India turns to corals and seagrass to shield against rising sea levels

On a shrinking island off India's southern coast, workers thread bright green seagrass shoots onto wooden frames before they are planted on the ocean floor. The restoration work unfolding on Kariyachalli island aims to use artificial reefs, transplanted corals and seagrass meadows to boost its natural defenses, slow erosion and protect the mainland from surging seas. "If you are not able to provide that resilience, you are absolutely at the mercy of vulnerabilities," says senior state official Supriya Sahu.

00:36For a state like Tamil Nadu, the population depends upon the coastal economy, the blue
00:42economy.
00:43And if you are not able to provide that resilience, you are absolutely at the mercy of vulnerabilities
00:52of storm surges, or cyclonic storms, or sea level rise, and so on, and also erosion.
01:28For a state like this, it is a great concern for me, because it is a great concern for me.
01:49What we are doing is, we are restoring corals to keep the land of the land of the land.
01:52keep the biomass intact. So in a way, corals will adapt themselves for this deteriorating
01:59scenario. That is the only way. If we leave it as such, they may die. We don't know. But
02:06because you know, you heard about this, that super El Niño. If we keep restoring and keep
02:14the coral biomass intact, they will eventually adapt to the changing climatic conditions and
02:20will survive and will form the future reef.
03:08I will do it.
