00:00The other part of Ohio State, too, that I keep watching, you know, each and every game is Jeremiah Smith.
00:08And, you know, we've been watching him for now.
00:09I can't imagine why he'd watch that guy.
00:11I can't imagine what Ohio State's...
00:12I think the bigger reason why is I can't imagine what Ohio State's offense would look like without Jeremiah Smith
00:20right now.
00:21And his numbers are just insane.
00:24They're insane.
00:25And it's just, it's, you look at it and you say, well, okay, where does he rank, you know?
00:30And if he played five years at Ohio State, he would shatter every receiving record in, like, NCAA history.
00:39And he probably would have the chance to grab three Heisman trophies if he stayed all five years to play
00:45now.
00:45And that still sounds weird to say, play five years.
00:48This is year number three, correct?
00:49Yes.
00:50And so, and he'll be, there's no way he's coming back after this year.
00:52I don't think, I don't know anybody.
00:53I don't know anybody.
00:55Oh, no, young man.
00:55I don't know anybody that thinks he is coming back.
00:57Go to the money, young man.
00:59Go to the money.
01:00Why would you not?
01:01The stat that, and again, he broke more records over the weekend, you know, in receiving and touchdowns.
01:09And so, the thing to me that just kind of blew me away was I started looking at his numbers
01:14because a lot of times Ohio State's got the lead in the second half and they're just, they're not going
01:17to play him anymore.
01:18Right?
01:20Or they're going to minimize his role.
01:22Yeah, they want to give other guys a chance to play.
01:23So, if you look at his first half, the majority of his statistics are from the first and second quarter.
01:3235 of his 44 catches, first or second quarter.
01:36612 of his 823 yards, first or second quarter.
01:40Seven of his nine touchdowns this year have all come in the first half.
01:46So, not only is he doing this in record time to break, you know, to break all the Ohio State
01:52records, to be the leader in those categories,
01:54he's also doing it in limited time.
01:58I mean, imagine if they played him the whole game.
02:00Imagine what the scores would be in some of this.
02:02Imagine how many more catches he would have and where he would end up.
02:05Now, I was also looking up some numbers this morning about him being, you know, up there in NCAA all
02:12-time receiving yards.
02:14And that mark is owned by Western Michigan's Corey Davis.
02:185,285 yards.
02:20He did it back in 2016.
02:23And then ended up in Tennessee and ended up not having an NFL career that anybody thought was going to
02:29be as good as it was going to be.
02:30That is correct.
02:31Played for the Jets too, I think.
02:33So, here's another interesting point about that.
02:35Davis, after his junior year, he played his senior year, right?
02:38After his junior year, he had 3,785 yards after his junior season.
02:43Smith already has 3,381 yards heading into this week's game against Maryland.
02:50So, if you were trying to get some kind of comparison, if Smith would have been able to break Davis'
02:55numbers,
02:56it seems pretty apparent that there's no doubt about it.
02:59Because Smith ended up, or Davis, sorry, Davis ended up with 1,500 yards in his senior year.
03:04So, Smith isn't going to see that senior year.
03:07So, you're trying to, I was trying to pace it to figure it out.
03:10And, you know, he's what, 400, not even 400, not maybe 300-some yards behind Davis.
03:17Now, just five games into the season where Davis ended his third-year play in the NCAA.
03:26What does this all mean?
03:27I don't know.
03:28Here's what it means to me.
03:29To me and Andy.
03:30It means there's no way you can't consider Jeremiah Smith for the first overall pick in the draft.
03:38I mean, so many times we've looked at it and said, well, you know, it's going to be a quarterback,
03:43it's going to be a quarterback.
03:44You've only had three wide receivers drafted first overall in NFL history.
03:49Dave Parks in 64 by the Niners, Irving Fryer, who had a great career in New England in 1984 out
04:00of Nebraska,
04:00and then Keyshawn, Keyshawn Johnson in 1996.
04:04It's been that long, too, since we've had a number one overall pick who was a wide receiver out of
04:09USC.
04:09I think everybody remembers, well, not everybody, but people of our stature, age,
04:15remember him playing in college a little bit.
04:16But I just, how do you pass on him with the number one pick because you need a quarterback?
04:24I just can't.
04:25I'll tell you how you do.
04:26There's just no way.
04:27I can't.
04:28I just can't.
04:28I'll tell you how you do.
04:29Okay.
04:31If your franchise has struggled to find a quarterback and you think you have good receivers
04:37and you'd like fill in the blank, I would say, in this case, Arch Manning.
04:44Now, in that situation, I can understand it.
04:46If you have a competent quarterback and he's under contract for a while, okay?
04:55Let's, for instance, let's say, I'll just throw out a name.
05:00Let's say you have C.J. Stroud.
05:01Okay.
05:04And I'm not saying this is Houston specific.
05:07A caliber of quarterback like C.J. Stroud.
05:10And you want to give him another weapon.
05:13Well, I would think you, without question, draft Jeremiah Smith, play C.J. Stroud,
05:18and don't take Arch Manning.
05:21You know what I mean?
05:22Right.
05:24That's, if you have a quarterback that you like and you think he's pretty good, without
05:30question, I'd take Jeremiah Smith.
05:33And if you have a quarterback need, there's no question to me that you better take the
05:40quarterback.
05:41Because as good as Jeremiah Smith is, he's not going to turn around your franchise.
05:47A quarterback could.
05:50And I say that, Andy, for instance, if I'm the Browns and I somehow ended up as the number
05:54one, with the number one pick in the draft, and I liked Arch Manning, I would take Arch
06:01Manning.
06:03Because I don't think the Browns have a quarterback for the future.
06:08Maybe they have one for next year.
06:10I don't know.
06:11I don't think they do.
06:13I'm trying to digest what you're saying here.
06:15Because you would think that if you had a, if you felt like you were a competent quarterback
06:20and, by the way, you would still need to be.
06:24If you had your quarterback, and without question, I think you'd take your Jeremiah Smith.
06:30If you had your quarterback.
06:31I don't even know that you have to have, just a middle of the road quarterback.
06:36Because you listen to what everybody says about Julian Sane, and now people are like, well,
06:40what Julian Sane isn't this, or Will Howard wasn't this or that.
06:43But yet, look at how the numbers have played out.
06:46Smith has been an NFL wide receiver in college football and plays like one now.
06:54Watch the catches.
06:55One foot here.
06:55Tiptoe there.
06:56Andy is phenomenal.
06:57I mean, he doesn't need, like, the transition between one foot, two foot doesn't mean anything
07:02to him.
07:02One arm, two arm.
07:04Two hands, one arm.
07:05Three fingers.
07:06He's catching the ball.
07:07To me, I think the other argument's going to be made, and I'm not going to make it here,
07:11but just that he could be one of the best players, if not the best player in Ohio State football
07:16history.
07:16Which sounds like blasphemy, except for when you say, well, Archie is, because of the numbers
07:21he put up on the ground, and to win two Heismans and to be able to do that.
07:24But that's just a matter of the sign of the times.
07:28Well, it's about productivity, too.
07:31It's really hard to say Archie isn't the guy.
07:35Oh, it's hard not to.
07:36It isn't.
07:36His productivity was through the roof.
07:38Right.
07:39But, you know, the claim to fame for Arch is only two-time Heisman Trophy winner.
07:44In the day and age of five and five, and right now, Smith is, again, this all depends on
07:49health, and, you know, of course, I'm putting the card before the horse, that, you know,
07:54he's, he's the, he has the highest odds by far to win the Heisman this year.
08:00You know, tell me if he didn't play all three years, he wouldn't, at least two years, he
08:03wouldn't have a chance to match Archie next year, but he's not going to.
08:07But that's not the way, yeah, that's not the way the system works anymore.
08:10No, but like Ring of Honor and stuff like that at Ohio State kind of works that way.
08:13But that's why I kind of, that's an argument for another day on another show.
08:16So I just, my question to you is, if you're sitting there at one, I don't know how you
08:21don't take the sure thing.
08:22Like, because the quarterback just seems like it.
08:25Because if you don't have a quarterback, you're not going anywhere.
08:27But how much of a quarterback do you need?
08:29That's what I'm saying.
08:29Do you need a franchise quarterback?
08:31Do you need an efficient quarterback that can just get him the ball?
08:34Well, when Kevin Stefanski was starting Cooper Rush in Atlanta, how'd that work out?
08:40All of a sudden, here comes competent Michael Penix.
08:44Boom, they're putting up points like crazy.
08:45So now you're making my point for me.
08:47I agree.
08:48No, but if you already have a competent quarterback, you don't need to go get Arch Manning.
08:52You can put the talent around him.
08:54Who's to say you couldn't get that competent quarterback in the same draft, though?
08:59If you were going to take him at one.
09:01If your team evaluates Arch Manning as a franchise quarterback who can play in the league for 12 years
09:07and you need a quarterback, you take him.
09:12Now, if you have other quarterbacks who you think, yeah, he's pretty good, that's not enough.
09:20To me, to pass up a guy like Jeremiah Smith, you have to think that your quarterback who you're going
09:25to take
09:25is going to be top-notch, absolute, upper-echelon quarterback, top 10.
09:32I mean, I know we talk about these quarterbacks once a week.
09:34Otherwise, you know, he had a great hood ornament on a Rambler.
09:40Pacer?
09:41Pacers are collector items now.
09:43If he was sitting there at number one and the Browns had the number one pick,
09:46even knowing the quarterback situation, I didn't make this question up like this at the end of this,
09:51but I'll ask it like this to both of you guys right now.
09:54All right, go ahead.
09:54If the Browns had the number one pick, okay, because the Rams had the worst season ever and we got
09:59that.
10:00Thank you, Rams.
10:01Rams are going whatever they are.
10:03Too bad Philly choked on us the other day.
10:04We could have used some help from them, but that's all right.
10:06So the Browns have the number one overall pick, and they're sitting there,
10:10and you know what the situation is with Deshaun probably being out.
10:14You're trying to figure out if Shadour was your number one or you knew you had to draft a quarterback,
10:19and there he is, Jeremiah Smith, is sitting there for the taking at number one,
10:23and you had the chance to take him.
10:26Knowing what we know about the quarterback situation now, would you take him?
10:302-1-6, 4-7-4, double-0-92.
10:33Jeff?
10:33No.
10:36It would depend on what I thought of the quarterbacks who were coming out.
10:39I don't think our team has a quarterback for the future.
10:42So if our team ended up with the number one pick, and my evaluators told me Arch Manning was going
10:48to be a big-time quarterback,
10:49I would take Arch Manning.
10:51And I would roll with a quarterback that I thought was really good and two wide receivers that I just
10:58drafted last year that I think are really good.
11:01And I think Jeremiah Smith's going to be a beast.
11:05I got a little thought for you when Dan was done.
11:08Okay, go ahead, Dar.
11:09I would also take a quarterback first overall rather than take Jeremiah Smith because I don't think the quarterback of
11:15the future is sitting on this roster.
11:17And this is my crack at it, and I'm taking it.
11:20Now, who that quarterback I would take is, I got a lot of runway to figure out.
11:24You got to figure that out.
11:25Right.
11:25Yep.
11:25Right now, I might lean toward Mensa, but I want to see him play against big-boy competition before I
11:32lock myself into that.
11:35You ready for my thought?
11:36No, I want to tell you mine first.
11:37I would take him at number one overall.
11:40No kidding.
11:41And I know, after I laid that out.
11:43I mean, I'm ready to say his name in the same as Archie Griffin.
11:47So, but.
11:49You already did.
11:50I know.
11:50I know.
11:51Which is great.
11:52And I think Archie would appreciate it, by the way.
11:53Jeremiah's a stud.
11:55He's so good.
11:56He is so good.
11:58How many, what is the difference in the quarterbacks that are coming out next year too?
12:03And could you get, I mean, you knew you clearly could get Smith right out of the gate.
12:09The next question is, is how far apart are those quarterbacks?
12:14And do you really believe one of those quarterbacks is a game changer for your franchise down the road?
12:21And that's why I just think, I think Smith is more of a shirt.
12:25And then could you imagine putting him in here with the two young receivers we have now?
12:28Oh my God.
12:30You just need a quarterback that just needs to get them the ball and an offensive line that can pass
12:36block.
12:36That's it.
12:37Your offense would be on fire.
12:38Do you think, do you think Jeremiah Smith as a pro could be as good as Calvin Johnson?
12:47It's hard.
12:48I like, I think Calvin Johnson's one of the best to ever line up as a wide receiver.
12:52So is that his ceiling?
12:54Yeah.
12:55That, that, I would say that if he could get to where Megatron was, you're there.
12:59Calvin Johnson played nine seasons in the national football league.
13:02Okay.
13:03His team had a winning record in two of those nine seasons.
13:07Okay.
13:08And that is far from Calvin Johnson's fault.
13:11Yes.
13:11I didn't say it was, but it just proves my point that you can have the best damn wide receiver
13:16maybe ever.
13:18And you're not necessarily guaranteed of winning football.
13:22And he had a good young quarterback named Matthew Stafford.
13:26Go back and look at that offensive line and those defensive.
13:28Stafford got rocked in his career.
13:31Trust me, I watched it.
13:32It's just my, it's just the point of, okay, you got a great wide receiver.
13:38Now what?
13:41It's interesting.
