00:02President Trump has a new plan for keeping artificial intelligence safe, and he's putting
00:07much of the responsibility in the companies building it.
00:10Trump met with some of the industry's biggest names at the White House Tuesday and announced
00:14a new voluntary safety agreement.
00:16The companies are committing to internal controls and outside reviews as they develop more powerful
00:22AI systems.
00:23Well, there's a belief that there should be tremendous self-regulation, and we automatically
00:28have regulation with the Department of Justice, the FBI, all of that.
00:32But the self-regulation is very important.
00:35Trump says the agreement will be morally binding and plans to name someone to oversee it.
00:41That's well short of the government guardrails some AI leaders and lawmakers have been calling
00:45for.
00:46But Democratic Senator Mark Warner says self-policing isn't enough.
00:50He pushed the Senate Tuesday to require safety testing and incident reporting for the most
00:56advanced AI systems, saying, Are we really going to trust the industry to self-police
01:00on something that goes beyond what is happening?
01:03I'm not an AI doomer, but the ability to have these AI agents take over, shut down part of
01:08the financial system, is real.
01:10We should heed the call from the experts.
01:13Earlier in the day, Trump also launched America.gov, a new AI-powered portal designed to give people
01:19one place to search for federal information and services.
01:22With America.gov, the federal government no longer stands in your way, and it stands only
01:29at your service.
01:30And that's what we're doing.
01:31We're simplifying it, we're glamorizing it, we're making it what it should be.
01:35Trump signed an executive order requiring federal agencies to begin integrating their public
01:40services into America.gov within 90 days.
01:43For now, the site can search government information.
01:46The plan is to eventually let people do things like renew passports or enroll in Medicare directly
01:53through it.
