00:00Joining us right now on Shine Time, the voice of Monday Night Football on ESPN, a legend in the broadcast
00:08booth, a man who has called some of the biggest moments in sports history, and let's be honest, most especially
00:14my guy, the great Joe Buck. Joe, how are you? I'm good, Adam. How are you, man? Good to see
00:20you. Great to see you. Doing wonderful. Can't wait for Monday Night Football with the Bills and the Rams on
00:26ESPN in Los Angeles.
00:28Also known as the Adam Shine Preseason Super Bowl. And when this came out, I said, this is my pick.
00:35This is the game that I think you're going to call on Valentine's Day on ESPN. Now, I still think
00:42that these two teams can meet in the Super Bowl. Bills were rolling before that brutal loss to New England.
00:48Let's start with Buffalo. What's your read on Josh Allen, the Bills headed into this game?
00:53You know, you follow this stuff like I do, and I've done all the reading this week, and I think
00:58the problem is with the defense. The defense has got to play better. They are thin in the secondary. They've
01:04got injuries. Some of that showed up in that New England Patriots loss that you talked about.
01:09But the defense has got to get better. And I'm hopeful for them that it will. Russo's playing out of
01:18his mind and is having as good a season as any defensive player in the National Football League.
01:24They've got some injuries up front, too. So, to me, the linebacker level's good. Secondary's got some issues. Defensive front's
01:33injured. Defense has got to get better. I'm sure you're like me. You feel like every time Josh Allen's got
01:38the ball, they're going to go down the field and score a touchdown.
01:41And I don't know that that's going to change. But if they're going to get to that Valentine's Day game,
01:46they've got to get better in their secondary. And this is going to be a big test against Matthew Stafford
01:51and Devontae Adams and Fukunakua.
01:53Yeah, summed it up perfectly. And frankly, I think on the back end, it's a bad matchup for him. And
01:58listen, I still have high hopes and I still live for Josh Allen. You know, they need to play better
02:03on defense. No question about it.
02:05And, Joe, I was all in on the Rams before the season. The talent, the coaching, the expectations, sky high.
02:11They've been a little flat to start. Now, for the record, I still very much believe in this team.
02:17What have you seen from the Rams and what lies ahead? Because that division has legitimately three Super Bowl contenders.
02:26Yeah, I mean, you know, they're they're a third place team right now. And, you know, the way they started
02:31the year in Melbourne and the way they approach that, you know, Sean McVay, after the Giants win, kind of
02:37alluded to it and said, well, you get a dumbass coach that, you know, overthinks how they should travel.
02:42And maybe they did the right thing. Maybe they didn't. Had they won, everybody would be doing it that way
02:47going forward. But they didn't. And they looked flat.
02:49They gave a lot to get Miles Garrett. He's played one game, does not have a tackle for them. And
02:55hopefully he comes back soon.
02:58It feels like they've got to build during the course of the regular season. Get Miles Garrett healthy. I think
03:04they're going to take their time with that. He did have surgery.
03:08I think they're going to be very careful with Aaron Donald and not wear him out in October and November.
03:14And they're going to ramp him up.
03:15So it's it's kind of like I don't know. It's like one of those teams that is good enough to
03:23survive the regular season.
03:24And if they're a wild card, who cares? They're going to be so talented by the end of the year.
03:29If they're healthy and rolling wherever they play, they play. And their ultimate home game would be Super Bowl 61.
03:36So I see it like you do. But, you know, from coaching to personnel to the ability to evolve as
03:46the season goes, I think they're right where they probably should be.
03:50I loved everything about your broadcast Monday night in New Orleans.
03:54And I told Ani Bosa, we had him on the show after the schedule was released.
03:58I was a great choice with the Falcons and the Saints, Monday night football, Superdome, the history, the emotion, 20th
04:04anniversary of the Saints return after Katrina.
04:08And look, doing national radio, Shine on Sports, Sirius XM, Mad Dog Sports Radio.
04:13I know how much that rivalry means. I think it's a top four rivalry in the NFL.
04:19You have teams that hate each other, fan bases that hate each other.
04:22That ambiance felt special and unbelievable. How would you describe what we witnessed?
04:29It was a great night until the visiting team came in and just whooped up on the Saints.
04:36They ruined the party. But that's football. That's sports.
04:39And I think we can all realize how Atlanta, with Michael Penix Jr. back in,
04:45they still are thin defensively, but playing great for Jeff Ulbrich.
04:52That's a dangerous team. And then coming off the night before, watching Carolina do what they did to Detroit,
04:59and the way their offense went up and down the field with a 300-yard passer and a receiver with
05:04150 and a running back with 100-plus,
05:07they seem to be dangerous all of a sudden.
05:09So maybe the NFC South that last year had Carolina winning it at 8-9 on the season is a
05:16little tougher than we thought at the beginning of the year.
05:20And I think it's because of the top two teams in the division.
05:22I don't know a lot of teams that want to go play that run game with the Atlanta Falcons right
05:27now.
05:27And I don't know anybody that's signing up for dealing with Bryce Young in the past game of the Panthers.
05:34So maybe that division's a little better than recent memory.
05:38And I'm anxious to see how that unfolds as we go forward.
05:41I'm with you completely.
05:42And listen, I'm still not even overlooking or discounting the Saints in that picture.
05:47They didn't have a good game.
05:48They have a plethora of injuries.
05:50But I'm with you here on the South.
05:52You know, it's funny.
05:53Leading up to that game, I had Drake London on the show.
05:56And I asked him, I said, I need a thesaurus.
05:58How do you describe B. John Robinson?
06:00And he said, I'll give you words that aren't in the dictionary.
06:03LeBron and Shohei.
06:05How do you describe what you see with B. John Robinson?
06:10I mean, yeah, if you want to go with just athletes and running backs in his sport,
06:17I would say the cut and jump cut ability of Barry Sanders.
06:22Now that's NFL royalty.
06:24And, you know, he's still 24 years old and he's got a ways to go.
06:29But at least physically and athletically, that's all there.
06:33And then the ability to catch passes like Marshall Falk out of the backfield,
06:38line him up in the slot.
06:39I remember Troy forever, you know, talking about Marshall Falk,
06:42maybe Thurman Thomas before him saying, you know,
06:44if he wasn't a running back and just wanted to be a slot receiver,
06:47he'd be one of the best slot receivers in the NFL.
06:50Oh, by the way, he can rush for 200 yards in a game.
06:53So he's got everything you want.
06:55He's a wonderful human being on top of all that.
06:59So, yeah, I mean, if Drake's saying that,
07:03comparing him to two greats in other sports, I'll stick within the NFL.
07:08But anywhere you want to look, he is a unique individual, great person, great player.
07:14Yeah, that's high praise in terms of those running backs coming from you.
07:17And I agree completely.
07:18Now, you and Troy were on the call, obviously, for the Rams and the Giants
07:22when Jackson Dart got hurt.
07:24Ah, awful moment for a young quarterback and for this Giants team.
07:28And it's kind of amazing.
07:29We look at the Giants there in first place.
07:32I don't expect that to hold.
07:33But my goodness, John Harbaugh.
07:36Take us through, Joe, as you see it, the impact that he's had on these Giants.
07:40I think it was the biggest offseason move in the NFL.
07:44I think he brings instant credibility, stability to that organization.
07:48He knows how to win.
07:51He is everything you want in a head coach.
07:54I think he demands accountability.
07:57You know, if Malik Neighbors is yelling for the ball in more vertical routes,
08:01I think John's got the ability with his resume to sit him down and go,
08:05hey, let's do this in a constructive way.
08:08It was sickening to see that with that Week 2 game at the Rams.
08:14It was like there was just a pall over the whole game the rest of the way.
08:19And Jackson Dart is one of the stars of the league.
08:21He loves the game.
08:23He loves to play.
08:24You know, I think just by virtue of what he ended up having done to his knee
08:28and then they basically had to rip the uniform off him that night,
08:32he was trying to get back in the ballgame, tells you all you need to know.
08:35I think they've got special young talent on that team.
08:38They just got to keep those guys healthy.
08:40And, you know, we could go on and on with the J.J. McCarthy trade.
08:44And what's that going to mean going forward?
08:46But for that young man, you just hope for the best with the recovery.
08:51I wouldn't bet against him.
08:54But that's a big deal.
08:55Listen, before the season, I loved the Cowboys.
08:59And I thought it's not like, you know, offseason hype or hyperbole for Dallas.
09:03I really thought they did a lot of smart things.
09:05Joe, I kind of still do.
09:07And the defense hasn't looked great.
09:09But love Prescott.
09:11Love what CeeDee Lamb did.
09:12That's the kind of game against Houston historically over the last 30 years they lose.
09:18I agree.
09:19Right?
09:19I mean, doesn't this feel a little different even at 2-2 for the Cowboys?
09:23Yeah, I mean, they're injury-wracked in their secondary.
09:28I mean, everybody's talked about it.
09:29And they're in a new defensive system.
09:31And that takes time.
09:32It takes time.
09:34And what they have to hope is here early in the year, they can just, you know, win the
09:38scoreboard battle with their offense.
09:40And I'm with you.
09:41That is a game.
09:43Well, they did it the week before against the Ravens.
09:46They should have won that game, could have won that.
09:49Let's say they could have won that game very, I don't want to say easily.
09:53But they could have won the game, maybe should have won the game.
09:55Then they go to Houston, and that's a game they don't win, and they win.
09:59And that did feel different to me.
10:02Houston got on top.
10:04They go down the field.
10:06CeeDee Lamb all the way down.
10:07He's got 19 catches, whatever it was.
10:11He has the ability to uncover no matter who's across from him.
10:16And Dak is seeing everything, delivering the ball.
10:19I'm with you.
10:20I'm not off the Dallas Cowboys at all.
10:23And I think they've just got to kind of weather this storm of the injuries defensively.
10:27But, my God, every team has just got to paragraph the guys that are hurt.
10:31You know, there's 15 guys on the injury report for the Bills that they're looking at right
10:37now.
10:37And it's October.
10:40So, you know, it's a lot for these teams to battle through these injuries.
10:45I'm with you.
10:46I'm not off the Cowboys at all.
10:48Kansas City's 4-0.
10:50You had them week number one.
10:51And honestly, when I saw that on the Monday Night Football schedule, I started, I'm like,
10:54is Mahomes going to be ready?
10:56Of course, it's Patrick Mahomes.
10:58He'll find a way to be out there.
11:00And every week, he just keeps getting better.
11:03Andy Reid, I think he's an all-timer.
11:05Mount Rushmore head coach.
11:06Kenneth Walker doing an amazing job.
11:08Just survived the Raiders.
11:10Are they the team to beat in the AFC?
11:13I think the Jags have been unbelievable.
11:16And if I was doing a power ranking, I'd put them number one.
11:204-0 is 4-0.
11:21Are the Chiefs the Chiefs once again?
11:24I think with regard to the Jags, I think you've got to get to the postseason and prove it.
11:29But yes, they can beat you a lot of different ways.
11:33Their defense is rolling.
11:34A lot of penalties.
11:35But they can throw it.
11:37They can run it.
11:38The quarterback looks fantastic.
11:39The head coach is really good.
11:41So yeah, I might put them number one, too.
11:44But then you've got the Chiefs and you've got all that success.
11:47And you've got a healthy Patrick Mahomes.
11:50I don't disagree.
11:52Just with the pedigree and with the postseason success that they've had,
11:56Kenneth Walker should be in the MVP conversation right now with what he's been able to do.
12:00And I've changed the dynamic of that offense.
12:03But it's still Patrick Mahomes.
12:05And he is getting healthier, seemingly, as we go.
12:08Stronger as we go.
12:10And I would say those are the top two with Buffalo right behind and needing to iron things out defensively.
12:16So yeah, we've got Jacksonville later in the year.
12:19I think we've got him against the Steelers down there, I believe.
12:24That could be right.
12:25That could be wrong.
12:26But yeah, I'm anxious to see him.
12:29They got to the postseason last year.
12:31Bill's got them.
12:32We'll see what they can do.
12:34Clearly, they're the class of the AFC South.
12:37Four weeks into the season, give us a team that has surprised you in a good way, a great way.
12:43Flip side, a team that has been perhaps your biggest disappointment or surprised you in a negative way.
12:48I mean, the negative one is easier to probably answer, and that's Green Bay.
12:53And it's easy to understand.
12:55I mean, when you're offensive line, you're signing guys off the street that are going off the street right into
12:59the starting lineup.
13:01That's not good.
13:02And again, I mean, that's – I don't know.
13:04I think there's got to be a big study done, and this is for another podcast, another time.
13:08But the way these teams practice with what's allowed in the CBA, with how these teams approach the preseason, and
13:18then the season starts, and it's like, wham.
13:20And these guys are just – they're not holding up.
13:23I don't know that these bodies are ready to start the year to get through healthy.
13:29So, it's a problem because we want to see the best against the best, and it's just not.
13:35The good, I think, Chicago.
13:37I think – so, let's stay in the division.
13:39I think Chicago and what they've done, they lost that crushing game at home to Minnesota.
13:43Then Case Keenum goes out and takes apart the Eagles the next week, and we got to watch that.
13:48And then, you know, they're good enough with Bajan against the Jets, and I think we're seeing just how good
13:57of a head coach and play caller Ben Johnson is.
14:00So, they're weathering the storm without their star quarterback who's on the cover of the Madden game, and they're going
14:07plowing straight forward.
14:09So, they're doing it with a ground game.
14:10I think we all – and I'm guilty of it, too.
14:13You think Ben Johnson, trick plays, gadget stuff, pass, pass, pass.
14:17He is a run-first guy, and they can withstand the injury to Caleb because they can run the ball.
14:24And with those two running backs – I know Swift's head and fumble – with those two running backs, they're
14:30a dangerous team.
14:31And I think Dennis Allen's got the defense playing really well.
14:34So, I – it's maybe a cop-out because I'm staying within the same division, but I'll throw Chicago on
14:40that list.
14:40I love that.
14:41And they're stealing team souls.
14:43You're 100% right.
14:44The way they're running the ball.
14:45And, listen, you and Troy have that right tone and demeanor with Case Keenum.
14:49It was appreciation and amazement in that game.
14:52Yeah.
14:52And it was terrific, wasn't it?
14:54I mean, that's why you love sports.
14:56That kind of performance from Case Keenum.
14:59And thoughtful answers before the game and thoughtful answers after the game.
15:03I mean, that's not his job.
15:04But it makes you love the guy.
15:07And we've covered some big games of his.
15:10We got to do the Minneapolis Miracle.
15:12And it was the first thing he said when he got on our chat.
15:15And, you know, he was very open about what he was trying to do and talking about being more of
15:21a coach player instead of a player coach.
15:23And his wife's okay with him going into coaching.
15:25And he's hugging his kids.
15:27And I don't know.
15:28It was a great story that night.
15:30And, oh, by the way, not to be Berman.
15:32But, and, oh, by the way, he played great.
15:35So there was a lot to celebrate that night.
15:39And it was fun to be there for sure.
15:41All right.
15:41Last one for you, Joe.
15:43Because all Yankees fans, myself included, we're feeling it today.
15:46And, obviously, you know, we've talked about this before.
15:49I miss Joe Buck as the soundtrack for Yankee baseball in October, October baseball in general.
15:55My all-time favorite Joe Buck Yankee call.
15:59This was my all-time favorite moment as a Yankee fan.
16:031996, the World Series, game number four, back at the track, at the wall.
16:09We are tied.
16:11We are tied.
16:12There it is, Joe.
16:13There it is.
16:14Larence off of Waller's.
16:16Because at that moment, I had never seen a championship.
16:18I knew the Yankee was going to win.
16:20And you had the right tone of that call.
16:22Well, I just remember.
16:24And then we go through that.
16:25Then Larence gets around the bases.
16:26And then Tim, like we've probably talked about this before.
16:28But Tim McCarver was so good with doing the pitch by pitch.
16:33And he'd go, you never get beat with your second best pitch.
16:36And it was fastball, foul ball, fastball, foul ball, fastball, slider, gone.
16:43And then it was just, you know, that was the beauty of it or whatever pitch he threw him.
16:48That was, everybody's like, what's your favorite?
16:51To be 27 and sitting in the Bronx before game one.
16:55And to be 27 and sitting in the Bronx for game six after the Braves took the first two games
17:01of that series on the road, that was like, wow.
17:06This is as big as broadcasting gets.
17:09This is as bright as the lights can shine.
17:14And that's right there.
17:16That's at the top of the list.
17:17You never forget your first.
17:19You can fill in the blank.
17:20First whatever.
17:21You never forget your first.
17:23And for my first to be in the Bronx and for them to win and their return to greatness, it
17:28was a gift.
17:30Joe, you're the best.
17:31We appreciate the time as always.
17:32Have fun on Monday night.
17:34And we'll do it again real soon.
17:35All right, buddy.
17:36Thanks, Adam.
17:36Appreciate it.
