Is it time for Michigan to move on from OC Jason Beck?
Transcript
00:00Got some college football takeaways and some thoughts on the NFL.
00:04It's the overreact gyms, kidneys, testicles, all that stuff.
00:09Yeah, pretty much.
00:13I don't know what you're laughing about.
00:15Michigan should fire Jason Beck like today.
00:18They need to announce that he's no longer employed at the university.
00:21You cannot blame Bryce Underwood anymore.
00:24Michigan's offense hasn't been this bad since Rich Rod year one points per game.
00:29They have no run game.
00:30The outside runs that they are stubbornly committed to are a disaster, as is this whole Rhino thing.
00:36The third down play action from the one, the one chance they had to actually score a touchdown,
00:41even Whittingham can't defend it.
00:43Oregon fired their OC yesterday.
00:45Michigan needs to do the same.
00:46The fact they wasted that defensive performance is unacceptable.
00:50It would not be an overreaction if this happened.
00:55I think the moment has passed.
00:57If you're going to do it, you're going to do it.
00:58Like Oregon did.
01:00But you have to be able to inherit a certain talent and skill set by your offensive line,
01:10by your running backs, by your quarterbacks.
01:12And if you refuse to call plays that they are good at, then I don't know what you're doing.
01:21I really don't.
01:23This is not an overreaction, but they're not going to do it.
01:26It should happen.
01:28It won't happen.
01:29They've scored 107 points in the six games, not counting the UTEP game.
01:35Right.
01:36That's like 17 points a game.
01:38That's horrendous.
01:39Them and Michigan State have like the two worst offenses in the Big Ten.
01:42It's pathetic.
01:43Greg, before country.
01:44Before we move on, credit to Brendan Shabath, who you hear on the updates locally here.
01:48Michigan drives that didn't start with a defensive turnover over the last three games.
01:53I'm not going to read it.
01:54It's punt, punt, punt, interception, interception, punt, punt, punt, downs.
01:56It's all of that.
01:57It's nothing.
01:58Yeah.
01:59Nothing.
01:59They've generated nothing unless it's off a turnover through three games.
02:02I mean, I have to see the full package.
02:06Malachi Tony will win the Heisman Trophy.
02:09Everybody's focused on the wrong receiver.
02:11Jeremiah Smith is without quarterback now.
02:15He's not going to have the same advantage that Tony is to stack up numbers.
02:20Malachi Tony became the first player on a 7-0 team since Devontae Smith to have this many yards and
02:26this many touchdowns.
02:27Smith would go on to win the Heisman Trophy.
02:33I think it's still an overreaction.
02:36And you're just looking at if somebody from Miami is going to win it, it's going to be Darian Mensah,
02:42not Malachi Tony.
02:44And if it's a receiver, I think there's still a chance, and it may even be more so Jeremiah Smith,
02:50because if he still goes out there and is able to produce numbers, he's doing it with a freshman quarterback.
02:55Like, if you're a freshman quarterback, would you rather have Malachi Tony to be able to throw the ball to
02:59or Jeremiah Smith?
03:01Yeah, this is an overreaction.
03:03Mensah and Tony are going to cannibalize each other because the Heisman voting is regional.
03:08And what John said about the Ohio State quarterback change, if Smith looks like three-quarters of what he is,
03:15I think he's going to run away with it.
03:17Yeah, and you also look at the teams that they've played.
03:20Look at the defenses that they've played.
03:22I mean, putting up 52 on Central Michigan, like, everyone does that.
03:26But I'm with the Mafia.
03:27How dare you?
03:29Cheap shot.
03:30Luke Fickle has saved his job.
03:33He was on the hottest of hot seats coming into the year.
03:36They just beat USC.
03:37They also have a Penn State win.
03:39I don't know how much cachet that holds anymore.
03:41But look at their schedule.
03:43They'll play Rutgers, Purdue, and Maryland.
03:44This is an 8-to-even-10-win football team in Madison.
03:48Not an overreaction.
03:50And, I mean, the finish will matter.
03:53But he just had the best win he's had at Wisconsin.
03:57This was a No. 16 USC team.
04:00You're talking about a potential Heisman candidate no longer at the quarterback position.
04:06And so, yeah, I think he's completely saved his job.
04:09Yeah, not an overreaction.
04:105-2 overall.
04:113-1 in the Big Ten.
04:13He hung with Notre Dame early in the first half of that game, at least.
04:17I think he's definitely staying.
04:19They hung with UCLA, too, by the way.
04:20It was only a 10-point loss.
04:22Mmm!
04:23The New York football Giants will win the NFC East.
04:28Maybe by default.
04:29But credit to them for an OT win yesterday.
04:32And J.J. McCarthy doesn't look terrible.
04:35Giants are 4-2-1.
04:36They already beat the Cowboys straight up.
04:38That's a feather in their cap.
04:39They're going to win this division.
04:41An overreaction at this point.
04:43Now, if we do this tomorrow, I may say something different because the Cowboys and Eagles play tonight.
04:49If the Cowboys win that game, I think the Cowboys have the most talent to be able to recover.
04:56And, yes, I know the Giants beat the Cowboys if only they played and only if it was televised, blah,
05:01blah, blah.
05:01But I think that they just have a better chance versus whatever they've got going on with New York right
05:10now.
05:11And I know, hey, 9 was that quarterback, and he played well.
05:15It's one game.
05:16I'm not sitting there and saying, well, he's fixed, and he's going to be a great quarterback.
05:20Jack, it's not an overreaction.
05:26I can't buy J.J. yet, first off.
05:28The Texans' D certainly isn't what we thought it was coming into this year.
05:32Look, they've got two games against the Eagles still, who still have a defense.
05:37So what can they dial up against J.J.?
05:39They also have games against San Francisco, Seattle, and Jacksonville.
05:44I'm not handing it over to them yet.
05:49By the way, it's not an overreact, Jim, but you just jogged my memory.
05:53Did you see they put Notre Dame ahead of BYU in the AP?
05:57Speaking of teams that played each other and it was televised.
05:59Well, yeah, and a bear at BYU is no longer in the Heisman running.
06:04Womp, womp, womp.
06:06Even though he beat Notre Dame.
06:06Big 12 sucks.
06:10My next overreact, Jim.
06:12Deshaun Watson deserves MVP votes.
06:14Yes, the Browns are in first place.
06:17I'll repeat, on Halloween, the Browns will be in first place.
06:21They have five wins.
06:23All are five game-winning drives by Deshaun Watson.
06:27How many touchdowns did he throw yesterday?
06:29None.
06:30He ran a touchdown and he threw for 300 yards.
06:32And he threw an interception.
06:33I'm not going to sit here.
06:35Overreaction.
06:36Are you kidding me?
06:37How are the Browns good?
06:40Because you're not going to get an MVP vote for Deshaun Watson.
06:44He has not been spectacular.
06:46He's been good enough.
06:47He's got eight touchdowns, two picks.
06:50Deshaun Watson?
06:50Yeah.
06:51Hold on a second here.
06:52I think you're wrong.
06:53Seven passing, one rushing, only two picks.
06:56Maybe it's a third pick after yesterday.
06:59No.
06:59He has, yeah, seven touchdowns.
07:02Eight with a rushing.
07:03He has thrown for seven touchdowns.
07:05And he has thrown three interceptions.
07:07Yes, he did run for one.
07:08Yes, that is part of playing quarterback.
07:10This is the reason this segment is created.
07:11It's called overreactions.
07:13You're overreacting to him playing good, not great.
07:16He hasn't been great.
07:17His QB rating is 90.
07:19Wouldn't you agree, Jim, that if you're going to be an MVP as a quarterback, your rating should
07:22be over 100?
07:23I agree.
07:23The only thing you're missing is it's the Browns.
07:25They're not supposed to be good.
07:27And if somebody wins an award, it's Todd Munkin for coach of the year.
07:30Bingo.
07:31And good for Deshaun Watson for him when everybody thought he was going to go on the road the
07:36first two games, lose them both, and get benched for Sanders.
07:39He stood up to that.
07:40He's playing good game-managing football, but he's not MVP.
07:45No.
07:46I said votes.
07:46No.
07:47Comeback player of the year?
07:51Do me.
07:55Aaron Glenn is going to have lots of time to spend with family around the holidays.
08:00Because his ass is getting fired.
08:02You lost to the Dolphins?
08:04Their buy is December 6th, which means plenty of time to get Christmas shopping done and
08:08festivities and chestnuts over the open fire.
08:12They will hire a new coach to pair with their new quarterback next season.
08:16I don't doubt that he is relieved of duty.
08:20I think it's not going to happen before the holidays.
08:24If it happens, it'll be one of the last games of the year.
08:26They'll move on.
08:27It'll be after the holidays, or they'll move on after the season.
08:31I think this is still an overreaction.
08:32I think it's an overreaction, too, because of the timing.
08:35I would not be surprised at all if he's gone after the season.
08:37There's still three games on the schedule after Christmas, the way the schedule's set
08:41up this year.
08:43Look, you can't really endorse him.
08:44I will say this.
08:45I wasn't too surprised yesterday.
08:47It's a divisional game.
08:49Teams are built to beat divisional teams.
08:53But it's really hard to stick up for them at this point.
08:56He's doing the windmill.
08:57He's whipping it.
08:57He's having a good time.
08:58I'm Jackson Smith and Jigba is going to break Calvin Johnson's single season receiving
09:04yards record.
09:05And someone's bound to do it with the extra game, but he is going to shatter it.
09:09He's on pace for 2,100 yards.
09:11He has by far the highest target share of anybody in football.
09:14So he just gets the ball thrown to him a ton, and he makes you pay.
09:18Not an overreaction at this point.
09:20He may actually do it in 16 games.
09:22He's on pace to do it in 16 games.
09:25Now, the only drawback is Sam Darnold has kind of turned back into the pumpkin.
09:30Can he continue to deliver?
09:31He's done it so far.
09:33So I don't think it's an overreaction at this point.
09:35Four of every 10 throws go to him.
09:37It's the highest rate in football.
09:38He just can't be guarded.
09:40No.
09:41If Smith and Jigba had a Pro Bowl quarterback, he might break Jerry Rice's touchdown record
09:46in season.
09:47Yeah.
09:47Or now I think it's actually Randy Moss is at 23.
09:50He probably won't do that because of his quarterback.
09:52I don't think there's an overreaction.
09:53I do think Smith and Jigba will break Calvin's record.
09:57And the thing right now with the extra game, Smith and Jigba is on pace for 123.8 per game.
10:03Calvin's 122.75.
10:05He's outpacing Calvin, so the extra game doesn't matter right now.
10:09And he's got some easy games on the schedule coming up.
10:12Dallas, Carolina, Vegas, and Arizona.
10:18Those are your overreactions.
10:1997.1.
