00:00That ambiance was unreal, the fans are incredible, and bam, right from the jump.
00:06You know, first pitch you saw, bam, Fernando Tatis, home run, later in the inning, bam, Manny Machado, home run.
00:12Michael King, fitting up his last name.
00:15He was unhittable last night.
00:23We couldn't script it any better, I feel like that, what happened tonight.
00:27And today was a beautiful baseball night over here for every San Diegan.
00:33I mean, I am obsessed with looking at Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis sitting indoors with the sunglasses on,
00:42and I couldn't have said it any better myself.
00:45A beautiful baseball night for every San Diegan.
00:50I mean, look at this picture.
00:51That's amazing.
00:53That's San Diego.
00:54That's Padres baseball.
00:57Let me tell you, I'm obsessed with this team.
01:01That atmosphere, the fans, the team, the star power, complete domination by the home team.
01:09Everything in that game couldn't have gone any better for the Padres if they wrote the script themselves.
01:14And let me tell you something.
01:16This is great for baseball.
01:18This is exactly what baseball needs.
01:20I'm going to tell you why.
01:21Number one, and we told you this leading up to the postseason.
01:25The Padres are great.
01:27The Padres' first half of the season was a fluke and it was deplorable.
01:30Second half of the season, San Diego Padres have been the best team in baseball.
01:34And if I'm doing a confidence ranking here when it comes to the National League, it's Dodgers, number one.
01:43And what I love about the Padres, they are so confident.
01:47They are borderline cocky.
01:50They're ridiculously arrogant in a good way.
01:53There's such great belief in that clubhouse and you see it on the field.
01:58And they just go out there and kick ass and take names.
02:01Think about that game, right?
02:02And I picked the Padres to win last night.
02:05I picked them to win the series.
02:06You know, PCA and the Cubs come in and they're feeling pretty good.
02:09And PCA is going to be the unanimous MVP.
02:12He's going to get every first place vote.
02:13And he had one of the best National League seasons ever.
02:15This team did not necessarily have the best September.
02:18The pitching was not 100%.
02:21And bam!
02:22The Padres just killed them right from the jump.
02:25The San Diego fan is amazing.
02:29This is not one of those let's go to the beach kind of California towns.
02:34This is a baseball city.
02:36It's a sports city.
02:37The Chargers inexplicably left San Diego, went to L.A.
02:41No one cares about the Chargers in Los Angeles.
02:43So they stayed in San Diego.
02:45And this matters here because the San Diego sports fan is amazing.
02:49And this is the team they have.
02:51The Chargers left.
02:53A lot of fans in San Diego hate them.
02:55They didn't just leave.
02:56They went to Los Angeles of all places.
02:59And I just love that last night.
03:01That ambiance was unreal.
03:03The fans are incredible.
03:05And bam!
03:06Right from the jump.
03:07You know, first pitch you saw.
03:08Bam!
03:09Fernando Tatis home run.
03:10Later the inning.
03:11Bam!
03:12Manny Machado home run.
03:13Michael King.
03:14Fitting of his last name.
03:16He was unhittable last night.
03:19Did not allow a hit in his first six innings.
03:23Went seven.
03:25Shutout innings.
03:26Dominance.
03:28Eight strikeouts.
03:29Royal dominance.
03:30And remember, the Padres got Michael King from the Yankees in the Juan Soto deal.
03:38And I remember loving it at the time as a Yankee fan because Juan Soto is unbelievable.
03:43But I hated giving up Michael King because his stuff was great.
03:46Still make the trade, obviously, always.
03:48But this guy is capable of this all the time.
03:52And I just love Tatis on the bases last night.
03:55He's able to steal a base.
03:57Ball trickles away.
03:58Bam!
03:58Takes off and is able to score.
04:00Manny Machado not only hits the home run.
04:03Bam!
04:03A double later.
04:04The scene with Musgrove.
04:05Obviously, you know, he's coming back from injury.
04:08He's the San Diego kid.
04:09Literally grew up there.
04:11That whole scene, if you didn't have the chills last night, check your pulse.
04:15I just love Bogart's hitting the home run.
04:18And I just love the mentality that the Padres play with.
04:22This is one of the great things and great ambiances in sports when you start talking about a baseball crowd.
04:28And it's easy and obvious to talk about Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium or Dodger Stadium or Philadelphia
04:35in terms of great baseball ambiances for the playoffs.
04:39San Diego's unreal.
04:41And if you didn't know, you knew it last night.
04:43And I'm just going to give you the take again because it's important to stress it.
04:47Look at the playoff bracket.
04:49With all due respect to the Milwaukee Brewers, we are going to get the Dodgers and the Padres meeting in
04:57the NLCS.
04:58And wouldn't it just be kind of fitting?
05:00And I'm picking the Dodgers to win the World Series.
05:02Let me just give you that as a backdrop.
05:04But clearly, they're more vulnerable than they've been in prior years.
05:09Let's be clear going into the playoffs.
05:11Wouldn't it be something if the Padres could beat, think about this path, the MVP, and find a way to
05:18beat the one seed,
05:20and find a way to beat the big bad, big brother, the L.A. Dodgers,
05:24and then find a way to beat whatever chump comes out of the American League
05:28and win their first ever World Series?
05:31Listen, I would love to see a Dodger three-peats for baseball.
05:35I'm a diehard Yankee fan.
05:36You know where my rooting interest is.
05:38I think a San Diego Padres World Series would be so great for the game.
05:44They're one of the franchises that has never won the big one.
05:49It would be incredible.
05:50Absolutely awesome.
05:52I thought the Padres would beat the Cubs in this first-round series.
05:56I originally said it would be three.
05:58I think they're going to close them out tonight.
06:00I love that ambiance.
06:02I love this team.
06:03I love the fans and the roster, the cocky nature of the San Diego Padres.
06:11They are great for baseball.
06:13In Atlanta, nothing went, according to Don Mattingly's script, in the Phillies' Game 1 loss.
06:18Now, Mattingly is under fire for opting to go with his closer, Duren, in the seventh inning.
06:24And, of course, we know it now.
06:27Duren gave up the game-winning homer, pulsating to Austin Riley in the eighth.
06:33It's a decision Donnie baseball can live with despite the result.
06:38Any time you lose a game late, obviously it's frustrating, but, you know, in our minds, we had our best
06:44guy out there.
06:47You know, you live with this one.
06:50It's important here to tell the full story.
06:53I agree completely with Don Mattingly.
06:56That was an awesome move, going to the closer in a non-save situation.
07:02And I think there's a couple of important things here to express, right?
07:07Number one, you couldn't pitch Wheeler because you had to pitch him over the weekend to make the playoffs.
07:13The Philadelphia Phillies, a team that I thought would end up leapfrogging Atlanta, never happened during the course of the
07:19regular season.
07:20The Phillies limped into the playoffs, again, had to win on Sunday to make it when it looked like they
07:26were going to be a lock in August, let's be crystal clear.
07:29The bullpen stinks.
07:31The rotation is injured.
07:33The team is injured.
07:34Louisa Rice, what a pickup that was at the deadline.
07:37He got hurt.
07:38He's not on the active roster.
07:41These kind of situations all factor in.
07:44Plus, game flow.
07:46Chris Sale, going up against the Philadelphia Phillies, you thought was a monster advantage for the Atlanta Braves.
07:55Luzardo comes back, and he's only supposed to pitch a couple of innings.
08:00Five innings, one run ball.
08:02He was absolutely fantastic.
08:04So, Don Mattingly said, I don't want to hear about, quote-unquote, save situation.
08:09You have to steal game one.
08:11The stats and facts and figures on a team losing game one of a wild-card round series, and then
08:17losing that game and winning a series, it rarely happens in this new format.
08:22Like, it's just a handful of times.
08:24So, you had to win this game to give yourself a chance.
08:28Listen, Duren is the only relief pitcher.
08:31Ask a Philly fan.
08:32The only relief pitcher that you can rely upon.
08:34And he's been lights out.
08:36Only give up two homers in the regular season.
08:37Now, Austin Riley had a down year, no question about that.
08:42But, he just has a knack for the moment in the postseason, doesn't he?
08:46I mean, this is like Chipper Jones-esque when you look at the ability for Riley.
08:51That's Austin's music.
08:52Able to take advantage of that pitch from Duren and just got it out, and that scene was off the
08:59charts.
08:59Look, there were so many great and cool moments from day one of the wild-card round in the postseason.
09:06You know, from what happened with the White Sox, to Schlittler, to Rice, to Tatis, and Machado, and Musgrove, and
09:13everything that happened with the Padres.
09:15That home run by Riley was the signature moment of day one of the baseball postseason.
09:22The Atlanta fans went bonkers.
09:25Riley went nuts.
09:26The team went nuts.
09:27That was a classic jolt.
09:29It was the only move for Don Mattingly to make.
09:33Listen, if he didn't hit the home run, he would have pitched the next inning, too.
09:37I mean, you couldn't pitch anyone else.
09:40They had no one else to throw.
09:41So, I give Don Mattingly credit.
09:44It wasn't about analytics.
09:45It wasn't about what has been done in the past.
09:48It wasn't about saving the closer for a save situation.
09:52There was nothing to wait for.
09:53There was nothing to save.
09:54You had to take your chances and go for the jugular there.
09:57You had already, in a game that was weird, sloppy defense on both sides.
10:03This was tremendous baseball by Don Mattingly.
10:07It didn't work.
10:08I don't think they're going through a bad pitch.
10:10You credit Riley, took it opposite field, and cranked it.
10:14That was a great piece of hitting.
10:15I mean, he's country strong, and he drove that one into right field.
10:19Don Mattingly deserves a break, though.
10:21You have to consider everything with the Phillies before you criticize my guy, Donnie Baseball.
10:27Coming up, it's time for Where the Sun Don't Shine.
10:29Jerry Jones unhappy with his coach.
10:31Jim Harbaugh unhappy with his quarterback.
10:33And the Buccaneers and the Texans are on the brink of disaster, if they're not there already.
10:39Next on Chime Time.
10:44There is no explanation you're satisfied with.
10:48None.
10:48Let's be sure that we all understand that.
10:51They don't have one that they're satisfied with.
10:56We made mistakes during that time.
10:59There's no question about it.
11:01So there is no explanation.
11:03But there's an evaluation of how not to make the same mistakes again, which is what you should be doing.
11:12You can't get that back.
11:13No way to get it back.
11:15I'll take accountability for it.
11:18It's football and life.
11:19It's what happens.
11:20But I hurt our chance to win that game.
11:22And I'll be better.
11:26Will you, though?
11:28Sun was not shining on the Cowboys on their long flight back from Rio on Sunday night.
11:32As we get our results that, at the end of the day, just was not great if you're a fan
11:39of the Dallas Cowboys.
11:40And Jerry Jones, he was on 105.7, the fan in Dallas.
11:43And he was not happy with Brian Schottenheimer.
11:46And let's be honest, you shouldn't be.
11:49Because Brian Schottenheimer ruined that game.
11:51And when you have an opportunity to win a game, and you outplay the Baltimore Ravens,
11:55and you screw it up in terms of clock management, game management, and whatever the hell happened with A,
12:01calling the timeout after second down, and then B, third down, that throw, which Shottie took blame for.
12:08Dak had Pickens wide open.
12:10Shottie said he told Dak, if it's not there, instantly throw it away.
12:13Whatever the hell happened, that's a breakdown.
12:15And then, of course, everything that happened on not squib kicking, seven seconds, you go full McDermott,
12:22Lamar, 27 yards, hits a flowers.
12:25We all know what transpired with Loop making the kick, and this is a mess.
12:29And listen, as Yogi once said, it's getting late early.
12:33Because if you take a look at this schedule for the Dallas Cowboys,
12:38you have to now win some games, and you have to go on a run.
12:43And I know the Texans have a great home field, and they have great players on defense.
12:49They're winless.
12:50But, you know, Will Anderson and company, they will strike fear.
12:54I don't care.
12:55Here's the demand here of the Dallas Cowboys.
12:59Beat Houston.
13:00Then, when you look at the schedule, go on a run and say, you need to find four more wins.
13:05Beat Houston.
13:06Beat Tampa Bay.
13:07Beat the Green Bay Packers.
13:09The Philadelphia Eagles are broken.
13:12That should be a win.
13:14Beat Arizona.
13:15Beat the Indianapolis Colts.
13:16The Niners game is a home game.
13:18Tennessee.
13:19The Philadelphia Eagles at home.
13:21And then, obviously, the tough game against Seattle.
13:24Everything that I've said about the Cowboys in the preseason, I still believe.
13:29I'm not going to tell you they've looked like world beaters.
13:31Christian Parker's defense has not done a good job.
13:34Let's be crystal clear about that.
13:35I thought they'd be vastly improved on defense.
13:38That's not the case.
13:39They did not have good strategy, as bad a shot he was, whereas Christian Parker, you know,
13:43letting Zay Flowers go wide open in the middle.
13:46That defense, Mike Tomlin killed him on Football Night in America.
13:49I mean, it made absolutely no sense.
13:51Made no sense.
13:53Which makes this game, this week against the Texans, I don't want to call it a must win,
13:59because that means if you don't win, the season's over and they can still go on a run.
14:02But show me something.
14:04Hey, Shadi, show Jerry Jones something.
14:07Show the Cowboys fans something.
14:09The Rams have Philly this week, which ties in.
14:13Philadelphia has not looked good in three games.
14:16They won week one.
14:18They won week two.
14:19Barely.
14:20In both games against Washington and Tennessee,
14:23they look like hot garbage against Case Keenum and the Bears on Monday night.
14:29So, I expect the Salty Rams to win, which ties in here with the Cowboys.
14:37Because if the Cowboys can beat Houston, and they should, and that's a road game,
14:43but, you know, there are going to be tons of Cowboys fans at that stadium in Houston,
14:48still in Texas.
14:49Let's be crystal clear about that.
14:51So, then all of a sudden, you're going to have a tie with the Cowboys and the Eagles.
14:57And that matters here.
14:59Giants, by the way, could be in first place by the time week four ends.
15:03Not that the Giants are going anywhere with, you know, Jackson Dart out for the year
15:07and Brian Burns out for the year.
15:08And Washington, we'll see what happens with Jaden Daniels.
15:11It's not ruled out that, you know, he won't play.
15:14In fact, limited practice today.
15:17So, we got to throw Washington into the mix as well.
15:19They're coming off of a game where they beat Seattle in a stunner, which takes me back to the Cowboys.
15:25This is why sometimes I know it can be infuriating for Cowboys fans when Jerry Jones is every single week
15:32on 105.7,
15:33the fan in Dallas, and he's saying things that will drive people nuts.
15:37These comments I love.
15:39There needs to be accountability when it comes to the Cowboys.
15:42Brian Schottenheimer, the good times are over, okay?
15:48You know what time it is?
15:49It's winning time, okay?
15:51Last year was a nice little story.
15:53Dealt with adversity.
15:54Able to, you know, Micah Parsons trade.
15:57Not his fault.
15:58Keep everything together.
15:59Now, Brian Schottenheimer needs to coach and he needs to win.
16:04What happened in Rio was an international incident.
16:07That, simply put, violated sports, math, logic, all of it.
16:12That's why Jerry's pissed.
16:14Now, win.
16:16End of discussion.
16:18Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Javonte Williams, win.
16:22George Pickens, win.
16:24Defense, win.
16:26Hey, Shottie, win.
16:29Cowboys' next opponent, the Texans,
16:31who are on the brink of a lost season,
16:33having started 0-3 for the second consecutive year.
16:36The list of teams to start 0-3 and reach the postseason is short,
16:40but it does include last year's Houston Texans.
16:45It's almost like 0-3 start,
16:48you look at the teams that have done it in the past
16:50and the Texans got them right where they want them.
16:53I mean, you know, last couple times it's happened,
16:55the Houston Texans.
16:57Let me tell you something.
17:00I picked the Texans to make the playoffs
17:02in the beginning of the year.
17:04Last week, we did a panic or patience topic here on Shine Time
17:08with the winless teams, and I said,
17:10patience, the Texans are going to be just fine.
17:12And I expected them to beat the Indianapolis Colts.
17:16The Colts beat them, and the Colts didn't even play well.
17:19Daniel Jones was awful.
17:21Jonathan Taylor didn't run wild.
17:23The Texans right now are broken.
17:27C.J. Stroud does not look good.
17:29In defense of C.J., Nico Collins has missed the last couple of games.
17:33Flip side, we haven't seen anything from C.J. Stroud.
17:36I thought he was fine in week one against Buffalo,
17:38and I gave him a pass and stressed the positive.
17:40I know he had the fumble at the end, but he did some good things.
17:43We're now at a stage, right?
17:45And I think this is the best way to consider it and frame it.
17:48The Texans are 0-3.
17:51Do you believe that C.J. Stroud can make plays
17:55against this porous Dallas defense to put his team in position to win?
17:59If this game is competitive on Sunday,
18:03do you trust C.J. Stroud making a play?
18:06I don't.
18:07There's no evidence.
18:08His rookie season feels like a lifetime ago.
18:12The Jacksonville Jaguars are absolutely for real,
18:15and they have a tough game coming up against Cincinnati, obviously.
18:18That's going to be a lot of fun.
18:19A couple of big-time quarterbacks with Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow.
18:23Look, Jacksonville could easily lose that game,
18:25and then if Houston wins, 1-3, Jacksonville's 2-2,
18:30all of a sudden you're alive.
18:32Let me tell you something.
18:35I'm out.
18:36I don't think this offense can function.
18:39I don't think C.J. Stroud is good enough for this team to live up to,
18:45let's be clear, what the expectations were in that building,
18:48to make a true Super Bowl run.
18:50There's no way that's going to happen here with the Houston Texans.
18:53What a deplorable start to the season.
18:56Also sitting at 0-3, Jim Harbaugh's L.A. Chargers.
19:00Here's what he had to say when he was telling reporters about his quarterback,
19:06Justin Herbert.
19:07Yeah, to be better, to be better.
19:10And that drives Justin, that drives me, that drives his position coach,
19:18that drives Mike, the coordinator.
19:23I mean, it drives us all.
19:26So that kind of counts as Harbaugh killing Herbert because considering we've killed Harbaugh
19:33for just saying things that are beyond subject to hyperbole and turning Herbert into some
19:39combination of Tom Brady meets Patrick Mahomes, this counts as killing him.
19:46And understand, I'm not killing Jim Harbaugh.
19:49I'm praising him because Justin Herbert has to be better.
19:52It's easy and accurate to say, your receivers can't catch a cold.
19:57The line is terrible.
19:58You know, there are issues on defense.
20:00As Tom Brady said on the Fox broadcast,
20:04Herbert threw Buffalo a meatball sub, like a meatball in baseball, a pitch right down Broadway.
20:12Easy for a batter to just jack out of the park.
20:15Easy to result in a turnover.
20:17Justin Herbert has been dreadful this year.
20:20We could talk offensive line, talk receivers, talk coaching, talk Mike McDaniel, talk whatever
20:26else you want.
20:28Harbaugh nailed it.
20:29He needs to be better.
20:30And here's the problem.
20:32I don't think at this stage, and I've certainly been a Herbert guy, I don't think this team
20:38is capable of being better.
20:39I don't know if Herbert's ever going to get to the consistent level of greatness that we
20:44all expected from him all season long, all career long, frankly.
20:49Look at the schedule.
20:50The schedule for the Chargers, you can't find wins.
20:55Like, I'm not being subject to exaggeration and hyperbole.
20:59Houston?
21:01Jets?
21:03Patriots?
21:04Bucs?
21:05Maybe?
21:06They're not beating Seattle.
21:08In Seattle?
21:09That's not happening.
21:11They're not beating Denver.
21:12They're not beating Kansas City.
21:15And these are just games, you know, Denver and Kansas City, I really gave them a chance
21:18to win.
21:19And it always comes back to Arizona and Vegas to start the season.
21:23I am appreciative that Harbaugh's finally speaking the truth about his quarterback, but
21:28it might just be too little, too late.
21:30You're going to see people get fired with the Chargers.
21:33And again, just ship them to the Pacific Ocean.
21:36The only saving grace for the 0-3 Buccaneers, they play in the NFC South.
21:40The rest of the division is all one and two.
21:42They've been hit with the injury bug chief among them being Baker Mayfield, out at least
21:47three weeks with a dislocated thumb as Todd Bowles' seat gets hotter by the week.
21:53I don't know how Todd Bowles is going to keep his job.
21:55Seriously.
21:56And they like their quarterback, Daniels, who they drafted.
22:00And remember, and, you know, this is why we bring you the best guests on Shine Time.
22:06If you remember the interview that we did with Greg Cosell on Shine Time, we asked him
22:13for a sleeper quarterback in the draft.
22:16And he said Jalen Daniels would be that guy.
22:19And the Bucs and Jason Light, they picked him.
22:21Now, it sucks about Baker.
22:23I love Baker Mayfield.
22:24He's tough.
22:25Baker Mayfield has had a miserable season.
22:27Even before the thumb injury that's going to keep him out three-plus weeks, Baker Mayfield
22:33has been horrendous.
22:35Week one, terrible Cleveland game, stunningly atrocious.
22:39And then what we saw last week against Minnesota, I told you on Shine Time, Minnesota was the
22:45best bet of the week.
22:46And they absolutely proved it.
22:49So, Green Bay is the next game for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
22:54And the Packers have been dreadful.
22:58If, listen, this is a game, in theory, the Packers should win.
23:03And everyone, it's on record, my take on Green Bay, I don't think Jordan Love is that good.
23:07The running back position is the worst in the NFL.
23:10The O-line for Green Bay is terrible.
23:12Defense is terrible.
23:13You know, Daniel's making his first start in the NFL.
23:15If Green Bay can't win that game, then there are going to be bigger problems than anything
23:21else when it comes to the Green Bay Packers.
23:24But if the Bucs lose that game, go back to the schedule, Sam, if you can, please.
23:30When are they going to win?
23:32Like, the Green Bay game this week is the most winnable game that they will have in quite
23:37some time.
23:38I mean, Dallas, Pittsburgh, on the road in the division against Carolina.
23:44Everyone saw the Falcons.
23:46The Bears.
23:48I mean, Detroit.
23:49Detroit, this schedule, when you combine the teams that the Bucs are playing, in addition
23:56to how Tampa has looked, I think there's a very real chance that the first coach fired
24:02in the NFL is Todd Bowles.
24:04I don't know how he survives this season.
24:07There was a case to can him after last year.
24:11However, I think, and there are others you could argue, Shane Steichen from the Colts
24:15quickly comes to mind, if you're a betting man and you want to bet on people losing their
24:20job, I think Todd Bowles will be the first coach fired this NFL season.
24:26Coming up, Kaitlin Clark absolutely balled out last night as the Fever tied up their series
24:31against the Aces.
24:32But was it more impressive than the history made by the Liberty?
24:35Shine Time continues next.
24:39Welcome back to Shine Time.
24:41The New York Liberty made WNBA history last night in Brooklyn, becoming the first eight
24:47seed to ever knock off a one seed, eliminating the Minnesota Lynx in a two-game sweep.
24:54The championship basketball vibes continue in New York City, and honestly, this was incredible.
25:01And listen, the Liberty earned the eight seed.
25:04It was not a vintage, regular season for New York.
25:08But when this team is humming, when this team is cooking, they obviously have championship
25:13experience.
25:15This was awesome.
25:16Brianna Stewart, incredible.
25:18I was not surprised by this result in terms of the Liberty, kicking ass, taking names.
25:24This is who they are, and this is what they do.
25:27This was a terrific night in New York sports.
25:31Then, of course, Kaitlin Clark, who may have had the best game of her career last night
25:36in the Fever victory, 99-89 over the Aces to tie this series at a game apiece.
25:42And look, Kaitlin Clark just went out and pitched the perfect game.
25:4827 points, five three-pointers, 15 assists, and seven rebounds.
25:55Listen, I think at this stage, she is possessed.
26:00I am obsessed.
26:02Now, I always favor Asia Wilson and the Aces.
26:06You kind of get the sense if there was, you know, this kind of matchup where you would
26:11be ripe for an upset special with a lot of things percolating around this series, wouldn't
26:17be surprised in game three to see Kaitlin Clark and the Fever do it again.
26:22That right there is a show if you missed any portion of the show or a show earlier today
26:27on the Yankees and Red Sox.
26:28It was a banger.
26:30My God.
26:31You know what I'm going to do?
26:32I'm going to go watch it again.
26:33Then I'm going to watch it after that.
26:34Here's where I'm going to watch it.
26:36It's right there.
