00:00KFH.
00:03And now, digging deeper with the teams you follow, it's another Sports Daily Insider interview on KFH.
00:13Welcome back in, everybody.
00:15Appreciate everybody listening the old school way on the radio, the Odyssey app, everybody watching us on 12 News Connected
00:21as well.
00:22Josh Briscoe giving you the wave right there.
00:25Brady Bowman along with TJ Cleland.
00:27And, well, happy Tuesday.
00:30Mr. Briscoe, how are we feeling today?
00:31I feel great, man.
00:33Look, the Chiefs are 4-0.
00:34Nothing's ever perfect in the NFL, but it can be a whole lot worse than being undefeated.
00:40Obviously, I'm sure we'll get to it, but a really sad exclamation point on that game with Tyquan Thornton's injury.
00:47But other than that, a lot of things, I think, to feel pretty good about.
00:49Plus, the weather's beautiful right now.
00:51It won't last.
00:53We're getting our second summer here in a little bit.
00:54By the time second summer arrives, I'm going to have a functioning air conditioner again, which I don't right now.
01:00So, hey, we are going to make it, fellas.
01:02We're going to make it.
01:03We already had our weather segment in the show that we have the first 15 minutes.
01:06So, feel free to join for our small talk whenever you want to hop in and tell us how the
01:10weather is in Kansas City.
01:11I'll be on at 9 next time.
01:12Yeah, that sounds great.
01:13Let's get to the good stuff, Josh.
01:14Josh, is Tyreek Hill at the Cheesecake Factory on the Plaza?
01:19Ridley, I think he's at Joe's and Arthur Bryant's and Gates's.
01:22At the same time.
01:23Wow.
01:23Yeah, I don't know.
01:24He's doing...
01:25He is fast.
01:26He's fast, and I actually have for a friend's birthday the last couple of years.
01:30We've done something called the Barbecue Crawl, where we go to different barbecue restaurants,
01:33and by the end, I mean, we are just in physical disaster by the time that that adventure ends.
01:39Look, I haven't seen Tyreek Hill.
01:41He's not hiding in my backyard or in my basement or anything, but it does seem like the reunion
01:46makes a ton of sense.
01:47I'm sure we've talked about his name a few times in the last several weeks or other times
01:52during the offseason.
01:53It always felt like a reunion could make sense, depending on how guys like Cyrus Allen got involved
02:00and how healthy the top three were able to stay.
02:02Well, now we're here a couple days after losing Taequann Thornton for at least the vast majority
02:07of the rest of the season, and maybe losing Rasheed Rice for a little bit.
02:10I don't think Tyreek Hill is probably going to return to the field before Rasheed Rice
02:14does, for the record.
02:15But now it's gone from feeling like a 50% to 60% chance of a reunion to like 90%.
02:23Like something would have to go wrong.
02:25And I don't think it would make sense, even for an extra million or two dollars, for him
02:29to go to Green Bay or something, when I think the best chance for Tyreek to kind of rehabilitate,
02:36not necessarily like his image or who he is as a receiver, but just to show that he's
02:39healthy and to hit free agency next year for another payday, that's the time to get paid
02:44again.
02:45The 10 weeks or so that he could suit up this season, that's for showing the league
02:50that you're still, you know, Tyreek Hill.
02:53So I think that it still makes a ton of sense now, even more sense for both sides.
02:57Josh Briscoe, our Chiefs insider, joining us, part of Chiefs Radio Network.
03:02And we've got so much to talk about.
03:05TJ will be back with us here in just a second.
03:07But, you know, going along with that, there is some good news when it comes to Rasheed Rice.
03:11Ian Rappaport of the NFL Network is reporting that now calling it a relatively minor injury
03:17and that went over to Raiders and could be ready to play following the Chiefs week five by.
03:23So that's, that's good news for the Chiefs, but, you know, going with what we're talking
03:27about, sticking with Tyreek Hill, Josh, that reunion, we've been talking about it going
03:32into the off season.
03:33So this isn't like a suddenly new discussion point because of that injury to Thornton.
03:38But when it comes to, when it comes to the likeliness, it seems very, very likely.
03:44We got that report from Adam Schefter yesterday that Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for Tyreek Hill
03:49is saying that a signing with a new team could be basically any day now.
03:53I mean, it could happen right now.
03:54Who knows?
03:55If it happens, we'll air that breaking news sounder and let you know.
03:59But we do know, Josh, that there are still some question marks.
04:04One, we know that even if Tyreek Hill is signed right now, his health has returned to looking
04:11like November anyway.
04:12That's what's kind of been said is that November would be when he'd probably be healthy enough
04:15to play anyway.
04:16So there's still some things to figure out between now and then.
04:20And plus, we don't know exactly how much back Tyreek Hill is at that speed, which is such
04:24a crucial, crucial part of his game, is still there.
04:28So in the meantime, especially with the good news now here with Rasheed Rice, that he might
04:34be back a little bit sooner rather than later.
04:37How do we feel about Xavier Worthy?
04:39I thought he had stepped up a little bit in that Raiders win and had some good catches.
04:43Where does the pressure fall now?
04:45Is it Worthy?
04:46Does he happen to be the guy to step up?
04:48Yeah, I think he does.
04:50I mean, I do think that whenever Rice comes back, he's got to be the volume guy either
04:54way.
04:54But you did see Worthy have a really nice contested catch against the Raiders.
04:58And I think trying to figure out, and look, I know we talked about him last week as sort
05:03of a negative of the first three weeks of the season and saying, well, is Xavier Worthy
05:06going to be in a position where he can take advantage of the opportunity?
05:09What can his role be?
05:11Are the Chiefs designing an offense?
05:13Not the entire offense, obviously, but are they designing concepts for him where he's
05:17the number one target?
05:18Or is he going to be relegated to a lesser role where you just try to go be fast, demand
05:23some safety attention, and try to keep the offense on time?
05:26I think at this point, Xavier Worthy has to be a weapon.
05:29He can't just be a decoy with the straight line speed and everything.
05:34So the next question becomes, like, can he handle that?
05:38And that's something that we're just going to find out against the Chargers and Seahawks
05:41and maybe in the Broncos rematch.
05:43It does feel like after originally being kind of a tough draw to have this super early week
05:48five bye, it does now feel like it probably arrived at about the right time, both to give
05:53Rice a day off, a week off, you know, and to continue getting worked back for maybe Josh
05:58Simmons to have a week where you're not missing him for another game.
06:02I don't have any idea if he'll be back with a bulging disc for that Chargers game, but
06:06you give him an extra week.
06:07And then it also, I do think, provides you a few extra days for this coaching staff to
06:11say, OK, well, let's prepare for the Chargers.
06:14What's the offense going to look like without either Rishi Rice or Taequann Thornton?
06:18What does it take for Cyrus Allen to get a little more involved?
06:21I've always thought that it would be a later season revelation for Allen if he gets involved.
06:25That's typically how Chiefs rookie wide receivers have started to ramp up later in the year.
06:30Well, your bye week comes early.
06:32Is Cyrus Allen as smart and as ready to go as we were led to believe in training camp?
06:37I think we'll find out at Arrowhead against the Chargers here in a couple of weeks.
06:41But ultimately, a good time for the bye and Rishi Rice's health now becomes extraordinarily
06:47important.
06:47He was already super, super important.
06:49But now you can't afford another loss, even if you do reunite with Harry Kill.
06:53So we are, you know, today we're going to try to dig through the best 4-0 teams and the
06:58worst 0-4 teams, right?
06:59Like, what does that look like going forward?
07:01You know, as we talk about the Chiefs and therefore, I think it begs the question of
07:05how good were the Raiders, right?
07:07I think that the Raiders, as we talked about last week, this is the best that we've seen
07:11the Raiders in half a decade probably, right?
07:13I think that's a team that could flirt with the playoffs.
07:16Let's start there.
07:17How good were the Raiders, Josh?
07:18Josh, legitimately good.
07:20Not great, but also, I count on one hand and maybe one finger and maybe no fingers how
07:26many great teams are in the league right now.
07:28I think the Raiders, I think I said last week, you know, if the Raiders are on the in-the
07:33-hunt
07:33graphic for the playoffs in December, that is a hugely successful season for them.
07:38I think they're going to be.
07:39That is clarified to me after that Chiefs game.
07:43Not that they're going to be an unstoppable force, but that even if it's Kirk Cousins for
07:46all 17 games or if Mendoza steps up either due to injury or just wanting to see him later
07:51in the season, the defense is too good to take lightly.
07:54And to be clear, we did it.
07:56You know, we agreed on this going in the Chiefs Raiders, but being able to see the depth
08:00of their pass rushers, the fact that they did rejuvenate their defense with some free
08:04agent signings this offseason, and that you can build an offense out of Brock Bowers and
08:08you don't need superstar wide receivers.
08:11You can still have matchup problems with Michael Mayer and Ashton Jinty being able to kind
08:16of force defenses to respect them differently, even while you're playing with one of the
08:20thinner wide receiver rooms in football.
08:23In a sport right now where I think a lot of teams are, you know, a shrug emoji, if you
08:29will, a lot of teams are in any given Sunday team.
08:32The Raiders are one of those perhaps 15 or 20 teams that I think, oh yeah, they could be
08:39a playoff team and they could lose three games in a row at a rough stretch.
08:43But again, I think that applies to the majority of teams in football right now.
08:47So as we try to dig through that, right, I think that the, you know, the Raiders scored
08:5127 points.
08:52It's kind of the same thing we said about the Colts, the Colts game, right?
08:54Is that, was the offense good or was the Chiefs defense bad?
08:59And so it feels like we're not back to quite the, you know, 2017 Chiefs, right?
09:05You know, throw the year out there that you want to.
09:06You have to score 50 to go win, but they're going to have to outscore teams.
09:11Is that what you think happened in that game?
09:14Yeah.
09:14And I do think, look, they haven't had a sack in three games.
09:17That's not ideal.
09:18They did hurry and hit Kirk Cousins quite frequently.
09:22George Karloftis had a really nice game despite not ever actually getting to bring Cousins down.
09:26I think R. Mason Thomas also, you just see it.
09:29Now, look, the first 80% might be just as difficult as the next 20% of becoming a really
09:37excellent
09:38player at the NFL level, but R. Mason Thomas seems to have the first 80%.
09:41The physical tools, the speed, all of that, it is evident by just watching him rush the
09:46passer.
09:47Now, can you take the steps you need to be a high-level, consistent NFL defensive end?
09:52There's still work to do there, but I've been very impressed by him.
09:55So I do think that the defense still has room to grow, and not just like they're not very
10:00good right now.
10:01Like, I think they will grow as the season goes on.
10:03Monsor Delane has been excellent, but he's basically played two games now.
10:07Noel Williams has been very, very good.
10:10I think one penalty was legit on him on Sunday and one, the roughing, unnecessary roughness.
10:14It wasn't helmet-to-helmet.
10:15They didn't call helmet-to-helmet.
10:16I digress.
10:17I always expected coming into this year that the defense would have some growing pains early
10:22on because it has so many young pieces.
10:24So I stand by that.
10:26And then on the offensive side, I thought the most interesting thing Mahomes said post-game
10:30on Sunday was when he said, look, we have the explosive plays.
10:34Like, that's a part of our game that we have.
10:36Now we need the consistency.
10:37We need the down-to-down consistency.
10:39We need to avoid the three and outs.
10:41And I thought that was fascinating because that's the exact opposite problem is what they've
10:44had these last couple of years.
10:46They have not had the explosiveness.
10:48They have had generally, two years ago, great down-to-down consistency.
10:52But it's a lot of Kareem Hunt, three and a half yards in a cloud of dust.
10:56That's enough to move the sticks.
10:58They have the top gear now that makes them an incredibly deadly offense.
11:04Now, again, without Thornton, it's going to be a little bit of a difference, but maybe
11:07more than a little bit to give him appropriate credit.
11:09He's been great this year.
11:10But I think they have the explosiveness, and I just trust that a Patrick Mahomes, Andy
11:15Reed, Eric Bien-Ami, Travis Kelsey operation is going to be able to get the consistency
11:21where they need it to be.
11:22They've done the hard part.
11:23The explosiveness, that's the rare thing, and they've shown that they have that in spades.
11:27Josh Briscoe, Chiefs Radio Network, KC Sports Network, our Chiefs Insider, joining us on
11:33this Tuesday edition of Sports Daily on KFH.
11:37And I can't believe it's taken us this long to mention this name, Kenneth Walker.
11:41He is leading the league in rushing yards, 537.
11:45That's over the 494 that Bajon Robinson has so far, and Bajon's just been tearing it up
11:51the last couple of games.
11:52But 134 yards per game for Kenneth Walker, that's 12 more yards per game than Robinson.
12:01He has six runs of 20 yards or more.
12:06After that, the next best is four with Robinson and James Cook, and no fumbles for Kenneth Walker
12:12as well.
12:13He's been tearing it up.
12:15To me, he's the MVP favorite right now, and maybe have a running back as MVP for the first
12:21time since 2000 with the Seahawks' Sean Alexander.
12:24He's reminding me of that because big runs from Sean Alexander, home run hits.
12:29Josh, where would the Chiefs be 4-0 without Kenneth Walker?
12:33No.
12:34I think Emmitt Johnson would, in an alternate reality, where Emmitt Johnson just running back
12:38won.
12:38I think that he would be looking pretty good right now.
12:41But I think, look, a running back's almost certainly not going to win MVP.
12:45As you mentioned, it's been 26 years or whatever, and it's very hard to do that.
12:49But he's the offensive player of the year right now without much argument.
12:53I think he has to be, as things stand, four weeks in.
12:58I don't think they're undefeated without him because, again, when we talk about those explosive
13:02plays, Kareem Hunt was consistent and great in short yardage and was almost always going
13:07to get you three or four yards.
13:09Kenneth Walker has the ability to, as we saw on Sunday, to take one for 76.
13:14Like, he has home run potential at the running back position that is so incredibly hard to
13:20find.
13:20And this is something I've been talking about these last couple of days to try to put it
13:24in proper context.
13:25One of the, like, asterisks on Kenneth Walker's free agent report card, if you will, was that
13:32in Seattle, there were some instances where he would be kind of big play hunting or trying
13:36to bounce a run to the outside.
13:38And sometimes it would be a home run, and sometimes it would be a loss of two or three yards.
13:42And you go, ah, well, if he had just hit the hole there, maybe you gain three instead of
13:46losing three.
13:47A little bit of boom or bust for Kenneth Walker.
13:50There's been none of that in Kansas City.
13:52None.
13:52It has just been boom, boom, boom, boom.
13:54And home run after home run after home run.
13:56And his, whatever, that 21-yard run was where, shout out to Dante Hall, he looked like a human
14:02joystick.
14:02I mean, he is moving like a video game character, and he has been so consistent in that through
14:09four weeks.
14:09I think we're all probably a little bit worried about the workload.
14:12You want him to look as spry and as explosive in January as he has in September and early
14:18October.
14:18But it's really hard to overstate how unbelievable he's been.
14:23Where, again, I think I understood the logic of signing him in free agency.
14:27I saw the vision of how this could all come together to kind of give this offense a jolt at
14:33the running back position it hasn't had in quite some time.
14:35I don't know if the biggest Kenneth Walker fan in the world, if the biggest Chiefs optimist
14:41in the world could have set the expectations high enough for what he's done through four
14:46weeks.
14:46He's been unbelievable.
14:48I think I saw that your pal Nate Taylor said that he was worth every penny, and he also
14:53might be underpaid, actually, because of everything that he brings to the team.
14:56It's unbelievable.
14:58So I know you guys talked about Tyree Kill stuff, and it's fascinating, and it feels
15:02like we're back into the end of the season last year of how do you fix this team mode,
15:08right?
15:08And you put the V-chat on.
15:10What would you trade for Marvin Harrison Jr.?
15:12I would be very curious to know where the Cardinals are at on him.
15:16I would be willing to give something up.
15:19I don't know.
15:19Could you get him for...
15:22A reclamation third is probably not enough for them to part with him.
15:26I feel like they might try to hold for a second, and I don't know if any team's going to
15:30give
15:30that up for him right now, because you're thinking, you know, the Chiefs obviously had
15:34a high second-round pick this year, but it's like, well, I wouldn't give up R. Mason Thomas
15:37for him.
15:37That's kind of a tough pill to swallow.
15:39And so I think you just are probably going to need to continue monitoring that one until
15:44really close to the deadline.
15:45And then you get to say, hey, you know, Arizona, you're not even the regime that drafted him.
15:49It's been really tough sledding for him so far.
15:52Let's do a little change of scenery kind of trade, and you give us a discount.
15:57If I was Brett Veach, I would be calling all of those teams with all of those receivers.
16:02And again, like I would, you know, we could probably talk about this this offseason.
16:05I would have loved Stefan Diggs or Juwan Jennings to try to insulate this group a little bit
16:09so you don't have to make a move like this in season.
16:12I think Tyree kills the most likely.
16:14It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Juju Smith-Schuster or maybe you call Justin Watson
16:20back.
16:20He can do the Tyquan Thornton role.
16:23Did Justin Watson play football last year?
16:26When was the last time we saw him?
16:27It's been a minute, and you haven't seen him do a whole lot.
16:30He was in Houston for a little while.
16:32That's right.
16:33That's right.
16:33Again, like not exactly lighting it up, but if you know the offense well enough that you
16:37can demand that the safeties like pay attention to you, and then once a game, you drag two
16:43toenails on the sideline and make an incredible catch, and you're like, wow, this guy's a
16:47Hall of Famer, and then he doesn't see the ball for three more weeks.
16:50Yeah, it was Houston last year.
16:51He played in three games.
16:52Did he play?
16:53Okay.
16:53But barely.
16:54I mean, he had three catches last year.
16:57So we're just talking about like putting bodies out there of guys who can fill the role, but
17:02I don't think that, you know, Jalen Royals doesn't have the speed for that.
17:05Cyrus Allen just got here, so I do, and obviously like Juju is a totally different type of player
17:10as well.
17:11I don't know if McCole Hardman makes a lot of sense, but I think it's going to be bargain
17:14bin until you hear around the deadline, maybe you're willing to move on one of these other
17:19receivers, but then, you know, they brought in DeAndrea Hopkins midseason, who has as much
17:26NFL experience as anybody, and even then, he was involved.
17:29I don't want to say that he like never played once they got him, but the fit never really
17:33came together, and so I just, I'm a little bit hesitant about, not even hesitant, I'm
17:38a little pessimistic, I guess, about the in-season addition, which is why I would have been more
17:42aggressive about the wide receiver position this offseason, but if you spend more money
17:46on wide receiver, maybe Kenneth Walker's not here, and that's not a, the value that Walker's
17:50brought per dollar to your point a second ago, outrageous production there.
17:54I would have loved to have drafted a wide receiver earlier, but I don't think you want
17:58to see this defense without Mansoor Delaney and Peter Woods and our Mason Thomas, both
18:02this year and for the next few years, so it just feels like a resource allocation game,
18:06and if I could, if I could get Marvin Harrison Jr. from the Colt, from the Cardinals for a
18:11fourth round pick in a few weeks, I'd do it in a heartbeat, I just, when you have a guy
18:16that might demand a better price if you could sell a little higher, you don't want to be
18:20the Cardinals there selling low on a guy that you spent a super premium pick on not very
18:24long ago.
18:25Josh, we have about 30 seconds left, we talked about Tyree Kill, if they added him, he still
18:29might not play for another month, will there be another move this week, do they have to
18:33go get somebody before they play the Chargers?
18:35I, I will say that they probably reunite with a familiar face, one of those vets who's been
18:39here before, before that Chargers game.
18:41If I had to put a nickel down on it right now, that's what I'd lean towards, but they've
18:45given a little more work to Jalen Royals, maybe Cyrus Allen steps up after the buy.
18:48There we go, Josh Briscoe, great stuff as always, appreciate your time sir, we'll talk
18:54some MLB playoffs when we're back, keep you here on Sports Daily.
