00:00After Jacob had wrestled with God and received the blessing, he continued on his journey with
00:04his family, servants, flocks, and possessions. As Jacob approached the land of Canaan,
00:11he saw his brother Esau coming toward him with 400 men. Jacob was afraid because many years
00:17earlier Esau had wanted to kill him after Jacob received their father Isaac's blessing. Jacob
00:22divided his family into groups and went ahead of them. He bowed down to the ground seven times as
00:29he approached his brother. But instead of attacking Jacob, Esau ran to meet him. He embraced his
00:35brother, threw his arms around him, and kissed him, and they both wept. Esau looked at the
00:41women and children with Jacob and asked who they were. Jacob introduced his family to his
00:47brother. Then Jacob presented the gifts he had sent ahead of him. Esau asked why he had
00:54sent all these gifts. Jacob told them that the gifts were meant to find favor in his sight.
01:00At first Esau refused, saying that he already had enough. But Jacob insisted, and Esau finally
01:07accepted them. Esau then offered to travel with Jacob and protect him. But Jacob explained
01:13that his children were young and his flocks and herds were fragile. He asked Esau to go
01:18ahead while Jacob traveled more slowly with his family. So Esau returned toward Seir, while Jacob
01:25continued his journey. Jacob eventually came to a place called Sikath. There he built a house for
01:32himself and shelters for his livestock. Afterward, Jacob traveled to the city of Shechem in the land
01:38of Canaan. He camped near the city and purchased a piece of land from the sons of Hamor, the father
01:44of
01:44Shechem. There Jacob built an altar and called upon the name of God. But while Jacob and his family were
01:50living near Shechem, something terrible happened. Dina, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, went out to
01:57visit the women of the land. Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivet, saw Dina. He took her and violated
02:04her. Afterward, Shechem became deeply attached to Dina and wanted to marry her. He asked his father
02:11Hamor to arrange the marriage. Hamor went to speak with Jacob and his sons. He asked them to allow
02:17Shechem to marry Dina and suggested that their families live together, intermarry and share the
02:23land. But Jacob's sons were deeply angry and grieved because of what had happened to their sister.
02:30They answered Hamor and Shechem deceitfully. They said they could not give their sister to a man who
02:35was uncircumcised. They told the men of Shechem that if every male in their city became circumcised,
02:41then the two peoples could live together, marry one another, and become one people.
02:47Hamor and Shechem agreed to their proposal. Shechem was so determined to have Dina that he
02:53persuaded the men of his city to accept the agreement. So every male in the city was circumcised.
03:00But three days later, while the men were still in pain and unable to defend themselves,
03:05two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, took their swords and attacked the city. They killed Hamor,
03:12Shechem, and every male in the city. Then Jacob's other sons came and plundered the city.
03:18They took the people's flocks, herds, wealth, children, and wives. When Jacob heard what his
03:25sons had done, he was greatly troubled. He told Simeon and Levi that they had brought danger upon him
03:32and his household. He feared that the surrounding peoples would hear what had happened and attack
03:37them. But Simeon and Levi answered their father, asking whether their sister should be treated like
03:42a prostitute.
