01:00I mean, my teenage years would have been wandering up and down the Oak Mall in Greenock
01:04and hers was wandering up and down the strip of Las Vegas
01:08So it's mad how you end up meeting
01:11But even though my wife Tiana and son are here, it's never really felt like home
01:16I'm starting to take them round to the fact that Vegas is going to be part of life
01:20So I'm going to need to explore it a bit more and get to the heart of it a bit
01:24more
01:25And guiding me will be a fantastic cast of locals
01:30And not-so-locals
01:36I'll discover the iconic
01:38How do you become Mr Las Vegas
01:41And the unexpected of my adopted home city
01:44Go from front of house
01:46To behind the scenes of what will be an incredible show
01:51Helping me discover what life's like
01:54Living Las Vegas
01:55Vegas, baby
02:05This time, I'll be discovering how entertainment in Vegas comes in many forms
02:10And to illustrate, I need to jump a lift
02:21Vegas from the air, man
02:23I'm excited
02:24I'm biased, this is the best way to see Las Vegas
02:29Captain Buck
02:30It's a good pilot name, that
02:32I appreciate it
02:33You still get excited about this, Buck?
02:36Oh, I love flying
02:37If it's a take-off and landing, it never gets old
02:40Tickets up, Buck
02:51Look at that, man
02:54Can't get tired of that
02:55Wow
02:57That little bit of speed there was immense
03:00Look at that
03:01Look at the mountains
03:02Look at the show from up here
03:04You get it sometimes when you're flying into land
03:07But not like this
03:08Not this close
03:16I thought about doing a flip, but no
03:20Looking down, you realise how this city's whole being is devoted to delivering enjoyment
03:27You've got concerts, you've got gambling, you've got shows, you've got boxing, you've got the Super Bowl, you've got Grand
03:33Prix, you've got everything
03:34And you're literally in the middle of nowhere
03:39And that's another thing
03:40There used to be a rule
03:41There was no professional sports team allowed in Vegas because the gambling was, but that's changed
03:46And now we've got the hockey team with the Knights
03:48We've got a basketball and a baseball team on the way
03:53But to truly draw a crowd in the US, you need a football team
03:57So Vegas went out and got an absolute legend of one
04:01The Raiders
04:03We've got the Raiders here for football
04:05In this stadium, the Allegiant is space age
04:08It's amazing
04:10Built in 2020, it's nickname is the Death Star
04:14I wonder why
04:16You'll see right through this door on the Allegiant Stadium there
04:19So that'll slide open and you'll see right down on the field all the players
04:22Wow
04:23Amazing
04:25That's where the Super Bowl was last year
04:27I'd love to get in there
04:30And as if by magic
04:31Or by getting in touch and asking
04:33Guess where we're going to next
04:36Chewie, punch it
04:44I'm getting a sneak peek
04:46Thanks to General Manager
04:47Andy Gorchoff
04:51What do you think?
04:52Now this is a stadium
04:56Wow
04:57I didn't realise it was this big
05:01Oh, this is pretty cool
05:04This would be awesome
05:05Yeah
05:07I don't know that I'd be able to stand here when the stadium is full
05:10It'd be a little bit different
05:11It'd be powerful though
05:12Yeah, yeah
05:12I think I'd want a chair right there
05:14This is where I'd want to be
05:17It's always great for me to see somebody look at it for the first time
05:20Because it helps remind me how cool it is
05:24It is just spectacular
05:25It really is
05:26The building itself
05:29Feels like
05:29It'd be worth the visit
05:31Before whatever you're going to watch here
05:34Vegas just knows how to do entertainment
05:40But like I said
05:42The Raiders weren't always in Vegas
05:44Before moving here in 2020
05:46They'd originally been the Oakland Raiders
05:48And for a time
05:49The Los Angeles Raiders
05:53This is something that's a bit foreign to somebody from the UK
05:56The idea of a football team packing up and moving city
05:59Seems like madness
06:01But the Raiders are one of the iconic franchises, right?
06:04100%
06:05They're an original 1960 franchise
06:07And what's amazing to me on game days
06:10The fans come from every single state in the United States
06:15They have got one of the most loyal fan bases of any NFL team in the country
06:20And it's impressive
06:21Yeah, as a sports fan, you always love an away day
06:24You'll have a trip going away somewhere for a couple of days
06:26Yes
06:27There's nowhere better for an away day than Vegas
06:30But is it sport or is it entertainment?
06:33It's brought thousands of people to the city, you know, since the Raiders moved here in 2020
06:38Now it's one of the sports capitals of the world
06:41Yeah, yeah
06:42Go to any casino on the strip
06:43And the amount of fans in jerseys of the visiting team
06:48Everywhere
06:48Yeah, yeah
06:49Everywhere
06:51As the saying goes
06:53When in Rome
06:54It's time to boot a ball
06:56Ha ha
06:58Look at this
06:59Now it feels big
07:02Now it feels big
07:03Man, Friday night lights
07:06Just imagine it full
07:08I always had this thing
07:10You walk into a place and you think
07:11Either go, I'm going to perform
07:12Or you get nervous
07:13This place makes me a bit nervous
07:15Ha ha ha
07:16You know, I felt pretty confident about kicking a field
07:18Going, well, I'll be no bothered
07:19Now I'm like, oh no
07:21Well, the experience of standing alone
07:23On the 50-yard line of an NFL field
07:25When the stadium's empty
07:27Is something, again, not a lot of people get to do
07:30Let me try one
07:31Wait, so where's the run?
07:33Is that it?
07:34Uh, not exactly
07:38Oh, he's got in the distance
07:40He almost broke a liquor bottle in the bar there
07:43Oh shit, is it an eight now?
07:46Ah!
07:47That would not have gotten a good response from the fans
07:54Right down the middle
08:02Nice job
08:03Genuine
08:03Thank you, man
08:04I'm impressed
08:05Let me see that, man
08:18Entertainment is an intrinsic part of Las Vegas
08:20And a new addition to the roster
08:23Is the Celebrity Chef restaurant
08:26And one chef from back home in Scotland
08:28Is pretty hot on the strip
08:30Thanks to a certain TV show
08:35Martin, finally
08:36You're entering Hell's Kitchen
08:38Welcome to one of the most amazing restaurants in Vegas
08:41Now, the only time you're in there
08:43Is, of course, the time I'm not there
08:44But you're in safe hands
08:45Bobby's got you
08:46But listen
08:47Big man
08:48Do not ruin my restaurant
08:49Have an enjoyable night
08:51Can't wait to see you soon
08:52Take care
08:53Cheeky, get
09:02Bobby
09:03Hello
09:03Hi, dude
09:04Very nice meeting you
09:05Lovely to meet you
09:06Thanks for having me in
09:07So I hear the big man's going to have you put me through my pasties a wee bit
09:10Let's get ready
09:10Let's go
09:13Here we go
09:15See that it all happens
09:17Yes
09:17This is where all the magic happens
09:18I mean
09:18It's called Hell's Kitchen
09:20It's quite an intimidating name, isn't it?
09:23Because of the success of the show
09:25You must get people going like
09:27This is the spot they want to be at
09:28Oh, every day
09:29So pretty much
09:3080% of our reservations
09:32Are all fans
09:33Right
09:33They waited six months
09:34If not a year
09:35To get a reservation here
09:36So, like
09:37Every guest that comes in
09:38Is a Gordon fan
09:40Yeah
09:40So, I mean
09:41That's a lot of pressure on you guys
09:42Because you need to make it live up to their expectations
09:44Oh, yeah
09:44Yeah
09:44Yeah
09:45And everybody always asks
09:46You know
09:46Where's Gordon at?
09:47I say
09:47Oh, he sits in the back doing paperwork
09:50Keeping up appearances
09:51Yes
09:53It's roasted
09:53I guess now you can start filling the heat
09:55I mean, you can feel that
09:55I mean, that is Hell's Kitchen right there
09:58Full disclosure
09:59I mean, I can't cook
10:00I mean, I never cracked my first egg
10:02Till I was in my thirties
10:03But
10:04I mean, being a dad in that now
10:05It is something you should be getting into, right?
10:09It can be stressful
10:10Especially in the heat of the moment
10:11It's all about timing
10:15For entrees
10:15Bobby's serving up
10:17A lobster risotto
10:20So, what's this?
10:21This is the risotto
10:22I mean, I probably should have known that, right?
10:25How many people do you have under you working?
10:28For cooks, we have 65 cooks
10:30Wow
10:31It's a big team
10:31And what's your style like?
10:33Are you coming in effing and blinding?
10:35Full Scotsman?
10:36No, no, no, no, no
10:37No, no, no
10:38What did you pick up from Gordon working with him?
10:41This is very just genuine with the staff, right?
10:43Yeah
10:43The idea is to invest into your cooks
10:45Right
10:45As long as you invest in your cooks
10:46They're going to get everything back
10:49As you slow this down for me
10:51How quick would you usually do this?
10:53A little faster than this
10:54Right
10:54So about three scoops right there
10:55Then we kind of make a little bed
10:58From here, you're going to garnish it
10:59Right
11:00Something can taste good
11:01But it's the presentation as well, right?
11:03Oh, it's all about the presentation
11:04The next step will be your chives
11:06Next up will be your crispy onions
11:08Again, it's a little wipe
11:10Just in case we miss anything
11:11Yeah
11:14You've not actually done it
11:15You've done all the work
11:16But I'll take the credit for it
11:17Look at that
11:17It's into detail
11:19Yeah
11:19We're going to slice the lobster tail
11:21Ah, there we go
11:22Just kind of go at an angle
11:24There we go
11:26There it is
11:27Service
11:28Is that what you say?
11:29Service
11:30All right
11:31Can I try one?
11:33Yes
11:33I think I remember it
11:35So it was three scoops
11:38Ah
11:40That's in the detail
11:41I'll clean that in a sec
11:42Parmesan
11:44Chives
11:44Onions
11:46Lobster
11:47No, it's all coming apart
11:49No, no, no, no
11:50Don't do it
11:51Don't do it
11:52No
11:53I think I've got it
11:54Got it back
11:55Got it back
11:56And it's directly in the middle
11:58Slide it off
11:58Yes, sir
12:02What do you think?
12:03It just doesn't look as good
12:04It's a little
12:05It's a little
12:05It's a tad bit smaller
12:06But it almost looks as great
12:08Gordon
12:09What are we thinking?
12:11It's going to absolutely rinse me
12:12You did a great job
12:14For your first try
12:14All right
12:15Yeah, I wouldn't mind tasting it
12:17Get all the layers, don't you?
12:19Crispy on it
12:20It kind of gives a little bit of texture
12:23Great
12:23Yeah, it's really good
12:24Yeah
12:25It's got my heart to food
12:26Got it filling?
12:27Yep
12:27Very filling
12:33And if food is entertainment
12:35Then it's showtime at Hell's Kitchen
12:37You see that you're open now
12:42Everybody was really smiley to me
12:43Ten minutes ago
12:44Now I feel like I'm in the way
12:46Like the intensity
12:47The tense is here
12:48Yeah
12:48Service has started
12:49Do you still get the same buzz?
12:52It's odd as it says
12:53I still get the same buzz every day
12:54Yeah
12:56Time for me
12:57To lend a hand
12:58Just down the middle
12:59Correct
13:00I don't know
13:01Like I kind of crushed it a wee bit
13:03Look how tender that is in the middle
13:05This is our red wine demi
13:07Onions, carrots, celery
13:08Is that a fancy word for gravy?
13:10That is a very fancy word for gravy
13:11Right
13:12It's a high-end gravy I would say
13:13Right, there you go
13:13So we've got the fancy gravy on it
13:19It's a diet for us
13:20Well done
13:22Thank you, good work
13:23It's the nicest breakfast I've ever had
13:26Red wine juice you
13:28One last bite
13:35I'm going back in
13:36Lord Bobby comes back
13:37It's a good start for the morning
13:39I'm sorry Bobby
13:40Right, let's go
13:50I'm exploring entertainment in my adopted hometown of Las Vegas
13:55Where they've embraced sport as a means to bring in the tourists
13:58And a biggie has been motorsport
14:01Hosting F1 on the strip since 2023
14:05So right now, I feel the need
14:07The need for speed
14:09With my pal, Nawid
14:12Ah, there he is
14:15Good to see you
14:16How are you?
14:17You good?
14:18Good
14:19Nawid's an incomer to Vegas like me
14:22Originally from Afghanistan
14:23We met a couple of years ago and became good pals
14:27We've come to dream racing at the Vegas Speedway
14:29To put the pedal to the metal
14:31Ready to race some cars?
14:33Yeah, let's go
14:34Your satisfaction is our priority
14:37First things first
14:38Health and safety
14:39The best performance from the cars
14:41Can only be accomplished by driving well
14:44I didn't take much for the instruction video there
14:47It says put the seatbelt on and then it kind of lost me
14:51There's a lot of technicalities
14:53But what really freaked me out is
14:55I've never done a paddle shift
14:57You done a paddle shift?
14:59Yeah
14:59Where did you do that?
15:00Back in Afghanistan and here too
15:32You did it here as well?
15:33There's actually one button just for your drink tube
15:36Right, so I press that and I can get a drink
15:38You'll have a reservoir that you fill before your race
15:41And you'll have a tube that's in your helmet
15:42Is that what real drivers have?
15:44They've got that?
15:44Yes, that's why you always see that hose in the front
15:46Is there one for food or is there only drink?
15:50They have a bed
15:51Oh, you've got a bed in the back as well
15:52I think it looks...
15:56Uh-oh
15:56Left foot first
15:57Pull your left foot
15:58Jesus
16:01Before the race, time for some mind games
16:04Do you think anybody's crashed here?
16:06In those?
16:07There's no reason to crash, you know
16:09You seem pretty confident, my man, I've got to say
16:11You seem very confident
16:14Everything's easy
16:16Everything's easy
16:16No, it's fine
16:17Because I love it
16:18I love driving this car
16:19Yeah
16:19Yeah
16:21Now Wade, show us how it's done, pal
16:23It's racing, let's go race
16:25Three laps each
16:27Fastest lap wins
16:29All right
16:29Good?
16:30Yep
16:30Have fun
16:31Thank you
16:34How you feeling, bud?
16:35You all right?
16:36Feeling good, you all right?
16:37Great
16:38Exciting to drive it
16:40It's fine
16:41Jeez, it's so much fun
16:42Go ahead, push that start
16:47All right, pull out a brake
16:48And you can drive for it
16:55Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
16:57Whoo, hoo, hoo
17:01Ha, ha, ha
17:02That was nearly a million dollar fender bender
17:06No gas, no brakes
17:07Are you ready?
17:08Gas, no
17:11They come over to my house for the 4th of July
17:13And absolutely smashed me on my own pool table
17:15In front of a big crowd of people
17:16So, I do own one
17:20Yeah, he's looking good
17:27So, Reggie, you've got NASCAR
17:29And now we've got Formula One
17:30What is it with Vegas and motor racing?
17:32I think it's just that when people come to Vegas
17:34They want entertainment
17:36Yeah
17:37You know, so that's something that Vegas does attract
17:39It does make available
17:41Back on the ass
17:43That's good, that's good
17:43That is something you associate with America
17:45It's big, loud, noise, engines
17:48Steak in your face
17:50Release the brake, release, release, release
17:54We get a lot of people asking me
17:55Is there a speed limit?
17:56No, there's no speed limit
17:58Slow it down, slow it down
17:59Left side of the road
18:01Left side of the road
18:03What did you think?
18:04That's good
18:05Great
18:07I can be a competitive wee arsehole
18:10And actually it's just a proper privilege
18:11Enjoy it
18:13So I can hike about trying to get the quicker time
18:15And yeah
18:16Enjoy the experience
18:17But when
18:18Tips
18:19Give me some tips
18:20Just when you're arriving to the turns
18:22Uh-huh
18:23You don't have to go fast, you know
18:25Don't rush the turns?
18:26Yeah
18:27That's not a good place
18:28It's a wee bad game
18:28Yeah
18:30Alright baby, let's rock
18:31Alright, grab the wheel
18:32Pull yourself back
18:33All the way
18:34All the way
18:35That's better
18:36Yeah, I have the seat all the way forward
18:37Yeah, I like it forward, yeah
18:39Oh, it's tight on the old
18:41Crown Jewels
18:42You can feel that
18:44Alright, you're good to go
18:46Alright, Martin, feeling good?
18:48I think so
18:48Yeah
18:50And then with your foot on a brake
18:51Fire it up, just push down
19:10People who will come here
19:12They're looking for some entertainment
19:13Something fun
19:13Yeah
19:14They really don't have a desire
19:15To become a race car driver
19:16But they want to drive a cool car
19:17We're just driving great, look
19:19Thank you, thank you
19:20Thank you, thank you
19:21Thank you, thank you
19:21Yeah, that's good
19:24Ooh
19:24Great, great, great, great
19:26Great, great
19:27Ooh, side
19:28Well, up there
19:29It's a little bit too tight
19:30A little bit too tight
19:31You're all right
19:31You know
19:34Ooh
19:36Ooh
19:36Good girl
19:38Ooh
19:39Ooh
19:40Here we go
19:40Ooh
19:41Ooh
19:44Ooh
19:44Ooh
19:44Ooh
19:46Yeah, break, break our time
19:47Full break, full break
19:48Good
19:50You're going somewhere else
19:51Turn to the left?
19:53Oh, fine
19:54But you kept it running
19:56You guys over here
19:56Left ship
19:57Here
19:58Here
20:00Last lap
20:01Put the foot down, Martin
20:02Yeah
20:11When you think about Vegas
20:12Everybody thinks about casinos
20:14But now you've got the Knights
20:15You've got the hockey team
20:16You've got the Raiders
20:17You've got Formula One
20:18It's now, for America, becoming synonymous with sports
20:21Absolutely, very true
20:23I think one of the largest things that's helped our sport is just the popularity of the Formula One
20:28Yeah
20:28I think because of that it's helped the whole motorsports in Las Vegas
20:43It's going fast here, but those ones slow
20:48Left side of the road
20:50C'est parti!
20:51Ah!
20:52C'est juste un peu pour ça!
20:54Ah!
20:56Ah!
20:58C'est parti!
21:00Ha, ha, ha, ha!
21:02Ah!
21:03Je me suis juste en train de faire ça,
21:05plutôt que je me suis en train de faire ça.
21:08Oh, oui!
21:11C'est parti!
21:13Ah!
21:13C'est parti!
21:14C'est parti!
21:15C'est parti!
21:17C'est parti!
21:18C'est parti à l'aise!
21:19Let me take a look at the time.
21:20That straight is the fun bit, alright?
21:24I kind of lost the head after the second turn.
21:26I was like, oh, no.
21:29That one over there was a bit dicey by the way.
21:32When you hear his voice go up a bit,
21:35that's when he starts going, uh oh!
21:39Paracin, Paracin.
21:41Here we go.
21:42So you wanna know what we wanna do the fastest time?
21:44Yeah.
21:44It was close, it was like five tenths of a second.
22:47There's a pyramid right in the middle of the strip. It's insane.
22:50You've got the pyramids, you've got New York, Camelot, and then you've got the Eiffel Tower behind it.
22:54It's bizarre. It's unbelievable.
22:57This is the main drag.
22:58Phil's not interested in poker or the like, so I'm taking him to Cirque du Soleil.
23:05The Cirque shows are phenomenal.
23:07See, Cirque was one of the first to start something here that wasn't just about gambling.
23:13You know, it was a sort of centerpiece of a casino and go like, don't just come here for the
23:18gambling, come here to see this show.
23:19Wow.
23:20But the steer was the original, and that's the one I've not seen yet.
23:24So I think we might go check that out.
23:26Brilliant!
23:27That would be amazing.
23:28That would be epic.
23:29Maybe we might get to go see it, and maybe just a little bit more.
23:33So I don't want to give too much away, but I think we're going to have fun.
23:37How exciting. I love it.
23:39You think of this guy.
23:41He's beautiful. Who's that?
23:43Is that he?
23:44Look at the dungarees.
23:46They're belters.
23:47They are brilliant.
23:48What's happening, Paul?
23:49What's his name?
23:50Lloyd.
23:51Lloyd.
23:52Lloyd.
23:52See you there, Lloyd.
23:56See these wee dungarees.
23:58Oh, it's brilliant.
24:03Mester can be found in the Treasure Island Casino naturally.
24:08All right, my boy.
24:11Let's see a bit of Cirque.
24:13Boom.
24:22The drum entrance.
24:24Wow.
24:25Wow.
24:28There's some space, isn't it?
24:30It's incredible.
24:32It's massive.
24:34It's magic, but isn't it?
24:36Magic.
24:37This was the first custom-built Cirque, like, theatre.
24:41This is a privilege.
24:43It's a good name for a show, isn't it?
24:46Mystere.
24:46Mystere.
24:47I'm excited just to see a bit of it.
24:49I think generally just to see the show.
24:51Do you think they'll actually let us do stuff?
24:52I've got a feeling it might just be, like, stand back and look how good we are at doing all
24:56this amazing stuff.
25:06I mean, the more you do it, the easier it is.
25:10This is Evgeny, and unluckily for him, he's tasked with teaching us some basics of the pole.
25:17That is a cod piece and a half.
25:21Either you're very talented, or should I be worried about what we're training for?
25:25What is that protecting you from?
25:26The costumes are custom, so...
25:28Yeah.
25:28All right.
25:30Being modest.
25:31Show us what we're going to try.
25:33So, the sequence for you guys is into this position.
25:37Oh, wow.
25:38You can hit a little pose.
25:39If you feel good, you can slide.
25:43I know I get the cod piece.
25:45Yeah, exactly.
25:46Do you guys want to try?
25:47You got it.
25:50Yes.
25:51Straighten that knee.
25:53Straighten that leg fully.
25:54Yeah, you got it.
25:55Boom.
25:58Did you let go with that?
25:59Yep.
26:00You got it.
26:00Nice.
26:02Oh, you can feel that on the calf.
26:05The calves, are they from all over?
26:07Yes.
26:07Well, you can see all our flags.
26:10Oh, so they represent a Scotland one.
26:12What do I do?
26:13You can put this one here.
26:14I'm confused.
26:15That way?
26:15That way?
26:16No, that way.
26:16I can show you one more time.
26:17Oh, there, yeah, you got it.
26:19Stack that right hand out.
26:20You're good?
26:21Yay!
26:22You were born for it, pal.
26:25Okay, so the next one would be, we're going to step once and reach high.
26:28Then you're going to just hug the pole with your legs and bring that top arm around.
26:35How long during a show do you have to hold that position?
26:37Not very long because it's pretty boring.
26:41Like that theater is spectacular as well, but the audience are close.
26:45They're not like miles away from you.
26:47Like they're right there.
26:48Like do you like clock eyes with people?
26:50The energy you can get from the audience because you see their face is just amazed and that
26:54gives you motivation to continue.
26:58We're up and hug it with your legs.
27:01Okay.
27:02Nice.
27:02And then this hand goes around the pole.
27:06There you go.
27:06Hey.
27:07Okay, then do it.
27:08Easy.
27:09Blah, blah, blah.
27:12We don't quite have the flair that you guys have, but we do it.
27:16Oh, the groin, the groin is gone.
27:18Oh, the groin.
27:20Oh, yeah.
27:21You got it.
27:21This one's actually the easiest part of the act.
27:23Right.
27:24Oh, thank you.
27:26See, when you're doing that stuff, how high are you usually when you're doing it?
27:29Pretty much we're like here.
27:34It's like spider.
27:37That is amazing.
27:39That is so good.
27:40You can do it from different positions too.
27:45Having, um, mastered cert gymnastics, Evgeny wants us to meet the rest of the team, and
27:52Mystere's artistic director, Petro.
27:54I feel an audition coming on.
27:56Oh, wow.
27:57Wow.
28:00It's happening.
28:02All right, Oli, just be careful because it's just a different pole.
28:07I'm ready, I'm ready.
28:09Hello, audience.
28:10Whoa.
28:13Nice, guys.
28:14Whoa.
28:14Well done.
28:15That is superb.
28:17These are our firebirds, our main Chinese pole specialists in the show.
28:21These guys, those are the specialists with the big skills, with the main focus on.
28:27How old were you when you started?
28:29Nine years old.
28:30Nine?
28:30Yeah.
28:31When I was young, I just loved to do, climb anywhere, jump from heights.
28:36I'm from Montreal, where the company is from as well.
28:38Circus is big.
28:39Yeah.
28:39So there's a circus school, and they put me in there so I could be the monkey I am today.
28:44Why is circus so big in Montreal?
28:46I had no idea.
28:47There was a circus school even before Cirque du Soleil happened.
28:50They have a lot of roots from Europe.
28:52Uh-huh.
28:52And in France, performing circus art was in the street.
28:57So we took that as well in Montreal and Quebec City.
28:59Yeah.
29:00And we developed a school, and then from the school, become a company.
29:04And the company is what it is today.
29:07Yeah.
29:07Where are you guys all from?
29:08I'm from the UK.
29:09Are you from the UK?
29:10Oh, really?
29:11West Sussex.
29:12Oh, how did you end up here?
29:14I did gymnastics.
29:15Yeah.
29:15I saw a circus show when I was like 11, and something in my brain went, that's what I want
29:19to do.
29:19Wow.
29:19And so the rest of my life was just training and figuring out how to do that.
29:24Yeah, that trick is a pole transfer.
29:26So he'll jump from one to another one.
29:30Upside down.
29:38Another one is a very physical one.
29:40He calls hands hand up.
29:42So he's going to jump on his hands upside down, all the way up.
29:46That's going to be a lot.
29:48Obviously, you guys are super fit and unbelievable athletes, but the beauty of Cirque is the storytelling
29:54side of it.
29:55You know, the performance, like, do you have to kind of teach people that?
29:58This is my job directly as an artistic advisor for the show is to make sure besides the acrobatics
30:04that they already have, they will become the artists on that stage.
30:09Hey.
30:11It's just amazing.
30:12It's so cool.
30:13It's brilliant.
30:18Big trick.
30:21Space.
30:22Whoa!
30:22Yeah.
30:25Wow.
30:26There it is.
30:27Whoa.
30:28That was amazing.
30:34The timing on that, that defies gravity.
30:37The trust you've got to have in each other.
30:40Is that just developed over time?
30:41This is what Cirque du Soleil is about.
30:44It's about trust.
30:45It's about timing.
30:46It's about precision.
30:47So when you're working in a team, it's essential.
30:51You cannot survive if you don't have that trust there.
30:54Trust, timing and precision are our middle names.
30:58We've got this, Phil, my boy.
31:00So, you ready?
31:01Yeah.
31:04Yeah.
31:17Yeah.
31:20Yeah.
31:45Good job.
31:47Look at you.
31:48That was amazing.
31:52As if performing alongside the Firebirds of Mystere wasn't enough, we are now with General
31:58Stage Manager, Julie.
31:59It's quiet.
32:02For a proper Access All Areas experience during an actual performance.
32:09So, anything that moves in the theatre that's not moved by a person is moved by an automated
32:14system that's controlled unless it goes around.
32:16So, part of stage management is calling every cue for something that moves.
32:21Wow.
32:21That's up here.
32:32So, here you can see anytime something lights up in blue, that's what's moving.
32:37So, this right here that's moving is that drum.
32:52What was the first time you saw the show?
32:54The first time I saw Mystere, I was 16.
32:56Yeah?
32:57Yeah.
32:57What was that like?
32:58It was incredible.
32:59Yeah.
33:00Um, I was here on a school field trip and we actually got, we're lucky enough to see
33:03all the Cirque du Soleil shows.
33:05Uh, and when I saw Mystere, I just totally fell in love.
33:08Really?
33:09Yeah.
33:09That what made you go into it?
33:10Yeah.
33:11Was it?
33:11Yeah.
33:11Leaving the theatre, right?
33:12I called my parents and I told them, I want to be the general stage manager of Mystere.
33:16Oh my god.
33:17Wow.
33:18And they were like, great, what do we have to do?
33:19So then, like, all my schooling was geared towards getting to come here and do this.
33:24Yeah.
33:24That was exactly what I feel like.
33:25It's pretty incredible.
33:27Yeah.
33:27Big dream come true for sure.
33:38Julie's now taking us out onto the lighting catwalk above the stage.
34:04The other scale, it's time to aim, it's amazing.
34:18There's our boys.
34:22I genuinely found that quite inspiring.
34:25Just seeing performers commit like that, every bit of passion they've got.
34:29It was lovely.
34:30The whole show's alive.
34:32Yeah.
34:32Because every single performer in there is committed.
34:34Yeah.
34:34They came in the pool, at the top of the arena.
34:37I was like, wow.
34:39It was amazing.
34:41It's amazing.
34:42I'm so happy.
34:43Oh, this is it.
34:44This is it.
34:45This is it.
34:48Woo!
34:52Epic.
34:53Very good.
34:54Very good.
34:59Thank you.
35:00Thank you.
35:01Thank you.
35:01Thank you.
35:02Thank you.
35:02Thank you.
35:03Thank you.
35:04Thank you.
35:13While Vegas' entertainment offerings have evolved and adapted,
35:17its iconic past still continues to hold a powerful draw for many visitors.
35:22I'm heading to the Burbs to meet a singing legend
35:24who rocked up here in the late 50s,
35:27the mighty Wayne Newton.
35:30Genuinely excited about this one.
35:31I mean, this is Vegas royalty.
35:35There's a lot of legends being through this town,
35:37but this man's been here for decade after decade.
35:40And he's still here, still doing shows, so...
35:43He's a decent gaff as well, let's be honest.
35:51For the man, Newton.
35:53There he is.
35:54Well, look in there.
35:57Hey, Martin.
35:58How are you?
35:58Mr. Newton.
35:59Welcome, welcome, welcome.
36:00Absolutely fun.
36:01Thank you so much for inviting me to your home.
36:04Oh, we are thrilled to have you.
36:05Come on in, please.
36:05Thank you so much.
36:07What a place.
36:08Wow.
36:09What you hear whistling is a bird.
36:11Oh, was that the bird?
36:12I thought somebody was saying, how are you?
36:14What kind of bird is it?
36:15Hello, pal.
36:16You coming up?
36:17How are you?
36:18Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
36:22So how long have you been sort of permanent in Vegas?
36:25I came here at the age of...
36:27Sit down.
36:27Sorry, yeah, thanks, man.
36:28I came here at the age of 15.
36:30Wow.
36:31You come out here at 15.
36:33It was wonderful in some ways and scary in others.
36:37Yeah.
36:43There's the greats of entertainment, right?
36:45I mean, Elvis, Sinatra.
36:48That was the royalty.
36:49What was that era like?
36:50It was phenomenal.
36:53The people who were the stars of those years,
36:58Elvis, Bobby Darin, Frankie Valli, all of them, right?
37:03Yeah.
37:03Looked out for those of us that were coming up.
37:07Right.
37:08Frank Sinatra became a friend to me.
37:11Anytime he was in town, he would always make sure that there was time and room on that show for
37:18me to perform.
37:18What did that feel like?
37:20It was strange.
37:21Elvis, for example, and you'll love this.
37:23I was doing Bonanza, the television show.
37:27So I'm sitting there studying my script because it was my first time acting and I didn't want to screw
37:32it up.
37:33And I turned around and I'm about painted, you know, Elvis.
37:40And I started mumbling what a big fan I was.
37:43And I said, thank you very much, thank you.
37:45And he said, do you know a girl by the name of Sandy Farah?
37:49And I said, well, yes.
37:52In fact, we're dating.
37:54And he said, so are we.
38:01So that's how Elvis and I met the first time and became instantaneous friends for the rest of his life.
38:09Oh, it seems like a bygone era.
38:11Yeah, you know, it's a shame that it's a bygone era.
38:14Yeah, this was a town built on the biggest names in show business.
38:18So how do you become Mr. Las Vegas?
38:21I think it's just the fact that I wouldn't leave.
38:26I came here at 15 and stayed because I was welcomed home.
38:31Do you still get the same kick out of it?
38:33Do you still enjoy it as much?
38:35Absolutely.
38:35I tell you that my work is the reason I wake up every day.
38:42There's nothing that can happen that I haven't seen.
38:45Right.
38:45Okay.
38:46From maybe ladies revealing themselves at the bar to a person passing away in my show.
38:55Wow.
38:56The paramedics came in to remove him from the booth.
38:59And his daughter stood up and said, he's waited his whole life to see this show and he's going to
39:06see it.
39:07What?
39:08And she left him there the whole show.
39:16I can't say that I killed him, but, you know.
39:22Guys, so what are you, I mean, how do you, yeah, that is so tragic and beautiful and hilarious.
39:30I mean, it seems like that story just encapsulates Vegas.
39:34Well, Mr. Newton, all I can say is Dankershin.
39:40Is this your pool?
39:42Yes.
39:43Yeah, I thought I was quite fancy with a pool out my back here, but it's not quite that.
39:47I'm genuinely so chuffed to bits for that.
39:51It is peaceful and it's wonderful.
39:54Them names, man, he's like, and then Elvis says, and then Frank says, but the way he's doing it, you
39:59know, he's not bragging about it.
40:00That was just his reality.
40:02And quite inspiring, you know, I think that's why he is who he is, because he doesn't take anything for
40:08granted.
40:08You can see he's still working and he still loves what he does.
40:14I mean, just what an honour to spend a bit of time with Mr. Las Vegas, and he has more
40:20than earned that title.
40:28Many things make Las Vegas what it is, but for me, there's one thing that definitely lures in the punters.
40:35It's neon lights.
40:41This is the neon boneyard.
40:44It celebrates the artistry and history of the signs that have lit Vegas for decades.
40:52I feel like a wee bit like you're in a zombie movie.
40:54End of days kind of thing.
40:57The Las Vegas graveyard.
41:00In a nice way, you know, this is where you see all these names of the golden nugget.
41:06Jerry's nugget.
41:08I don't know what happened to Jerry.
41:12It's lovely that somebody's took the time to collect them and preserve them, but it's like these were meant to
41:17be lit up.
41:20These were meant to be bright and welcoming.
41:23These were the things that attract you.
41:24You go, no, that looks cool.
41:26The old Wayne Newtons saw a few of these off.
41:29He's outlived them all.
41:31The great Wayne.
41:34The amount of people that have stood under them and gazed upon them as they come in.
41:39Sinatra would have looked at that at one point.
41:41The Rat Pack going on a night out would have walked under that.
41:45And that's pretty spectacular.
41:48It's a shame that they're not there anymore, but it would have been great to see them in their heyday.
41:53I really would have liked that.
42:00This is how they were meant to be seen.
42:11Stardust was a classic.
42:14It literally was sort of built, inspired by, like, the space age.
42:19You've got Neil Armstrong, GFK, all that sort of period.
42:24It's talking proper sort of moments in time.
42:26In the Riviera, the Riv, Dean Martin used to own a piece of.
42:33So you're talking Vegas royalty.
42:37I feel like I'm at the fair.
42:39It's got that kind of little feeling of tingle of excitement about it.
42:43I love it.
42:44They're such an ingrained part of Vegas life.
42:47Laundry mat.
42:48Pool hall.
42:49The bigger, brighter, the better.
42:55These two being together is quite fitting.
42:57Because when you look at that sign in the 40s, it's a beautiful sign, but probably with the imagery, maybe
43:04a wee bit dated.
43:05But the Palms now is owned by a Native American tribe.
43:09So, them two put together is actually a sort of lovely conjoining of history.
43:22The beacon of Vegas drawing you in, they're sort of like living pieces of art, you know?
43:29There's something really, really romantic about them and sort of at the very heart of what it is to be
43:37Vegas.
43:38This is it.
43:41And do you hear that sound?
43:43And there's something quite fitting about that buzz as well.
43:47It's like a mosquito trap drawing us all in.
43:51And then ping, ping, ping, ping, ping.
43:54It's magic.
44:21At this point in these type of travel shows, I should be saying my stay in Vegas has come to
44:26an end and it's time for me to go home.
44:29However, yeah, it's been wild.
44:31I've always had a bit of a hard time calling Vegas home because, I mean, nobody lives in Vegas, right?
44:38Look, it's Las Vegas.
44:39It's not a home, it's a tourist attraction.
44:42And this journey's sort of changed my whole perspective on what this place is.
44:49Because I've got to be honest as well, I always had this idea.
44:51I live in my own little world up there in our house, you know?
44:54I've got my family unit and I'm a bit of a hermit up there.
44:56And I thought down here, it's entertaining, it's big, it's brash, it's bright.
45:03But I thought it was a bit cold because I thought it was just a business.
45:06You know, people come here for a couple of days, they have fun and then they disappear.
45:10Nobody stays here.
45:11But you've got all these iconic names and it's been such a joy to see them.
45:18To stand in the Bellagio Mountains where I saw Oceans 11, that was my first image of Vegas.
45:24Finding an area that needed a bit of love and now making it the coolest part of the city.
45:28I had no idea about the Ars District and already it's my favourite park.
45:31Bringing jobs to the place, bringing vibrancy, bringing love.
45:36Sladger.
45:37Sandy Ranch, somewhere I never even knew existed.
45:40Yee-haw!
45:41Where you can go and be a proper cowboy for a day.
45:44This is paradise right here.
45:46To go to Grand Candy and all those things.
45:48This is history, this is tradition.
45:50We're the first Americans.
45:52Yeah.
45:57But it's more than all those big, beautiful lights.
46:01And it's my wife.
46:02That's what originally brought me here.
46:05It's my son.
46:07Scotland's always going to be home.
46:10Greenock's always going to be home.
46:12But Las Vegas is also my home.
46:18Hey darling, you dance!
46:20I'm not dancing, I'm not dancing, I'm not dancing.
