00:11It's hard to believe it's been nearly two decades since the Hungaroring joined Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone, Monza, and all the
00:19other Formula One circuits.
00:20Hello, everyone. I'm Bob Varsha. Welcome to Friday practice for round 13 of the 2004 Formula One World Championship, the
00:29Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:31There's one Pablo Montoya being...
00:35...as we get set for a second one-hour practice live here on Speed Channel.
00:41All alongside, as always, David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:45We've already had one free practice session earlier today, and we'll give you a look at some of the highlights
00:50of that one hour of free running.
00:53There's a look at the old nose on the Williams, and here is the new one as the team abandons
01:00that tusked platypus-type nose.
01:03Although they keep the twin keels, it looks like Minardi has introduced an engine update this weekend.
01:08But I think those guys are going to wear out plenty of shoe leather, and the car hasn't gone any
01:12faster.
01:13I've seen Carlo Fischichella going off here at one of the high-speed right-handers, going right through the gravel
01:17trap, getting back on the track, bringing lots of gravel with him.
01:20Fischichella, of course, moving back to Renault next year.
01:23Then Michael Schumacher, after waiting a long time, Tyler with his bashing their brains out, went out.
01:28And on his first line lap was just a tad quicker than the others.
01:31Oh, two and a half seconds quicker than the others.
01:34Just a two and a half seconds.
01:35Then Montoya out in that new-look FW26.
01:38There's a nose perfectly positioned after that spin to stop the mechanics wanting to throttle him to death.
01:45It's a good job you have the asphalt there, because if you have the gravel, I think it would have
01:48been a much bigger accident than that.
01:50And there we're having an onboard with Ricardo Zantra and the Toyota.
01:56And during the session, we had a new entry.
02:01Renault did outperform Mark Webber's Jaguar.
02:05Next year's Williams driver did not go out.
02:08Heat shield problems on the exhaust of his Jaguar.
02:11Here's a look at the session one times.
02:13Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barichello, and the two Ferraris, remember, on Bridgestone tires that were so completely outclassed here last year.
02:20Anthony Davidson in the BAR, and everybody else a second and a half off that pace.
02:26Or even two and a quarter in the case of Montoya.
02:28Another guy on the move next year going to McLaren.
02:31There's Fischer Keller.
02:32We saw him bounce across the gravel.
02:34Everybody pretty close together there, except that they're all two and a half seconds slower than the Ferrari.
02:38Terrific performance by young Ryan Briscoe, an Australian who has moved up to the Friday third driver's spot,
02:44taking over for Ricardo Zanta, who has been moved up to the varsity, replacing Cristiano Damata.
02:50Who has been removed from his Toyota seat for good.
02:57Briscoe has an interesting history at this track, and we'll talk about it today since we won't be seeing him
03:02after the Friday session's finish.
03:03His grandfather, a man named Franz Lehner, an Austrian, raced in an Austrian, the Hungarian Grand Prix back in the
03:131920s in a two-seater Daimler-Benz.
03:18He eventually emigrated to Australia, and eventually wound up as Ryan Briscoe's grandfather.
03:27Now, Fischer Keller turning into the lap.
03:29Fischer Keller, this track is not universally applauded by either the drivers or other pundits, such as ourselves,
03:36but Fischer Keller said he absolutely loves it here.
03:38He said there's a lot of corners which you have to attack.
03:41It flows well from a driver's point of view.
03:43He said you need to be very mentally alert and physically alert,
03:46because it's obviously very hard work around here, because there are so many corners.
03:50And it's usually pretty hot.
03:52It was very sunny in that first session, but as you can see, the clouds are coming up,
03:55because a bit of rain is forecasted, as our guru weatherman, Bob, tells us.
04:00Rain due this weekend.
04:02Yes, we are told.
04:03Rain Saturday and Sunday.
04:05But there was also supposed to be rain today, and as you can see...
04:07Well, it might be rain today, but luckily, after we finish, probably.
04:11But Fischer Keller there, cranking out three very quick sectors,
04:14but deciding not to complete the lap.
04:17But that lap would have been well under 121,
04:19and, of course, last year's pole was a 121.6,
04:23so already the cars full.
04:2722.9 to kick things off for Michael Schumacher and Ferrari.
04:30Ferrari going for a record-setting 12th victory this season.
04:37And Ferrari, of course, can clinch its sixth consecutive constructors.
04:40Oh!
04:42Michael trying hard.
04:43Well, right where his brother spun last year on the Erkbe lap.
04:45I mean, to the yard.
04:47That will be note to self.
04:49Breaking point is one metre further back.
04:51Right, yes.
04:54But it's all very twisty, very whine in this track.
04:57That's really why the teams don't like it.
04:59Let's have another look at Michael.
05:00Well, again, this is what these Friday practice sessions are all about, though, chaps, isn't it?
05:04It's really getting the car set up
05:06and finding out exactly how far you can push the car into the corners.
05:11Yeah, and, of course, there's also a huge data collection day, isn't it,
05:14for tyre wear, fuel consumption, and all those other nuances
05:17that go into winning the Grand Prix.
05:19As far as engineering the cars around the Hungarion Ring, it's a little bit like Monaco.
05:24It's just a matter of cranking all the downforce on you've got.
05:27There's no subtlety there, just put the biggest whinge of car possible to create that downforce,
05:32and then try and get the mechanical grip.
05:34And you'll notice, as we see a lot of these super slowbo shots around here,
05:37how much the car is moving in roll and pitch it.
05:39They really are incredibly softly sprung.
05:41It's Fernando Alonso, defending champion of the race
05:45and still the youngest winner ever of a Formula One Grand Prix
05:48at less than 23 years of age.
05:5122 years, 245 days, I believe, is the number.
05:57And in the process, lapping one Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari.
06:02I mentioned Ferrari going for its sixth straight Constructors title,
06:06and as Steve Manchin has told us before,
06:09that is the title that these teams most want to win.
06:12There's the reason for the yellow flag.
06:14Jean-Marie Bruni.
06:15Boy, it is a surprise to see a Rinaldi off the track like that.
06:19Let's have a look at what it was.
06:20Swamp legs here.
06:22And this is the Fischkeller corner from this morning.
06:24Backs into the gravel, and unlike Fischkeller,
06:27ooh, gets it while I'm truly buried.
06:29That's where Christian Kleen went in there too in the Jaguar,
06:32which made things difficult for that team.
06:34I already mentioned Mark Webber didn't go out.
06:36Kleen threw the car off the road.
06:38So that left it to their third driver, Bjorn Vertheim,
06:42to help them with the data acquisition that Steve mentioned a moment ago.
06:47Well, that course is not going to help Jimmy Bruni's chances of qualifying.
06:51He's had a terrible season.
06:53He cannot run anymore today.
06:56So he may have to qualify towards the back of the grid.
06:58He's being outperformed by his teammate.
07:00He's been parking a perfectly useful car.
07:03The sponsor apparently is upset with him.
07:04And you notice that green patch on the engine box, the Superfund.
07:08That's a German financial services company that's been under investigation all over Europe.
07:14And there's some question about whether that sponsorship is going to continue.
07:19Jensen Button, what's new?
07:21Lots.
07:22We'll talk about that when we return.
07:24Live Speed Channel coverage of practice from Hungary.
07:28Speed Channel 1 Hungarian Grand Prix truck map is brought to you by Porsche.
07:33Porsche, there is no substitute.
07:39Welcome back to Friday practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
07:42Bob Barshan, David Hobbs, and Steve Matchett with you.
07:45Watching Anthony Davidson, who's done so much great work for BAR Honda this year.
07:49Made his debut in Formula 1 of this track a couple of years ago in a minority.
07:54Substituting for Malaysian Alex Jung.
07:57Rubens Barakello, whose Ferrari has been noticeably twitchy in the first session this morning.
08:03But he goes to P1 by nearly a half second.
08:05While we have a moment, let's go to our Porsche track map and take a closer look at the Hungaro
08:09ring.
08:10David?
08:11Well, as I said earlier, it's not everybody's favorite.
08:1314 turns.
08:13And as you can see from that map, some of them are mighty sharp.
08:1612, 13, 14, 1.
08:18A lot of mechanical grip required here and every bit of downpour you can put on the car.
08:22You rise up, turn forward to the quickest corner here.
08:25Sweeping left-hand, rising left-hander.
08:27Then 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.
08:29All really come on top of each other pretty quickly.
08:32Great for the crowd, though.
08:33They all sit to the left there on the race.
08:35The hill goes up, carries on going up there.
08:37So it's actually a pretty good viewing circuit for the spectateurs.
08:40But as you can see, pretty difficult to overtake.
08:43They made that turn 12 a different shape a couple of years ago to try and help that.
08:47Did it help?
08:47Well, this race has never been won from lower than 3rd on the grid, except Neuge, Nigel Mansell, who won
08:55from 12th on the grid.
08:571989 in the Ferrari.
08:58Boy, what a race that was.
09:01I can't get over this course.
09:02You guys have been doing the series for the last two years.
09:06I hadn't seen this track in a couple of seasons, and I'm amazed at how lush it looks.
09:11I mean, when we used to come here, it was just brown and dusty, and here it is looking lush
09:16and green, and they've done a lot of development over the years.
09:19That's a great shot, just a highlight that we saw there, with the hills in the background.
09:24Yeah, it is very green.
09:25The village of Mogherad there in the background.
09:27Oh, God, I knew you'd come out with that, because you can say it, nobody else can.
09:31Doesn't mean I'm saying it right.
09:32I have to say that if anybody's in the touring frame of mind, Budapest is a city that's definitely worth
09:37going to see.
09:38Bob and I went there a couple of free times in the Danube, and the city itself is fascinating.
09:43It really is a great spot to visit.
09:45We were lucky to go there back when the ravages of the old Iron Curtain days were still evident everywhere,
09:52including battle damage in the streets and some of the old buildings, and now it's all been cleaned up and
09:59developed, and it's fabulous.
10:00Well, it was the first time I went, and the old hammer and syclus flying over the couple of buildings,
10:04I remember.
10:07There's some of that super slow motion you were talking about, Steve.
10:10Yeah, you'll watch it.
10:11Look at the buildings on the cars.
10:12Of course, the car will slide anyway, even if it's very stiffly sprung, but we're not really looking at the
10:17car sliding.
10:18It's the way that it bounces.
10:21It's all about getting the mechanical grip, hooking up the tyres onto the track round here.
10:26The low-speed corners, and of course, it puts a lot of strain, lateral load onto the tyres as well.
10:31When you hit the throttle, it opens the throttle back up and put that 900 brake horsepower back through the
10:37tyres.
10:37Well, of course, the best way to get mechanical grip is, of course, through the tyres, and that's why lap
10:42times have dropped so severely the last couple of years.
10:45We're on board with Jenson Button, definitely the man of the moment, the pariah of the paddock, having swapped teams.
10:53Maybe not.
10:54I just can't imagine what the, I can't imagine what the B.A.R. boys looked at him like when
10:59he walked into the old paddock yesterday.
11:00Hi, guys.
11:01Everything going all right?
11:02If you haven't been following Formula One, the story is, shortly after the German Grand Prix, Jenson Button's manager called
11:10Sir Frank Williams and said,
11:12My man is available if you're interested.
11:14Sir Frank Williams, of course, said yes.
11:16A deal was struck, a contract was announced, and that came as a bolt of lightning to his current team,
11:22B.A.R. Honda,
11:22who figured they had taken up their option on Jenson and would have him for the 2005 season.
11:28So now, Button is holding alleged contracts with both B.A.R. Honda and BMW Williams for next year.
11:36It seems Button's management thinks that because Honda has an out clause in its ongoing contract with B.A.R.,
11:43that that is a violation of Jenson Button's contract with the team that dictates that he will always have Honda's
11:49best engines.
11:52That is what's called thin ice.
11:55Well, and it appears this one will get nasty.
11:58The lawyers have been called in.
12:00Don't be fooled by that one and a half second slow in Schumacher.
12:02These guys could be running pretty heavy fuel load at the moment or even a slightly harder tire compound.
12:08Push it a little bit through the corner.
12:09Look how bumpy it is there as they come off the new pavement.
12:14Well, for now, Jenson Button can concentrate on driving.
12:17We'll be back in just a moment.
12:23Welcome back to live Friday practice from the Hungarian Grand Prix.
12:27This is Nick Heidfeld in the Jordan.
12:29Along with Steve Machen and David Hobbs, I'm Bob Varsha.
12:32Rubens Batackello, the current session leader, at 122.172 seconds.
12:37Michael Schumacher in at a minute 22.334.
12:41Then David Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen.
12:43Mark Weber, Giancarlo Fisichella, Anthony Davidson, Fernando Malonzo, Takuma Sato,
12:48and Nick Heidfeld rounding out the top ten.
12:51Sato just moved up into ninth.
12:53Mark Weber, of course, has only done seven laps all day.
12:56He didn't go out at all this morning, so that time of his, a 1.23 flat,
13:00really is pretty good in just seven laps.
13:05Rumors swirling about whether, in fact, wide line there for...
13:09Chris Webber likes it here, too.
13:11He, uh, he qualified third last year and ran second for a long time,
13:14but was a lot, was a bit slow at the people behind him
13:17and held his huge train of cars up.
13:21There have been suggestions the Jordan team,
13:24or at least a majority shareholding in it,
13:26has been sold to the ruling family in the country of Dubai in the Middle East.
13:36Pablo Montoya running out the spring with Williams.
13:38Let's have a look at this Jordan chassis.
13:40There's a big bump coming up right there.
13:43It's that transition from the new tarmac that they've laid to the old.
13:46They haven't really had the tamp machine down enough there, have they really?
13:50Well, is it just a little elevation change between the surfaces,
13:53or is it that that black, the new surface, got a lot more grip
13:56and they suddenly lose the grip when they go onto the old hatch?
14:00I wouldn't discount that, what you say, David,
14:02because certainly the new generations of asphalt that they've been using
14:06around all the Formula One tracks have got a lot more grip
14:09and they also dissipate the water a lot better than the old asphalt version.
14:13And I'm sure that's the case of the old asphalt,
14:16the old tarmac around the Hungarro ring will be very low grip.
14:19It is very bumpy, you can see it there as the jag chassis bouncing up and down,
14:23but again, they are softly sprung, but nevertheless,
14:25a lot of ripples around this track.
14:28If it were actually to rain on this race,
14:30it would be pretty remarkable.
14:32It's getting grey over in that direction.
14:34It has never rained on any of the previous 18 runnings
14:38of Hungarian Grand Prix.
14:40I know all the times you and I went there,
14:42it seemed to be hot and blazed there, very warm.
14:46One track where I really used to feel for Formula One photographers
14:49who have to tramp around on foot,
14:51carrying all their heavy lenses and camera bodies and film and stuff.
14:54This place was just awful, it looks so much better now.
15:01Mark Webber on track, but none of the real front runners are.
15:05So we'll take this opportunity for a quick break.
15:08We'll be back with more, live from Friday practice at the Hungarro ring.
15:12There's your top eight.
15:13We'll be back in a moment.
15:22We mentioned earlier, a lot of the teams are playing with fuel load and tires right now.
15:27Bjorn Vertheim, the third driver or Friday driver for Jaguars,
15:31currently third at a one-minute 22.812 lap.
15:35But you have to go all the way down to Anthony Davidson in ninth
15:38to find the next Friday driver.
15:43And you go down to 13th to find the next Friday driver.
15:46Of course, he's no longer a Friday driver.
15:47Ricardo Zonti's stepped up to the team.
15:50Next Friday boy is Ryan Briscoe, back in 20th.
15:53We pick up Rubens Barticello.
15:56Yes, meanwhile, 28.7, first sector.
16:0258.6 in the second sector.
16:04He's a half a second ahead of his own session leading time.
16:07Let's see how close he gets to his teammates.
16:101.21.5 from the morning.
16:12How's it look at this bump?
16:14Well, he took a much wider line there.
16:17Because as you were saying earlier on, there is a big transition there, isn't there?
16:21Well, straight into P1, 1.21.7.
16:251.21.7 is just a particular watt slower than last year's pole,
16:29which is Fernando Alonso and the Renault.
16:31We haven't seen them doing much yet, but there's time left.
16:34A little bit of adjustment going off on the steering wheel.
16:38If Ferrari outscores Renault by nine points
16:42and the Constructors for the weekend,
16:44they will clinch their sixth straight Constructors title.
16:47That is remarkable.
16:49It should be a pretty good lap.
16:53Oh, there it is.
16:54You're absolutely right, P1.
16:55Who says this should be a pretty good lap?
16:57You're the man, David Hobbs.
16:59You've always told us.
17:02Every now and then a pig finds a trouble.
17:06Thanks, Bob.
17:07Yeah, 21.5.
17:08Well, that takes them under the pole.
17:10Let's have a look at how the Williams chassis reacts over that.
17:14Not too bad.
17:15It actually looked like the right front was already in the air
17:17before the transition point of the track.
17:20Well, it's got so much grip there.
17:22You can see the thing was understeady quite a bit,
17:23but on the other hand,
17:24it was obviously hanging right in towards the apex.
17:26What is it swinging on?
17:27Did you notice the radiator, I mean the, yeah,
17:30the radiator air exhaust stacks are capped off on the car.
17:35Yeah, that's something that we were talking about with Renault Bolt.
17:38You remember when we're looking around the Renault
17:40with Alan Permain showing us the exhaust exits?
17:43And what they do,
17:44even if they don't want to use any cooling on the car,
17:46they still need to use the same teardrop profile of the bodywork
17:50to keep the consistency of the aerodynamics.
17:52So even if they've got it capped off,
17:54there it is, right,
17:55that's what we're talking about,
17:56right above the HP logo.
17:57Well, what they do,
17:59if to control the underbody temperature,
18:01if they don't want to use that,
18:02rather than just blank it off and move it completely
18:04because of the airflow over the car,
18:06now it's set up in the wind tunnel,
18:07they need to keep the same profile over the chassis.
18:11But good eye for picking that up, Bob,
18:12the fact it's blanked off.
18:14Because around here, of course,
18:16normally, as we've been saying,
18:17it gets so hot that a lot of the teams
18:19are very concerned about the underbody temperatures.
18:23That's Mario Tyson, the engine guru from BMW.
18:27But we're looking back at
18:28when we were watching the Ferrari earlier on,
18:30I noticed they've got very big openings on the exhaust chimneys,
18:35on the radiator chimneys, sorry.
18:40Those super slow-mos make these cars look like they're just awful,
18:43but there's an awful lot of stress going through those cars.
18:47There, look at the Ferrari chassis,
18:49exactly the same point we're looking about at the car.
18:51There you see the radiator chimneys wide open.
18:54They have two or three different variations
18:56you can put onto the car to control the amount of heat flow.
19:00But a Ferrari, certainly concerned about underbody temperatures.
19:03Well, he lost a lot of time there.
19:04He was hoping to get Bioweb, obviously.
19:06Well, he actually posed the fastest time.
19:08He had a 28.4.
19:09It was a very good line, he took there.
19:1228.4, first sector.
19:14As I go up and down the timing list here,
19:15that's about a half second quicker than anybody in that first sector.
19:19Don't you say about pigs and truffles earlier on, Bob?
19:21Yeah.
19:23And a 29.5 in the second.
19:26He's the only man to get under 30 seconds in that second sector.
19:30Ah, Weber here up to the old tricks.
19:32He's letting him through there,
19:34because he's getting a bit of a reputation
19:35since having a wide car.
19:36Of course, last year, as I said earlier,
19:38he had a very wide car for a very long time.
19:40Of course, that's a bit different in the race.
19:41I mean, he's racing the second position at the time.
19:44Yeah.
19:45But there's no point being difficult.
19:49Well, Michael going about his business.
19:50Recall three weeks ago at the German Grand Prix,
19:53he was suffering from the flu.
19:54He kept downplaying it,
19:55but he admitted this weekend it took him
19:57more than a week after that German race
19:59to finally shake the effects of it.
20:01He then went whitewater rafting and rock climbing
20:04with his wife Corinna and their children.
20:07And it says he's fit to go this weekend.
20:09Rock climbing with the kids,
20:10that sounds like they're politically incorrect,
20:12and they wouldn't be allowed to do that in America.
20:13Well, I didn't say the kids went rock throwing.
20:16They went rock throwing.
20:19Put all the passes behind.
20:20Oh, not with this, Daddy.
20:23Excuse me.
20:23It's like a tighter line for the Ferrari,
20:25trying to avoid that bump.
20:27No good rock throwing.
20:28Better?
20:32Oh, my goodness.
20:33It's going to be one of those weekends.
20:35Let's stop here.
20:35That's all right.
20:37We'll take another quick break.
20:39Throttle our colleague
20:39and be back as a two-man booth in just a moment.
20:42Stay with us.
20:44Friday practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
20:47Nice line through the corner
20:48for the Renault of Jarno Trulli,
20:50who slots into 11th place
20:52behind Michael Schumacher,
20:53Antonio Pisonja in the Williams,
20:56Rubens Barichello in the second Ferrari,
20:57then Fernando Alonso,
20:58Juan Pablo Montoya,
21:00Giancarlo Fisichello,
21:01Ricardo Zonta,
21:02Bjorn Verheim,
21:02David Coulthard,
21:03and Kimi Raikkonen.
21:05Kimi Raikkonen,
21:05and we just saw him getting into his car,
21:07about to go out again.
21:09Expect fireworks from Kimi.
21:12These guys,
21:13Montoya and Pisonja suddenly
21:14come to life in the old William,
21:15didn't they?
21:16These guys have got another
21:18engine power update.
21:24They're now on the D-Spec engine,
21:26which is coming to play for this race.
21:28But don't think that you've missed out on something
21:30you've said,
21:30well,
21:31we know they had a B-Spec engine,
21:32and now we're on to a D-Spec engine.
21:34What happened to the C-Spec?
21:35They only ram the C-Spec engine on the Dino.
21:38That B-Spec came in at Imola.
21:40They've worked on it now.
21:41Again,
21:42I think this will be about the last incarnation
21:43of this engine before the end of the season.
21:45There's not an awful lot else
21:46they can do to it,
21:47but I don't think.
21:48New design cylinder heads,
21:49new design valves,
21:50new design camshafts.
21:52We've been saying all season
21:53what they needed is more power,
21:54and it's certainly something
21:56they've been working on,
21:57isn't it?
21:57Well,
21:57they've been working on it,
21:58but has it benefited them enormously?
22:02They were pretty quick last year.
22:04Well,
22:06the chassis has certainly
22:07had an improvement on last year,
22:08and the chassis was very good last year.
22:09A little bit twitchy
22:10at the start of the season,
22:11but around here,
22:12I think they should be good.
22:13They can get the tyres hooked up as well.
22:16As I said before,
22:17these Friday times
22:18can be a bit misleading.
22:19You don't know what these guys are doing
22:21or trying all sorts of stuff.
22:23They might try and crank out
22:24a real quick one
22:24at the end of the session,
22:25but it must be a bit ominous
22:27for everybody
22:27that the Ferrari
22:28has been so quick
22:28right in the very first lap.
22:30That is David Coulthard there,
22:32who's checking the grip
22:32on the grass.
22:33I think it's not the grass.
22:34Ooh!
22:35Look at the...
22:35Ouch!
22:36The size of the shrouds
22:37they've got around the exhaust
22:38on that car again
22:39to try and
22:41keep the engine
22:42as cool as possible,
22:43and we know the Mercedes
22:43have had awful reliability
22:45on that engine
22:46certainly in the early stages
22:47of the season,
22:47so they'll be...
22:49They'll be worried
22:50about trying to keep things
22:51cool under that.
22:52Jenson Button
22:53notice he's just jumped
22:54up to fourth,
22:55just two seconds
22:56off of Michael...
22:57two-tenths of a second
22:58off Michael Schumacher's base.
23:00I've flown over buildings
23:01going to airports
23:01which have got signage
23:03on the roof,
23:04you know,
23:04like a factory
23:05would have the signage
23:05on the roof,
23:06but I've yet to see
23:07anybody got a logo
23:08on the sole of their shoe.
23:10That's kind of...
23:11That's F1 for you
23:12right there
23:12as if you never miss
23:13an opportunity.
23:14Yeah, well he knows
23:15you're going to be
23:16photographed or filmed
23:17sitting at the desk there.
23:19They'll all have it
23:20shortly.
23:22And they have been
23:23very small steps
23:25from the Claren this year
23:26but those steps
23:27are being taken.
23:31Benson Button
23:32was asked
23:33in the midweek
23:34press conference
23:35on at least
23:36ten different occasions
23:37about his contract
23:38situation for next year
23:39and he's stonewalled
23:40all ten of them
23:43in very gracious style.
23:45Tough times
23:45for the young Brit
23:46right now.
23:48We'll take a break
23:49and return to Hungary
23:50in a moment.
23:52Anyway,
23:53this track is traditionally
23:54very dusty
23:55but Bob,
23:57maybe you can tell me
23:57I'm not sure
23:58how much use
23:58this track gets
23:59throughout the rest
24:00of the season.
24:00I mean,
24:01people used to tell me
24:01it never used to get used
24:02very much
24:03but I kind of find
24:03that hard to believe.
24:04I thought there are
24:05all sorts of saloon cars
24:06pounding around.
24:07Well, you'd think so
24:07but actually there haven't
24:08been over the years.
24:09There used to be
24:09a world superbike race
24:11here
24:12and I'm sure
24:13there may be
24:13some kind of
24:14club racing going on
24:15but it's worth remembering
24:16that this track
24:16was built
24:17specifically
24:18and at one point
24:19exclusively
24:20for Formula One
24:21built in the space
24:23of nine months
24:24in this area
24:25known as
24:26the Three Springs Valley.
24:30They were so desperate
24:31to have a race
24:32they teamed up
24:32with Formula One boss
24:33Bernie Ecclestone
24:34who I believe
24:34remains the promoter
24:35of this race
24:39built this track
24:40there you see
24:41those top
24:41look at those top
24:43well top eight times
24:44I mean that is
24:45pretty close
24:49Alonso
24:50last year's
24:50pole sitters
24:51now
24:51coming to life
24:52up there
24:53in sixth spot
24:55only four tenths
24:56of a second
24:57slower than
24:57Michael Schumacher's time
24:59Olivier Panis
25:00in the Toyota
25:00how do you make
25:01your tire selection
25:03under these conditions
25:04I mean you've collected
25:05your data
25:06but you're looking
25:06at the sky
25:07you may get at least
25:08overnight rain
25:09that'll change the
25:10character of the racetrack
25:11if we get rain
25:12it'll probably mean
25:13cool temperatures
25:15that was Steve Hallam
25:16you saw there
25:17on the left hand side
25:17of the McLaren bench
25:19chewing away
25:19Steve Hallam
25:21was our host
25:22for Mrs. Hobbs
25:23and I
25:23when we went to
25:24the Paragon opening
25:25and Steve was a very
25:26gracious host
25:26took us around the place
25:27showed us a lot of stuff
25:28he's been doing this
25:29a long time
25:30oh he's a terribly
25:31gifted engineer
25:33I mean he is one of those
25:34guys you can ask
25:35anything about anything
25:36for Formula 1
25:37and he knows it
25:37but not only that
25:38he's got so much
25:40interest in the sport
25:41as well
25:42you know which
25:42I have to say
25:43quite frankly
25:44a lot of engineers
25:44and mechanics
25:45and people inside
25:45the pit lane
25:46they're all concentrated
25:48on today
25:48but what happened
25:49yesterday kind of
25:49fades away from them
25:50but not with Steve Hallam
25:51he's very much
25:52a historian of the sport
25:53too
25:55he's watching Kimi Rikens
25:56and we had some
25:56great slow-mos there
25:57of Kimi Rikens
25:58going over those curbs
25:59and of course
26:00that was the thing
26:00that Michael Schumacher
26:02used to get a lot of
26:02flack for
26:03because he didn't have
26:03a great history
26:04he didn't know a lot
26:05about the history
26:06and you know
26:07he's sort of thinking
26:07well I don't know
26:08do I mind
26:10do I care
26:10should I care
26:11I'm driving
26:12I'm winning
26:13why do I have to know
26:14who won the 1946
26:15Sungarian Grand Prix
26:16you know what I mean
26:19you pick up a very
26:20good point though
26:20David
26:21Formula One
26:21and all sports
26:22motorsport
26:23but we're talking
26:23about Formula One
26:24right here
26:24it's all about today
26:26and what happens
26:26tomorrow
26:27what happened yesterday
26:27as far as the team
26:28is concerned
26:29is ancient history
26:31I think that's a
26:32terrible thing
26:32I think you ignore
26:33your history
26:34at your peril
26:36because that's what
26:37gives texture
26:38and perspective
26:39and everything
26:39you know
26:40that you're following
26:41in the tire track
26:42so to speak
26:42of the Fangios
26:44and the Nuvolaris
26:45and Jimmy Clark
26:46and Jackie Stewart
26:47and Dan Gurney
26:49and Mario Andretti
26:50and all of those people
26:50Dano
26:53Kimi Räikkönen
26:55just gone quick
26:56it's 185 miles an hour
26:57from Kimi Räikkönen
26:58through the speed track
26:59here
26:59all day long
27:00so far
27:01up to that point
27:02we've seen the Ferraris
27:03being one two
27:03quickest through the
27:04speed track
27:04but now that
27:05Mercedes engine
27:06in the MP419
27:07cranking out 185
27:09well at 21.5
27:11it's about
27:12it's just a hair
27:13under 120 miles an hour
27:15actually it is about
27:17it's almost exactly
27:18let's have a look
27:18at him through that
27:19over that bump
27:19it is right there
27:21it's got some serious
27:23grip going in there
27:23I mean hugging that
27:24curb there
27:25rather than inside
27:30Kimi Räikkönen
27:31you know
27:32very highly touted
27:33but really hasn't
27:34had the results
27:34he should have done
27:35but he's had a lot
27:36of awful luck
27:37with mechanicals
27:38and things like that
27:39I mean last year
27:40in that European
27:41Grand Prix
27:41in the URB ring
27:42I mean he was
27:42so far gone
27:43it was a joke
27:44and the thing
27:44blew up on him
27:45and he should have
27:47had a few more
27:48good results
27:49than he's had
27:49now there is a wide
27:51line for Felipe
27:52Masa and
27:53Nassauber
27:55he was practically
27:56in downtown Budapest
27:57that time
27:59which is about
28:0012 miles away
28:02we'll take another
28:03quick break
28:04coming up on
28:0516 minutes remaining
28:07in the second of
28:08two Friday practices
28:09for the Hungarian
28:10Formula One Grand Prix
28:13joining a world
28:14feed replay
28:15of Giancarlo Fisichella
28:16going off again
28:17in the Sauber
28:18watch this
28:18from the onboard
28:22just didn't
28:23turn in for him
28:25again that gravel
28:26I think this is
28:26turn eight
28:27going
28:28through the grass
28:32Fisichella heads
28:33for the pits
28:34while he does
28:35here's a program
28:35note
28:36join us Sunday
28:36morning for live
28:37coverage of the
28:38Hungarian Grand Prix
28:39beginning at 7.30 a.m.
28:40Eastern with the
28:40Acura Pre-Race Show
28:41and live
28:42straight through
28:43to the post-race
28:44interviews
28:44where Peter Windsor
28:45will be asking
28:45the questions
28:46again that's
28:47Sunday morning
28:477.30 Eastern
28:48live only here
28:49on speed
28:50but subject
28:51to blackout
28:53board with
28:54Juan Pablo Montoya
28:55and the new look
28:56or at least
28:57new nose
28:59Williams BMW
29:01well now
29:01there's a thing
29:02you know
29:03these guys
29:03spend millions
29:04and millions
29:05literally millions
29:06and millions
29:06in the wind tunnel
29:07they come up
29:08with that
29:08sharp nose
29:09or whatever
29:10the hell
29:10they call it
29:10platypus
29:11and it's
29:11got to be
29:12this is it
29:13lads
29:14oh
29:14well there it is
29:15they go back
29:16to the old nose
29:16and your point was
29:18you're absolutely
29:18right David Hobbs
29:19they do all that
29:20work and the car
29:21goes so much
29:22quicker
29:22but I mean
29:23they do that
29:23time on the
29:24old nose
29:25or the new
29:26old nose
29:26and then they
29:27go back to
29:27this
29:28more standard
29:29twin nose
29:29and instantly
29:30pick up all that
29:31what are they doing
29:32in the wind tunnel
29:32they went with
29:33the new
29:34slim high nose
29:35but they kept
29:35the twin keel
29:36twin in construction
29:37yes it is
29:38it is interesting
29:40the point you
29:40bring up there
29:41Bob
29:41that the chassis
29:42itself
29:43the monocoque
29:43the moulded
29:44carbon fibre
29:45monocoque
29:46has remained the same
29:47but there's
29:47Michael Schumacher
29:48waxed straight back
29:49to P1
29:51so I mean
29:52I think
29:53all credit to
29:54Williams
29:54for admitting
29:55basically
29:56that that nose
29:56is wrong
29:57but rather than
29:58just stick with
29:58it all year
30:00they have
30:00done something
30:01about it
30:02and I think
30:03personally
30:03that the new
30:04FW26
30:04looks so
30:05much better
30:06with a more
30:07traditional nose
30:08on it
30:12I've been
30:12talking a lot
30:13with Alan
30:14Permain
30:14in these last
30:15three weeks
30:15trying to figure
30:16out exactly
30:17what's been
30:17happening
30:17with the tyres
30:18and the tyre
30:19war
30:19and what the
30:20performance gaps
30:21have been doing
30:21as a result
30:22of that
30:22and we seem
30:23to basically
30:24think
30:24you know
30:24about
30:260.1
30:270.125
30:29seconds advantage
30:30per corner
30:31around the lap
30:31so what we're
30:33thinking about
30:33Monza coming up
30:34and there are
30:35fewer corners
30:35at Monza
30:36so we should
30:36see
30:38the lap
30:39time difference
30:39from last
30:40year to this
30:40year should
30:41be less
30:41at Monza
30:42than this
30:43track
30:43for example
30:44because it's
30:4414 corners
30:45round here
30:46and of course
30:47Bridgestone
30:48really started
30:48to work hard
30:49on their tyres
30:50for tracks
30:50like this
30:51one
30:51for Monte
30:52Carlo
30:52to try
30:53and get
30:53some more
30:53tyre performance
30:54where they're
30:54obviously lacking
30:55it
30:55and last
30:57year
30:57of course
30:57Alonso
30:58lapped
30:58Michael
30:59Schumacher
30:59Michael Schumacher
31:00ended up
31:01eight
31:01one lap
31:02down
31:02but of course
31:03since then
31:04he's only
31:05failed to win
31:06two races
31:07Japanese Grand Prix
31:08last year
31:09where his
31:09teammate won
31:09and Monte Carlo
31:10is here
31:11so yeah
31:12obviously the
31:13wake-up call
31:14woke him up
31:14and Ferrari
31:15has already
31:16announced
31:16they're doing
31:17no further
31:17development
31:18on their
31:182004 car
31:21relying
31:22specifically
31:22on tyre
31:23development
31:23from here
31:24on out
31:24to try
31:25to maintain
31:25a margin
31:25over the
31:26field
31:27and they've
31:27stopped
31:28some work
31:28on their
31:292005 car
31:30until someone
31:31makes up
31:32their mind
31:32as to what
31:33the regulations
31:33are going to
31:34be in 2005
31:35it's getting
31:35a bit late
31:36in the season
31:36to be changed
31:37regulations
31:37in my mind
31:38Eddie Jordan
31:39called for a
31:39meeting of the
31:40team principals
31:41for just that
31:42reason
31:42he says
31:42we better
31:43get our
31:43act together
31:43now
31:44because the
31:45longer we
31:45go
31:46the further
31:46that's going
31:47to push
31:47development
31:48of next year's
31:48car back
31:49but it's
31:50going to
31:50cost everybody
31:51a whole lot
31:51more money
31:51see what's
31:52really given
31:52the teams
31:53the concern
31:54is unless
31:54the teams
31:55actually all
31:56agree of what
31:57the new
31:57technical
31:58regulation
31:58should be
31:59Max Mosley
32:00and the FIA
32:01will just
32:01enforce his
32:02own regulations
32:03on the grounds
32:04of safety
32:04that awful
32:05sort of cop-out
32:06clause in
32:06the constructors
32:07in the
32:08Concord
32:08Agreement
32:08and the
32:09sporting regs
32:10if the teams
32:10won't agree
32:11Max will make
32:12the decision
32:12for them
32:12and I think
32:13they've got
32:13to be very
32:14careful
32:14to stop
32:15that happening
32:16personally
32:16that was a
32:17nice lap
32:18there by
32:18Jenson Button
32:19and on that
32:19onboard shot
32:20there going
32:21through that
32:21last turn
32:22over that
32:22big bump
32:22it really
32:23didn't look
32:23to be
32:24much
32:24from in
32:24car
32:29going back
32:29going back to
32:29that tire
32:30situation
32:31if we add
32:31up around
32:32those 14
32:32corners
32:33and they
32:34are very
32:34distinct
32:35corners
32:35around
32:36the
32:37hungara
32:37ring
32:37very tight
32:38and winding
32:38track
32:39we should
32:39see a
32:40lap time
32:41fall of
32:41between
32:41like
32:421.6
32:43and 1.75
32:44seconds
32:44from last
32:45year to
32:45this year
32:45we've got
32:46a long way
32:47to go
32:47that's
32:47kind of
32:48where I
32:48was thinking
32:48Bob
32:48earlier
32:49on
32:49with
32:49how dusty
32:50the track
32:50is
32:51from
32:51Friday
32:52sessions
32:53that we
32:53see
32:53today
32:54and how
32:54much
32:54it'll
32:55clean up
32:55for tomorrow
32:55because at
32:56the moment
32:56we're a long
32:57way off
32:57that
32:571.6
32:581.75
32:59drop
32:59we should
33:00point out
