00:00morning brew right now on weei it's a great place to get your bruins fix morning bruh i like to
00:07say
00:07that's how you do it and morning bruh what's up morning bruh uh but we've got billy jaffe and
00:11razor raycroft on with us right now uh gentlemen how are we doing today
00:17what are you doing all right yeah you got us you got us in stereo you know the double calling
00:24that's right maybe careful i should address each one of you individually i probably before we do
00:29that that's probably the best way for a host to handle a double uh situation here uh let's start
00:35with you billy um just because you know you and i have a big background and you're very handsome
00:41uh let's talk about the look of this team after one game is there anything that you're seeing that
00:46makes you go all right this feels different than what we've had in the past uh well a little bit
00:54more skill uh not that victor arvidson who was there last year had skills a different kind it was
01:00more of an old school style um means getting to the front of the net scrappy type player and he
01:06scored
01:06but peterka does bring more skill there's no doubt about it frazier mint in a year older with that big
01:12goal the other night showing something too i think there's a little more skill and and i think a little
01:17bit more pace uh but obviously rich we're just one of 84 so far so long way to go to
01:24see if that
01:25translates from what i think it is to what it actually is but so far it's it's definitely a
01:30little more skill a little more pace in my eyes that's such a good question razor i'm asking you
01:34the same thing what do you know now about the bruins that you didn't a week ago that you liked
01:38what you
01:38saw oh well i like where their structure is at i think and i thought it looked pretty good in
01:46the
01:46in the preseason but from where they were a year ago with their defensive zone structure their
01:51neutral zone where everybody's supposed to go the the second year of marco sturm is going to start
01:56out a whole lot smoother uh especially for for the goaltenders uh and i think for the back end so
02:02even without charlie mcavoy they looked really solid looked really in place understood their
02:09assignments understood where they needed to go and they didn't spend a lot of time in their own zone so
02:13uh for me i just think where where the the organization where the team is and what
02:19marco sturm wants them to play is they're in a really good spot all right i'll bounce it back to
02:25to billy i'm just curious what you think expectations should be for morgan geeky 39 goals
02:30last year and uh it's came out hot do you what's what are what are you expecting to see from
02:35him this
02:36year billy well he's 30 plus i'd like i'd like to think 35 plus guy you know regularly ted
02:42um you know he's right now establishing himself in the bumper position on the power play which is
02:50different than seeing him on a flank with a heavy shot but that it doesn't mean he can't end up
02:54rotating to an elbow on the on the power player being there for for one of his one-timers but
03:00you know he's pretty good in front of the net too and and i i don't see why whether he's
03:06playing with
03:07pavel zaka you know in middle stat on the second line basically in essence taking arvidson spot or
03:13there might be times that he just goes back and works with with david i mean you you know like
03:18people get very wrapped up in the lines and the lines you know we might see five games that are
03:24over the lines are real good all of a sudden two games they don't work until marco and his staff
03:27are
03:27chasing you know changing them ted and guys and so but he could end up playing with boss again and
03:33if
03:33he does the good news about that is that they have i would think pretty much instant chemistry so
03:37i'm thinking i'm gonna get greedy i'm gonna say 35 plus again for for geeky uh so uh razors this
03:44team
03:44because watching game one are they faster or is it or am i just or is it just the youth
03:49movement that's
03:50out there and they just seem faster it just seems like a a higher pace like a faster paced team
03:55this
03:55year they want to be yeah and and they need to be i think we saw that in the playoffs
04:00when when they
04:01went up against buffalo that that they need to find more pace in their game and uh again i think
04:06that kind of goes to what i was speaking about earlier with the structure and where they where
04:09they need to go no one's thinking out there already out at the start of the season so if you're
04:14an nhl
04:14team and you're not thinking after a short training camp you're going to probably play faster than
04:19everyone else but then the additions of haggins and peterka those those two players alone will
04:26will add speed to your lineup so uh they certainly want to play faster they're going to need to play
04:32faster as the season goes on but i i think we saw that uh i i do i'd rather i
04:37want to see them get
04:38through this weekend and and really feel like they're fast especially going up against a team
04:43like minnesota tomorrow night that plays with a ton of pace billy i remember last year the start of
04:47the season when you guys launched the brew on saturdays 8 a.m which is a fabulous listen to start
04:52your weekend it is you you guys were talking about the secondary scoring where is it going to come from
04:56is that still an issue this year or do you because i actually look now and you kind of you
05:00could say
05:00six seven maybe eight 20 goal scores on this team if things go well oh well your uh your your
05:07your
05:07lips to the hockey god's ears ken that would be that would be tremendous razor and i would be maybe
05:13brewing something else instead of coffee early in the morning then if that was the case you know
05:17that would be great i mean sure um is it silicon i see i i think it when i say
05:23it's a concern i don't
05:25always a question though um you know you had some guys you know pavel zaka hit 30 can he do
05:31that
05:31again i'd like to think that he can but you know he's done it once in his career so now
05:36you know
05:36geeky's done it twice so now i consider him a 30 goal guy let's see pavel do that again can
05:41a guy
05:41um can a fraser mitten elevate to 20 plus can mark castellick who i think what was it 10 or
05:4812 last
05:49year can he get to 15 two or three more that type of thing i don't want to call it
05:53a concern but
05:54it's always a question mark i i know right now you've got the the kid line going how long do
05:59they
05:59stay together but you know you think that who's the dean of i think can contribute a little bit more
06:05i do think frazier can be 20 plus hagan's a lot of work in progress there guys again a lot
06:12of work
06:13in progress but to me this is a team it's like just like last year everybody's got to be doing
06:19the
06:19right thing you need to get phenomenal goaltending which so far it's one game this wayman was excellent
06:24i think one of the big questions is going to be their depth in net razor can speak to that
06:28better
06:28being a former nhl or in net uh with di pietro what does he do but overall from an offense
06:33perspective
06:34i still think we need to see guys elevate their numbers again and have quote unquote career years
06:39just like last year ken for this team to be battling for playoff spot uh razor uh you billy just
06:45mentioned you know james hagan's and just i'm just curious what what would you want to see what's
06:50what would you like to see from his game to start the season what what are you looking for to
06:56see
06:56out of i know he's young and he got in a little bit at the end last year but what
07:00are realistic kind
07:01of goals uh that james hagan should have well i want him to play with confidence and and not have
07:07any hesitancy he did that in the preseason i didn't think he did that as well in game one i
07:14thought he
07:14made a couple of plays where he was thinking a little bit too much and not just driving um and
07:19then and i'd like to see him score sooner than later i think he considers himself a goal scorer
07:25or point getter uh he has of course his whole life uh and you know the he was considered the
07:31first overall pick for a long period of time the best player at his age group for most of his
07:36entire
07:37life so i think earlier he can score here and get on the board i think that will go a
07:43long way for
07:43his confidence but he's got to play responsible like he did last year but then also find ways to
07:48get creative on the offensive zone and it's a balance for a young guy in this league especially
07:52with a team like the bruins who who rely on responsibility um in a 200 foot game but
08:00he he has all the tools he did a great job in the preseason and and he's got a big
08:04weekend here to
08:05get back going in that direction all right we're talking to billy jaffe and andrew raycroft you can hear
08:10them saturday mornings at 8 a.m right here on weei and morning brew uh billy uh what is what
08:16is
08:16char's role with this team because i mean obviously he's the type of guy that you absolutely i mean the
08:21bruins were smart to keep him around these guys but i don't even know what exactly he does do you
08:27know
08:27what it would like what he on a daily basis does with this team um well he's a i don't
08:34remember the
08:35exact title for forgetting but basically he's a big time advisor for this team and in management
08:42and you know the other day he was at practice and and he can be seen watching up there talking
08:48to
08:48whether it's to don sweeney or let's say uh there's a scout or another exec there and then he's down
08:54in
08:54the locker room at times too so uh for lack of again the exact title knowledge i would call big
09:00time
09:00important advisor with a lot of freaking experience that can help the team out um he just goes and
09:07stares at players who are complaining about injuries and just like you're not injured you get out and
09:11play you're not injured yeah um i would say that that well it probably wouldn't hurt um he's a listen
09:19he's a guy that just he can talk about so many different experiences and i think now that that he
09:25is
09:25you know committed to doing this it comes off it's not just that well let me see what it's like
09:30type of thing richard yeah i'm committed to it and and having a guy like that around who
09:36you know played the game in a different way he was obviously so unique given his size right
09:42but also thought the game differently and and just approach his wife differently and that's what made
09:48him such a great cap uh captain now that he's there that's his i think it's his role is just
09:54to
09:54kind of spread that hockey knowledge that he has and i'm i'm sure i you know i'd love to ask
10:00him
10:00this too but i'm sure it's a different feel for him not being in the locker room every day right
10:04but
10:04now coming in as somebody just to help out and i you know there's a got to be a different
10:10delivery
10:10and there's got to be a different way that he looks to get the message true so i think it's
10:15you
10:15know it's fantastic for him to be around i'm sure you've heard the stories about when players would
10:20show up like whether they would just get traded mid-season or something he had bought those uh
10:24condos that were over by the the wharf over there and he would just like let him stay in the
10:29condos
10:30until they were able to all get settled and then apparently uh sean thornton the sean father used to
10:35get them all like car endorsements and deals and stuff like it was kind of a cool thing that they
10:39had
10:40going but i mean char just it just he just seems like the perfect kind of guy whose dna you
10:46want to
10:46want to keep around the bruins because you know you want to have that that toughness you know and
10:52i'm kind of half joking when i'm saying he's going probably going to go up to players who are like
10:55a
10:55little injured just go you're not injured you keep going it just that's a good thing to have around
10:59the team well it's presence and again you know razor can speak to it real well he's a different
11:05president than any cat any player in the nhl before just given his physical stature like that too so
11:11yeah to have him around and and and to be able to share all of the things that that he
11:16knows feels
11:17and then just experienced right uh i think it's pretty cool all right now razor before we let you
11:22go of course you're a noted bills fan being from the toronto region so uh and i know you don't
11:29love
11:29we there's not enough football talk on sports radio in in new england but do you have any thoughts
11:34going into the big first match up here this weekend what do you think my thoughts are right now
11:40well honestly as the bills again as a built down i'm actually quite nervous because this is exactly
11:46the spot this weekend where drake may wakes up everything goes the patriots way and they win 24 20
11:54and and josh allen gets hurt like that this is kind of how it goes as bills fans but uh
11:59no we're
12:00there there's a lot of expectation in bills mafia to put a to put a beat down on but but
12:07again
12:08where it's always in the back of everyone's head that this could easily be the spot drake may
12:12shows up and be becomes an mvp again you see everyone on wei isn't pessimistic about this
12:18patriots team there you go yeah these are picking the win i think what i heard i'll take it i'll
12:22take
12:22it all right well billy jeffy uh razor raycroft you can hear them at 8 a.m right here on
12:27wei we're
12:28lucky to have them at eight o'clock on saturdays appreciate it guys it's been good talking to you this
12:33season love it guys
