00:04Welcome to MojoPlays and today we're looking back at some of the most elusive playable
00:08characters and alternate forms of the SNES era. Whether it was a hidden code, an obscure requirement,
00:14or a brutally difficult challenge, these are 10 of the hardest characters to get in SNES games.
00:19Let's go. Before we continue, we publish content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:25the bell to get notified of our latest videos. Stud Muffin NBA Jam Tournament Edition
00:36Most NBA Jam Tournament Edition secret players ask for some initials and a birthday. Stud Muffin
00:42decides that's far too sensible. On the SNES you first have to hold left L and R on the opening
00:47license screen with absolutely no message confirming you did anything correctly. Only after that invisible
00:52setup can you enter a strange hidden player input on the initial screen and make him appear.
00:57It's not difficult in the traditional sense. Nobody's asking you to win a tournament or hit 20
01:01straight dunks. The challenge is knowing this nonsense exists at all. Imagine being the kid
01:06who knew this in 1995. Legend. Ryo Sakazaki Fatal Fury Special.
01:20Imagine clearing an entire fighting game flawlessly, only for another bloke to walk in after the final
01:24boss and demand a match. That is Ryo Sakazaki in Fatal Fury Special. To face the Art of Fighting
01:31hero as the hidden opponent, you must beat every regular battle without dropping a single round.
01:36Not a match, a round. Come on man. The SNES port then adds another layer of silliness
01:41by hiding a controller code at the Takari logo that makes Ryo playable. So there are really two
01:47secrets here. Earning the crossover fight the painful way, or already knowing the magic input.
01:51I'm going to opt for the magic input.
02:01Broly Dragon Ball Z Super Buddha Ten 2
02:04I know I'm talking a lot about codes, but the famous Broly code is a little different
02:13because the game actually teaches you the code. Dragon Ball Z Super Buddha Den 2 hides pieces of
02:19that command behind successful story mode clears with Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks and Piccolo.
02:24Each character reveals part of the sequence, gradually turning four campaigns into a controller
02:29based treasure map. Put everything together, enter the finished code during the opening sequence and
02:33both Broly and Goku become available outside story mode. Of course most kids probably learned it from a
02:39magazine, or use the Dragon Balls to wish for the code.
02:47Shin Akuma Street Fighter Alpha 2
02:53For decades, the SNES version of Street Fighter Alpha 2 appeared to have one last secret nobody could crack.
03:00Playable Shin Akuma. First you must finish arcade mode, set a new high score and enter KAG as the initials.
03:06Back at the title screen, a second controller becomes part of the ritual. Hold the required
03:11buttons while entering versus mode, then select Akuma while holding start. Do everything properly,
03:15and the stronger Shin form appears. None of this demands tournament level reflexes,
03:20but discovering it naturally is pretty much impossible. When a cheat stays hidden for roughly
03:24a quarter of a decade, it becomes legend.
03:33Smoke Mortal Kombat 3
03:37Three screens, three different button combinations. No explanation. That is how Mortal Kombat 3 handles
03:44smoke on the SNES. During the copyright screen, hold left and A. When the Williams logo arrives,
03:50switch to right and B. Then, at the there is no knowledge, that is not power message, move over to
03:55X and Y.
03:56Get the sequence right and the Cyber Ninja finally becomes playable. It is wonderfully ridiculous,
04:01because nothing about normal gameplay would ever point you towards this solution. You either knew
04:06the ritual or Smoke stayed hidden forever. Secret characters in the 90s were basically urban legends
04:11hidden behind codes, so let's take a look at some that were just plain hard to find.
04:20Umaro Final Fantasy 6
04:26There is an enormous yeti living underneath Nash, and Final Fantasy 6 is completely comfortable with you
04:33never finding him. Umaro only becomes recruitable in the world of Ruin after returning to the frozen
04:39city and pushing through the northern cliffs into his cave. Naturally, introductions begin with a boss
04:43fight and you beat him, and the next important ingredient is Mog. Have the Moogle in your party
04:48and he can convince Umaro to join the team. The reward is one of the strangest playable characters in
04:53the game. A berserker you cannot directly command in battle. You go through all that effort to recruit
04:58someone who won't bloody listen.
05:07Colored Yoshi's Super Mario World
05:11Green Yoshi might be the mascot, but Super Mario World quietly hides much better versions behind its secret routes.
05:18Red, blue and yellow Yoshi's mostly appear around Star World, which already requires finding hidden exits and unlocking star roads
05:25to reach.
05:25Discover one as a baby, feed it enough enemies or a power-up, and it grows into an adult with
05:30its own
05:30permanent gimmick. Red turns every shell into fireballs, yellow creates damaging shock waves when landing,
05:35and blue can fly while carrying any Koopa shell. None of them are needed to finish the game, which makes
05:40them feel like bonus characters for players willing to explore. And explore, I shall.
05:47Raphael Romancing Saga
05:55Recruiting Raphael permanently is the sort of job that makes Romancing Saga terrifying without needing
06:00a single scary monster. His availability depends on a chain of events involving the Knights of Merseburg,
06:07Theodore and Constance, with earlier scenarios affecting where the later ones even become available.
06:12Help Theodore and Raphael early deal with Constance's kidnapping, then continue far enough for
06:16Theodore's later crisis to unfold. Only after progressing through that tangled storyline can
06:22Raphael become a permanent recruit. The problem is that romancing Saga does not hold your hand,
06:27and these events can be missed entirely, and mostly are missed entirely.
06:37Liquid Metal Slime Dragon Quest 5
06:44A 1 in 256 recruitment chance already sounds pretty miserable. Now attach it to an enemy famous for
06:51running away before you can even kill it. Welcome to hunting the Liquid Metal Slime Dragon Quest 5.
06:57Once monster recruitment is available and the hero meets the necessary level requirement,
07:01every eligible victory gives you that tiny first recruit chance. Statistically, you are only around
07:0750-50 after roughly 178 successful kills, while reaching about 95% chance takes around 766.
07:14I know I threw a lot of numbers at you then, so let me just say this, it's bloody hard.
07:18Plenty of slimes
07:19will simply flee and waste your time before the recruitment roll even happens. This is not gaming, this is torture.
07:31Xavir Fire Emblem Thracia 776
07:36Chapter 18 of Fire Emblem Thracia 776 offers you a choice. Finish them out normally,
07:42or completely ruin your evening trying to recruit Xavir. The trapped civilians must each reach and speak
07:48to their matching Leinster Armoured Knight, turning those enemies into allies one at a time. Unfortunately,
07:53the newly converted Knights can then attack soldiers you still need alive, while civilians can be
07:58captured and the whole arrangement can collapse through one bad movement. Only after every required
08:02conversation happens, can Leif safely talk Xavir into joining. Killing the Armoured Knights would make
08:08everything dramatically simpler, which is what makes this requirement so dastardly. I've been waiting for
08:13my chance to say dastardly in a Mojo video. Thank you.
