"TOP 5" Former Patriots QB Brian Hoyer, says Tom Brady would be TOP 5- If he came back and played today. Thoughts?
Transcript
00:00Brian, you know the thing that I really liked about Drake,
00:03especially in this game, is that touchdown pass that he threw to Chisholm.
00:09If you go back and you look at the weekly breakdown that I had on J-Wigs 85.
00:13Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:15Brian does an awful lot of breakdowns.
00:16I don't know why he'd be looking at your break.
00:19Well, I mean, it's always good to, you know,
00:20you always want to see what other people are doing.
00:23All 22 crew.
00:24Yeah, he has all 22 crew.
00:26But the one thing that I really liked from –
00:28He spelled all wrong.
00:29Go ahead.
00:30The one thing that I really liked from Drake May is his recognition
00:34of seeing that safety capped off, I mean, that corner capped off by the safety
00:39and understanding, okay, there's going to be pressure there.
00:42That's why he had that nice little rollout, and he was able to hit Chisholm on that.
00:46How much easier does it make it for you as a quarterback
00:49when you can recognize things pre-snap?
00:53Yeah, and look, I don't want to digress into this too much,
00:56but everyone gets obsessed with, oh, there's more motion, there's more all of this.
01:01Look, in every game plan, depending on who you're playing,
01:04Josh is going to put shifts in motion to be able to –
01:07first and foremost, you don't do it unless you can gain advantage from it.
01:10So a lot of times it's to set the front to run the ball a certain way.
01:14A lot of times it's to shift the slot receiver to know if the stars –
01:18the nickel's coming.
01:19So you do all of those things, and it's kind of crossing things off on your checklist,
01:23and that's where you're able to figure out, okay, what's the defense doing?
01:26And by the way, I think over 14 of the motions in the game were just the receiver
01:30coming down to block the safety because they're never going to run into an unblocked safety.
01:33So those numbers can get convoluted a little bit.
01:36But you're right.
01:37When you're the quarterback and you're playing in this Josh McDaniels offense,
01:40he is trying to give you as many answers before the snap as you can.
01:44And you mentioned it.
01:45Drake sees the pressure, but he knows he has Chisholm one-on-one.
01:47Chisholm runs a great little curl-pump route.
01:50And it actually became a harder throw than having to be in the pocket
01:54because when you're rolling right and the receiver's going vertically,
01:57now you have to kind of throw it back across your body.
01:59So a really confident throw, a great route by Chisholm.
02:03I mean, I don't know if you can – obviously there's been a lot of hype around Chisholm
02:06since he got here because we all love the small white slot receivers here in New England
02:10going back to Welker and Edelman and Dola and all these guys.
02:13But he has done everything, and he's not even playing in a slot on that play.
02:16He's learned every wide receiver position.
02:19He's learned from the guys in the room.
02:21He's learned from Todd Downing.
02:22He's learned from Josh.
02:23And clearly Drake has a lot of confidence in him.
02:25So it's just one of those things where all those factors come together,
02:28and it's a game-winning play.
02:30Brian, a texter would like to thank you for being very friendly to them
02:35and their 7-year-old at Costco on Saturday.
02:39Okay.
02:40And they are suggesting that you were loading up on toilet paper.
02:43Is that like a plague response to what's going on in Russia?
02:48You know, I was a bit of a COVID hoarder, I'm not going to lie,
02:51and I was one of the early ones to stock up.
02:53I didn't even – this was before I think the plague news came out,
02:56so I may have to go back to Costco pretty soon.
02:58But, hey, that's a great place to get your toilet paper, just FYI.
03:01It is.
03:02And a great place to chat about the All-22 when you're getting things for number two.
03:06That's right.
03:07There you go.
03:09I think this has turned into a Charmin ad or something.
03:11I know.
03:11We've got to get it sponsored.
03:13What did you make – I love the Vrabel approach going up against Josh Allen,
03:17being aggressive on fourth down.
03:19What did you make of their offensive approach against the Bills?
03:22I mean, I loved it from the first drive all the way to the last, right?
03:25I think when you go into Buffalo, knowing you're playing against Josh Allen,
03:29you have to be very aggressive.
03:31Field goals aren't going to cut it.
03:32So they go for it on fourth down on the first drive.
03:34And all the way to the end, when you get the interception
03:36and you're going to seal the deal, they throw it twice.
03:39I don't think anybody could have guessed that.
03:40And let's just call it what it is.
03:43Vrabel is giving Josh the okay to do that.
03:45He's saying, let's end the game.
03:47Call whatever play you think is going to end the game.
03:48And so they go for the two passes.
03:50And the thing that I saw was not the actual execution of the play.
03:56Go back and watch the reaction from the sideline.
03:58As Hunter Henry catches the ball and is taken for a first down,
04:01the entire sideline erupts.
04:03It just goes to build that confidence.
04:05It shows Vrabel has the confidence in the players to execute.
04:08And when you do it, now it just starts ramping back up.
04:11And so there's an eerily similar feeling, I think, this year to how last year started off.
04:17I don't think we thought they were going to struggle early in the year the way they did,
04:20particularly Drake.
04:21But now it's starting to, let's see if you can take what you did in Buffalo,
04:24similar to last year with that win that they had up there,
04:27and start to manufacture that confidence and build back up
04:30and obviously get some players healthy.
04:32I mean, they're doing this without A.J. Brown.
04:33They did it without Gonzalez.
04:35So there's probably two of your top players right there you're beating your division rival
04:39without those guys.
04:40So I think a lot of confidence going in, you've got to use that and harness it
04:44because, like I said, this Raiders team is not going to just be an easy knockoff.
04:48There's a new book out, and some in Tom Brady's inner circle of 300 people
04:56suggest that he would like to play one more year.
04:59Are you in that inner circle?
05:01And, I mean, we think you are.
05:05I'd like to think I am, but I don't think that I'm going to go along with the people
05:08who said that he wants to play another year.
05:09I mean, look, he's got so much going on, whether it's the ownership of the Raiders,
05:13whether it's the Fox deal.
05:15He has got plenty of going on.
05:17Trust me, I would love to play another year.
05:19If you told me that I could go out there and put flags around my waist
05:23and I wasn't going to get hit, I would play football until they told me I couldn't anymore.
05:27So I think we all, especially at the quarterback position,
05:31and I think the one thing about the quarterback position that allows you to
05:33at least think you can do it forever is because the mental side,
05:36every year you get a little bit better.
05:38Every year you learn more.
05:39And I think the mental actually goes up, whereas the physical starts to go down.
05:43And so I don't think that we'll see him suiting up ever again,
05:47maybe for his annual flag football game where they get absolutely roasted
05:52by the flag football players.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Right.
05:55Just play along.
05:56Obviously, I think you're right 1,000%.
05:58If he were to, though, where would he rank among the NFL quarterback?
06:04Wiggy and I were doing this the other day.
06:05Where would you put him today at 50 in the NFL if he was playing in the NFL?
06:10Top five.
06:11Top five?
06:12I mean, honestly, if he did, if he could withstand getting hits, I mean, it would be right.
06:20He'd be up there right by, you know, and this is the crazy part.
06:23I was going to say right with Stafford.
06:24You know who leads the league in interceptions this year?
06:27Drake May and Matt Stafford, the two guys who were in the top two to be the MVP.
06:31It just goes to show you every year is different.
06:33But with Tom's knowledge of the game and the way, and Wiggy, you know this, it's just like
06:38when he's on your team, everybody believes that you're going to win every single game.
06:42It's kind of, I was watching the thing with Steve Kerr talking about Jordan.
06:45It was just this emotional, uplifting environment.
06:50When he played quarterback, I don't care if it was 28 to 3 or if you were going, like,
06:54everyone believed that you were going to win the game.
06:56And I think he immediately brings that to any, I mean, that's what he did in Tampa.
06:59Go down and win the Super Bowl in the first year because guys are like, we got Tom Brady.
07:03Can you imagine him with Justin Jefferson in Minnesota and Jordan Addison and TJ Hawkinson
07:09and the fact that he has a relationship with the head coach and Kevin O'Connell
07:13and their defense has only given up 12 points a game.
07:17They're 4-0 and they're in the dome.
07:20And granted, I think he's going to get hit there, but he takes care of his body
07:23and his mental capacity.
07:24And I tell these people all the time, Brian, Bill Parcells told me this a long time ago.
07:28Football is 90% mental, 10% physical.
07:31And he is so smart and he'll be able to get the ball out.
07:34I still think he could do it at a completely – it would not shock me if he did come
07:38back
07:38because, like you said, I still think he'd be top five, top ten quarterbacks.
07:43I can't believe you can have him top five when he hasn't played in three years.
07:47It doesn't matter.
07:48I promise you, with the way that the game is played, that's why – look,
07:52that's why Case Keenum came out and played better than Caleb Williams.
07:54It's just a different level of understanding.
07:56It's a different way to play the game.
07:58These young guys today, it takes them a while because they rely on the athleticism,
08:02so you don't have to push yourself to learn mentally.
08:05And I think that's just where the advantage is.
08:07By the way, look, he keeps himself in shape, Wiggy,
08:10but now it's for these thirst-strapped pictures on Instagram.
08:12So it's not really taken.
08:14But still, it's a different type of in-shape.
08:16Let's just call it what it is.
08:17Phillip Rivers rolled off the couch with a dad bod and –
08:20Well, he's also thirst-strapping.
08:22Yeah, I mean, he's got 17 kids.
08:24He rolled off the couch and played.
08:26And, you know, it wasn't bad, but you're talking about Tom Brady.
08:29Yeah, wow.
08:29All right.
08:30That's right.
08:30Ryan, you like the Pats on Sunday?
08:33I do.
08:34I think they just carry over this momentum.
08:35I think, as you heard Drake say, this is a big relief.
08:38I think we just see him go back to being the player.
08:40And it wasn't perfect.
08:41There was plays there to be had.
08:43He said it.
08:43But I think right now it's just like the weight is off his shoulders.
08:47You'll see him play more relaxed.
08:48They've got to make sure that Crosby doesn't ruin the game.
08:51And then defensively, they've just got to basically do what they did
08:55with the Bills' tight ends.
08:56Don't let Bowers get going because that's the guy that Cousins really wants to go to.
08:59All right, Brian, thank you.
09:00We'll talk to you next week.
09:01All right.
09:02See you, guys.
09:02Okay.
09:02Brian Hoyer.
09:04Top five.
09:05Yeah.
09:06At age 50.
09:07I would agree with him.
09:07Think about it.
09:08Last year he played, he threw the ball 733 times,
09:11completed 67% of his passes, and threw for 4,700 yards.
09:15That was the last time he was on a football field.
09:17Yeah.
09:17Greg, who are you?
09:18I feel like that lady in first class right now.
09:20Who are your top five quarterbacks right now, in your opinion?
09:23Mahomes, Allen, one and two, however you want to do that.
09:27Whatever order.
09:27Just your top five guys.
09:28You know, I would, you guys love Lamar Jackson.
09:31I would put Lamar Jackson in there.
09:34I mean, where are you on, Drake?
09:37Matthew Stafford.
09:38Jeff Stafford.
09:39Joe Burrow.
09:40Greg, let me ask you this question.
09:42If you lie, I'm going to go in there and give you a pumpkin reeseed to the mouth.
09:46Yeah.
09:47You have to win one game Sunday.
09:50Drake, May, or Tom Brady.
09:51I would take Tom Brady.
09:52Okay.
09:53I would.
09:54And I would say over there.
09:56I would say like.
09:57All these people say, Tom Brady is not playing.
09:59This story is a nothing burger.
10:01Why do you talk about it?
10:02Because he told you a bunch of times that he was done, and then he came back.
10:06Right.
10:06Didn't he?
10:07He's not playing.
10:09I don't know.
10:10It was.
