00:01Let's go
00:02This all started with a simple idea
00:051, 2, 3, GO!
00:07To create a life where we could live off the land
00:10Look at these bad boys, these are up to my waist
00:13Now this is home
00:15Hello my little piggies
00:18Here's your food
00:19A busy working farm
00:21Come on then, I'm making this farm in me like you look a little bit too easy aren't I?
00:26On the edge of the Peak District National Park
00:28It's so special just seeing the beauty that nature gives you
00:32Where no two days are ever quite the same
00:35Yeah!
00:36What about the cow?
00:37Ah!
00:39I don't keep the lamb on the leg
00:41Did you know?
00:42Yeah
00:43But just when we think we've got something figured out
00:45It's like a board meeting isn't it?
00:47What time's lunch?
00:48Farming teaches us something new
00:50Welcome from there and then back down
00:53Ah ah, not that way
00:55And growing up right at the heart of it all are these four
00:59Are you doing?
01:01Farming is full of surprises
01:03Oh my god it is
01:04No
01:04It's a chick
01:05This is amazing
01:07What a moment
01:08But that's all part of the adventure
01:10I can't imagine a life now without this little farm
01:20This week on our farm
01:23I get to work out with the pigs as I try and separate the girls from the boys ahead of
01:28breeding
01:28Now I'm just going to double check
01:30I don't want to see any testicles
01:33Four females done
01:35Milo's getting ready to take on an important role outside the farm
01:40I promise to be helpful and kind and love our world
01:45Good lad
01:47You'll
01:47I just
01:48I've always knew that you would be good at babies because you're just that type of boy
01:51You're just a kind boy
01:53And we take a much needed break from lambing season with the kids and discover a magical untouched part of
02:00our woods
02:01It's so special especially having the kids with us and just exploring and just seeing the beauty that nature gives
02:07you and it's so incredible
02:35Like family life farming life has a natural rhythm to it
02:39And it revolves around food and ensuring it's in good supply for all the livestock we rear
02:46These morning rounds are like the bread and butter of the day but they take time
02:50Before you know it it's lunch time and then before you know it something's happened that puts a spanner in
02:55the works
02:55And then before you know it your whole day is gone
02:57That is just continuous farming
03:00Milo's job is to keep his twin brothers entertained
03:03This is going to be really good
03:05Yeah
03:06Aren't it nice?
03:07Come on let's keep playing in it
03:12While we work our way around the livestock making sure everything is well fed and watered
03:17These sheep must have been on the second cycle so it feels like their lambing time is taking forever
03:24And I think any pregnant woman knows that last two weeks of pregnancy feels like longer than the whole nine
03:29months
03:30So I feel for them a little bit
03:33They're just like come on
03:35Get me out in the sun get me out in the field
03:38Get this baby out of me
03:43And one baby that needs a little extra TLC at feeding time is Hope, our Cade lamb that was rejected
03:50by her mum
03:55Come on
03:56Come on
03:59Got some more
04:00Hmm
04:03Right let's see if he'll have any more
04:04Anymore
04:08Marnie has taken Hope under her wing
04:10But while she's at a dance class, Liz is taking on feeding duties
04:15It is like teaching a baby feeding from a bottle
04:18You've got to get used to it
04:20Let's get you in the right position
04:22Well I think all like mums know that first feeling of feeding a baby with a bottle
04:28Is er
04:30They don't take to it straight away
04:31So you've got to just give them a bit of chance
04:33Come on you want to go for a run around don't you
04:35Come on then
04:37Let's go on an adventure
04:38Let's let you
04:40Have a little break
04:41Come on
04:42I love it when they like jump up and they
04:44Like they literally hop
04:46Come on
04:49You have to bottle feed them
04:50Until they're ready to eat grass
04:53Erm and
04:54Although you never want a lamb to be a Cade lamb
04:56You want them to be with their mum really
04:57But
04:58It is super cute
05:00And the good thing is they become very tame
05:03So even though
05:05When we do put her back in the field
05:07Erm
05:10When you go in the field
05:12She'll run to you like a dog
05:16While the three boys seem to be keeping themselves entertained
05:20Ginger, our cover Pouchon
05:22Is also enjoying having a new playmate
05:25You know what Ginger is so nice with the Cade lamb
05:28She's sniffed her bum a few times
05:32But mainly
05:33Watch
05:34Mainly nose
05:36To not bother
05:36Oh
05:38That is just so cute
05:43Oh don't go down there
05:48Just like the kids
05:50Always running off
05:51Do you want to go and get in the sun a little bit?
05:55Get some like
05:56Bit of mint day
05:58Go and see the chickens
06:00Come on
06:01This way
06:02This way
06:04After a little explore and some milk
06:06Hope will stay in the barn until Marnie gets back from dancing
06:09To sort a next feed
06:12Can I go and grab that feed and I'll pick you up?
06:14Yeah
06:19Next job
06:20Feeding our ever hungry pigs
06:24Do you want to try to eat?
06:34We want to walk a little bit of a boat
06:35Are we gonna see?
06:35Let's see
06:35With my own words
06:35Are we gonna get in the forest?
06:37We could just take a little bit of water
06:43It would just be there
06:44To do with the dogs
06:52And the birds
06:57...
06:58The land we farm stretches over 120 acres of Cheshire in the Peak District National Park.
07:07And over the last five years, it's morphed and changed.
07:10And now it's time to reshape the land once again, making it work even better for the life we're building
07:16here.
07:18...
11:26So does our desire
27:12Mais...
27:13...nobody else was doing oats.
27:27...and...
27:45...that was a success.
27:45...'il y a jamais vu.
27:46...'il y a jamais vu.
27:46...'il y a jamais vu.
28:13...'il y a jamais vu.
28:15...'il y a jamais vu.
28:22...'il y a jamais vu.
28:51...'il y a jamais vu.
28:52...'il y a jamais vu.
29:20...'il y a jamais vu.
29:39...'il y a jamais vu.
29:47...'il y a jamais vu.
29:47...'il y a jamais vu.
30:00...'il y a jamais vu.
30:04...'il y a jamais vu.
30:06...'il y a jamais vu.
30:07...'I don't know if I'm just attracted to things but these are like headless sheep.
30:12Don't they?
30:13It must just be the thing I'm drawn to now.
30:16That's my vibe now.
30:21I love them though.
30:24Liz has discovered a real passion for interiors and she fusses over every last detail before guests arrive.
31:01With back-to-back bookings, the cottage is now established as an essential income stream for the farm.
31:07And it's Liz's pride and joy.
31:10And even if the farm or our own home is in chaos, this place always looks immaculate.
31:19So, I've got a bit of maintenance to do today.
31:22This little piece just came off the mirror.
31:25So you should just slot in like that.
31:30And if I hold it for long enough, I'm hoping it stays.
31:35Let's put some glue on it.
31:37I've tried every glue from every hardware store going and none of it works.
31:41And this is the glue that I use to gem Marnie's dance costumes.
31:47And it is the strongest stuff in the world.
31:51So I'm hoping that this works instead.
31:56Hold it.
32:00Just think about my life choices for ten minutes.
32:05I find my calm being alone in the lambing shed.
32:08But for Liz, the cottage has become her sanctuary.
32:12None of this is what I wanted to do.
32:14But it's what I absolutely love doing.
32:17And now, the next big project is actually our house, which I didn't ever think was going to be on
32:22the list.
32:23But, yeah, it'll be nice to put this energy and effort into the house now.
32:28And build a home for the kids.
32:30The twins don't remember living in it.
32:32That's how long it's been.
32:34They call it the burnt house.
32:37Which is, erm...
32:39It's sad, really, but...
32:41But, listen...
32:44One day we'll be able to move back in and it'll just be their home.
32:48I imagine it'll take us forever to finish it, but I guess that'll be part of our story now, won't
32:53it?
32:54I can't wait to lay some bricks.
32:56Start mixing some cement.
32:58Doing some hard graft.
33:01I'm excited for it.
33:05I hope it happens quicker than this glue's on this mirror, though.
33:09Because it still feels loose and I'm worried.
33:11I've got people checking in soon.
33:14I'm like, hi, sorry, if you just want to put your bags there, I'm just going to stand here while
33:17this sticks to the mirror.
33:19Right, this is the moment of truth.
33:28It's on.
33:29There you go.
33:31Dance glue.
33:32Solves all your problems.
33:35I'm happy with that.
33:40Oh!
33:57Having an extra pair of hands this year means that we can run the lambing season in shifts.
34:04Morning, Josh.
34:05Morning, mate.
34:06And farmhand Josh is coming to the end of his night shift.
34:10I believe we've had a busy morning, have we?
34:12Yeah, four, four this morning.
34:15Come out at quarter to eight and they all had one at foot.
34:20And by the time I sorted a single hour, I come back and there was at least three pens.
34:26Running out of space.
34:27Running out of space.
34:28Was everything all right?
34:29Yeah, everything's fine.
34:31Everything lambed itself.
34:32Didn't have to intervene anywhere.
34:33It's good that they're lambing themselves now because I get back from the school run and Josh tells me I've
34:38missed all the action.
34:38There's been four that lambed.
34:41Yeah, for triplets, they're pretty big.
34:45They're all the same size, aren't they, as well?
34:47They're all similar size, which is good.
34:49But yeah, they're looking, they're doing well.
34:51They are doing well.
34:52What have we got?
34:53We've got two tups and a ewe.
34:56You'll see any lamb that's got a little blue stripe on its shoulder, that's to visually mark it as a
35:02tup lamb, just so that we know.
35:04How are we at with ratios?
35:06Are we still more ewe lambs than males?
35:08I think the tups have just beaten this morning.
35:12Oh, right, OK.
35:15Which is good.
35:16In previous years, we've been like more 70-30, you know, in the favour of tups.
35:23Whereas this year, up to now, it's a little bit more balanced.
35:27More ewe's means we can increase our breeding stock, while the buoys or tups will be fattened up and sold
35:32for meat.
35:34This year, we're not castrating anything, so all the male lambs are remaining intact in all their glory.
35:44And we're going to see if that has an impact on the growth rate.
35:48Hopefully, that'll allow them to grow a little bit quicker.
35:54We'll see.
35:54Bit of an experiment this year.
35:58Every year, we make small tweaks and changes that we hope will have a big impact.
36:05And if not castrating the tups means they grow faster, we'll be able to get them to market quicker.
36:11So, full pen.
36:12How many pens have we got up now?
36:13We've got 16 pens, have we?
36:15Three, six, nine.
36:17Three, six, nine.
36:18Eighteen.
36:18Eighteen pens.
36:20So, we've got 18 ewes in here with lambs at foot.
36:23We've got another 11 on the hill.
36:26Yeah, 11 up there.
36:2711 up there with lambs at foot.
36:30So, yeah, 29 ewes.
36:34Just approaching the 30 mark.
36:36Just under halfway.
36:37The pens are bursting at the seams.
36:40So, as well, we need to get them out so that we can get the ones that are lambing in
36:44the pens now.
36:45It's a real sort of changeover system.
36:48The system is working well, and by keeping the ewes in the barn, we can keep a close eye out
36:54for any that might need a helping hand.
36:57Oh, I'm not going to have to draw yet.
37:05Look, that count.
37:07We did it.
37:20Yeah, she was really pushing and pushing there, and sometimes when they're set down, if they stand up, it helps
37:26the lamb kind of fall out a little bit.
37:28So, oh, here we go.
37:29She's got another one to go, and it just looks like it'll be any minute now.
37:35Here we go.
37:38That happened quick.
37:39There you go.
37:40There's lambs under my legs.
37:42There you go, wicker.
37:43Boy.
37:44Come on, you lick.
37:47Oh.
37:49Two little lambs.
37:50Here you go.
37:51And that happened really quickly.
37:54Really nice, smooth birth there.
37:56So, when the lamb comes out, when they're in the bag, that's when you just want to break that so
38:02that they can take in their sort of first breath and breathe, and then she'll lick them.
38:05So, that is quite a quick moment to release them out of the water bag, really.
38:11But really, really good.
38:12Really smooth.
38:14Happy mum and happy lambs.
38:18Two more healthy beauties to add to our tally, and one has a rather distinctive feature.
38:25So, this little lamb here has got a black leg, which wouldn't happen if that lamb's dad was our clint,
38:34because the clint is an all-white tub.
38:37And it will mean that that lamb with the black leg, it's dad is one of our Jacobs.
38:43So, the ewe can get in lamb with one tub, and then on the next cycle, get in lamb with
38:49the second tub.
38:50So, if they have twins, they can have two separate dads, which takes some explaining to do, doesn't it?
38:57They're nice lambs, aren't they?
38:59Yeah.
38:59Again, good size, and good size.
39:05Come on.
39:06Go on, girl.
39:07Go on.
39:08By the end of next week, lambing will be done, and we get to catch our breath before we look
39:14ahead to the rest of the season.
39:32Our woodland covers almost 40 acres of our farm, and it's a big part of why we fell in love
39:38with this place.
39:39We all relish the chance to explore this untouched natural habitat.
39:43I've really dreamt about days like today, because the twins are four now, and we've just hit a sweet spot
39:50with them,
39:51where we used to have the pram, or, you know, the double buggy, and you'd be pushing the double buggy
39:55down here,
39:56or the baby carriers, and they wouldn't want to be in it, they'd want to crawl and walk.
39:59And now, they're getting so independent.
40:02It's so nice to see them just out and exploring.
40:05I think it makes them so happy.
40:08Put the toilet.
40:09No.
40:10For hand-in.
40:11Put the toilet.
40:13Bring the toilet.
40:15Thank you for stealing my toilet.
40:17Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
40:19With our cade lambing tall and a picnic packed, who knows where today's adventure will take us?
40:26Whenever we get overwhelmed or things just feel, you know, they're feeling frustrated or things, you know, family life, it
40:34can get busy and full.
40:35And our answer to that is, get outside.
40:38It just helps you kind of reset.
40:41I totally believe in it.
40:43Thank you.
40:45Right, guys, I'm going to explore.
40:47Wait for us.
40:49There's an impressive and seemingly endless woodland that runs along the edge of our farmland here in Cheshire.
40:57Ancient oaks, birch and ash trees run across the rolling hills.
41:02And around them, modern trees have been planted by past custodians of the land.
41:09Between the canopy and the woodland floor, nature thrives.
41:15Oh, there.
41:16Guys, deer, deer.
41:17Up there.
41:18Look how many there are.
41:20Oh, my God, there's loads.
41:22Oh, look.
41:23They're all coming.
41:24Oh, my gosh.
41:26That must be their day.
41:27Look, guys, keep watching.
41:30Wait, what about the deer?
41:31Wow.
41:32God, there's so many of them.
41:35Even a fleeting glimpse of deer in their natural habitat feels special.
41:40Wow.
41:41I've never seen so many.
41:43I think six is the most we've seen.
41:45Yeah, that's the most I've ever seen.
41:48And as we walk deeper into the woodland, nature reveals more wonders.
41:54Wow, look at all them.
41:58Do you know what these flowers are called, Max?
42:01Bluebells.
42:02Bluebells.
42:06Don't tell anybody, but I can make quite a bit of my own.
42:11Liz has actually never been to this part of the farm.
42:15Because I'm a bit of a geek, I genuinely don't think there's a blade of grass I've not seen on
42:22this farm.
42:23Across a full 120 acres.
42:25I'm so obsessed with it.
42:27I'm so in awe of it, so proud of it, like, that it's just our little piece of the world.
42:35So many a time I've sat here, and you can just hear the birds.
42:42If you're lucky enough to see deer, just take it in.
42:48I came here with the kids the other night, straight from school.
42:51Liz was out.
42:51I was like, kids, right, we're going.
42:53Exploring.
42:53Let's go.
42:56And we had an amazing time.
42:59One, two, three, go!
43:01Kids are very capable.
43:04But Liz is, as I'm sure, maybe it's a motherly instinct, that she's panicking around.
43:14I just don't really panic.
43:15It is what it is.
43:17With Liz and the kids off exploring, I hang back and soak up the beauty of our home.
43:24What a spot.
43:27This is one of those many moments when you think, yeah, it's worth it.
43:34It's absolutely worth it.
43:40You've got to take it in.
43:42You know, this is what you're working for.
43:44It's this little moment.
43:45It's these little occasions.
43:47So you've got to enjoy it.
43:49Take it in.
43:55Have you ever been here, babe?
43:57I've never been to this bit.
43:59It's so special, especially having the kids with us and just exploring and just seeing the beauty that nature gives
44:04you.
44:05And nothing will ever give you more than nature does, will it?
44:10I've never done this with a lamb before.
44:13If you could be any animal in the world, what would you do?
44:18A deer?
44:19A lion.
44:20A lion, OK.
44:21Mateus, if you could be any animal, what would you be and why?
44:26A lamb.
44:27A lamb.
44:29Maximus?
44:31A sheep.
44:32A sheep?
44:33Why would you be a sheep?
44:35Because I don't want.
44:37No.
44:38Because I have one.
44:40Oh, right.
44:41Mummy?
44:42I take a bottomless.
44:44A pop of this.
44:45A pop of this.
44:48What would you be?
44:49No, a hyena.
44:51A hyena.
44:52A hyena.
44:54No, I would be, I'll be a little bunny rabbit.
44:56I'll be a little bunny rabbit.
44:57What the hell?
44:58Why?
45:00So that I could just get under the ground and chill.
45:02What would I be?
45:03You know what I would like to be?
45:05A sloth.
45:07And then I could just sleep all day, every day.
45:12No matter how often we get to explore together, each time we do, it's still so special.
45:24Next time on our farm.
45:27Our parenting is under pressure when faced with questions about the birds and the bees.
45:32What if he asked how would you get the semen out?
45:34That was my worry.
45:36I'll say I don't know you now.
45:37They just put it in the post.
45:41The farmhouse clear-out reveals a whole new wardrobe I've forgotten I had.
45:46Why did you throw that in this tip?
45:48I've never seen you wear them.
45:50Well, you should have thrown it in this tip.
45:52They'll just clean up.
45:52Well, you'll have to get back in here and get it out.
45:55And with a Cheshire show on the horizon, Marnie wants to enter young Hope.
45:59Who isn't that impressed?
46:02Come on.
46:03You're not dead.
46:04Your eyes are open.
46:06And you're still breathing.
