TJ Lang reflects on the Lions 20-17 win over the Green Bay Packers. Lang tells you what he liked and didn't like in the win.
Transcript
00:00Thank you very much.
00:02Welcome back, Dan.
00:03Yeah, good to see Dan back.
00:05And I saw some videos coming out.
00:07Yesterday was, you know, the cancer stuff.
00:11Everybody holds up the signs.
00:13And man, great job by the Lions putting Dan up on the big screen.
00:17Sounded like the entire stadium was cheering for him, obviously.
00:20You know, we don't have to revisit that.
00:22But him and his family going through a tough time.
00:24And that was good stuff.
00:25That was good to see.
00:26But definitely good to see and hear Dan back again, man.
00:30Doing what he does best.
00:32So, again, with the Packers, they missed two field goals that are gimmies.
00:36Chip shots.
00:36Yeah, 26-yarder and then the one that gets tipped after they get great field position.
00:40To get zero points when you take over inside the 25 with five minutes to go.
00:45Among all the other things, you know, the Lions screw up coming in and out of the half with fumbles.
00:49Like, Green Bay, you can't blame officiating.
00:53As poorly officiated as it was, they had still chance after chance.
00:58We used to do that on the other side.
00:59We used to be the Lions fans going, you know, but the officials screwed us.
01:03No.
01:03Take advantage of the plays that were there and Green Bay didn't.
01:06Correct.
01:07And the defense made strides.
01:09Like, they stood up and made some plays when they had to.
01:11And only the one takeaway, which was, we kind of mentioned Branch, was kind of a third and 20, I
01:17think it was.
01:18Kind of an arm punt for Jordan Love.
01:20But I liked some of the things I saw from the defense, punching at some balls.
01:26And they got close to a couple of them.
01:27And that's what Dan Campbell always talks about when he speaks about his defense and what your identity is going
01:32to be.
01:33We're going to get to the football, get some punch-outs.
01:35I saw that a little bit more yesterday.
01:38You know, they didn't end up getting any fumble recoveries.
01:41But, man, they were hawking after the ball.
01:44There's still a couple things to clean up.
01:45There were still a couple fourth downs where, you know, the middle of the defense still has to find a
01:51way to communicate better.
01:52And I don't know if that's a linebacker issue.
01:53I don't know if that's a safety issue, you know, with some guys moving, obviously, around.
01:59Keith Avney also had a tremendous opportunity.
02:02I know.
02:03But that was – it didn't end up costing him because that was right before the missed field goal.
02:07But those are those type of plays that can just, you know, get the crowd going, rejuvenate the defense, man,
02:13get going, right?
02:14Like, so there's still a couple plays.
02:16But there was – I think there was a fourth down where, man, Tucker Craft was wide open, right?
02:21And then a fourth down, I think, later in the game, you've got Christian Watson just kind of running a
02:26little skinny post route, like, pretty wide open.
02:29Like, these guys just have to continue to learn just to get a little bit of depth, understand where the
02:35sticks are.
02:35If it's third and eight, get to ten yards.
02:37If they want to throw a six-yard route, then we hustle up and we, you know, rally and tackle,
02:42keeping short of the sticks.
02:43But overall, it felt like the defense won them the game.
02:51It kind of felt that way.
02:53One of their better performances, for sure.
02:55Yeah, you hold Green Bay to 17 points.
02:58You hold anybody in this league to 17 points with the offense that you have.
03:02But they had been rolling, and we were specifically going, oh, boy, they can convert these explosives down the field.
03:06And they really didn't.
03:07So let me ask you this question, then.
03:09You are allowed to get better throughout the course of the season.
03:11Coaches can coach different.
03:13They can put you in a different position.
03:14Players can actually get better and be, you know, in a scheme better.
03:19Do you trust the four games that they had at the beginning of the season or the last two of
03:24this defense?
03:26I think they're building towards, like, the vision that they want to play, how they want to play.
03:32Do you still want to see them go out and add a corner?
03:35Yes.
03:35Okay.
03:36Yes, I do.
03:37And I think that they're playing better.
03:39Don't get me wrong.
03:41But if you could add a guy, and gosh, I hate, like, the hypotheticals.
03:45Oh, look at this guy, this guy.
03:47But there's certainly teams around the league right now that are going to sell.
03:50We talked about it, I think, three weeks ago.
03:52Man, wait until the trade deadline.
03:54You might have some guys that aren't available.
03:56Obviously, Joey Porter.
03:58Would it be funny if you just called Dallas?
04:00Like, hey, we'll give you a third for your guys' seasons.
04:03Which I don't think their season's over, obviously, with Philly going through what they're doing.
04:07Yeah, right.
04:08I mean, they can drop to 2-5, and all of a sudden, hey, we'll give you a third for
04:13Joey Porter Jr.
04:14You guys, he hasn't signed an extension yet.
04:17That would be hilarious.
04:18But if they do, I think I heard you guys talking about this maybe last week.
04:23Just some names to throw out.
04:25And a guy on Philly who would be trade bait if they are going to go that route.
04:30Like, Reek Wollin is, I'm not saying he's a Richard Sherman type of player,
04:35but you talk about a guy with some size.
04:37I think he's 6'3".
04:39He's lengthy.
04:41He's playing pretty well out there in Philly.
04:43He's kind of playing that third guy right now because they have Cooper DeGene and Quinion Mitchell.
04:48But could he be a guy that could come in here and at least give you somebody to match up
04:53with the guys like Christian Watson, who is a big receiver?
04:55Because when I look at the secondary of this Lions team,
05:00a lot of these guys are 5'10", 5'11".
05:03You don't really have that tall, lengthy guy that can match up one-on-one.
05:08When it comes to a jump ball situation or some of those fade routes, I would absolutely.
05:13And if they were thinking a couple weeks ago, Dan Campbell, you guys said confirmed
05:18that they were interested in Joey Porter Jr.
05:21He said it at the podium.
05:22So I don't think that anything's happened over the last two games where they're like,
05:25oh, nope, we're good.
05:26Everybody's playing great.
05:27We're right where we need to be.
05:29I think they're still going to be in that market.
05:30And if anything, when you win, you realize, oh, we could be in for a long season.
05:34We want to make sure we're geared up to capitalize.
05:37Like, the Minnesota game matters a whole hell of a lot more because of what they just did.
05:41You know, that's why we're not going to apologize or feel bad.
05:44Like, they certainly, to me, felt like they got away with one yesterday.
05:47But it sets up, they stay on the tracks, and it makes the Minnesota game even bigger now.
05:52Yeah.
05:52You know?
05:53You could say, I mean, I hate to say they got away with one.
05:55And certainly there were some calls that, but listen, we've seen hundreds of games where
06:02the Lions have been on the opposite side of that.
06:03You're not going to get me to feel bad about it.
06:05You know what everybody says?
06:06Oh, don't make excuses.
06:07It's not an excuse.
06:08Referee's not an excuse.
06:09I don't want to hear any of that today.
06:11That's what I'm saying.
06:11I don't want to hear any of Green Bay got screwed.
06:13We've been on the flip side of that way more than we've been on this side of it.
06:16Okay?
06:17So if we weren't allowed to use it as an excuse when it was going against us, we ain't using
06:23it as an excuse against Green Bay.
06:25Oh, trust me.
06:25I like being on this side of it.
06:27And I love that they're the ones bitching about it.
06:29So we have the audio.
06:30This is Xavier McKinney, Packer Safety.
07:15This is Xavier McKinney, Packer Safety.
07:40Welcome to our world.
07:42Enjoy that fine that's coming.
07:45I don't disagree with him.
07:47And you know, the crazy thing was that I'm no conspiracy theorist, but didn't the referees
07:54have like a kind of mini lockout this offseason?
07:57Yeah.
07:57They hadn't gotten an extension.
07:59The CBA that they have for their own, you know, union, whatever it was.
08:03It's like, do these guys get commissioned per flag?
08:07It's all over the league now.
08:09Is it like, it's like literally gotten worse, man.
08:15It has.
08:16And I'm not even only saying this game.
08:18You watch any other game.
08:19Like Cam Scadaboo had a play yesterday.
08:22He's meeting the safety one-on-one in the hole.
08:24He lowers his shoulder and he gets a personal foul for it.
08:28I'm like, what are you supposed to do?
08:30Torque your body out of the way?
08:31Yeah.
08:32And be like, oh, here, hit me in the shoulder.
08:33I got to get my head out of the way.
08:35I got to torque my body.
08:36Yeah.
08:37It's all over the league, man.
08:39It's unbelievable.
08:40Some of these calls that you see week after week.
08:42As much money as the NFL prints, I would think that they would look at one of, so you've got
08:49both teams and then you have the officials.
08:52They're all a part of the game.
08:54And with as much money as is invested in these games and with as much money that is now being
09:01invested into gambling in these games, why don't you make your officials full-time employees
09:09so that's all they do all week long?
09:12They're studying the teams that are coming up.
09:15Like, what are the tendencies of these teams?
09:17Do we have an offensive lineman that has a tendency to line up in the backfield?
09:22Or, you know, how do they use their hands?
09:25Defensive players.
09:26How are they playing these wide receivers?
09:27Same thing with the receivers.
09:28Like, if you have, if you're spending all week long studying just like players do, the
09:33officials should be doing the same thing.
09:35And I'm sure you sat, tell me if we've got a break, Jim.
09:38No, you're good.
09:39I'm sure we, you sat through probably the same meetings I did for 10 years where you put
09:43up, they put up a list of the officials that are working your game that week.
09:47And it says, hey, this is Jim Rice and he's a lawyer and he's got, you know, three kids.
09:54And it's so, like, you try to make it more personal so when you're out on the field and
09:58you've got these long TV timeouts where, you know, hey, how are the kids doing, man?
10:02Like, hey, how's work going, right?
10:04Because it does kind of seem like this is a secondary job for these guys.
10:08Oh, it is.
10:08So that's been a major, major, major, major problem.
10:10What we used to do as well is, okay, we'll take a look at the, you know, the line officials
10:14and, you know, what is the tendency that they're calling?
10:18Is this guy calling more holding calls?
10:20All right.
10:20Well, we got, we got to be on guard as to what, who the officials are and how they like
10:25to call these games.
10:26Yeah.
10:26I got a question I wanted to ask.
10:28How much time do we got?
10:29A minute.
10:29Okay.
10:30You guys were mentioning, you know, if we, if the line should still be asking for some
10:35secondary help.
10:36Yeah.
10:36Yeah.
10:37Should they look to maybe add, I'm not saying, obviously we have Jameer Gibbs, but a little
10:42bit of help in the backfield.
10:43Yeah.
10:43He's taking a heavy work and they told us he was going to be a bell cow.
10:46Yeah.
10:47But through six games, he's taking a lot of touches, man.
10:49And once you start getting into November, December football, should, is that a position
10:54you think they should start looking at to maybe help out?
10:56I think they're cheap.
10:56There's three positions.
10:58Obviously, corner would be at the top of the list.
11:00I think they could still use a little help in the, in depth of the linebacker room.
11:04Yeah.
11:04And I also think a backup running back.
11:07In that order.
11:08Yeah.
11:08Yeah.
11:09Call Tennessee.
11:09I mean, Tony Pollard, Spears, like those guys.
11:13I mean, obviously to come in to be RB2.
11:16Number two.
11:16Because I think Vocky had one carry yesterday.
11:19Gibbs has taken on a heavy workload and he can handle it.
11:21We've seen that.
11:22But man, you start getting into week 10, week, yeah.
11:25Week 12, week 14.
11:26You want to be playing in weeks.
11:27Start wearing you out a little bit.
11:2818, 19.
11:29You want to play a long season.
11:31You want to be in this thing in the postseason.
11:32I wanted to ask about Cade Mays.
11:34I'm just not going to do it with only a couple seconds here.
11:38We still have 30 minutes.
11:39TJ, your full review in three seconds, TJ.
11:42Can you give me your full breakdown of Cade Mays?
11:44No, we'll do that next.
11:45Because I know, John, you gave us.
11:47Yeah, C plus.
11:47Yeah.
11:47Thumbs up or thumbs down?
11:48There you go.
11:49Okay, there we go.
11:50No need for nuance.
11:51We're good to go.
11:52We'll get some of the thoughts on that next.
11:54Plus, I know you guys are waiting.
11:55We'll take phone calls to 97.1.
