00:04Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the moments
00:09when an actor's singing talents broke out and were revealed to a wide audience.
00:28As Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke was too busy raising dragons
00:33and trying to reclaim the Iron Throne to spend any time singing a song.
00:37So while the HBO show made her famous, it didn't expose us to her singing abilities.
00:41For that, we had to wait for the 2019 film, Last Christmas.
00:59This sweet rom-com gets its title from the hit George Michael song,
01:02and it is that song which Clarke sings in the big penultimate scene.
01:06And not only does she sing it beautifully, she belts out the first verse totally acapella.
01:11This year, to save me from tears, I'll give it to someone special.
01:19Number 29, Taron Egerton, Rocket Man.
01:23Biggest kick I ever got, he's doing a thing called the crocodile rock.
01:28While the other kids were rockin' round the clock, we were hopin' fastin' to the crocodile rock.
01:35While the younger crowd became aware of Taron Egerton's vocal talents in the 2016 animated movie Sing,
01:41it wasn't until 2019 that the wider movie-going audience learned just how good he is.
01:46In Sing, Egerton voices Johnny the gorilla,
01:49who wows the audience with his rendition of Elton John's I'm Still Standing.
01:53This is ironic, of course, because that 2019 movie we alluded to
01:57was the Elton John biopic Rocket Man.
02:00You'll be a clown by now
02:03Look, I feel better, better than I ever did
02:09Looking like a true survivor
02:11Feeling like a little kid
02:14Egerton sings all the songs in the film,
02:16and according to the film's musical director,
02:19John told him that, quote,
02:20I don't think I've heard anyone sing my songs better than Taron.
02:23High praise, indeed.
02:25I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
02:32How wonderful life is
02:35While you're in the woods
02:41Number 28, Robert Downey Jr., Ally McBeal
02:44Thank you all for coming.
02:46It's good to be in Boston.
02:51Here's a little something
02:52Robert Downey Jr. has actually done quite a bit of singing on screen
02:56over his decades-long career.
02:58You might even remember that back in 2003,
03:00he was the lead in a film called The Singing Detective.
03:03However, it was actually on the Ally McBeal television show
03:06that many first got to hear his singing voice.
03:09Make a lot of money
03:10Then I'm gonna quit this crazy scene
03:13Oh, wish I had a referral
03:16I could skate away on
03:21RDJ had a recurring role on the series
03:24and he was known to bust out a tune or two.
03:26Fans were treated to a range
03:28spanning from Joni Mitchell's lovely River
03:30to an every-breath-you-take duet with Sting.
03:41Number 27, Mike Feist, West Side Story
03:44When you're a red jet, you're the top cat in town
03:47You're the gold medal kid with the heavyweight crown
03:51We don't want to anger all the Broadway fans out there.
03:54We are one of you.
03:55We know that Mike Feist originated and played the role of Connor Murphy
03:58in the stage production of Dear Evan Hansen for three years beginning in 2015.
04:03However, as great as he was in that show,
04:05the size of the Broadway audience doesn't compare to the number of eyes
04:09and ears laid on him with his performance in Steven Spielberg's 2021 remake of West Side Story.
04:14Then you are set with a capital J
04:17which you'll never forget
04:19till they caught you away when you're a jet
04:21The film was roundly praised
04:24and many, including Quentin Tarantino,
04:27singled out Feist's performance as a standout.
04:29Movie fans now know what theater fans had known for years.
04:33Just play it cool, boy.
04:36Real cool.
04:39Number 26, Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born
04:54Sure, we all know Bradley Cooper's a great singer now.
04:57That's an obvious statement to make in the years
04:59since the release of A Star is Born.
05:01But try thinking back prior to 2018
05:03when that was not an obvious thing to say.
05:05Everybody in this bar is talented in one thing or another
05:08but having something to say
05:10and a way to say it so people listen to it
05:12that's a whole other bag.
05:14In 2012, Cooper showed us he could dance in Silver Linings' playbook
05:18and in 2014, he amazed us all with his ability to act
05:21while holding a doll and pretending it was a real baby in American Sniper.
05:25But it wasn't until we heard him belt out black eyes
05:28and shallow in A Star is Born
05:30that his talented singing chops were put on full display.
05:33Is there anything this man can't do?
05:34In the shadow, shadow
05:38We're full from the shadow now
05:45Number 25, Carey Mulligan, Shame
05:49Start spreading the news
05:58Although she's married to Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons,
06:02Carey Mulligan should feel no shame or doubt
06:04about her ability to hold her own with her hubby when singing.
06:07The pair were married in 2012
06:09and maybe it was her beautiful rendition of New York, New York
06:12in the 2011 film Shame that sealed the deal with Mr. Mumford.
06:16I'm king of the hill
06:23Top of the hill
06:28But regardless, it was that scene that sealed the deal with audiences
06:31concerning our discovery of a beautiful and talented actress
06:34who could also belt out an amazing tune as well.
06:38New York
06:47New York
06:51Number 24, Scarlett Johansson, Sing
06:54Ash, babe, I'm the lead singer, okay?
06:57Just stick to the backing vocals?
06:59Sorry, I get carried away.
07:00Scarlett Johansson not only has two Academy Award nominations,
07:04she also has two studio albums to her name.
07:07That's right, back near the end of the aughts,
07:09Johansson put out two full-length studio albums
07:11over the course of a couple of years.
07:22They're good, but sales were minimal
07:24and the highest either of them reached on the charts
07:26was 15 in Switzerland.
07:28So it would be fair to say that going into 2016,
07:31Johansson's singing talents were still not widely known.
07:34And then came Sing and Johansson's voicing of Ash,
07:37the rocking porcupine.
07:38And needless to say, she rocked it.
07:43Cause I'm here and never letting go
07:46I can finally sing
07:49It's not just a dream
07:51When you set it all free, all free, all free
07:54Number 23, Florence Pugh, A Good Person
07:57There's all the people that dance
08:00and they're having such fun
08:02I wish it could happen to me
08:07Florence Pugh made her film debut back in 2014
08:10and hit it big just five years later
08:12with roles in two acclaimed films
08:14Midsommar and Little Women
08:16However, although by 2019
08:17she was becoming a household name
08:19there weren't many, if any
08:21who would associate that name
08:22with a great singing voice
08:24But I can't shake you off, dear
08:28I sit on trains and think of you
08:32In 2023, she starred in A Good Person
08:35showing the world a whole new facet
08:37of her talents as a performer
08:38And not only did she wonderfully sing
08:40a couple of truly beautiful songs
08:42in that movie
08:42She also wrote them
08:57Number 22, Evan Rachel Wood, Across the Universe
09:01Evan Rachel Wood starred in her school's production
09:11of The Little Mermaid
09:12But we're going to go out on a limb
09:14and assume none of you saw that
09:15What many did see, though
09:17was the Beatles jukebox musical
09:19Across the Universe
09:32Evan Rachel Wood plays Lucy
09:34and sings multiple songs throughout the movie
09:36While that was really the first time fans
09:38got to hear her sing
09:39Wood has shown off her vocal talents
09:41a bunch more times
09:42both on and off screen
09:44in the intervening years
09:45Along with her role
09:46as Queen Iduna in Frozen 2
09:48She's also been part of a couple of bands
09:50including Evan and Zayn
09:52who put out a record of cover songs in 2022
10:00Number 21, Carrie Washington, The Prom
10:08That's right, Olivia Pope can sing
10:10Now her job as a fixer
10:12and crisis management expert
10:13in Washington, D.C.
10:14didn't really give her much opportunity
10:16to burst out into song
10:18But as we learned in 2020
10:19If she'd needed to, Carrie Washington would have nailed it
10:22As she did when the singing opportunity arose
10:24in the musical comedy, The Prom
10:26Fixing little problems is what I do
10:29Now everyone is happy, I promise you
10:32And I would never miss a night like this
10:39Based on the Broadway musical of the same name
10:41The Prom did get a limited release in theaters
10:44before setting up shop at Netflix
10:45Which means millions of people
10:47have had the opportunity to Netflix and chill
10:49and learn that Carrie Washington can sing
10:56Number 20, Riley Keough, Daisy Jones and The Six
11:04Given that she is the granddaughter of Elvis Presley
11:08you might have assumed that Riley Keough could sing
11:10But it wasn't until she took on the titular role of Daisy Jones
11:14in Daisy Jones and The Six
11:16that all our assumptions bore out
11:29The miniseries debuted on Prime Video in March of 2023
11:32and tells the fictional tale of the rise and fall
11:35of the band Daisy Jones and The Six in the 1970s
11:38As you might imagine, being the lead female vocalist in a band
11:42required Keough to do a lot of singing
11:44and saying she pulled it off is an understatement
11:54Number 19, Meryl Streep, Postcards from the Edge
12:05A new generation of moviegoers might have been surprised
12:08by Meryl Streep's singing abilities in films like
12:11Mamma Mia and Into the Woods
12:12However, if they'd just asked their parents
12:14they could have told them about a film from 1990
12:17called Postcards from the Edge
12:28The film featured the uber-talented actor
12:31showing off her melodic voice and some country twang
12:34with a great performance of a song called
12:36I'm Checkin' Out
12:37Country music, big musical numbers, ABBA
12:41What can't this woman do?
12:42When we figure it out, we'll let you know
12:51Number 18, Eddie Redmayne, Les Miserables
13:07Eddie Redmayne discovered his love of acting and singing at a young age
13:10when, as a 10-year-old, he attended the Jackie Palmer Stage School
13:14But while he's had a love for singing since childhood
13:17the vast movie-going audience wasn't really aware of his abilities until 2012
13:21Red is the color of desire
13:26Red is the color of despair
13:30When Redmayne appeared in the big Les Miserables movie
13:33he blew many of us away with his vocal talents
13:36While his verses in Red and Black were good
13:39it was his take on empty chairs at empty tables
13:42that was the a-ha moment
13:44Oh, my friends, my friends
13:49Don't ask me
13:52What your sacrifice was for
13:56Number 17, Emmy Rossum, The Phantom of the Opera
14:00All that I've missed I see in the reflection
14:03Pass me while I wasn't paying attention
14:06With the release of two albums and a Christmas EP between 2007 and 2013
14:11Emmy Rossum can now be labeled as a hyphenate actor-singer
14:14Prior to that, the latter may have come as a surprise to fans who only knew her as an actor
14:20That is, until The Phantom of the Opera hit theaters in 2004
14:24And Rossum wowed fans and critics with both her acting and singing as the film's female lead, Christine Daie
14:39The truth is, we shouldn't be surprised given that she joined the Metropolitan Opera Children's Chorus at age 7
14:45Before she was 12 years old, Rossum had performed with both Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti
15:04Number 16, Brittany Murphy, Happy Feet
15:07Brittany Murphy gave us a tiny little taste of her vocal talents in Clueless
15:17Nice to be sure, but that one lyric wasn't enough for us to know she could really, like, really sing
15:23That ability was revealed to a wide movie-going audience over 10 years later
15:28When Murphy voiced Gloria the Penguin in the animated hit Happy Feet
15:41Gloria definitely stands out as one of the most talented songbirds among the Penguins
15:46From Somebody to Love to Boogie Wonderland, Murphy's Awesome Pipes were a highlight of the film
15:52Yes!
15:53Mambo!
15:55Boogie Wonderland!
15:59Number 15, Dwayne Johnson
16:01Moana
16:02Yo, this is The Rock, kicking it with the refugee camp
16:05And you're about to smell what The Rock is cooking
16:07Dwayne Johnson's ability on the mic has never been in doubt
16:10His ability to engage and bring a crowd to their feet with his words is legendary
16:15But doing it in a song?
16:17Well, that's not something we knew he could do until Moana
16:21There's no need to pray, it's okay, you're welcome
16:24I guess it's just my way of being mean
16:28Sure, he was featured on the Wyclef Jean track, It Doesn't Matter
16:31But that was all spoken word
16:33As the voice of the demigod Maui in the 2016 Disney animated hit
16:38Johnson showed us that he could totally carry a tune
16:40And to that we say, thank you
16:43You're welcome
16:44You're welcome
16:45You're welcome
16:47You're welcome
16:47You're welcome
16:48Number 14, Kristen Bell
16:49Frozen
16:50Kristen Bell did appear on Broadway early in her career
16:54And as Veronica Mars, Bell did rock it at karaoke night in season 1
16:58But it wasn't until a few years later that we all really got to appreciate Bell's singing abilities
17:04In 2013's Frozen
17:06Wow, am I so ready for this change
17:10Cause for the first time in forever
17:15There'll be music, there'll be light
17:19Bell lent her voice to Queen Elsa's sister, Princess Anna
17:22In the beginning of the film, when Elsa, fearing her powers, hides away in her room
17:27Anna continues to attempt to bring her out of isolation
17:30People are asking where you've been
17:34They say I have courage and I'm trying to
17:37I'm right out here for you
17:40Just let me in
17:42Do You Wanna Build a Snowman is a sweet song that cuts to the heart of a child's loneliness
17:47and desire to just spend time with her sister again
17:49That's when we knew Bell was a great singer
17:53For the first time in forever
18:00Nothing's in my world
18:04Number 13. Ewan McGregor, Moulin Rouge
18:08With Trainspotting, Ewan McGregor showed the world that he could recite awesome movie opening monologues
18:13But it wasn't until Moulin Rouge that he showed the world he could sing
18:29He had multiple opportunities to show off as well
18:32From your song to come what may and more
18:35McGregor's vocal chops were put to the test throughout the film
18:38And he was up to the challenge each and every time
18:41I will love you
18:44I will love you
18:48Until my day
18:56His musical abilities may have come as a surprise
18:59But they haven't gone to waste since Moulin Rouge
19:02McGregor's singing has been featured in several projects he's undertaken in the intervening years
19:07So we took Manhattan without the bidders
19:11We're staying put, last calls for quitters
19:15Number 12. Amanda Seyfried, Mamma Mia
19:18I have a dream
19:22A song to sing
19:25Amanda Seyfried first won us over with her portrayal of Karen Smith in 2004's Mean Girls
19:31Little did we know that her musical talents extended far beyond an impromptu rendition of Jingle Bell Rock
19:37That changed when she was cast in the hit 2008 jukebox musical Mamma Mia
19:42I wanted to know some more
19:45And now I know what they mean
19:48Seyfried sings multiple songs in the movie
19:50And we gotta say to her
19:52Honey, honey, you are good
19:54And just to put a cherry on this sundae
19:56Check out her beautiful rendition of Fleetwood Mac's Songbird
19:59And notice, she also plays the piano
20:02And I love you, I love you, I love you
20:07I ain't never before
20:12Number 11. Andrew Garfield, Tick Tick Boom
20:16There were probably some who scoffed at the thought of Andrew Garfield playing Spider-Man
20:20Until he web-slung his way to the top
20:23And similarly, there were surely some who didn't think he could pull off the lead role
20:27In Lin-Manuel Miranda's 2021 musical Tick Tick Boom
20:31I make a vow
20:34Right here and now
20:38I'm gonna spend
20:41My time this way
20:43While Garfield had never done anything similar before
20:46He dedicated a year to intense vocal training in preparation for his role as Jonathan Larson
20:52The results speak for themselves
21:05Garfield proved his doubters wrong one song at a time
21:08If anything, his lack of prior experience just makes his vocal chops even more impressive
21:14By the end of the movie, he had sung straight into our hearts
21:25Number 10. Emma Stone, Easy A
21:28Early in her career, Emma Stone showed that she could easily steal a scene with roles like Wichita in Zombieland
21:34But it was her role as Olive in Easy A that fully brought her into the spotlight
21:38I don't wanna lose you with this good thing
21:44That I've got
21:46The teen film showed off her comedy and musical skills
21:49In the latter part of the story, her character Olive needs to get the attention of the entire school
21:55In order to later lay down some truths
21:57What better way to do that than by breaking into her rendition of Knock on Wood at a pep rally
22:16Stone's raspy belting in this classic was a sneak peek at her future musical accolades
22:22Her role in La La Land notably earned her a Golden Globe and an Oscar
22:26And here's to the fools who dream
22:32Crazy as they may seem
22:37Number 9. Antonio Banderas, Evita
22:50As Banderas' first English-speaking role, 1992's The Mambo Kings probably marked the first time many North American audiences heard
22:58the actor sing
22:58However, it was a smaller part, and he wasn't a huge star yet
23:03After solidifying his status as an extremely talented individual in projects like Desperado and Interview with the Vampire, Banderas brought
23:11Che to life in 1996's musical drama Evita
23:30He's the voice of the Argentinian people, expressing how they view Eva Perón, and what a voice he has
23:37He clearly holds his own with co-star Madonna, showing that he's a musical star to be reckoned with
23:43Very simple, ever around fundamental system of government, quite incidental
23:52Number 8. Anne Hathaway, Ella Enchanted
23:55Anybody find me
24:06Somebody to love
24:12Anne Hathaway had audiences sobbing as Fantine in the 2012 film version of Les Miserables
24:17However, her absolutely mesmerizing singing voice was actually revealed in one of her earlier films, Ella Enchanted
24:24When Hathaway's plucky heroine Ella is magically compelled to sing for a crowded tavern full of giants
24:30She belts out a rousing rendition of Queen's Somebody to Love
24:46The fun number shows the star's range, proving she can completely enchant us with her sound
24:51The award-winning actress isn't one to shy away from the microphone
24:55Even triumphing in a playful singing battle against Kelly Clarkson
24:59Since you've been gone
25:00I can't breathe for the first time
25:05I'm so moving on
25:09Number 7. Michelle Pfeiffer, The Fabulous Baker Boys
25:13Many people are shocked when they realize the sassy blonde singing Cool Rider, among other tunes, in Grease 2, is
25:20Michelle Pfeiffer in her first big turn as a leading lady
25:35The film wasn't as well known as other projects of hers, like Scarface or Married to the Mob
25:40So when her character Susie Diamond auditioned in The Fabulous Baker Boys
25:44Many folks watching were probably just as surprised as the two pianists at her sultry voice
25:49You need me so
25:52More than you'll ever
26:01Know
26:08In the film, Diamond sings a variety of jazz standards
26:11However, it's her sensual performance of making whoopee that has become truly iconic
26:16And for good reason
26:18Just look at her go
26:20But don't forget folks
26:23That's what you get folks
26:27For making whoopee
26:31Number 6. Amy Adams, Enchanted
26:34Audiences and critics first noticed Amy Adams in her award-winning role as a cheerful chatterbox in 2005's Junebug
26:41But she struggled to match those accolades until she fully embraced her inner princess
26:46That's how you know
26:49He loves you
26:51That's how you know
26:55He's true
26:57Adams sang her way into everyone's hearts as the sweet and bubbly Giselle
27:02Although tunes like True Love's Kiss and Happy Working Song poke a little fun at the Disney musical traditions
27:07Adams' sweet tone and genuine delivery gives them their own truth
27:24She continued to show off her stunning vocals in films like The Muppets and appeared again as Giselle in Disenchanted
27:31No matter the part, Adams never fails to deliver both on the acting and singing fronts
27:37I'm having a meat party
27:39A party by myself
27:41A meat party
27:42I don't need nobody else
27:45Number 5. Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
27:48Welcome to Nancy Jackson
27:51Go ahead and wreck your hell
27:55Don't worry you're a honey
27:57You picked out the man
27:59Making it full of yourself
28:02The spunky energy Witherspoon brought to characters like Elle Woods in Legally Blonde
28:06Made her a perfect fit for the sassy June Carter
28:09However, Witherspoon had no professional singing experience
28:13After extensive training though, she showed audiences she could take the stage with energy and some impressive vocals
28:27She wasn't the only one to stun in this film either
28:30Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of Johnny Cash had critics like Roger Ebert
28:34Wondering if he was lip-syncing to the original artist
28:37But nope, both actors perform all of their own music for the film
28:41And when their voices combine, it's true cinematic magic
28:56Number 4. Emily Blunt, Into the Woods
28:59It never was a natural fit for me to sing in front of people
29:04I just, I always loved singing, just found it difficult to sing in front of people
29:07Emily Blunt excels at portraying confident women
29:10Whether it's as the sarcastic assistant in The Devil Wears Prada
29:14Or as the destroyer of aliens in Edge of Tomorrow
29:17So it's somewhat surprising to hear that she was apprehensive about singing as the baker's wife in Into the Woods
29:34Sondheim's music is notoriously difficult
29:36But Blunt's first song in the film makes it clear that she had no reason to be worried
29:41It's a good thing too, because just a few years later
29:44She expertly brought the one and only Mary Poppins to life
29:48Her charming musical performance as the magical nanny even has her keeping up with an all-star like Lin-Manuel
29:54Miranda
30:02Number 3. Jeremy Renner, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
30:07If you caught a few of Jeremy Renner's early movies, you might have noticed that he could carry a tune
30:12There's notably a brief moment in 2005's North Country where we hear him do some credible karaoke
30:19However, once he started slinging arrows in the MCU
30:25It was hard to think of Renner as anything but Hawkeye
30:29So it was a fun moment for all when he combined his singing background with his action hero status
30:33On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
30:48In the segment, Renner sits down at a piano in costume, fully in character
30:53And belts about the character's many unappreciated talents
30:57If you want more of that, he's also released music of his own
31:01Where's his part in Rogers the Musical?
31:10Number 2. Hugh Jackman, The Tony Awards
31:14Hugh Jackman had his breakout as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise
31:18So it might have surprised those action fans to learn that he has an extensive musical theater background
31:34Interestingly, one of his first acting jobs was playing Gaston in the stage version of Beauty and the Beast
31:40We'd also be remiss not to mention his work in The Boy From Oz
31:57His performance as Jean Valjean in 2012's Les Miserables movie further demonstrated his vocal prowess to a wide audience
32:04However, he blew many out of the water when he put his skills on display as the host of the
32:09Tony Awards several times
32:11Jackman seemingly had a great time showing off his singing talents for musical theater fans with a variety of cheeky
32:17melodies

32:47Number 1. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Chicago
33:00Chicago director Rob Marshall says that Catherine Zeta-Jones was an easy choice for his film
33:05Indeed, her musical theater experience started with a West End production of Annie when she was still just a kid
33:12However, until Chicago, many fans mainly knew her as a leading lady in action and comedy flicks
33:18When Zeta-Jones made her sultry entrance as the merry-murderess Val McKellie
33:22Her powerful vocals were a delightful surprise
33:25Her passionate and powerful voice not only stole the show
33:40But also earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress
33:44Considering the way she fully immerses herself into and sells each of the film's songs with gusto
33:50It's easy to see why
33:52But if I done it, she done it
33:54How could you tell me that I was wrong?
