00:00When people talk about data centers in space, almost always the same objection comes up.
00:06That sounds nice, but you can't really cool things in space.
00:09And this is exactly where the real misunderstanding begins.
00:13Because cooling doesn't mean that air is blowing somewhere.
00:17Cooling means that heat leaves a place.
00:20It has exactly one escape route, radiation.
00:24Not convection, not evaporation, but electromagnetic radiation in the infrared range, according to the Stefan-Boltzmann law.
00:32On Earth, we make cooling complicated.
00:35Because we have to.
00:37Data centers consume gigantic amounts of electricity, and almost all of the electrical power ultimately turns into waste heat.
00:44This heat is moved with air, carried away with water, or removed through evaporation.
00:51That's exactly why modern data centers are often located next to rivers or lakes.
00:56And that's exactly why they are increasingly coming into conflict with communities, agriculture, and environmental authorities.
