00:01talking Wolverines Broncos that ending and all of the big stories from
00:05college football's opening weekend. Greg Hargrave takes us on campus.
00:34Lots of vibes checks this week. We're going to be checking in as we go around the country.
00:40We're going to start in Ann Arbor. Michigan's poor play against Western Michigan needs no
00:44introduction. What was most concerning to you? Mine was the play of the offensive line.
00:50If you're playing an undersized defensive front, and I know trying to block movement can be tough
00:55at times, and it takes a little bit of adjustment, but you rely on your technique. Technique faltered.
01:02They didn't have it. They never got from the first level where you're trying to get movement. You've
01:09got an extra one in there because you're not playing with a tight end. You're playing with
01:12an extra offensive lineman. You've got to get movement at the point of attack and then get
01:18off on the linebackers. They didn't touch a linebacker all day. To me, that is the biggest
01:25issue because if you're trying to get confidence in your young quarterback, I know they did that
01:30early with some quick passes. We can talk more about that. Play five. Should have been picked
01:36off by the linebacker. Anyway, you are trying to get some yardage on the ground. You've got
01:43an all-world running back in Savion Hyder. You've got the experience in Captain Jordan Marshall.
01:50Get the ground game going and create some confidence in your offense. The offensive line
01:56did not allow for any of that. Honorable mention to too many penalties, illegal procedure, 12
02:03guys on the field in the fourth quarter, but to me, the most concerning was Bryce Underwood
02:07not developing. This is his second season. He's staring down receivers. He's got sloppy footwork.
02:13He had two turnovers, could have had two others. He's not lifting them up. This was the number
02:17one recruit in America. Haven't seen a quarterback like Bryce. Oh, I've seen plenty. That's the
02:22problem. 60% of their drives were four plays or less. That goes back to the field general
02:27not being grown up and ready in his second season. My very first early impression of Michigan
02:33was this just seems to be a reinvented Michigan. They were spreading out the defense horizontally,
02:39using those quick passes, not worried that we have to establish the run because that's what
02:46Michigan does. They weren't attached to Michigan's past and we saw them score touchdown on an opening
02:51drive and then they just stopped doing that. Yeah. After all the controversy and despite all
03:00the moral shoulds of talking heads, Western Michigan is oh and one after having a 99.9% chance
03:07of upsetting Michigan. What could the Broncos have done differently? Play a 60 minute and one second
03:13football game. No, in all seriousness, they got too cute on their final possession, that third down,
03:18that snap that turned into a fumble. If they just keep going downhill, they had Michigan on their heels
03:22in that second half. They got too cute. They had to settle for a field goal. They left the door
03:26open.
03:27So I'm glad you went there because that's initially where I was going to go. And then on the first
03:32Hail Mary, you knew that the ball was going out of bounds. Don't don't catch it. Don't touch it.
03:38Don't do anything at that point. Just let the ball clear the end zone. The clock doesn't stop until it
03:44hits the ground. And we're not talking about, I mean, wouldn't think we're talking about an extra
03:51second or a replay. You know, I go back to that last fourth and four, fourth and five with 38
03:57seconds
03:58left. And this is the dichotomy of your defense is playing well. I consider that they would go for it
04:04and end the game there. I understand why they didn't. Right. Why changing the lead from two up
04:10to five is valuable. Make them score a touchdown. But I was thinking, man, do you go for it and
04:15end
04:15the game there? Let's check out on East Lansing. Michigan State beat Toledo 30 to 20 on Friday
04:21night. But MSU did trail early in the fourth quarter. Are there good vibes or bad vibes after
04:27game one in East Lansing? I think good vibes. There should be good vibes. And here's why they did get
04:32down in the fourth quarter. But as we've seen Michigan State teams in the past, that they
04:37crumble. They didn't crumble under Pat Fitzgerald. They kept fighting. They kept going for it. And
04:42just like you brought up the penalties and the turnovers for Michigan, four penalties. You're
04:49going to have some in the first game. Four is not a crooked number. No turnovers. They gave
04:55themselves every opportunity to win that game. And ultimately they did. Good vibes. Flashes of the
05:00identity they want to be. Tough, hard running. And yeah, I'd circle no turnovers, only four
05:04penalties. A couple busts led to the explosives, but you saw who they want to be. And I think
05:08that's a success for Fitzgerald.
05:10Malachi Tony towards Stanford for 12 catches, 234 yards, three touchdowns. I feel dumb that
05:16we didn't include him in our Dark Horse Heisman candidates. Jeremiah Smith had eight catches
05:20for 151 yards and two touchdowns in one half against Ball State. Who will win the Belitnikoff
05:26award as the nation's best pass catcher? And feel free to freelance here and nominate
05:29someone other than these two. It feels like a two horse race. Tony with the yak yards
05:33and a softer schedule, I think wins Belitnikoff. Oh, really? Hmm. Jeremiah Smith, I think
05:40does. And I think people are going to recognize that a lot of those yards are going to come
05:44from Malachi Tony against inferior opponents. And maybe his numbers aren't as large throughout
05:50the course of the season because they might not be playing in the second half of a lot
05:54of games. But Jeremiah Smith, because I'll go back. They only play the next team that
05:59they play that's ranked at Notre Dame. And for Jeremiah Smith, he's just going to have
06:04more impressive numbers because they're going to play at Texas, at Indiana, at USC and Oregon.
06:10Like there are moments there where he can go up against better, better defenses and his numbers
06:16are going to be more impressive and mean more. Well done. How about J.J. Buchanan?
06:20Where are Michigan going to be without him? Let's check in with a team that might be the
06:24only team in the country that has worse vibes than Michigan. And we're talking about Clemson's
06:29drubbing at the hands of LSU. Dabble's Tigers have now lost four straight season openers by
06:35scores of 51 to 10, 17 to 10, 34 to 3, 28 to 7. That's an aggregate of 130 to
06:4531. Will this
06:46be Dabo Sweeney's last year at Clemson? It will not. And I say that because Clemson has shown that
06:53they want to be a program that does it, quote unquote, the right way. And Dabo is a coach that's
06:59holding tight to what he believes and doing it the right way. The other thing, and I say that in
07:05the
07:05lead up to Dabo Sweeney's buyout this year, $57 million. What is it next year? It actually goes up
07:13bizarrely, the way that it's written and the bonuses and the money that he gets,
07:19$60 million next year. He's going to be there for a couple of more years.
07:23Greg, you said they've been outscored by 99 points in their last four season openers?
07:28Yes.
07:29This has got to be it. Their last playoff win was 2019. They've only made the playoff once since.
07:35He's not here to win the Cheez-It Bowl. And while there's a big buyout, there has to be a
07:38mutual parting of ways. He should get most of that money and be gone. I don't think it will be
07:44mutual if they do. Because I think as much as Dabo complains about the state of college sports,
07:50he knows he has a good job. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that 99 point differential, that's not stumbling out of
07:56the gate. That's face planting out of the gate. Ohio State versus... Just imagine if you picked
08:00them to be a national champs. What was last year? What a dumbass. Ohio State versus Texas highlights
08:06a week two slate that features 12 non-conference games featuring power four teams. Both the
08:13Buckeyes and Longhorns are among the national title favorites, and both are expected to make
08:17the playoff. So what's at stake Saturday night? For the winner, it's potentially a buy, and
08:21I think that's significant, having to play one less game en route to a national title. And
08:25it's a strike for the loser. Remember, the loser of this game missed the playoffs last year
08:30as a three-loss football team, and his coach bitched about it the whole way. So don't lose
08:35this game. I think the college football playoff committee will eventually get into the modern
08:41day and say that, yeah, we want to give credit for playing actually good teams in the non-conference.
08:47So I don't know that there's not as many stakes involved in one loss, even two losses.
08:54What's at stake is seeding in the playoffs, like you said, a buy or just seeding?
08:59Say it with me, fellas. They lost to 4-8 Florida last year. That's what kept them out of the
09:04playoffs. Yep. Finally, we tried this last week. Let's try for round two here. And in
09:10the nature of this, we're going to miss, and we're going to miss big. And we did last week,
09:14especially with Miami and Stanford. I was close. Who's on upset alert in week two?
09:20Um, not a lot of matchups that you look at and say, eh, there could be an upset. I'm going
09:25to, I'm going to go to a rivalry game because we all know, hey, rivalry games meet some, I've
09:30been at this one. Uh, and that's Iowa state at Iowa. Iowa state wants to prove that, Hey,
09:35we are still here. We could still put up points. We could still play. Iowa wants to prove that,
09:40Hey, scoring what? 28, 30 points in the first quarter was legit. Um, and it's a four. I was
09:47a 14 and a half point favorite. They're at home. The fight for the Cyhawk trophy. Keep, keep
09:53an eye on that one. So I, I so close with Louisville last week as, as a potential win
09:58over Ole miss, but Ole miss was certainly on alert. No, yes, they were on alert. And I'll
10:02tell you who's on alert this week in week two. It's the Alabama crimson tide. They still looked
10:08one dimensional. Don't let that score fool you. Their quarterback was their leading rusher
10:11outside of Russell. They were under four yards per carry against East Carolina. Who do they
10:17go this week on the road in conference? Kentucky DeBoer at Bama is three and three as a ranked
10:25road favorite versus an unranked team and two and four against the spread alert, alert, alert
10:31Bama's on upset alert. No chance. What's the spread on that one? Ten and a half. There is
10:36our little check on college football on campus. It's 97 one.
