00:14because the rest of the defense has been really good.
00:16They're rushing the passer well.
00:18They're stopping the run very well.
00:19They're just not covering well, and it's pretty disappointing,
00:23especially when you think about Jim Leonard and his pedigree
00:26and also just the players that they have.
00:28It shouldn't be a talent issue, right?
00:30You've got high draft picks.
00:32You've got paid veterans, guys that you specifically went
00:34and got like a C.J. Garner-Johnson, like a D. Alford.
00:38You drafted Igbenosin.
00:40Bishop's a good young player.
00:41Benford's a good young player.
00:43Harrison's a first-round pick.
00:44There's enough talent back there,
00:45especially when you're rushing the passer well.
00:47They're just not very consistent with how they communicate
00:50and play together.
00:51The Patriots did a really good job of stressing their ability
00:54to communicate and play together with a lot of bunch sets,
00:57a lot of switch releases, and you see this bill secondary.
01:00They're talking to each other, and the ball snapped, right?
01:03They're just not on the same page, and that's got to change.
01:07And look, since I don't really think it's a major talent issue,
01:10I think it just comes down to reps and time on task, right?
01:13This is a team that is playing a ton of zone coverage.
01:16We expected them to play a lot more man.
01:18They haven't.
01:18They've been very, very zone-heavy,
01:20and that becomes more of a deal where it's about guys playing together
01:26and spacing the field well and squeezing routes and passing them off,
01:30and you can tell it's just a disjointed group
01:31that doesn't have time together.
01:33And, Jeremy, when I think about this offseason training camp in particular,
01:38these guys missed a ton of time.
01:40Cole Bishop was out from August 8th through August 18th.
01:43C.J. Gardner-Johnson was out from August 1st to August 6th,
01:46and then again from August 10th to September 1st.
01:49Terrell Bernard missed from August 24th to September 1st.
01:51Max Harrison missed from August 6th to August 18th.
01:54So you just have a bunch of guys that,
01:56when they were in the most foundational parts of playing together
01:59and learning the coverage schemes and getting those reps,
02:02they weren't together, right?
02:03It mattered a ton that they missed that time,
02:06especially with it being year one with a rookie defensive coordinator.
02:09So I think it's explainable.
02:10I think they have talent, but they've got to start turning the page here
02:14because it's disappointing to see them function so well rushing the passer,
02:17so well stopping the run, they just can't cover.
