00:00Guardians won the division, they get ready for the ALDS coming up on Saturday.
00:03They'll take on Chicago, the White Sox.
00:07The Cubs will not be in town.
00:09Cubs season is over, correct?
00:11Correct.
00:11Eliminated by the Padres last night.
00:14Correct.
00:14Also in about last night, do you have some special audio for John in about last night?
00:18Oh yeah, John thinks he's going to do something, but I'm going to derail it.
00:22Sensational, I can't wait for that.
00:24Guardians will welcome in the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.
00:27There was somebody who tweeted at us yesterday, who asked us to make a big deal if the White
00:34Sox win the series, to tell Guardians fans not to sell their tickets to White Sox fans.
00:40I'm like, well, it's a different series, different fan base.
00:43I don't see White Sox fans like Cubs fans.
00:46It's also the ALDS.
00:47It's the ALDS, it's not the World Series here.
00:50Now, on the flip side, I told you guys before the show that since 1918, this was only the
00:58second postseason where the White Sox had actually won a playoff series.
01:04That doesn't seem like it could be true, but I looked at it.
01:072005 would have been the last one I think I heard Jeff say.
01:10Yeah.
01:11I mean, that's it.
01:12It's outrageous.
01:13But, you know, for so many years, they didn't have these expanded playoffs.
01:16There was no wild cards.
01:17So, essentially, if you haven't won in the last 30 years all that often, then it was
01:25so much of a tougher road back in the day.
01:27Think of the Guardians slash Indians.
01:30How many years they just had no shot to even make the playoffs?
01:34I mean, from 40, 19, well, the 50s weren't that bad.
01:4054 they were in the world.
01:41Yeah, 54, and then like 58 and stuff like that, they were pretty good, and then things
01:47took a turn, and there was reasons behind it, which Art Modell actually had a hand in that,
01:52but people don't want to recognize that.
01:53Yeah, they went from 55, the Guardians, the Indians, went from 55 to 94, no playoffs.
01:59So, I mean, for a lot of people, that's a substantial portion of your life.
02:03Yeah.
02:03And so that's what was so shocking about the 90s run and why they sold out all those games.
02:10We always talk about the perfect storm.
02:11The football team leaves.
02:12It was the game in town.
02:14It was the biggest deal ever.
02:16Sports Talk Radio was dominated with baseball talk year-round.
02:22Do you think there's more pressure on the Guardians this year than there was last year?
02:25Yeah.
02:26Why?
02:27I think you're going to give the same answer as me.
02:28We're going to agree with each other.
02:29Which sucks for these young guys because they have nothing to do with that.
02:35But just that I'm already hearing it from some fans.
02:38Like, when they were celebrating, not so much a division, but when they were celebrating getting into the playoffs,
02:44even though it was a very subdued celebration, people are like, great.
02:48They make playoffs every year.
02:50What's the big deal?
02:50It's 8 of 11 years.
02:51What's the big deal?
02:52Like, show me you can win a World Series.
02:54What you just said was the reason why it's a big deal.
02:57And even by these measures and the new playoffs, and yeah, there's an extra playoff team and all that stuff.
03:03Like, it's not like the Mariners went 20 years.
03:06All right?
03:07So, that's why you celebrate getting into the postseason.
03:09They're in the postseason.
03:11So, if people just want to be downers about it and criticize about it, that's fine.
03:15That I'm upset about.
03:16Back then.
03:17Now we're a week after.
03:19If we're still upset about it, then I'm not going to be able to change your mind.
03:22I do think there is more pressure on this year's team, though.
03:25Because last year, like, when they came back from 15 and a half down and then they lost to the
03:29Tigers,
03:30the team they came back on, I just wasn't bothered by it because of the story of coming back from
03:3615 and a half down.
03:38I was like, well, obviously you're disappointed that your season's over, but I'm not bothered by it.
03:43I think fans may be bothered by this.
03:46Like, if they were to lose.
03:47I think that there's more pressure on them.
03:49You had a week off.
03:51You saw Chicago play the Houston Astros.
03:54You had some time to get Angel Martinez a little less banged up because, obviously, he's been playing banged up.
04:01Jose Ramirez in the handmade bone.
04:03You got him a five-day rest or so.
04:05Like, you have ways, reasons, why this team should not be worried about rust and should be just better in
04:13getting ready for the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.
04:15And should win the series against the Chicago White Sox.
04:18Not Saturday, but win the series against the Chicago White Sox coming up throughout the next week.
04:22But here is where they're a victim of their own success.
04:25The fact that 8 of 11 playoff appearances, whatever it is, 15 of 30, something along those lines.
04:31When that happens, I think there's a segment of the fan base that, while they love baseball, the regular season,
04:40they're not as dialed in because, like, we're going to make playoffs.
04:43And then when those people come playoff time, treat these games like they are life and death and like they
04:49are football games.
04:51And then you lose.
04:52And that's the only time that certain fans really rally around them like it is life or death.
04:59And then they lose.
05:00It's like, oh, this was the only time I really cared about them to that extent this year.
05:05And now they're already gone.
05:06They're eliminated.
05:07Like, there is a segment of the fan base in baseball especially that is like that.
05:12That just comes around?
05:13Yeah, that just comes around come playoff time.
05:15Yeah, but I mean, we see it.
05:16But I get annoyed by that.
05:17The game's sold out.
05:18The game's already sold out.
05:19How many solids did they have this year?
05:20Yeah, but I get annoyed by that because, like, I've been honest about it before.
05:23See, my problem with that level of thinking is this, is that if I'm not there in April and May,
05:29do I really get the right to complain about the team and lack of success, quote-unquote, if I'm not
05:36there in April and May, if I'm one of the people who pop in in August and September?
05:40I don't think I am.
05:42I don't think I get the right to do that.
05:43But they're still going to complain.
05:44I get that.
05:45I do think the casual baseball fan may outnumber the diehards.
05:50It has to because you see the TV ratings.
05:52The casual football fan.
05:53The casual everything outnumbers everything.
05:54But in football, the regular season games are appointment viewing.
05:58People have watched parties.
05:59There's only one a week.
06:00There's only one a week.
06:01In baseball, that does not happen until Saturday.
06:05But there's far.
06:06Other than opening day.
06:07Opening day is appointment viewing.
06:08Other than that, you get all these people that really have kind of had one foot in, one foot out.
06:13They've had their life.
06:13They've had all these other things going on.
06:16They pay attention to other things.
06:17But then Saturday, you've got a captive audience.
06:20And if you screw that up, if you have a managerial move, or you have a timely error, or a
06:26relief pitcher comes in,
06:27who might have been good all year.
06:29Cade Smith might have been unbelievable all year.
06:31He comes in and blows a playoff game when now all these people have magnified their attention.
06:37Yes, this is where the entire season is written in this next week.
06:43Well, to take a right turn, and I don't mean to do this, but you make me very defensive on
06:48that.
06:49Because I brought it before.
06:51When we were having our first kids and stuff like that, for whatever reason, I just wasn't as dialed in
06:56as I have been over these last five years.
06:58I've charted the games.
06:59I always want to count how many games I watch, and I want to get up over 110, 112, somewhere
07:05in there.
07:05Last year was a lot of baseball games.
07:07A lot of baseball games that I saw them play.
07:09And I don't think that if I'm on the air and I say very nasty things about the organization,
07:16if I only saw 40 games this year and I really wasn't around from opening day throughout August, September,
07:23I really don't think I get the right to be very critical of the organization.
07:26I do think I have the right to be critical of the organization here over the last five years.
07:30There's just not very many reasons to be critical of them.
07:33That's what bothers me.
07:34If we get to Saturday and something doesn't go our way, I don't care for the casual fan.
07:41And this is a little snobbish coming off, and I don't mean it to be this way, but I don't
07:45give a damn.
07:46I don't like to hear, this is why I don't whatever.
07:50This is why I don't go to the games.
07:52This is why I don't like baseball.
07:53Whatever.
07:54Like the stuff that you hear all the time.
07:56This is why I don't et cetera, et cetera.
07:59That's what bothers me.
08:00It's like, because, yeah, there's a lot of casuals that drop in.
08:04There's more casual football fans than there are baseball fans.
08:07The difference is the casual football fans think they know what they're looking at.
08:10Where baseball, it's like, I think they just assume they don't know what they're looking at,
08:13and it's baseball, and how hard could it be, quote unquote.
08:16It's like, no, it's a very hard game to play.
08:18And it's a game of streaks.
08:20It's a game of routine.
08:21That's what makes it beautiful for the people who love it.
08:23And I just think I'm going to be bothered if it goes in that direction.
08:27However, I will have to say, like, you've been fighting for the division the entire year.
08:32You've been neck and neck with this team the entire year.
08:35It would mean a lot to get over this team to get to the ALCS, and then you make do
08:40with what you have.
08:41Obviously, I agree with you.
08:42I mean, I think it would be huge.
08:43I just know how the argument plays out because I saw how the argument played out when they got into
08:48the playoffs.
08:49And I don't tweet much about baseball ever, but I tweeted something very positive.
08:54And I mean, without a doubt, 80% of the mentions were, haven't won a World Series since 48.
08:59Which is asinine to me.
09:01And I'm like, yeah, well, you can't win a World Series unless you get into the playoffs.
09:03But it didn't matter.
09:04I was getting shouted down by all these fans who are going to be there the minute they get eliminated.
09:09Well, to me, that's just ridiculous.
09:11I mean, we haven't won a Super Bowl since 1964.
09:14And we were wall-to-wall with the Browns earlier.
09:16And we'll be wall-to-wall with the Browns later on.
09:19Oh, that's a double standard.
09:21I just don't think that's right.
09:22Because why?
09:23Because the organization's well-organized?
09:25Because they're well-run?
09:26Because we do pay a manager that other teams clearly want?
09:30Like we talked about yesterday at the end of the show.
09:32We do pay that guy to make decisions.
09:34He actually does make decisions within the organization.
09:36He isn't just a button pusher like they are in other places.
09:38We are really good at identifying the double standard in this town with these teams.
09:42We are very bad at fixing the double standard.
09:44We should be in a position where we are just talking football and there is no baseball going on
09:51because of the youth that you have up here.
09:53Like I'm ready and raring to go.
09:55I'm hoping I'm ready and raring to go for a fight about David Blitzer soon enough
09:59that we get past this lockout conversation, that we move into baseball in 2027, 28, and 29,
10:05and then it becomes time to go, all right, are we going to pay Chase DeLauter?
10:09Okay, are we going to pay Travis Bazzana?
10:11All right, are we going to pay Angel Hanau?
10:13No, and Rafi Velasquez, I understand I'm being a little presumptuous on the other two or three
10:18or something like that.
10:19The first two, that's a serious conversation to have.
10:22Then I think I can get really nasty about it again.
10:25But I can't fault a well-organized baseball team doing what they can to get to the postseason
10:30and doing it the right way.
10:31The fact that we're even having this conversation will underscore how upset you're going to be
10:36when you know what the call is going to be the minute they're eliminated, if it's in this round.
10:42Because you get to the ALCS, that's a good year.
10:44I don't care what, just like I said, the Cavs, you get to the Eastern Conference Final, it's a good
10:47year.
10:47You get to that route.
10:49Even if you had a bye to get there, that's good.
10:51That's why you want to win the division.
10:52We're trying to make life easier on our team, not harder.
10:55But you know what the first call is going to be.
10:57I understand.
10:58I knew it.
10:58They didn't spend money.
10:59You're right.
11:00We're not good enough.
11:01You're right.
11:01This was fool's gold.
11:02AL Central, nobody really believed in this team.
11:05So that's why the pressure's on.
11:07That's why it feels to me like they got to win.
11:08But if it happens the day after, then fine, I take it as licking their wounds.
11:13But I don't think it's the truth overall.
11:15I think it's a very good team.
11:16There is pressure.
11:17It's a very good organization.
11:18There is pressure on them to win because of the history, because they have been successful.
11:22Any team that has success, it's the human nature to want more success.
11:26But I don't think we should be going and losing our minds.
11:28It's like you're kind of making them out to be the Bills where, yeah, you're on your ass
11:33for a long time.
11:34You finally get it going.
11:35You have a player that can take you and really in a position where there's very, very few
11:39of them anymore and it's still not enough.
11:41So you go and you make strong moves.
11:43I don't want that to turn into the Guardians here.
11:46One, because you can't afford those strong moves.
11:48Two, it's just patently untrue.
11:51It's patently unfair.
11:54Fair is not really a big deal, but untrue, that's the sticking point.
11:57Social media reaction brought to you by Scheiben Jewelers, Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
12:01Sean says there's more pressure because the field is wide open.
12:04They set themselves up for pitching matchups, home field advantage, which they carry if
12:08Tampa loses and then rests.
12:10This is exactly the scenario organization hopes to engineer every season.
12:14It really is.
12:15It's very good.
12:15This is an unbelievable opportunity this team has.
12:18And with their pitchers, remember, they've got their pitchers lined up.
12:21We had Castorvince on yesterday and he mentioned the same thing.
12:23They're pitch heavy.
12:24They're starting rotation heavy.
12:26You want that rest for them.
12:27The only negative I can think is that you gave an extra day of rest to Gavin Williams
12:31before and Gavin Williams notoriously doesn't like a whole lot of rest.
12:35So that might be, he might be a little bit sleepy when he goes, but earn that like you
12:39got what you wanted.
12:40You set this thing up the way you did, which also obviously sounds a lot like what we were
12:43saying about the Cavs during the run to the post season last year.
12:47But there's a lot of things that I just think are patently untrue about the way the organization
12:52is ran and I get very defensive of it because I have tuned in to well over a hundred plus
12:58games.
12:59I have tuned in to, to see the game during the swoon, during, during the good times,
13:03during the bad times.
13:04And I think a lot of fans who do the same thing feel the same way.
13:07I would, would I be disappointed?
13:10Yeah.
13:10I want them to go as far as I possibly can, but I don't find it in my heart in
13:15a game
13:15like baseball, unless they were to get to a world series in game seven again.
13:20And then I might be shooting my mouth off and angry if they lose.
13:23I just can't find myself in a position to be that mad because of the way the sport is.
13:30216-474-0092.
13:31And I understand that that's going to rub a lot of people the wrong way.
13:33Mary Kay Cab is going to join us at 822 this morning.
13:35How can Deshaun Watson and Casey Concepcion get on the same page?
13:39Can it start tonight against the Pittsburgh Steelers?
13:42Up next, 736 in the morning.
13:47I don't know.
13:47This is a breakfast dish, but John is about to have a little bit of crow coming up in five
13:52minutes and about last night on the fan.
