Qualifying for Round 13 of the 2004 F1 season at Budapest.
Transcript
00:00:00They are Honda of Jensen Button, his first career pole.
00:00:04Yarno Trulli's first career pole, and it comes here at Monaco.
00:00:09He does it. He hits the pole, Ralph Schumacher, by 66 thousandths of a second.
00:00:16Through the line. Yes! He did it!
00:00:19Listen to the air horns for Ruben Botticello.
00:00:23Bernardo Alonso picks up his third career pole.
00:00:28Crab comes alive from one of the home team's worst!
00:00:32Wow! Let's see what Michael Schumacher can do about this.
00:00:58No one!
00:01:01No one!
00:01:03No one!
00:01:05No one!
00:01:07Yeah!
00:01:07Oh!
00:01:09Oh!
00:01:13Thus far in the 2004 Formula One season, seven different men have sat on pole position.
00:01:19One more will tie the all-time record as we welcome you to qualifying for round 13 of the Formula
00:01:25One World Championship, the Grand Prix of Hungary.
00:01:29Hello, everybody. I'm Bob Barsha. Joining me as always, David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:01:33We have cloud cover overhead above the Hungaro Ring, known as Monaco without the houses.
00:01:39A very tight and twisty racetrack, and we had a surprise in this morning's first round of single-car, single
00:01:47-lap qualifying.
00:01:48With that, let's take a look at the highlights of the first round.
00:01:53As the winner of the most recent race, as he has been 11 times this year, Michael Schumacher rolled out.
00:02:00First on track in the Ferrari. We expected a lot out of the world champion, and we got it.
00:02:05The fastest lap of the weekend to that point, one minute, 19.1 seconds. But he would not stay there.
00:02:11Jenson Button was next out on the track in the BAR Honda. He looked pretty strong, but he would end
00:02:15up, in fact, in seventh spot in the running order coming up.
00:02:18And then from his great result last year, Alonso in the R24 Renault chassis. Tipped the line, 20.135 P11.
00:02:25Won Pablo Montoya out with a new nose treatment on the Williams BMW, second at the time, but he faded
00:02:32to sixth.
00:02:33Button's teammate, Takuma Sato, was next out in the BAR Honda. He would end up fifth.
00:02:40And Giancarlo Pizzetella out in the C23 Sauber chassis. Would finish up fourth during that third session. Nice job.
00:02:47And then the shocker, Rubens Botticello, in the second Ferrari, came out and knocked seven tenths off his teammate's time
00:02:54and remained provisional pole sitter.
00:02:57And Felipe Massa went out and did a very good time beating his teammate, much more experienced teammate, ending up
00:03:02third.
00:03:02But, of course, he's going to have to go ten spots back on the grid.
00:03:04And then Kimi Räikkönen out in the McLaren chassis, the revamped chassis.
00:03:08We would finish tenth during that session. 1.630 seconds off. There it is on the ground.
00:03:13And Jean Tote, team manager at Ferrari, gave a round of 18th green golf applause for his man, Rubens Botticello.
00:03:21So, this should be a very interesting session.
00:03:23As always, the first session times only set the order, slowest to fastest, for the second round of single car,
00:03:31single lap qualifying.
00:03:32So, here's the order they will go out in, starting with the two Minardis on Bridgestone tires.
00:03:37Jolt Baumgartner leading off, the home favorite, and the only Hungarian driver in Formula One.
00:03:49It's a festive day.
00:03:52Grandstand's fairly empty. I'm surprised. Normally, this race is very well attended.
00:03:56Of course, it's so close to Budapest, only about 12 miles away from the capital city of Hungary.
00:04:00You can see a bit of cloud cover around today. It's still pretty hot there in the 80s, but it's
00:04:04obviously a bit humid, too.
00:04:07And then the four Bridgestone-tired cars going out, the last four in line, all, of course, with Ferrari engines.
00:04:14This track is renowned for its dust.
00:04:17They brought out a new vacuum machine to help prepare the track for the arrival of the Formula One World
00:04:22Championship.
00:04:23And according to Renault's, Pat Simmons, they managed to extract four tons of sand from this track before yesterday's first
00:04:33practice.
00:04:34That is quite remarkable.
00:04:36Broody and the Minardi.
00:04:38All the teams have been saying, of course, that the track would pick up, as we're saying at yesterday's practice
00:04:42show, Bob.
00:04:43You know, once the track rubbers in and that dust is blown away, the times would fall.
00:04:47But that time of Barrichello's at 18.436, it was 3.6 seconds quicker than last year's fastest race car.
00:04:56Speaking of the track, while we have a moment, let's take a look at our Porsche track pass.
00:05:01Well, as you said, Bob, it is like Monte Carlo without a house.
00:05:04It's the second slowest track, 120-mile-an-hour average for roundabout that for qualifying.
00:05:08As you can see, 14 turns, some of which are very tight.
00:05:111, 2, 13, 14, long, long corners.
00:05:14You need a huge amount of mechanical grip here, and they crank on all the downforce they can get.
00:05:18And, of course, one of the penalties is difficult to overtake.
00:05:21But they changed that run from 11 to 12 a couple of years back to give more of an opportunity
00:05:26for outbraking into 12.
00:05:27But still, in all, the best place to overtake is into one, so you've really got to make sure that
00:05:3114 goes well.
00:05:3314 has a large bump in the middle of it now, so it makes it a little bit more difficult.
00:05:37And, of course, like Monte Carlo, it's one of those tracks that comes in as the weekend goes on because
00:05:41it doesn't get used much further down.
00:05:43And Pat Simmons said something interesting about that.
00:05:45He said as the track rubbers in, the Friday brake wear will double by Sunday's race, and the tire wear
00:05:52will drop by 50%.
00:05:55Pretty amazing statistics, though.
00:05:57How can you come to a setup decision knowing that's going to happen as the weekend wears on?
00:06:03Our first car is rolling out to warm up.
00:06:05It will be Jolt Baumgartner.
00:06:07We'll take a quick break and bring you his lap when we return.
00:06:10Stand by.
00:06:12The Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix truck map is brought to you by Porsche.
00:06:17Porsche, there is no substitute.
00:06:24Welcome back to qualifying for round 13 of the Formula One season.
00:06:28The Grand Prix of Hungary.
00:06:30Bob Barsha along with Steve Matchett and David Hobbs with you.
00:06:32And this is Jolt Baumgartner, the only Hungarian driver to score a world championship point in Formula One competition.
00:06:40Although a Hungarian driver by the name of Ferenc Zees won the very first Grand Prix race, the 1906 French
00:06:48Grand Prix.
00:06:49And there's a statue of him just outside the timing and scoring building here at the Hungarov ring.
00:06:55I don't think old Jolt is about to win any Grand Prix, but you never know, do you?
00:07:00It looks like the sun is breaking through that cloud cover, so that will change people's setup just a little
00:07:06bit.
00:07:06Because this track here, it is hot in the middle of Hungary here, right in the middle of the Asian
00:07:10sort of mass.
00:07:12And the track, the sun here is hot.
00:07:15And of course, when it shines down on the track, the track temperature goes up much quicker than the ambient.
00:07:19And there's old Jolt's fans.
00:07:22He did a 124.656 on his opening lap of qualifying.
00:07:29Of course, right now, he'll be on their predetermined race fuel.
00:07:34Yeah, and not just the race fuel, of course.
00:07:36They will have decided on the wings and the brake cooling, radiator cooling.
00:07:41All has to be specified prior to this one lap qualifying run.
00:07:45And after this lap, they will go into park for May.
00:07:48And that'll be it, pretty much, until the start of the race tomorrow.
00:07:51So, a lot of decisions on what the temperature will be in the race tomorrow has to be decided today.
00:07:56But they call in, look at the car.
00:08:00Looks like he could do it a bit more rear wing on that.
00:08:02Look, very tail happy going into that corner.
00:08:07Notice the Willux brand, the Dutch company that makes porcelain appliances, no longer on the side pods of this car.
00:08:14They split with the team after the most recent race in Germany three weeks ago.
00:08:17So, we're told it all has to do with the fact that the team took the sponsor name off the
00:08:22side pods
00:08:22to put a tribute to their sporting director, John Walton, who passed away on the weekend of the British Grand
00:08:30Prix.
00:08:32All very sad.
00:08:33It is a very sad and sorry state of affairs to be bickering about sponsorship at that time.
00:08:39Well, at this level of racing where they need every dollar they can get.
00:08:43I mean, well, I think one can only assume that the waters run much deeper.
00:08:47In a lot of these situations, than what we're aware of at the moment, maybe, you know, who knows what's
00:08:52been going on behind the scenes.
00:08:54Similar situation, I think, with Button and BAR and Williams as well.
00:08:57There must be so much that at the moment we're not aware of.
00:09:00Yeah.
00:09:01Well, Button spoke loudly this morning.
00:09:03In fact, he let his driving do the talking.
00:09:05He was the fastest man in this morning's two 45-minute practice sessions.
00:09:10He'll be up late in this session.
00:09:12In fact, he will be the 14th car on track.
00:09:15Wow, look at that chassis.
00:09:19It's a very difficult circuit to set up for in a way, although we were saying yesterday, you know, you
00:09:24just crank all the downforce on as much as possible.
00:09:28Oh, that's a nice tyre to start the race on now, isn't it?
00:09:31With a big flat spot, isn't it?
00:09:33Getting that compromise of, it's all about mechanical grip round here, most definitely.
00:09:38Get the wings on, but getting that compromise between, giving the chassis enough roll to allow the mechanics of the
00:09:44car to work,
00:09:45to allow the tyres to grip coming out of those low-speed corners, but not giving it too much roll
00:09:49so the car's wallowing from side to side.
00:09:52That's the tricky bit of it all.
00:09:53And, of course, keeping the gap between the car and the ground pretty even so you get the most aerodynamic
00:09:58force from underneath the car.
00:10:00And, of course, as Bob said, it is, this track does take some coming in.
00:10:04So, you know, you come in on Friday and you flog yourself to death and it's all different on Sunday.
00:10:07Yeah.
00:10:11As you say, Bob, the tyre wear dropping by 50% is quite staggering.
00:10:16Of course, the reason for that, with all the grit, sand and dust on the track, the tyres slide so
00:10:21much.
00:10:22That's where the wear comes in on the Friday.
00:10:24So, although you get a lot more mechanical grip on Saturday, the tyres are actually not wearing as much
00:10:28because they're just really gripping to the tarmac and not wearing by sliding around.
00:10:33Like that.
00:10:34It'd be brilliant having a good slide there.
00:10:36This is a very important corner, this 14.
00:10:38Big bump right there.
00:10:39Yeah.
00:10:40Because it launches onto this straight, which is so important to get alongside somebody going to turn one.
00:10:47Well, he was 1.3 seconds quicker than his teammate on his first hot lap,
00:10:51but he is 3 tenths slower on his second one.
00:10:55There's that lock-up up close.
00:10:58Next up will be the Jaguars.
00:11:00Christian Kleen and Mark Webber.
00:11:02We'll be back for that in a moment.
00:11:08Welcome back to qualifying for the Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix.
00:11:11You'll see live Sunday morning here on Speed Channel.
00:11:14I'm Bob Varsha with David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:11:16The two Minardis are qualified.
00:11:18Here come the Jaguars.
00:11:19This is Christian Kleen of Austria.
00:11:25The youngest driver out there.
00:11:28Not having a great year.
00:11:29Of course, it's very difficult to tell just how good this car is, but I would imagine it's not the
00:11:34best.
00:11:35And Christian Kleen has made a lot of mistakes, but it's a huge step up from what he was doing
00:11:39before as well.
00:11:41He did a 1.21.510 on his first hot lap, and he's ahead of the pace set by provisional
00:11:47pole sitter, Zolt Baumgartner.
00:11:49Well, when one looks at the relative budgets, you'd hope he would be locked with you.
00:11:56I'm sure there's a lot of people at Jaguar and Ford that wish he was even quicker.
00:12:02Paul Stoddart, the Minardi team owner, said that earlier this year.
00:12:05I mean, look what we're doing with $45 million.
00:12:07Other teams have ten times the budget.
00:12:09Just think what we could do if we had that kind of money.
00:12:14Kleen sticking it to the Minardi's early.
00:12:19Kleen.
00:12:20Of course, the big thing in these two-car teams, obviously, the main guy you want to beat is your
00:12:25teammate,
00:12:26because that's the only real yardstick you have.
00:12:30Kleen takes 3.2 seconds off of Zolt Baumgartner.
00:12:35Goodness.
00:12:36David Stubbs, the team manager there.
00:12:38He should be, oh, he is pleased with that, and quite rightly so.
00:12:42Here's David Coulthard.
00:12:44His first run was a bit of a disappointment at the McLaren.
00:12:48A lot of vertical movement on the front of that Jag there, because a lot of that comes from the
00:12:51tires.
00:12:53Just look at these tires and these super slow-mos.
00:12:54You can see the sidewalls just being given how they go through these turns.
00:13:02Yeah, a lot of the suspension movement on these cars now is down to the sidewall deflection.
00:13:08Here comes Mark Webber.
00:13:10Running out the string with Jaguar.
00:13:13Before moving to Williams BMW next year.
00:13:16He did qualify third here last year, though, so he gets around the Hungara ring well.
00:13:22He did a 1.21.4.5.2 on his first lap.
00:13:34Qualified second in Malaya.
00:13:37And that's looked like even close to second since then.
00:13:42Look at it, slower than his team mate.
00:13:46You track the car's racing line around this track, and there is just no straight section at all to speak
00:13:51of, as they're really just setting up from one corner to the next, all the way around.
00:13:55Which is what makes it so difficult to pass on.
00:13:58Fisicula said he loves the place.
00:13:59He said it's just so physical and mental.
00:14:01You've just got to be on top of it the whole time.
00:14:04It's corner after corner, as you just said.
00:14:06And he loves it, and of course it gets very hot here.
00:14:09Mark Webber picking up a bit of time in that second sector there.
00:14:14He certainly needs to be quicker than clean.
00:14:17That's for Dead Shore.
00:14:17This is the sector that's really been tripping guys up in the first session, anyway.
00:14:21This third one.
00:14:23Mainly because of this corner.
00:14:24Yeah.
00:14:30Alright, the first battle is won.
00:14:32He has outqualified his teammate.
00:14:35But slower than he was on his first run.
00:14:41Mechanics looking on.
00:14:42He noticed all those black clouds overhead.
00:14:44It has never rained on the Hungarian Grand Prix in 18 previous runnings.
00:14:49Looks like a strong threat this weekend.
00:14:52It does.
00:14:52I was looking at those black clouds earlier on, Bob, and thinking, you know, during my time racing there at
00:14:57the Hungaria Ring, I can never remember seeing a cloud at all.
00:15:00Just absolutely blistering, perfect, cloudless blue skies.
00:15:04In fact, normally very, very hot.
00:15:06Yeah.
00:15:07Well, I'd certainly hope as a mechanic that you wouldn't see the sky much.
00:15:10I hope you'd be buried deep inside the...
00:15:13Up to your elbows in the race.
00:15:15Yes, absolutely.
00:15:16In the bowels of the shop.
00:15:19Here comes D.C.
00:15:20And he suddenly has a new potential career slot next year when he will leave the McLaren team after nine
00:15:27seasons.
00:15:29And a rather choice one it is that BAR Honda should Jenson Button move to Williams next year.
00:15:36I personally cannot see Jenson Button stopping at BAR.
00:15:40Even if this contract dispute works out in favor of BAR, Jenson simply does not want to be there.
00:15:46Why would you want a driver in the car that clearly does not want to be a part of the
00:15:50team?
00:15:50It makes no sense to me.
00:15:52The well has been well and truly poisoned, hasn't it?
00:15:54Well, absolutely.
00:15:55It will all be settled by lawyers and money, as far as I can see.
00:15:58But it would be pointless to have a driver in the car that doesn't want to be a part of
00:16:01the team.
00:16:02And that guy, I think, would be a great asset to BAR.
00:16:05Yeah.
00:16:08Wow.
00:16:09Ooh, slower than the...
00:16:10Oh, my goodness me.
00:16:12That's not what McLaren want to see with their new car.
00:16:16Ooh.
00:16:20No.
00:16:20And as we always say, of course, we have to allow for fuel strategies and different fuel loads in the
00:16:25car.
00:16:25But traditionally, this is a three-stop race.
00:16:27I'd be very surprised to see McLaren running heavy fuel and going for a two-stop.
00:16:3320.8 for Coulthard.
00:16:35A big improvement over his first lap, but still not as quick as Weber's Jaguar.
00:16:41He takes fastest first sector there, 28.5.
00:16:46Through sector one.
00:16:4828.7 for clean.
00:16:51Albert Haug looking on.
00:16:54Look at that brake disc glide.
00:16:55Isn't it great?
00:16:56Yeah.
00:16:57His teammate, Kimi Räikkönen, was the fastest man in Friday's practice times.
00:17:02But both McLarens have been mid-packed during this morning's two 45-minute practice sessions.
00:17:10A rueful shrug of the shoulders from one of the McLaren mechanics.
00:17:14We'll take a break.
00:17:15And when we return, Giorgio Pantano of Italy in the Jordan will be up next.
00:17:20Stick around.
00:17:25Speed Channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship is brought to you by BMW.
00:17:31BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
00:17:33And by Circuit City.
00:17:35Circuit City.
00:17:36Check us out at CircuitCity.com.
00:17:42Welcome back to qualifying for the Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix.
00:17:46Clouds overhead once again as the bright yellow Jordan in the hands of Giorgio Pantano takes to the track.
00:17:52Pantano, one of only two drivers who has not run in a points-paying position in a race at any
00:17:58juncture this year.
00:17:59The other being Jimmy Bruni in the Minardi.
00:18:03But a rough introduction to Grand Prix racing for the Italian.
00:18:07Well, I have to say that the Jordan certainly does not look a great car to me.
00:18:12They're obviously down on power with the customer at Cosworth.
00:18:16And the car always looks so incredibly twitchy, whether it's Pantano or Heidfeld driving it.
00:18:22And they obviously got a serious chassis problem in there somewhere.
00:18:26Supposedly talking to Toyota about a customer engine supply next year.
00:18:30Which would be very nice.
00:18:31Supposed to be a bit cheaper than the Ford and could have more horsepower.
00:18:36But, of course, they just don't have the money to go and the budget to go testing.
00:18:41I think that's their biggest problem this year.
00:18:43Is the fact that they just haven't developed the car through lack of funds.
00:18:47If you look back in history, I was thinking about this earlier on test and development work.
00:18:51And looking at the Arrows chassis.
00:18:52Arrows, whenever they produced a new car, were very quick in the early stages of testing.
00:18:57And in the opening race, we're always pretty much there or thereabouts.
00:19:00Then as the season progressed, everybody else developed the cars and improved.
00:19:03And the Arrows just dropped off into nowhere.
00:19:06Purely because, well, I think they were short of funds down on power.
00:19:09But the car was never developed from leaving the shop.
00:19:13And that development can be extraordinary.
00:19:15I was looking at a note earlier this year.
00:19:17Last year's Toyota, I believe it was, had no fewer than, I believe the number was around,
00:19:251,400 individual development evolutionary steps through the course of a season.
00:19:321,400 changes to the aerodynamics, the suspension, the engine, and so on.
00:19:39Wow.
00:19:40Which is why Ferrari's announcement that they're doing no further development on their 2004 car,
00:19:45rather putting their efforts toward next year's weapon,
00:19:49is a fairly significant development for them.
00:19:52Yeah.
00:19:53As it were.
00:19:55Well, I'm sure they'd like to develop the car further,
00:19:58but they're so close to securing both championships now,
00:20:01it's almost a mute point.
00:20:05But the next development of the car, the 2005 car, will be well on line now.
00:20:09Now, they may have had to stop development on that because of the potential rule changes for next year,
00:20:15but as a rule of thumb, come May, the new car is well underway,
00:20:19so the car for the next year must have like nine or ten months of development.
00:20:25You can see the input when we had that on board there with George,
00:20:27the input that he has to put in the steering input.
00:20:30The car just twitches so badly from the front end all the time.
00:20:32Yeah.
00:20:341.22.3.
00:20:37That's a good bit slow than he went on his first single that run this morning.
00:20:41Bumps Joel Baumgartner out of fourth.
00:20:46Jordan looking on.
00:20:47Rumors are that he is deep in negotiation,
00:20:49if in fact he hasn't signed the papers already,
00:20:52to sell a majority shareholding of his Formula One team
00:20:54to the Royal Family of Dubai.
00:20:59This might be the best thing for him to do,
00:21:00but it would be a shame to see Jordan go away.
00:21:04Olivier Pannis, another driver whose job is on the line.
00:21:09Cristiano de Marte has already been on ceremonies to kick off the driving squad,
00:21:12been replaced this weekend by Riccardo Zonta,
00:21:15who was their Friday test driver,
00:21:17and Zonta was quicker in the first run
00:21:20just a few minutes ago than Olivier was.
00:21:24While we've been on air,
00:21:26the track temperature has dropped a little bit,
00:21:28down to 91 degrees, chaps.
00:21:30I think that's going to be a result of those clouds coming over
00:21:32that we were seeing earlier on,
00:21:34so this might give a little bit of extra performance.
00:21:38Well, I'll tell you what,
00:21:39it doesn't look far from a huge loss of performance.
00:21:42It looks pretty gloomy up there, doesn't it?
00:21:44It does, yeah.
00:21:46Now, you talk about budgets.
00:21:47This team has got a budget.
00:21:50As Crocodile Dundee would say,
00:21:53this is a budget.
00:21:55What, they got a thousand people working for them?
00:21:56They have, yeah, apparently,
00:21:58900, 950 people on the F1 project.
00:22:04And still languishing somewhat.
00:22:08But as I've said before,
00:22:10I just don't see Toyota
00:22:12putting up with that for much longer.
00:22:15There's that horrible transition on the track,
00:22:17just as you come out of that last corner,
00:22:19you can see the car,
00:22:20like it jumps off a step.
00:22:24There's Mike Gascoigne,
00:22:25who says the car is good,
00:22:27but the drivers are not getting the most out of it.
00:22:31Now, what kind of an awkward position
00:22:33does that put the drivers in?
00:22:35We'll be back in a moment.
00:22:41Welcome back to a cloudy day at the Hungaro Ring.
00:22:44Eddie Jordan,
00:22:45I'm not sure what he was doing with that microphone.
00:22:47Whoever saw a handheld microphone in a pit stall?
00:22:50I wonder whether or not he's talking to a TV company.
00:22:52I'll bet.
00:22:53You know, ITV in Britain sometimes
00:22:55puts a microphone along the pit wall.
00:23:00This is Nick Heidfeld of Germany in the Jordan.
00:23:06Let's see how gloomy it's becoming.
00:23:14They were very slow, Jordan,
00:23:16at getting to grips with a new generation of tires
00:23:19that were coming on board.
00:23:20They wanted to stop with the old tires,
00:23:22and
00:23:24although the tire suppliers are saying,
00:23:25you know, this is not the way to go,
00:23:26Bridgestone had come up with a new development tire
00:23:28to take the fight to Michelin,
00:23:30making that sort of square-shouldered tire.
00:23:32For a long while,
00:23:33Jordan couldn't get the car to work on that.
00:23:35Well, of course,
00:23:35if you don't do any testing,
00:23:36you don't have the budget,
00:23:37because you can't make it.
00:23:39You've kind of stuck with what you've got,
00:23:41aren't you, to a certain extent?
00:23:42Ooh,
00:23:42only Kyle felt,
00:23:43lost a lot on that sector.
00:23:45That first sector,
00:23:46he was quicker than Mark Webber in the jack.
00:23:48His first lap was a 120.439.
00:23:51That would have been the fastest time
00:23:53in either of the first two practice sessions yesterday,
00:23:56and it would have been second quickest
00:23:57in this morning's 45-minute first practice.
00:24:02I think that Jordan has come around
00:24:04on the Bridgestone tires
00:24:05that have been produced for this race.
00:24:08Absolutely.
00:24:09Yeah.
00:24:0922.1,
00:24:10significantly slower,
00:24:11but again,
00:24:12fuel levels probably adjusted
00:24:13in preparation for the race.
00:24:16And Heidfeld beats his team, mate.
00:24:19Vital thing,
00:24:20especially for Nick Heidfeld.
00:24:22When Pablo Montoya gets off the pit wall,
00:24:24he'll be getting ready shortly.
00:24:25There's the defending race champion,
00:24:26Fernando Alonso,
00:24:27and here is Nick Heidfeld
00:24:29with a big double handful of Jordan.
00:24:32You notice,
00:24:33Bob, as well,
00:24:34Jordan have reverted
00:24:35to using those little winglets
00:24:36right there
00:24:37above the radiator inlet.
00:24:38Remember a couple of races ago
00:24:39where they introduced them
00:24:40and they lost one on track?
00:24:41Charlie Whiting told them
00:24:43to remove them
00:24:43and made sure they were safe
00:24:44before they went back on the car.
00:24:46Well, clearly that's happened
00:24:47and it's another attempt
00:24:48to get all the downforce,
00:24:50any gram of extra downforce load
00:24:53onto these tires around here
00:24:54to stop the tires sliding,
00:24:56which is exactly what Pat Simmons
00:24:58was talking about yesterday.
00:25:00There's a new face on Saturday.
00:25:02This is Ricardo Zonta
00:25:03replacing Cristiano de Mata
00:25:05permanently in the Toyota.
00:25:08Boy, that Ricardo Zonta,
00:25:09you know, about four years ago,
00:25:10he won that World Sports Club championship.
00:25:12He was quick,
00:25:13very, very quick.
00:25:15Went to BAR
00:25:15and had a bit of a lacklustre time,
00:25:19but he had two absolutely horrific crashes
00:25:23when wings came off
00:25:26and I think it really got to his confidence a bit,
00:25:29but he's been doing very well
00:25:31in those Friday practices
00:25:32with the Toyota.
00:25:35This will be his first...
00:25:43He's been doing a lot of testing for them
00:25:45I thought he'd have been quicker
00:25:46than Webber in that sector there,
00:25:48but no.
00:25:51Oops.
00:25:52I think he'll still be quicker
00:25:53than David Coulthard.
00:25:54Blue 13 there,
00:25:55he's really wide.
00:25:56That's why this last sector
00:25:57is so...
00:25:58catches so many people out.
00:25:59You've got 12, 13, and 14,
00:26:01all of which are slow,
00:26:02long corners.
00:26:04Ooh, 21-1.
00:26:09Slight shake of the head
00:26:10for Mike Gascoigne.
00:26:11Yeah, it's just...
00:26:12Mike Gascoigne's thinking,
00:26:13blasted drivers.
00:26:16Exactly.
00:26:17Based on their record to date, Mike,
00:26:19I think it's the car.
00:26:23Ironically,
00:26:24Ricardo Zonta's first...
00:26:26It's a new aerodynamic
00:26:27for Ferrari.
00:26:29Lost his last Formula One drive
00:26:31to Olivier Panis,
00:26:32who is now his teammate
00:26:33at Toyota.
00:26:36The anemometer's spinning.
00:26:37Look at that wind,
00:26:38snapping the flags.
00:26:39It's blowing from the drivers' backs
00:26:41as they make their way
00:26:41along the front straightaway.
00:26:43Right here,
00:26:44Fernando Alonso
00:26:45has the wind at his back.
00:26:47Last year's pole sitter.
00:26:49And, of course,
00:26:50ultimate winner.
00:26:52Lapping Michael Schumacher.
00:26:55Mislage were definitely
00:26:56the king of the hill
00:26:57this time last year
00:26:58at this circuit.
00:26:59Yeah.
00:26:59They seem to have certainly
00:27:00lost that tremendous advantage
00:27:02they had last year here
00:27:03with the top four,
00:27:05four cars in the first qualifying
00:27:07just a few minutes ago,
00:27:08all being on Bridgestone.
00:27:12Boom!
00:27:27As you can hear from the car,
00:27:28you'll get a good grip
00:27:29and good traction
00:27:30coming off these corners.
00:27:51That's his turn in at 14.
00:27:56just absolutely slams the steering wheel.
00:27:59He does that.
00:28:00He does that.
00:28:00That's a signature
00:28:02of Alonso's drive.
00:28:03Wow!
00:28:03I'll tell you what,
00:28:04I was getting goosebumps
00:28:05watching that car go around there.
00:28:07That car and that driver combination
00:28:08is going to be fantastic.
00:28:10That's a real threat
00:28:11to Team Ferrari,
00:28:11I'm telling you.
00:28:13What a fantastic engine node
00:28:14off it as well.
00:28:15Yes,
00:28:16a new engine evolution
00:28:17this weekend
00:28:18for Renault.
00:28:20They're calling it
00:28:21their D-spec.
00:28:22He skipped right over
00:28:23the C-spec,
00:28:24never raced it,
00:28:25but several components
00:28:27from that stage
00:28:28are in the new D.
00:28:30And as you can see,
00:28:30Fernando Alonso
00:28:31with that flare
00:28:32that has led to
00:28:3475% increase
00:28:36in Spanish television viewership
00:28:38for Formula One.
00:28:40He is quite the man
00:28:41of the moment.
00:28:42In fact,
00:28:42we hear there may be
00:28:43another Spaniard coming
00:28:44or coming back
00:28:45to Formula One,
00:28:46Pedro de la Rosa.
00:28:47That's how popular
00:28:48it's getting.
00:28:59Welcome back
00:29:00to qualifying
00:29:01for round 13
00:29:01of the Formula One season,
00:29:03the Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:29:04I'm Bob Varsha
00:29:05with Steve Manchin
00:29:06and David Hobbs,
00:29:06and here comes
00:29:07the newly married
00:29:08Kimi Räikkönen.
00:29:09I need to correct
00:29:10something I said yesterday.
00:29:12His bride,
00:29:13Jenny Dahlman,
00:29:14is Swedish,
00:29:15not Finnish,
00:29:15a former Miss Sweden,
00:29:17as you might expect.
00:29:18Here's Antonio Pisonja
00:29:20in the new look Williams.
00:29:22There's David Coulthard
00:29:23wondering where
00:29:23it all went wrong.
00:29:25Currently third,
00:29:25but remember,
00:29:26the heavy hitters
00:29:26are coming,
00:29:27and we are just
00:29:28halfway through
00:29:29this qualifying session.
00:29:30He can't be very happy
00:29:31to be behind Mark Webber.
00:29:33There's no doubt about it.
00:29:34Let's see what
00:29:35Kimi Räikkönen
00:29:35could do with the car,
00:29:36Fernando Alonso
00:29:37and Renault
00:29:38are the provisional
00:29:39pole sitters,
00:29:39the only cars
00:29:40under 1 minute
00:29:4120 seconds thus far.
00:29:42Or car,
00:29:43I should say,
00:29:44119.996.
00:29:48Steve Cook
00:29:49needs another tattoo.
00:29:51Yeah, no,
00:29:52now it's tax,
00:29:53curiously enough.
00:29:55Then their tyre expert
00:29:56at McLaren
00:29:57working alongside
00:29:58Forklift,
00:29:58Steve Mather,
00:29:59a refuelling guy
00:30:00for years together.
00:30:01Their primary job
00:30:02is as truck drivers,
00:30:03but as soon as they get
00:30:04to the track,
00:30:04they take on different roles.
00:30:06One looks after the tyres,
00:30:07one looks after the fuel.
00:30:09Well, you saw that bump there,
00:30:10mate,
00:30:11old Kimi's head
00:30:12absolutely rocked it
00:30:13around the car there.
00:30:17Still just 24 years,
00:30:19well,
00:30:19coming up on his
00:30:2025th birthday.
00:30:23That horrible rear wing failure
00:30:25in the most recent race
00:30:26in Germany
00:30:26three weeks ago.
00:30:30Kimi Reikunen,
00:30:31185.4
00:30:33through the speed truck
00:30:34is not faster
00:30:35than David Kulthar.
00:30:41Fastest man on Friday here.
00:30:43Turned the fastest race lap
00:30:44in Germany.
00:30:45First time that
00:30:46McLaren had done that
00:30:48in over a year.
00:30:52This will be Alkimi,
00:30:5363rd Grand Prix,
00:30:54and before he came
00:30:55into Grand Prix racing,
00:30:57he had only done
00:30:5831 or 32 car races,
00:31:00so he's still only done
00:31:0290 races of any sort
00:31:03in a car.
00:31:04Heard the crowd cheering.
00:31:06Plenty of Finnish fans
00:31:07here in Hungary.
00:31:12If we get another chance
00:31:13to see the onboard
00:31:14shock of Kimi driving
00:31:15the car,
00:31:15you'll notice
00:31:16two little LED displays
00:31:18above his steering.
00:31:19One on the left
00:31:20showing green
00:31:20and one on the right
00:31:21showing blue.
00:31:22The green is the shift light
00:31:24saying you want to shift gear
00:31:25now or your risk
00:31:26of exploding the engine
00:31:27and I think if the blue
00:31:28comes up,
00:31:28you want to be shifting
00:31:29extremely quick.
00:31:30That is like change
00:31:32now or never, son.
00:31:35Second quick.
00:31:36Not as quick as Alonso,
00:31:38but half a second off.
00:31:39That's pretty substantial.
00:31:41Very substantial.
00:31:42So now he slots
00:31:43into P2
00:31:45and he's not going
00:31:46to want to stay there.
00:31:47That'll be the dirty line
00:31:48of the grid
00:31:49on this track
00:31:50where the surface
00:31:52can be so dusty
00:31:53offline.
00:31:55He ain't going to be
00:31:56TP2.
00:31:57He's going to be like
00:31:58more like P8 or 9
00:32:00I think because I would
00:32:01imagine it.
00:32:02Pisonja, Montoya,
00:32:04Button, Sarto.
00:32:06Here is Jungle Boy himself,
00:32:08Antonio Pisonja.
00:32:10Second Grand Prix
00:32:11for the Williams team.
00:32:13Notice the nose
00:32:13on the Williams.
00:32:14They've done away
00:32:15with that big
00:32:15platypus-like
00:32:17spread nose
00:32:18with the tusks.
00:32:21Going to something
00:32:22very much like
00:32:23last year's nose.
00:32:24I wonder how much
00:32:24money they spent
00:32:25on the wind, Tom,
00:32:26getting that tusk nose
00:32:27right.
00:32:28It was absolutely
00:32:29the way to go.
00:32:30The chief aerodynamicist
00:32:31is Antonia Terci
00:32:32probably had some
00:32:33explaining to do.
00:32:36Well, in her defense,
00:32:37remember this is
00:32:38the first year
00:32:39that Williams
00:32:39have used
00:32:39the twin-keel
00:32:40design as well.
00:32:42The RDA
00:32:42has woken up
00:32:42the space
00:32:43underneath the chassis.
00:32:45There's those
00:32:45suspension mounts
00:32:46right in front
00:32:46that bring it wide
00:32:47and I think that
00:32:48was the main reason
00:32:48for putting that
00:32:49tusk nose on it
00:32:50to again
00:32:50open up the
00:32:52airflow beneath
00:32:52the car
00:32:53but, well,
00:32:54it hasn't worked.
00:32:55That is for sure.
00:32:57They have got
00:32:58that nose here,
00:32:58by the way.
00:32:59I've seen it
00:32:59was on the T-car,
00:33:00the spare car,
00:33:01chassis sat in
00:33:02the middle
00:33:02of the two race cars
00:33:03so if they did
00:33:05encounter problems
00:33:05they could change
00:33:06back to the old
00:33:07spec but,
00:33:07and remember,
00:33:08of course,
00:33:08they haven't really
00:33:09had time to do
00:33:09an awful lot
00:33:10of testing development
00:33:10on it because
00:33:11of that compulsory
00:33:12layoff period
00:33:13from Germany
00:33:13to here as far
00:33:14as testing is
00:33:15concerned.
00:33:15Well,
00:33:16he could be,
00:33:16he could,
00:33:17he could snatch
00:33:17that P1 away
00:33:19from Alonso
00:33:19depending on
00:33:20how that last
00:33:20corner goes.
00:33:24Bumps Raikkonen
00:33:25and Weber
00:33:26and Coulthard
00:33:27and so on.
00:33:28I think the biggest
00:33:29problem they had
00:33:29with that nose
00:33:30was,
00:33:31if you remember,
00:33:31think back to Monaco,
00:33:32they had a little
00:33:33accelerometer
00:33:34strapped to the nose
00:33:35during one of the
00:33:35practice sessions
00:33:36because it was
00:33:36flexing so much
00:33:37and I think
00:33:38they've changed it
00:33:39to stop that.
00:33:40Remember,
00:33:40this is a high
00:33:40downforce track.
00:33:42Mario Tyson
00:33:43looking on,
00:33:44BMW's engine guru.
00:33:46We'll be back
00:33:46in just a moment
00:33:47with Yarno Trulli
00:33:48and Renault.
00:33:52Welcome back
00:33:53to the Hungaro
00:33:54Ring.
00:33:55I hope qualifying
00:33:56for Sunday's
00:33:58Formula One
00:33:58Grand Prix of Hungary
00:33:59round 13
00:34:00of the Formula One
00:34:01season.
00:34:01This is Yarno Trulli,
00:34:02the only man
00:34:03other than Michael
00:34:03Schumacher
00:34:04to win a race
00:34:04this year
00:34:06as he concludes
00:34:07his Renault career.
00:34:08Oh, drops on the
00:34:10camera lens.
00:34:12Maybe Alonzo,
00:34:13he's going to be
00:34:14on the pole again.
00:34:15Oh, and substantial
00:34:16raindrops on the
00:34:17onboard.
00:34:23Trulli has an
00:34:24opportunity here.
00:34:26He's quicker than
00:34:26his teammate and he
00:34:28may be the last guy
00:34:29on a dry track.
00:34:30Oh, and of course,
00:34:34he's got a point to
00:34:35prove he's been
00:34:36dropped by Renault
00:34:37in spite of that
00:34:38magnificent pole and
00:34:39win at Monte Carlo
00:34:40because he made that
00:34:41terrible mistake on the
00:34:42last lap in France.
00:34:44He's just absolutely
00:34:45put on a non-grata
00:34:47now.
00:34:47Well, he also
00:34:48declined to renew his
00:34:49personal management
00:34:50contract with his
00:34:51team manager,
00:34:52Flavio Briatore,
00:34:53who also said that
00:34:55Trulli and Alonzo
00:34:55have become too
00:34:56friendly in the team.
00:34:58We need more
00:34:59competition.
00:34:59We need more
00:35:00rivalry, says Flavio.
00:35:02I don't understand
00:35:03that one, but a lot
00:35:04of what Flavio says,
00:35:05I don't understand,
00:35:06but his success
00:35:06speaks for itself.
00:35:12Oh, no.
00:35:16Flavio will sleep
00:35:17even better tonight
00:35:19as Alonzo out
00:35:20qualifies truly.
00:35:23Now, what about
00:35:24those raindrops?
00:35:35Rumors that
00:35:35Yano, of course,
00:35:36is going to go
00:35:37to Toyota next year
00:35:38to join Ralph
00:35:39Schumacher.
00:35:40He's definitely
00:35:41going, wow.
00:35:42Oh, that's what
00:35:43slowed him up there.
00:35:44He just got too much
00:35:44air under the guy.
00:35:45He's got that curve
00:35:46just running on the way
00:35:47in.
00:35:52Tried to steal
00:35:53a little bit too much,
00:35:54didn't he?
00:35:54That's what
00:35:55pulled him out.
00:35:56I just couldn't
00:35:57come up with a way
00:35:57to start talking
00:35:58about Jensen,
00:35:59but he has been
00:36:00in the news
00:36:00so much over
00:36:01the last three weeks.
00:36:03The journalist's
00:36:03best friend,
00:36:05although he has
00:36:05certainly been
00:36:06in a very, very
00:36:07uncomfortable
00:36:08personal situation,
00:36:09announcing he is
00:36:10definitely going
00:36:10to be a Williams
00:36:11driver, having the
00:36:12BAR team say,
00:36:13no, you're not.
00:36:14I still wish
00:36:15I'd been there
00:36:16when he arrived
00:36:16at the center.
00:36:17at the racetrack
00:36:18on Wednesday,
00:36:19walked into the
00:36:20team.
00:36:21Hello, Bob!
00:36:22It's been met
00:36:23by our ice
00:36:23and imagine
00:36:24a completely
00:36:25stone-cold silence.
00:36:27No truth
00:36:27to the rumor
00:36:28that Jensen
00:36:28is rushing
00:36:29off to Athens
00:36:30to be Britain's
00:36:31representative
00:36:32in the Olympic
00:36:32team-jumping
00:36:33competition.
00:36:36Oh, very good,
00:36:37Bob.
00:36:37Look, quick
00:36:38on that sector.
00:36:41The team
00:36:42had their
00:36:44appeal against
00:36:44the front torque
00:36:45transfer system.
00:36:46Remember that
00:36:46drive shaft system
00:36:47they put on the
00:36:48car, a copy of
00:36:50what Benetton
00:36:50were doing in
00:36:5199, but that
00:36:52has been turned
00:36:52down by the FIA
00:36:53and rejected.
00:36:54You are not to
00:36:55use that system
00:36:56again, BAR.
00:36:57Fastest man in the
00:36:58morning sessions
00:36:58and provisional
00:36:59poll for Jensen
00:37:00Button.
00:37:01Dave Richards
00:37:02says, we're all
00:37:03professionals.
00:37:03There will be no
00:37:05emotion displayed
00:37:06in the garage,
00:37:07although we have
00:37:08it on good
00:37:08authority that
00:37:09Takuma Sato
00:37:10suddenly became
00:37:11much more the
00:37:12object of the
00:37:13team's attention
00:37:14this weekend.
00:37:16Old Jensen
00:37:17Button had to
00:37:17buckle himself
00:37:18into his race
00:37:18car.
00:37:20Takuma Sato
00:37:20was quicker
00:37:21than Button
00:37:21in the first
00:37:22round of
00:37:22qualifying.
00:37:23An hour or so
00:37:24ago, there's
00:37:25Mario Tyson,
00:37:26who of course
00:37:27is going to be
00:37:27working with
00:37:28Jensen
00:37:28Button next year
00:37:29by the look of
00:37:29him.
00:37:29Not so fast.
00:37:31Not so fast.
00:37:32The lawyers
00:37:32haven't finished
00:37:33yet.
00:37:33Boy, there's
00:37:33going to be
00:37:34some money
00:37:34going around
00:37:35there in
00:37:35those lawyers
00:37:35bucket.
00:37:37Juan Pablo
00:37:38Montuva,
00:37:38who is also
00:37:39moving, of course,
00:37:40next year to
00:37:40McLeod.
00:37:43He supposedly
00:37:44went apprised
00:37:46of Jensen
00:37:46Button's
00:37:47situation.
00:37:48He said he
00:37:49lost his
00:37:49mind to
00:37:51come here.
00:37:53Well, of course,
00:37:54he would say
00:37:54that, wouldn't
00:37:55he?
00:37:58But, oh,
00:37:59and Montoya's
00:38:00quick.
00:38:01Williams might
00:38:02not be having
00:38:02the best season
00:38:03and certainly
00:38:03that's the
00:38:04case, but
00:38:04they are.
00:38:05They're one
00:38:06of the big
00:38:06three, one
00:38:07of the three
00:38:07greatest teams
00:38:08in Formula One
00:38:09history.
00:38:10You can't
00:38:10discount
00:38:11Williams
00:38:11for coming
00:38:11back.
00:38:13But Montoya's
00:38:14a little
00:38:14hard now.
00:38:17And Jensen
00:38:18Button is
00:38:18not.
00:38:19I mean,
00:38:19he's going
00:38:19to get just
00:38:20run over
00:38:20by Mark
00:38:21Webber and
00:38:22Patrick
00:38:23Head and
00:38:24of course
00:38:24Sam
00:38:25Michaels.
00:38:28Ooh,
00:38:28slower in
00:38:29that sector.
00:38:31If you
00:38:32take out
00:38:32Bannerton's
00:38:33little blip
00:38:33in the
00:38:33middle of
00:38:34the 90s,
00:38:3494 and
00:38:3595,
00:38:35taking
00:38:36those
00:38:36driver and
00:38:36constructors
00:38:37championship
00:38:3795,
00:38:38it's been
00:38:39McLaren,
00:38:39Williams and
00:38:40Ferrari that
00:38:40have won
00:38:41every championship
00:38:41for about
00:38:4220 years.
00:38:44So, I mean,
00:38:44that must be
00:38:45in the back
00:38:45of Button's
00:38:45mind,
00:38:46thinking,
00:38:46well,
00:38:46this should
00:38:47be,
00:38:47must be,
00:38:47a great
00:38:48Formula One
00:38:48team.
00:38:50Wow,
00:38:51lost a lot
00:38:51of it.
00:38:52Mario Tyson
00:38:53absolutely
00:38:53splitting his
00:38:54face out,
00:38:55that huge
00:38:55smile.
00:38:56Slower than
00:38:56Antonio
00:38:57Pisonja.
00:38:59Now,
00:38:59that's
00:38:59interesting.
00:39:01Williams have
00:39:02not had a
00:39:02podium finish
00:39:03in a race
00:39:03in the last
00:39:04eight rounds
00:39:05since that
00:39:06man,
00:39:06Montoya,
00:39:06did it at
00:39:07Imola,
00:39:08Grand Prix
00:39:08of San
00:39:09Marino.
00:39:11Of course,
00:39:11they won
00:39:11the first
00:39:12two races
00:39:12in 86-87,
00:39:14won again
00:39:14in 90
00:39:15with Thierry
00:39:15Bootsen,
00:39:1793 with
00:39:18Damone Hill.
00:39:20The podium
00:39:21at Canada
00:39:22was lost
00:39:23to disqualification
00:39:24for illegal
00:39:24brake ducts
00:39:25on the car.
00:39:27Just another
00:39:28embarrassing
00:39:29moment for
00:39:29Williams in
00:39:30what has been
00:39:30a very tough
00:39:31year.
00:39:32We'll be
00:39:32back in
00:39:33just a
00:39:33moment
00:39:33for
00:39:34Takuma
00:39:34Sato.
00:39:38Welcome
00:39:38back.
00:39:39Five drivers
00:39:40yet to
00:39:40qualify for
00:39:41Sunday's
00:39:42Grand Prix
00:39:42of Hungary.
00:39:44Let's look
00:39:44at some
00:39:45World Feed
00:39:45highlights.
00:39:46Watch
00:39:46Jarno truly
00:39:46launch the
00:39:47Renault over
00:39:48these curves.
00:39:48He just
00:39:49got that one
00:39:50a bit early.
00:39:51Now,
00:39:51be sure to
00:39:52join us
00:39:52tomorrow morning
00:39:53for live
00:39:53coverage of
00:39:54the Hungarian
00:39:54Grand Prix.
00:39:55We'll begin
00:39:55at 7.30 a.m.
00:39:57Eastern with
00:39:57the Acura
00:39:58Free Race Show
00:39:58featuring Peter
00:39:59Windsor.
00:39:59This week
00:40:00Peter will
00:40:01try to shed
00:40:01some light
00:40:01on the
00:40:02silly season
00:40:02which grows
00:40:03sillier every
00:40:04day it
00:40:04seems.
00:40:04That's
00:40:05tomorrow
00:40:05morning at
00:40:057.30
00:40:06Eastern,
00:40:06live on
00:40:07speed but
00:40:08subject to
00:40:08blackout.
00:40:10He actually
00:40:10did a good
00:40:11job of
00:40:11hanging on
00:40:12to that.
00:40:12He did
00:40:12because I
00:40:13tell you
00:40:13what,
00:40:13that lost
00:40:14him a
00:40:14huge amount
00:40:15of momentum
00:40:15because that
00:40:15was quite
00:40:16a quick
00:40:16straight
00:40:17after that
00:40:17corner and
00:40:18he came
00:40:19on so
00:40:19slow.
00:40:19You,
00:40:20Dozie,
00:40:21whatever,
00:40:22what are
00:40:22you thinking
00:40:23about?
00:40:26Yeah.
00:40:27Well,
00:40:28I still
00:40:28imagine he's
00:40:29a better
00:40:29driver than
00:40:29Flavio
00:40:30Briatore.
00:40:32Which Mike
00:40:33Gascoigne
00:40:34himself
00:40:34confirmed
00:40:34when he
00:40:35tried to
00:40:35take the
00:40:35Jordan up
00:40:36the hill
00:40:36at Goodwood
00:40:36in England.
00:40:37Took it
00:40:38about 30
00:40:38feet and
00:40:39stuck it
00:40:39in the
00:40:39hay bales.
00:40:41Tsukuma
00:40:41Sato.
00:40:44Terrifies
00:40:44of being
00:40:45removed.
00:40:47This will
00:40:48be an
00:40:48interesting
00:40:49intra-team
00:40:49battle.
00:40:50That man,
00:40:51David Richards,
00:40:52no doubt
00:40:52pulling for
00:40:53Tsukuma,
00:40:54his Japanese
00:40:55protege.
00:40:56David Richards
00:40:57also runs the
00:40:58World Rally
00:40:59Championship.
00:40:59He was at
00:41:00the most
00:41:00recent round,
00:41:01the Rally
00:41:01Finland,
00:41:02where he
00:41:02was found
00:41:03in deep
00:41:04personal
00:41:05discussion
00:41:05with two-time
00:41:07former Formula
00:41:08One World
00:41:08Champion,
00:41:09Mika Hakkinen.
00:41:10Hakkinen then
00:41:11went to
00:41:11finish television
00:41:12and said
00:41:12about the
00:41:13rumors that
00:41:14he might end
00:41:14his return
00:41:15to Grand Prix
00:41:16racing.
00:41:16Well,
00:41:17there's no
00:41:18smoke without
00:41:18fire,
00:41:19but that's
00:41:19all I'll
00:41:20say for
00:41:20right now.
00:41:23Putting the
00:41:23match to
00:41:24the
00:41:24tinderwood.
00:41:25Interesting
00:41:25experiment,
00:41:26I suppose,
00:41:26to have
00:41:26Mika back,
00:41:27but two
00:41:28years out
00:41:28of this
00:41:29level,
00:41:30very difficult
00:41:31to pick up,
00:41:31especially as he
00:41:32was kind of
00:41:33demotivated towards
00:41:34the end of his
00:41:34run with the
00:41:35clown anyway.
00:41:36Right.
00:41:38It just
00:41:39wasn't fun
00:41:39anymore.
00:41:40Michael
00:41:41Schumacher
00:41:41getting ready.
00:41:43He'll be the
00:41:43penultimate man
00:41:44on track,
00:41:45followed by his
00:41:46teammate Rubens
00:41:46Barichello.
00:41:47Boy,
00:41:48that time of
00:41:48Rubens was
00:41:49absolutely
00:41:50extraordinary.
00:41:51What is that
00:41:51adjustment you
00:41:52reckon,
00:41:52Steve?
00:41:52That'll be
00:41:53brake bias
00:41:53adjustment.
00:41:56As far as
00:41:56any of those
00:41:57adjustments are
00:41:57anywhere but
00:41:58the steering
00:41:58wheel.
00:41:58Well,
00:41:59the reason for
00:41:59that,
00:42:00it's a
00:42:01legality
00:42:01requirement
00:42:01from the
00:42:02FIA.
00:42:03Going back
00:42:03to the
00:42:0393 season,
00:42:04which was
00:42:05the all-sing
00:42:05and all-dancing
00:42:06season for
00:42:06technology on
00:42:07the cars,
00:42:07and we used
00:42:08to have
00:42:08ABS system
00:42:09and
00:42:09anti-lock
00:42:09brake
00:42:09system built
00:42:11into the
00:42:11cars.
00:42:12For the
00:42:12start of
00:42:12the 94
00:42:13season,
00:42:13Max Mosley
00:42:14in the
00:42:14FIA said,
00:42:14you know,
00:42:15I think
00:42:16we should
00:42:16absolutely
00:42:17ban ABS
00:42:18because it's
00:42:19allowing the
00:42:20cars to
00:42:21work a lot
00:42:21better and
00:42:22seems quite
00:42:22safe,
00:42:22so we'll
00:42:23scrap that
00:42:24and we'll
00:42:24force the
00:42:25drivers to
00:42:25adjust the
00:42:26brake bias
00:42:26with the
00:42:27cable.
00:42:27You're not
00:42:27allowed to
00:42:28use any
00:42:28electronics
00:42:29on the
00:42:29car at
00:42:29all,
00:42:30which is
00:42:30really the
00:42:31get-out
00:42:31of how
00:42:32the FIA
00:42:32managed to
00:42:33get the
00:42:33front-torque
00:42:34transfer
00:42:34system
00:42:35banned
00:42:35because
00:42:36BAR
00:42:36put
00:42:37hydraulics
00:42:37and
00:42:38electronic
00:42:38of that
00:42:38time
00:42:39there.
00:42:39Good,
00:42:39bit quicker
00:42:40than his
00:42:40teammate
00:42:40Jenson
00:42:41Button.
00:42:41Two tricky
00:42:42sectors to
00:42:43come,
00:42:43and he
00:42:43was 183
00:42:44mile an
00:42:44hour down
00:42:45the
00:42:45straight.
00:42:45Surprisingly
00:42:46slow
00:42:46with that
00:42:47Honda
00:42:47oomph
00:42:48behind him.
00:42:49Now,
00:42:49his teammate
00:42:49Jenson
00:42:50Button
00:42:50was
00:42:50incredibly
00:42:51quick
00:42:52through
00:42:52the
00:42:52second
00:42:52sector
00:42:53of the
00:42:53track
00:42:53which
00:42:53we're
00:42:53on
00:42:54now,
00:42:54so let's
00:42:54see
00:42:55how
00:42:55Sato reacts
00:42:56to
00:42:56Button's
00:42:57performance
00:42:57through
00:42:57sector
00:42:58two.
00:43:00Car
00:43:01looks
00:43:01pretty
00:43:01stable,
00:43:01doesn't it?
00:43:02It looks
00:43:02stable.
00:43:03Whoa!
00:43:03Right up
00:43:04until he
00:43:04went off
00:43:05the
00:43:05track.
00:43:06That is
00:43:06totaled
00:43:07the
00:43:07car.
00:43:08Boy,
00:43:08I tell
00:43:09you what.
00:43:09We nearly
00:43:09called that
00:43:10right,
00:43:10David
00:43:10Omms.
00:43:11Words

00:43:14But
00:43:15he

00:43:17This

00:43:18does
00:43:18not

00:43:20He
00:43:20does

00:43:22There's
00:43:22no doubt
00:43:23about
00:43:23it.
00:43:24That
00:43:25overtaking
00:43:25maneuver
00:43:26he did
00:43:26in

00:43:27Wow!

00:43:31Go ahead,

00:43:32smile.
00:43:32Go ahead.
00:43:33We know
00:43:34you want

00:43:35With

00:43:36he nearly
00:43:37screwed
00:43:37that lap

00:43:38He nearly
00:43:39threw
00:43:39it off
00:43:39the
00:43:39track.
00:43:40It
00:43:40couldn't
00:43:41have
00:43:41got
00:43:41much
00:43:41closer.
00:43:42Sacra

00:43:43Wow,
00:43:44that's
00:43:44fantastic.
00:43:45He
00:43:46was

00:43:48just

00:43:48whether
00:43:48he
00:43:49could

00:43:50The

00:49:12I don't
00:49:13think
00:49:13Schumacher
00:49:13can
00:49:14mathematically
00:49:14secure the
00:49:15championship
00:49:15of this
00:49:16race
00:49:16but if
00:49:17he wins
00:49:17it's
00:49:17pretty much
00:49:18technically
00:49:18over the
00:49:19only the
00:49:19guy that
00:49:19can take
00:49:20a shot
00:49:21at the
00:49:21championship
00:49:22will be
00:49:22his teammate
00:49:23Barrichello
00:49:23well that
00:49:24ain't gonna
00:49:24happen
00:49:24let's face
00:49:25it is
00:49:25it
00:49:25so
00:49:26Michael
00:49:27gets a
00:49:27fantastic
00:49:28race
00:49:28performance
00:49:29here
00:49:29which is
00:49:29quite
00:49:29possible
00:49:31he's
00:49:31going to
00:49:31pretty much
00:49:32lock that
00:49:32championship
00:49:32up
00:49:33he would
00:49:33love to
00:49:33do
00:49:34that
00:49:55he won
00:49:57by half
00:49:58a second
00:49:59oh my
00:50:00almost exactly
00:50:02the same
00:50:02time as
00:50:02he did
00:50:03this morning
00:50:03in 19-1

00:50:13boy
00:50:14there's a
00:50:15magazine called
00:50:15F1 Racing
00:50:16that recently
00:50:17did a
00:50:17profile of
00:50:18life at
00:50:19the Ferrari
00:50:19factory in
00:50:20Marinello
00:50:20and how
00:50:21after each
00:50:22Ferrari
00:50:22victory
00:50:23the entire
00:50:23factory
00:50:24staff is
00:50:25invited to
00:50:25the race
00:50:25team
00:50:26headquarters
00:50:26for a
00:50:27celebratory
00:50:28brunch
00:50:28and we're
00:50:30talking about
00:50:30Ferrari
00:50:31I mean
00:50:32years ago
00:50:32they used
00:50:33to be
00:50:33the poster
00:50:34children
00:50:35for
00:50:35ridiculous
00:50:37pit stops
00:50:38and confusion
00:50:39and court
00:50:40intrigue
00:50:41and all that
00:50:42sort of thing
00:50:42now
00:50:42they are
00:50:43a complete
00:50:44machine
00:50:44well-oiled
00:50:45everyone
00:50:46knowing their
00:50:46job
00:50:46everyone
00:50:47appreciating
00:50:47everyone
00:50:48else
00:50:49the turnaround
00:50:50at Ferrari
00:50:51has just
00:50:51been extraordinary
00:50:52it's a
00:50:53combination
00:50:53of Teutonic
00:50:54and British
00:50:54efficiency
00:50:57Italian
00:50:58passion
00:50:58I'll have
00:50:59you know
00:50:59yeah we
00:51:00can't
00:51:00discount
00:51:00the Italians
00:51:01David
00:51:01British
00:51:02taking over
00:51:02the management
00:51:03oh
00:51:03Barrichello
00:51:05does he
00:51:06have time
00:51:06in reserve
00:51:07it looks like
00:51:07this is
00:51:08very important
00:51:09for Schumacher
00:51:09because it
00:51:10puts him
00:51:10on the dirty
00:51:10side of the
00:51:11track here
00:51:11which is
00:51:12very very
00:51:13important
00:51:13he does
00:51:14not want
00:51:14to be
00:51:14P2
00:51:17Barrichello
00:51:17is just
00:51:17one mile
00:51:18an hour
00:51:19slower
00:51:19than his
00:51:20teammate
00:51:20through the
00:51:21speed trap
00:51:21he was
00:51:22seven tenths
00:51:23quicker on
00:51:24the first
00:51:24lap
00:51:24so he
00:51:25has
00:51:25some
00:51:25time
00:51:25to
00:51:26play
00:51:26with
00:51:27that
00:51:28one mile
00:51:28an hour
00:51:29could well
00:51:29be
00:51:30just a tad
00:51:30more fuel
00:51:31in the car
00:51:31to allow
00:51:32them to
00:51:32pit
00:51:32on
00:51:33separate
00:51:33lines
00:51:34actually
00:51:34slower
00:51:34in that
00:51:35sector
00:51:35all right
00:51:36the conspiracy
00:51:37theorists
00:51:38are warming
00:51:38up
00:51:39I can
00:51:39hear it
00:51:39now
00:51:40they told
00:51:41him
00:51:41not to
00:51:41out
00:51:41qualify
00:51:42Michael
00:51:45we're
00:51:46wide
00:51:46there
00:51:46on the
00:51:47exit
00:51:48wide
00:51:49here
00:51:49it's
00:51:49going to
00:51:49be
00:51:50very
00:51:50very
00:51:50very
00:51:51close
00:51:51come
00:51:52on
00:51:52push
00:51:52him
00:51:53push
00:51:53him
00:51:57he had
00:51:57a good

00:51:58at it
00:51:59he had
00:51:59a good
00:52:00shot
00:52:00big relief
00:52:01from everybody
00:52:01in the team
00:52:03I'm pretty
00:52:03sure that
00:52:04time
00:52:04difference
00:52:04there will
00:52:05be just
00:52:05the fuel
00:52:06between the
00:52:06two pitstop
00:52:07windows
00:52:07so that
00:52:08they're not
00:52:08stacking the
00:52:09pitstops
00:52:09on the
00:52:09same
00:52:10lap
00:52:10but
00:52:11wow
00:52:11he had
00:52:12a good
00:52:12go
00:52:12at it
00:52:12didn't
00:52:12he
00:52:13he did
00:52:15heck of a
00:52:15go
00:52:15of it
00:52:16but you

00:52:23you have to
00:52:23wonder
00:52:24I'm
00:52:25wondering
00:52:25yep
00:52:26that's the
00:52:26fourth time
00:52:27this year
00:52:27that Ferrari
00:52:28have been
00:52:28one and
00:52:28two
00:52:29on the
00:52:29grid
00:52:31now let's
00:52:32see how

00:52:33Rubens
00:52:33is on
00:52:34this
00:52:34in-lap
00:52:34we've

00:56:05I guess
00:56:06the best

00:56:06is what
00:56:07a difference
00:56:07a year

00:56:11this year
00:56:11an all
00:56:16significantly
00:56:16better
00:56:18we obviously
00:56:19worked very
00:56:19hard for
00:56:20that result
00:56:21all
00:56:22gave a
00:56:23big push
00:56:23during
00:56:24the last
00:56:25testing
00:56:25session
00:56:25we had
00:56:26particularly
00:56:26in Jerez
00:56:27where it
00:56:27was very
00:56:27hot
00:56:28and it
00:56:28was
00:56:28a great
00:56:29preparation
00:56:30we have
00:56:30done there
00:56:31for Hockenheim
00:56:31and for
00:56:32Hungary
00:56:33and that's
00:56:34the result
00:56:34that's why
00:56:35we're there
00:56:36and just
00:56:37a great
00:56:38effort
00:56:38from everyone
00:56:39What does
00:56:40the grid
00:56:40look like
00:56:41from your
00:56:41point of
00:56:41view
00:56:41are you
00:56:42surprised
00:56:42by the
00:56:42way
00:56:43the grid
00:56:43is
00:56:43shaping
00:56:46no
00:56:47not really
00:56:48honestly
00:56:48I guess
00:56:51that's what
00:56:52you should have
00:56:53expected
00:56:53with the exception
00:56:55of the McLaren's
00:56:56I expect them
00:56:57a little bit
00:56:57faster
00:56:58but maybe
00:56:58they run
00:56:59on different
00:56:59strategy
00:57:00we find out
00:57:01tomorrow
00:57:02but in
00:57:03general
00:57:03you had to
00:57:04expect
00:57:05the BARs
00:57:06to be quick
00:57:06and the
00:57:07Reynos
00:57:07to be quick
00:57:09well done
00:57:10Rubens
00:57:11looked like a
00:57:12great qualifying
00:57:12lap there
00:57:13talk us through
00:57:13the pole was
00:57:14there
00:57:15perhaps for the
00:57:15taking
00:57:16no
00:57:17it was
00:57:17it was
00:57:18all together
00:57:18a good
00:57:18lap
00:57:19I mean
00:57:19it's
00:57:20a little
00:57:20bit
00:57:20disappointing
00:57:21not to
00:57:22have it
00:57:22because
00:57:22this morning
00:57:24although
00:57:25the track
00:57:25was different
00:57:26from when
00:57:27Michael was
00:57:27out
00:57:27it was
00:57:28a really
00:57:28good
00:57:28lap
00:57:29this
00:57:29morning
00:57:29so
00:57:30but
00:57:31everything
00:57:31was running
00:57:31quite smooth
00:57:32I mean
00:57:32we knew
00:57:33that
00:57:33we were
00:57:34going to
00:57:34be
00:57:34very
00:57:36much
00:57:36together
00:57:37so
00:57:37it
00:57:38was
00:57:38going
00:57:38to
00:57:38be
00:57:38one
00:57:39side
00:57:39but
00:57:39I
00:57:39think
00:57:40he
00:57:40did
00:57:40a
00:57:40fantastic

00:57:41just
00:57:41to
00:57:42really
00:57:42do
00:57:43a
00:57:43perfect
00:57:44one
00:57:44I missed
00:57:45a little
00:57:46bit
00:57:46towards
00:57:46the
00:57:47end
00:57:47of
00:57:47the
00:57:47lap
00:57:48but
00:57:48even
00:57:48so
00:57:49I'm
00:57:49happy
00:57:49the
00:57:49lap
00:57:50wasn't
00:57:50too
00:57:50bad

00:57:52on the
00:57:52dirty
00:57:53side
00:57:53of the
00:57:53grid
00:57:53there
00:57:53Yeah
00:57:54that's
00:57:55one
00:57:55of the
00:57:55worst
00:57:57P2
00:57:57of
00:57:57the

00:57:59because
00:57:59it's

00:58:02on
00:58:02that
00:58:02side
00:58:03but
00:58:04I
00:58:04think
