Is it time for Michigan to make a change at QB?
Transcript
00:00I got a little bit on hockey, a little bit on hoops, plenty on college football in the NFL.
00:04It's the overreact, Jims.
00:06Do you believe?
00:08It should be Tommy Carr time in Ann Arbor.
00:11Bryce Underwood, all of 101 passing yards, two picks, and on the final play, doesn't
00:15see the tight end wide open for the first.
00:17He says, nah, let me throw it in the stands.
00:19Don't even give my team a chance to make a play.
00:21Now is the time.
00:22You go to the bye week, you get your quarterback up to speed, you get a game under your belt
00:26before Indiana.
00:27This team is not making the playoff.
00:29Get a jump on the future.
00:31Start Tommy Carr.
00:32Oh, I thought it was Tommy Carr time sometime in the third quarter.
00:35And you have back-to-back passes that are interceptions.
00:38Now all of a sudden, you still have a chance to win the game if you can just have some
00:42semblance of offense.
00:43And it doesn't mean that Bryce's time has to be done.
00:46But there can be, I said this after the Western game, I'm doing a hit on a different show.
00:51Sometimes there's a benefit of sitting on the sidelines and watching everything and
00:57learning from that.
00:58Bryce has never had that.
01:00And it could be very valuable for his development to see things at game speed, but actually
01:04sit there and learn a little bit and then have to earn that spot back.
01:09All right.
01:09This is not an overreaction.
01:11John nailed it.
01:12It should have happened after the second interception.
01:13Consecutive interceptions is a perfect reason to say, look, you weren't losing us the game
01:19up to that point, but now you're going to lose us the game.
01:22I'm going to throw him in, try to energize this offense, see what this offense looks like
01:27with a potential better passing quarterback.
01:30And if he wins the game and he does the job, you might just swing your season going into
01:36the bye.
01:37You're jackass.
01:39Kyle Whittingham's hire was a mistake.
01:43Nothing that was advertised.
01:44They haven't lost to Minnesota since Brady Hoke was the coach.
01:47They haven't lost there since 1977.
01:49Has the greatest day of PJ Flex life outside of what marriage and kids.
01:55Whittingham dismantled the downhill run game for this East and West BS.
01:58He hasn't unlocked his quarterback.
02:00You're not getting the toughness and discipline that was promised.
02:03This was a mistake.
02:05I think it all goes back to what was the goal?
02:08What was the goal of hiring coach Whittingham?
02:11Was it to run a clean program?
02:13They might have accomplished that, but you're not getting wins.
02:16Was it the best gamble by an embattled athletic director?
02:19Was it the safe hire versus the right hire?
02:22Like, I just like, what was the goal?
02:25I don't know that this is an overreaction.
02:27I think it is for right now.
02:29And you got to remember the timing.
02:31The coaching cycle had kind of been gone through already.
02:34What was out there?
02:36Now, here's the deal, though.
02:37You've got to move on quick if you don't think he's the guy.
02:41Like, this is where the Monte Williams thing comes in.
02:44Buyouts, $24 million, I think I saw.
02:46What was Monte Williams' buyout?
02:48And who's making this hire?
02:49You don't have an athletic director.
02:50Well, you don't have an athletic director when you're going to be making this,
02:53unless they hire somebody by then who's going to evaluate this and make that change.
02:58But you also have a transition of presidents.
03:02Like, where's the decision coming from?
03:04That's why you probably, there's no world where he's not the coach next year.
03:08You're the slob.
03:09You're the gross one.
03:11Speaking of who's in charge and poor leadership, the Red Wings.
03:14This is the lowest point in the now 101-year history of this franchise.
03:20You have fans chanting, sell the team on national TV.
03:24Fans are trolling the organization with Simon Edvinson signs.
03:27You can't sign the players that want to be here, and you can't trade the players who want out.
03:31You ran a sham of a GM search.
03:33A hundred names my ass.
03:35Tell your fans you're not going to rebuild with one of the worst rosters in the sport.
03:38This is the low point for the winged wheel.
03:40Well, it's the low point in my lifetime, but I'm not going to go past that.
03:47I know we have the dead wing era.
03:49They have to give away cars, and this is worse.
03:51Well, I think it's safe to say it's the worst four-month period, five-month period in the history of
03:57this organization.
03:58Maybe the worst four- or five-month period in the history of Detroit sports, where you don't make a
04:03change with the GM until, what, two months after the season?
04:06Because you're doing some grand evaluation, and that's the decision that you come to.
04:11And then after you do that, you don't have a name to turn to to be able to hire somebody
04:17that can come in and solve the Larkin issue, get a contract to Simon Edvinson that seems like a no
04:25-brainer.
04:25Now it's being reported that he would prefer.
04:27He didn't demand a trade.
04:28He would prefer not to be in Detroit.
04:31Like, what are we doing?
04:34All right, this is not an overreaction.
04:35I do have some memories of the dead wing era.
04:38We didn't.
04:38It was young, okay?
04:40I didn't get it all.
04:41Well, the car thing, first off, that always gets thrown out there.
04:43It's, oh, they have to give away cars to get people to games.
04:45A lot of professional franchises in that day that weren't that good were doing the same thing.
04:50It wasn't like they were the only ones.
04:51But this is the lowest point, unless tomorrow is.
04:54There's a new low every day.
04:55That's the thing.
04:56It's just stunning what's happened since the Iserman firing and the incompetence and the lack of anybody addressing it, really.
05:05Mm-hmm.
05:07Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
05:10I might lose some people with this one.
05:12The Jalen Duren contract is the worst in Pistons history.
05:17At least when they maxed Drummond or signed Josh Smith or made the disastrous duo of Charlie V and Ben
05:23Gordon, highly paid Pistons, they weren't wasting a title window with Kate Cunningham.
05:28That is why this is the worst contract they've ever had.
05:32So, not losing me on this one, and a lot of it is semantics.
05:38We'll see.
05:39This could age as the worst contract in Pistons history.
05:43I don't know that it is right now because they didn't max him.
05:46They maxed Drummond.
05:47And then they had to find a way to move on from him.
05:49By the way, when they traded Drummond, they got all of a second-round pick back.
05:52Right, and so you're paying a guy for what he's going to do.
05:56I don't think this is going to age well, but until I see that, I can't say that this is
06:01the worst because they didn't come out and max him.
06:03They could have and didn't.
06:05Yeah, that's an overreaction for now.
06:07Look, he, with this contract, is still the 43rd highest paid player in the NBA right now.
06:13Relatively speaking, I think the numbers pop out.
06:16We're not used to it yet in the NBA because the Pistons just got good.
06:18I will say, I can't get away from Josh Smith, I can't get away from Ben Gordon, and I'll even
06:24go back, for the older listeners, Bison Daly.
06:26Okay, it's a good poll.
06:28My point is, the stakes are so much higher now than with those moves.
06:32They won 60 games with them with the stakes being high.
06:34Can you win a title with him as your second highest paid player?
06:39Probably not.
06:40Okay.
06:43Detroit basketball.
06:45The Philadelphia Eagles will miss the playoffs.
06:49Oh, of 12 on third down, the worst day in the history of Eagles football.
06:54Their offense is busted and broken.
06:56Saquon Barkley's hurt.
06:57Their offensive line is nowhere near what it was even just a year or two ago.
07:01John, this team's missing the playoffs.
07:02I think at this point, it's still an overreaction because of the division that they're in.
07:07Now, is Dallas going to be the team that wins that?
07:09I mean, the Giants right now are 3-1, but it's with Jameis Winston.
07:15How reliable is that?
07:17And if they turn to 9, who's 18, I don't think there's anything there.
07:23So I think it's somewhat a division where they can still win the division and get in.
07:30But I think that's their only path.
07:31Yeah, I think it's an overreaction.
07:32I mean, I would ask, why come the Lions question isn't in here?
07:35The Lions will miss the playoffs.
07:36I would pick the Eagles to make it before the Lions.
07:39They have a track record.
07:40They have a locker room.
07:41They have a coach that's done it.
07:42I will say this.
07:43I do think we are at the fork in the road for Sirianni because I think the standard in Philly
07:49is higher than it is here.
07:51These guys were both hired in the same hiring cycle, and you got this guy starting to get
07:55on the hot seat, but our guy isn't, who hasn't even made it to a Super Bowl, let alone
07:59made two and won one.
08:02We're both trying to pull and tug at it.
08:08Ben Johnson will win coach of the year.
08:11They have three wins, all by double digits, all with a different quarterback.
08:16The Bears and Ben Johnson are going to have a big year, and he will win coach of the year.
08:20At this point, I think it's still an overreaction.
08:23I'm going to go with Clint Kubiak, who is coaching the Raiders.
08:26That were awful.
08:27No one gave him a chance.
08:28They started off 3-0, and you could say, well, okay, it was Dolphins, and we found out a
08:32little bit more about the Chargers, they did beat the Saints, and they were neck and
08:36neck with what we believe may be the class of the NFL in the Chiefs, and they had multiple
08:41opportunities to win that game.
08:43If they end up making the playoffs, I think you're going to go with Clint Kubiak.
08:49Yeah, this is an overreaction because of the other guys that are out there.
08:52This is no disrespect to Ben Johnson because he should be absolutely applauded for winning
08:56three straight weeks with three different quarterbacks.
08:58Look, Monken and Kubiak right now have to be in consideration for having their teams
09:03three and one, just like Ben Johnson is, and Johnson's going to lose this because of
09:08what he did last year when he couldn't win coach of the year because of what Mike Vrabel
09:12did.
09:12I'll say this, though, right now, man.
09:15Look, I was a little bit of a critic of Ben Johnson.
09:17I think our show has been to a degree, and right now, I'm not quite sure he's not a better
09:23coach than Dan Campbell.
09:24So, the Chiefs are back as the class of the NFL.
09:30This is the best team I'm seeing this season.
09:32They are 4-0.
09:33The Kenneth Walker edition is just what the doctor ordered, and they can put teams away.
09:40Yes, not an overreaction.
09:42I think the way that they played through four games.
09:44Now, again, we'll go back to that Raiders game, and there were some things that happened
09:48at the end of that game.
09:49And whether it was a bad snap, whether it was, you know, hey, Patrick Mahomes' eyes
09:54downfield, like, they did what they had to do to win that game.
09:59And I think they continue to work things out.
10:03But I think maybe the best offseason signing is Kenneth Walker.
10:08Yes.
10:08Knowing that your quarterback is banged up.
10:10So, you go out there and do something that you believe is an absolute need, and pay him
10:16maybe more than you want to pay a running back, but it's paying off right now.
10:19Yeah, that's not an overreaction, and you picked him to win it all, didn't you?
10:21I did.
10:22Yeah.
10:22So, you know, for all the crap you're taking today, you're not always wrong.
10:26Thanks, Tom.
10:28I will say, you know, Kenneth Walker's just been dynamite.
10:31He scored two touchdowns in 19 seconds yesterday.
10:33I'll ask, who would you pick to beat him right now?
10:37I might pick Seattle if they played each other.
10:40Right.
10:40I think their defense could grind out a win.
10:43Could be ugly, yeah.
10:45Do me.
10:46Well, now I feel bad, because Tom tried to be nice to me, and this is not a very nice
10:49thing to say to him.
10:51Texan Tom.
10:52Actually, this is nice.
10:53I want to help you.
10:54Texan Tom needs to rebrand to Texas Tom.
10:58Get you on the Cowboys bandwagon.
10:59Your Texans are 0-4, and the Cowboys are a much better ship for you to be on right
11:04now.
11:04I'm going to say, I'm out.
11:07I don't care.
11:08And I'll let Tom address this.
11:10All right.
11:10So, this is not an overreaction.
11:12The Texans defense just isn't playing up to their talent level.
11:15It looks like they read the preseason headlines, and D'Amico Ryan's kind of called him out
11:21yesterday.
11:21We got to be better than this.
11:22I mean, there's too much talent here to not perform better.
11:26But I'm not becoming Texas Tom, and the Cowboys defense, which is atrocious, too.
11:31They've given up 112 points this year.
11:33They're not far off from the Lions.
11:34They're the second worst in third down defense after the Lions.
11:38Yeah, but at least they made a bold move to try and make it better.
11:40Yeah.
11:40So, I'm going to move to a different team that seems to win when they don't even need
11:43to score touchdowns.
11:44Oh, no.
11:45Minnesota Millican.
11:47Oh, no.
11:48Oh, wow.
11:49Oh, you and Kyler Murray.
11:51Who cares about him?
11:53A little man love?
11:53Oh, they've got their four last three games.
11:57They've scored two touchdowns and have 11 field goals, and they've won them all.
12:01Now, I'm picturing him with, like, Viking headgear back there.
12:04Can I do the pregame ceremony thing?
12:07Oh, the Matterhorn?
12:08Yes.
12:09We're not getting a show Matterhorn.
12:11That's too far.
12:12Those are your overreact, Jims.
12:1497-1.
12:1697-1.
