Gagosian presents Marcel Duchamp’s editioned readymades fifty years after their first American showing at the same Madison Avenue building. Duchamp, a defining avant-gardist, provoked audiences with “Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2)” (1912) at the 1913 Armory Show. His readymades began with a bicycle wheel on a stool, followed by “Bottle Rack” (1914) and “Fountain” (1917), a urinal signed “R. Mutt” and rejected from exhibition. Many originals were later lost. In 1964 Arturo Schwarz issued fourteen editioned replicas, shown in 1965 at Cordier & Ekstrom. Works such as “Boîte-en-valise” further questioned originality and authorship, anticipating later appropriation.
