Watch: PCHR’s intervention during the Item 7 General Debate, calling on UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk and his Office (United Nations Human Rights ) to finally recognize the situation in Gaza for what it is: a genocide.

Such long-overdue recognition would, among other things, acknowledge the suffering of victims and increase pressure on States to act in accordance with their legal obligations under the Genocide Convention to bring the ongoing genocide to an end as it approaches its fourth year.

00:00Thank you.
00:01I give the floor to the representative of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights.
00:05Vice President PCHR welcomes the updated U.N. database of businesses
00:10involved in activities related to illegal israelis settlements
00:13and reiterates its call on Member States to ensure that companies under their jurisdiction
00:18do not contribute or benefit from the settlement enterprise.
00:21Mr. Vice President, nearly three years into the live stream genocide in Gaza,
00:26The evidence is overwhelming. To this date, senior Israeli officials continue to publicly declare their genocidal intent towards Palestinians.
00:34Palestinian, Israeli, and international human rights organizations, legal scholars, UN mandate holders, and the UN Commission of Inquiry have all
00:42reached findings of genocide in Gaza.
00:45Why then has the High Commissioner for Human Rights still not acknowledged this reality for what it is?
00:50The High Commissioner is not merely another voice. His office carries significant legal authority and moral weight within the international
00:57human rights system and the wider international justice system.
01:01A clear acknowledgement from the High Commissioner would carry considerable institutional weight, reinforce the urgency of the obligation to prevent
01:09genocide, and exert pressure on states to act to end the ongoing atrocities in Gaza in line with their obligations
01:15under the Genocide Convention.
01:17We therefore call on the High Commissioner to simply act as his predecessors, rightly did in relation to other situations,
01:26to acknowledge that situation in Gaza is one of genocide,
01:29and to make preventing further genocidal acts and ensuring accountability for them central to the office's response. I thank you.
01:38Thank you.
