Wonder Woman, and The Flash,
16:05and villains like Captain Cold and Lex Luthor.
16:08And, for the first time in a LEGO game,
16:11these icons were fully voiced,
16:13adding much more warmth and personality.
16:15The absurdist humor was still in top, goofy form,
16:18and it offered yet another breezy action experience,
16:21both solo and in co-op.
16:31Injustice, Gods Among Us.
16:33After the creators of Mortal Kombat
16:35blended their universe with that of DC Comics in 2008,
16:38they got a chance at an original story
16:40with the publisher's characters with Injustice.
16:43I could've prevented Metropolis!
16:45Saved my family!
16:46Crime took my family too, Clark.
16:49If you weren't the gun!
16:51The story focuses on an alternate Earth
16:53ruled over by an oppressive Superman
16:55after the Joker tricks him into killing Lois Lane.
16:58As we see heroes from the main universe cross over,
17:01it's a fascinating what-if scenario,
17:03full of emotionally heavy interactions
17:06as we learn more about the dark, alternate history.
17:08On top of the story,
17:10the mechanics were deep enough
17:11to sustain a competitive scene
17:13while remaining accessible enough
17:14that casual fans could feel like gods themselves.
17:18Is that enough?
17:22I saved this world!
17:23Now I'll save it from you!
17:29Infamous Second Son.
17:30It may not be a traditional superhero series,
17:33but Infamous is still full of super heroics.
17:37And honestly, Second Son was a clear winner in 2014.
17:53Seattle became a gorgeous sandbox
17:56thanks to Sucker Punch's level of care in world design.
17:59Even better, each ability Delson can absorb
18:01fundamentally changes how you interact with
18:04and move through the world.
18:06It of course didn't hurt that unleashing them on enemies
18:08was also fluid and satisfying.
18:11With completely new tech,
18:12it was a strong step forward for gameplay and visuals,
18:15and it was an early showcase
18:17of what the PlayStation 4 was truly capable of.
18:35Batman Arkham Knight.
18:37Although it may not have reached the heights of Arkham City,
18:40Rocksteady's conclusion still clearly deserves
18:42to be recognized as the achievement it is.
18:45Do you really think Scarecrow's crazy enough
18:47to detonate a chemical weapon in Gotham?
18:50I won't let that happen, Jim.
18:52It was enormous in every sense,
18:54with scope and ambition suitable for a final chapter.
18:57Combat and gadget systems were naturally fine-tuned,
19:01making hand-to-hand encounters even more fun.
19:03The Batmobile's integration certainly divided fans,
19:06yet the sheer spectacle of driving that hulking machine
19:09through a rain-soaked Gotham was undeniably cinematic,
19:13especially thanks to the new-gen visuals.
19:23The story was another element that divided fans,
19:26with the Arkham Knight's secret identity
19:28being both obvious and telegraphed.
19:31Still, it mostly stuck the landing
19:32with an emotionally affecting ending,
19:34closing the book on a beloved era.
19:37Batman Arkham VR.
19:39However, while that era may have ended,
19:41this universe, as we all know, didn't.
19:43Rocksteady followed Arkham Knight up
19:45with a bite-sized VR chapter.
19:48While virtual reality gaming was finding its footing in 2016,
19:51this was a compelling case for the technology's potential.
19:55Rather than a full-scale action game,
19:57Arkham VR was an intimate mystery
19:59set between city and knight.
20:01Putting on the cowl,
20:02using the gadgets and suit,
20:04then going through crime scenes
20:05as the world's greatest detective,
20:07it created a strong sense of presence.
20:09The device was registered to City Vision Demolitions.
20:13They're demolishing an old sewer system
20:15beneath Founders Island.
20:16The sewer could be the killer's hideout.
20:19Unfortunately, it's an incredibly brief experience,
20:22inventive and immersive.
20:23We only wish it was longer.
20:26Injustice 2.
20:27Injustice left players craving more
20:29from the alternate reality,
20:31which Netherrealm thankfully followed up on.
20:33Although the story didn't quite hit the same highs
20:35as the first game,
20:36everything else from its visuals to its gameplay
20:39was a marked improvement.
20:52There was a new level of strategy with the gear system,
20:55which let players customize their fighter's look
20:57with stat-boosting equipment.
20:58Of course, one of the bigger draws
21:00was seeing what other heroes the devs could include.
21:03The likes of Gorilla Grodd, Poison Ivy, and Black Canary
21:06spanned the legendary lineage of DC,
21:09with DLC going even further,
21:11offering a wide array of fighting styles to choose from.
21:24Marvel's Spider-Man.
21:25After being outshined in video games for several years,
21:29Spider-Man came back stronger than ever
21:31with the help of Insomniac Games.
21:32Although the studio had released many excellent games in the past, nothing prepared Marvel
21:37fans for the glory that was to come.
21:50The web swinging was physics-defying poetry, one of the most satisfying movement systems
21:55in open-world gaming history.
21:57But what elevated it beyond a mechanical achievement was the story.
22:01A Peter Parker, several years into his career, juggling failure, love, loss, and responsibility
22:07with maturity.
22:19Beyond the wonderful characterization of the lead character, villain work was also exceptional.
22:25From Spidey's classic rogues, to main threat Mr. Negative, to Peter's tragic friendship
22:30with Otto Octavius.
22:31Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 The Black Order
22:34It had been quite a long time since the last Ultimate Alliance, and while Team Ninja's
22:40revival is probably the weakest in the trilogy, that doesn't mean it isn't a bombastically
22:45fun superhero romp.
22:56Taking inspiration from the MCU at the time, it followed a huge roster of characters banding
23:02against Thanos and his Black Order, in search of the Infinity Stones.
23:06As such, you have a ton of characters to unlock, both beloved icons and fresh newcomers.
23:13Local co-op remained the beating heart of the experience, making it the ideal couch game for
23:18an era where those were increasingly rare.
23:30It wasn't a reinvention of the formula, but it was a warm, energetic, and lovable return of something we had
23:36thought dead.
23:37Marvel's Spider- Miles Morales
23:39Although it was more of a smaller side story than a full-fledged sequel, Miles Morales' solo
23:45adventure proved itself a vital piece of the puzzle.
23:48Your holiday spirit's a little overzealous this year, Alexei!
24:01Traversal and combat was naturally just as fluid as it was the first time around, but Miles himself
24:07came with new tricks, the ability to turn invisible and emit electric blasts.
24:12This was only one way he was made to feel different from Peter.
24:15The other was its story, about a young man finding his identity as a hero while navigating Harlem,
24:21family, and his newfound powers.
24:24I'm New York's only Spider-Man.
24:33I'm New York's only Spider-Man.
24:35Set during the holidays and scored with an orchestral hip-hop blend,
24:39it had a warmth that helped establish Miles as a hero in his own right.
24:43Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
24:45As an apparent consequence to Square Enix's middling Avengers game in 2020,
24:50it seems many players chose to stay away from the publisher's next Marvel title.
24:55That will forever be a shame, because in the hands of Eidos Montreal, the Guardians of the Galaxy soar.
25:12The banter between Peter Quill and his teammates was so naturally written and their growth over
25:17the course of the game was extraordinary to behold. Combat was a blast, flipping around and blasting
25:23foes as Star-Lord while commanding teammates to use different abilities which offered a small
25:28layer of strategy. The soundtrack pulled from 80's rock with the same unhinged commitment as the
25:33movies, particularly during Team Huddles, which could enhance your abilities while allowing you to rock out.
25:53We've seen many retro revivals over the years, though Shredder's Revenge remains one of the very best.
25:59Calling back to the classic beat-em-up hits the Turtles used to star in,
26:03the developers at Tribute Games delivered exactly what their name implies, a loving tribute.
26:15More than that, though, it's a much-needed enhancement on a decades-old formula.
26:19Controls are as smooth as silk, and character movesets are just varied enough to keep everything fresh.
26:26It looks astonishing, too. From every level detail to the character animations,
26:31which now include those like Master Splinter and April O'Neil.
26:35Plus, since up to six players can join the brawl, there's plenty of frantic, beat-em-up joy to be
26:41had.

26:49Marvel's Spider-Man 2
26:51Although the story of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has received criticism from fans,
26:55there's no denying how much fun it is to play.
26:58Insomniac's third entry in their Spider-Man universe was their most ambitious yet, and it mostly delivered.
27:15With both Peter and Miles as joint protagonists, and with Pete getting an enticing new symbiote suit,
27:22there is no shortage of moments where the gameplay isn't a blast.
27:25And this is in particular thanks to the PlayStation 5's dual-sense controller,
27:30making you feel every punch and web-thwip.
27:33Plus, while the symbiote storyline was seen as rushed by some,
27:36it brought out darker corners of Peter's personality,
27:39as well as interesting new layers to Yuri Lowenthal's performance.
27:51Marvel Rivals
27:52With a universe full of different power sets,
27:55Marvel can fit into any kind of game genre that features combat.
27:59With Marvel Rivals, NetEase helped the company conquer the team-based hero shooter.
28:06This is real firepower!
28:13Your powers are mine!
28:15Much like those that came before it, there's an addictive hook built into the game's DNA
28:19that makes it truly hard to put down.
28:22And with how popular the Marvel license is,
28:24there is an authentic joy seeing characters both big and small
28:28get together for a variety of different team comps.
28:31As a live service game, Marvel Rivals has only grown bigger and better since its release.
28:36Through new characters and a multitude of updates featuring tweaks to gameplay,
28:40it keeps legions of fans coming back for more.
28:50Dispatch
28:51A smaller scale superhero tale, and one of the few with wholly original characters,
28:56Dispatch was also one of the most talked about games of 2025.
29:05Dispatch
29:05Got any more great advice?
29:12Combining a superhero world with the setting of a workplace comedy,
29:16players are tasked with navigating new professional relationships and a new responsibility.
29:21While on the job, you get to decide which power sets are best suited for which task.
29:26And while not, you get to know your super-powered colleagues through all their faults and strengths.
29:32The game features pristine world building, marvelous writing and voice acting,
29:36and a stunning visual style that seems lifted straight from a comic.
29:40All while maintaining the stress of your new job, making you feel like your choices really matter.
29:45Then we talk tech stuff for like a whole hour.
29:48Staying here to take me to jail.
29:50That's how I ended up in a Phoenix program.

30:20LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight
30:24Who are you?
30:27I'm Batman.
30:28One may think the LEGO Batman hook might have died out by now,
30:32but by blending it with combat heavily inspired by Rocksteady's beloved Arkham series,
30:37Legacy of the Dark Knight proves there's still a lot of life left here.
30:42It feels just as good to pummel goons here as it did back then,
30:46paired weirdly well with the tried and true absurdist humor of LEGO games.
30:51More importantly though, it's a purely joyful celebration of Batman as it always has been,
30:56with an original story that draws from decades of history, a huge roster of characters, and local
31:03co-op, an increasingly nicer thing to see in 2026.
31:15What's your all-time favorite superhero game, and which do you think are hidden gems?
