00:00Whenever the Niners play the Seahawks, we wait for this moment.
00:03We wait for this.
00:05This conversation.
00:07Do we?
00:07We do.
00:07I do.
00:08Right here on the River Islands guest line.
00:11Let's go.
00:12KJR.
00:12Softie Mauler.
00:14Yeah.
00:14Yeah.
00:15Yeah.
00:15Let's go, Softie.
00:16Yeah.
00:16Let's go.
00:17Let's do it.
00:18You guys ready?
00:18Hey, I just drove by a real nice RV park.
00:22Somebody called Jed to tell him we got him set up, man, up here.
00:26We got all kinds of different people, all kinds of options for him.
00:30Beautiful RV park.
00:32You get a discount on Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock because everybody's watching the game.
00:37I know he's not going to be worried about it because he's suspended.
00:40But, yeah, we got plenty of room and plenty of nice escorts for your boy Jed.
00:45Come up here and hang out with us, man.
00:47Okay.
00:48You must live in a really good neighborhood.
00:50You're driving home.
00:52I asked you off the air if I could make fun of him, and you said yes.
00:55So, shut up.
00:57I don't recall that, and I'm still mad about, like, who booked this guy on our show.
01:02Turns out it might have been me.
01:04And it's funny, Softie, because I was telling Mark, my partner, about when I met you,
01:08and it's actually when I met Mark, which was back in the Final Four about, I don't know,
01:13three lifetimes ago.
01:15Yeah.
01:15No, it's been a while, man.
01:17And, you know, it's really funny about this thing.
01:19I know we like to have a lot of fun.
01:20You know, I love you guys, obviously, but this is a freaking awesome rivalry.
01:25And I'm glad it's back, right?
01:26Because when Harbaugh and Carroll had this thing going, it was nasty.
01:32It was gnarly.
01:33And, man, Niner fans and Seahawks fans, I don't know how you guys feel,
01:36but I feel like Niner fans and Seahawks fans are the only fan bases in the division that give a
01:41damn.
01:42Ram fans don't care.
01:43Cardinal fans don't give a damn.
01:45They're terrible.
01:46They got nothing to crow about.
01:47Ram fans are busy doing God knows what.
01:50They couldn't even care less about their own freaking team.
01:53You got more visiting fans in that stadium than Rams fans.
01:56So, if not for the Hawks and Niners, what the hell else does this division even have to offer?
02:01I mean, look, it's a great point.
02:03And I give you guys credit because it's one of the few stadiums in America that does not turn red
02:08when the 49ers visit it.
02:10So, actually, let's go there for a second because we can speak to how our fan base and this fan
02:17base looks at this matchup.
02:19But the idea of the 49ers, this brings up what kind of emotions for the Seattle fan base?
02:26Well, it's a barometer, right?
02:28I know it's a barometer for you guys.
02:30It's a barometer for us, too.
02:31And, frankly, here's the deal, man.
02:33The Hawks are 3-1, and they haven't even really played their best football guys, honestly.
02:38I mean, they haven't had Darnold for, you know, just the last couple games, obviously, or the last game against
02:44the Commanders, the Chargers.
02:46He hasn't played great in the first couple games of the year by his standards.
02:51He's got a couple too many turnovers.
02:53The defense hasn't played great.
02:54Defense had a couple of third and longs against the Commanders in the fourth quarter against old man Mariota in
03:00D.C.
03:01Couldn't stop him.
03:02Gave up a couple of third and longs against Drake May.
03:05Couldn't stop him.
03:06I mean, you can argue maybe the only reason why the Hawks won the Patriot game is because Drake May
03:12is a bozo and threw a terrible pass and, you know,
03:15tight coverage and got picked off in that last play of the game against the Patriots in the opener.
03:20So he kind of gave it to us in some ways in that game.
03:22But I just feel like they haven't even really scratched the surface.
03:26Their running game has not been great.
03:28Their top two running backs are banged up in Jadarian Price and Zach Charbonnet, who's not going to play Sunday,
03:33but he might play next Thursday against Denver.
03:36So there's a part of me that feels like, look out, right?
03:40These guys are three and one and they're not even playing their best football yet, man.
03:44But three and one and you look at the gauntlet you have coming up and you've got a short week
03:48going to Denver.
03:49And then after that, you've got the Kansas City Chiefs.
03:52And so I wonder about the level of desperation for your team right now going into this game.
03:58Yeah.
03:59See, this is stupid crap that you say to me to get me all fired up and bait me into
04:03saying something dumb
04:04and I'm not going to fall for the bait.
04:05You've been saying something dumb as long as I've known you for three decades.
04:09All right.
04:09Listen, I'm just trying to fit in on this radio station.
04:12All right.
04:12For crying out loud.
04:13Is this the same station that has the, what's his name, the baby boy?
04:17Is he on this station or is that a different one?
04:19The baby boy?
04:20Is that right?
04:21The butcher?
04:22Butcher.
04:22The butcher boy.
04:23Yes.
04:24That's our guy.
04:25Yeah.
04:25Okay.
04:26Yeah.
04:26Because I went on his show about three years ago, cleaned his clock, and he's too freaking
04:31scared to have me back on the air.
04:33So at least you guys have the balls to put me on the show.
04:36We are.
04:36Good for you.
04:36Yeah.
04:37We are not scared of you, Softy.
04:39We are not scared of you.
04:40And that extends to your football team.
04:42Of course.
04:43There's nothing to be scared about.
04:45Well, I mean, desperation?
04:46No, I don't think so.
04:48I mean, it's game five.
04:49You know, Super Bowl champions coming off a championship, winning it in your stadium, which was
04:54absolutely wonderful.
04:56You guys were amazing hosts, really enjoyed everything that you did.
04:59I would have had the game.
05:00I would have had all the radio row crap in Santa Clara instead of bussing people back
05:05and forth for crying out loud.
05:06But, I mean, it was awesome.
05:08You know, winning a championship in your house is something that Seahawks fans will never,
05:12ever, ever forget.
05:13Like, I imagine, like, what would it be like if Oregon came up here and won a national championship
05:18at Husky Stadium or the Niners came up here and won a Super Bowl at Lumen Field?
05:22I mean, guys, honestly, I might want to burn the place down after something like that happened.
05:27So, that was wonderful.
05:29So, there's no desperation here at all.
05:31Softy, can I jump in on that?
05:32I got to be real with you.
05:34I know that you and maybe the Seahawks and maybe even the outside world, they looked at
05:42that as a thing.
05:43Like, ooh, it happened in your house.
05:46I'm like, right, but the Niners weren't there.
05:48So, like, I don't, I get that you think that's a thing.
05:53To me, it's a thing when they play each other.
05:56It's not, other than that, it's a building.
05:58Softy, you're one in a building.
06:00Yeah, no, no, no.
06:01I think it bothers you.
06:02I can tell in your tone of voice how much it bothers you.
06:04It really doesn't.
06:05And you know what?
06:06It would bother me, too.
06:08It would honestly bother me, too.
06:09I mean, look, I don't blame you.
06:10I mean, anybody's rival who comes into your stadium, whether a neutral setting or what,
06:16and they win a game of that magnitude on your field, that's got to be an issue.
06:22So, you know what?
06:23I appreciate the effort, but I can tell that it bothers you.
06:26Dave Softy Mahler here from Seattle on 95.7 The Game.
06:30God, I love you guys.
06:32And I love you, too, Softy.
06:33I love this town.
06:34And what probably bothers you is the fact that no Super Bowl will ever be held there.
06:39Like, they went to Minnesota.
06:40They went to Dallas when it was freezing.
06:43They went to New York.
06:44But they're not going up to Seattle.
06:46Hey, Softy, just real quick, why can't you guys run the ball?
06:50And, I mean, Kenneth Walker, MVP, you've got to go.
06:54Your rushing attack sucks.
06:56That was a good decision on Walker.
06:58Just wanted to let everybody know out there.
07:00Good job.
07:01First of all, time out to answer your question, Danny.
07:05They can't run the ball because their top two running backs are hurt.
07:07All right?
07:08I mean, pick up a newspaper.
07:09Jump on the Internet.
07:10You know, do a quick Google search, and maybe you'll learn something.
07:15Oh, wait, wait, wait.
07:16Is one of those top running backs the guy they got in the first round that wouldn't stop fumbling?
07:21That's an interesting label to give a guy who's played two NFL games in his life and keeps dropping the
07:26ball, Softy.
07:28I mean, you just gave it to him.
07:30I haven't given it to him yet.
07:31He's barely played, for crying out loud.
07:32You said top two running backs.
07:34I would argue your top running back plays for the Chiefs.
07:37Hmm.
07:38Okay.
07:39Well, I thought the Seahawks' top running backs were actually guys that played for the Seahawks.
07:43But, I don't know.
07:44Maybe we're doing this a little different now.
07:46Hey, by the way, I agree with you on the Kenny Walker thing.
07:48I would not have let him go.
07:50I think they made a mistake with Kenny Walker.
07:52But I do tell you what.
07:54Andy Reid's going to break that guy.
07:56He's on pace for 370 carries right now.
07:59You know how ridiculous that is for Kenny Walker, so there's no way that guy can keep up that pace.
08:04But I've said on my show, I've said on social media, I know you guys follow me because you want
08:09to learn something about football.
08:11I would have given the money to Kenny Walker.
08:13I would not have paid Rasheed Shaheed.
08:15You guys know how many touches Rasheed Shaheed is on pace for right now?
08:1943.
08:20That's not enough.
08:21They've got to get way more from number 22 for the $17 million they're paying him.
08:26And that's kind of part of what I'm talking about, right?
08:28This team is 3-1, and they haven't even scratched the surface yet with Rasheed Shaheed.
08:32But I agree with you.
08:34The running game has not been great.
08:35Emmanuel Wilson, for what they're asking him to do, has actually been okay.
08:39But they need way more than that if they're going to repeat, guys.
08:41No doubt.
08:42How does it feel to have Diet Purdy, Brock Purdy's understudy, while you watch the real McCoy Brock Purdy go
08:50out there and carve it up?
08:52Oh, you mean the Brock Purdy that's faced Mike McDonald six times in his 2-4 with nine interceptions?
08:58The Brock Purdy that's faced Mike McDonald six times, and in five of the six games, he's scored 19 points
09:03or less?
09:04Let me ask you a question.
09:05Is Brock Purdy going to wear a diaper when he pees himself, when he sees Mike McDonald on the opposite
09:10sideline this weekend?
09:12I mean, that is the absolute kryptonite for Brock Purdy, is Mike McDonald.
09:16So, you tell me why anybody should believe that Brock Purdy can put up points against Mike McDonald when he's
09:22done it six times, and he hasn't done it yet.
09:24Okay, so, Softy, let's dive into that a little bit.
09:26Because I'd argue that outside of the playoff game in Seattle last year, these games have all kind of had,
09:33they've had a pretty, well, wait a minute.
09:35Now, Sam Donald's not scoring a lot of points.
09:37Sam Donald's not scoring points on the Niners either.
09:40So, instead of the Purdy part of it, I'd love to hear your breakdown of the best coach in the
09:47NFL, Kyle Shanahan, versus Mike McDonald.
09:50Go ahead, break it down.
09:52First of all, Sam Donald doesn't need to score points on the Niners when you've got the dark side defense,
09:57which is the best defense in the National Football League.
09:59You know it, I know it, everybody else knows it.
10:02You also know it's all about winning football games for quarterbacks.
10:05That's why they keep track of quarterback win-loss records.
10:08Nobody's running around saying, what's a tight end's win-loss record?
10:11What's a left guard or a middle linebacker?
10:14Nobody cares.
10:14It's all about the quarterback, man.
10:16And this guy doesn't win games.
10:17He's 2-4 against Mike McDonald.
10:19He's throwing nine picks.
10:20I mean, it's brutal what he's done against McDonald.
10:22Number three or number four, whatever the hell number we're on, why would I take McDonald over Shanahan?
10:27I would take McDonald over Shanahan because I always want the defense.
10:32Always, always, always, always.
10:34I wanted the defense, not to make a college analogy, but I'll do it anyway.
10:37I wanted the Michigan defense against Washington with Pennix and those guys at Dunes A in 2023,
10:45but I couldn't have it because I had the offense, and the offense got shut down.
10:492013 NFC Championship game.
10:51Guys, I swear to God, one of the greatest throws I've ever seen a quarterback make was Colin Kaepernick rolling
10:57to his right,
10:58jumping up in the air, both feet off the ground, and hits Anquan Bolden for that touchdown.
11:02You guys remember that play against the Seahawks?
11:05Phenomenal, phenomenal.
11:06But it was the defense that won the day as well in that game.
11:10I will always, always want the great defense of mine over the great offense of mine.
11:15I don't think that's a terrible point, by the way, Softy.
11:18And the defense, look, they've got everybody's respect.
11:22It did sound like they're like you're asking Purdy to do a lot more than you ask of Darnold, though.
11:30Of course, because he's got a better defense.
11:32I mean, who's got a better defense, the Seahawks or Niners?
11:35You tell me, when healthy.
11:36Last year, the Seahawks did.
11:38I don't know yet this year.
11:40I don't know yet this year.
11:42Fair point.
11:43We're going to find out Sunday, but I do think that when you don't have that type of defense,
11:49that boa constrictor defense that the Seahawks have up in Seattle.
11:52Guys, look, this is the best defense since the LOB.
11:55I still think the LOB was better.
11:57They led the NFL in scoring defense four years in a row, which nobody's done since,
12:00and nobody had done for like 50 years.
12:02So this defense has a long way to go before they can be put in that same category.
12:07But they're freaking awesome.
12:09I mean, Nicky Manwari is listed as a safety.
12:11He's taken more snaps at edge rusher in a four-point stance than he is at safety.
12:16Julian Love, Ernest Jones, Leonard Williams, these guys show up here as pretty good players,
12:22and when they get here, they become stars.
12:25Ernest Jones was with the Rams and Titans.
12:26He was a trade deadline deal by Schneider two years ago, kind of a cast-off in Tennessee,
12:33and now he's become one of the best linebackers in the NFL.
12:36Julian Love with the Giants.
12:37Leonard Williams with the Giants.
12:38Good players, but not great players.
12:40And they come to play for Mike McDonald, who I believe is the best defensive mind on the planet,
12:45and they turn themselves into freaking stars, man.
12:47So it's easy.
12:49It's easy when you've got the best defense in the NFL.
12:53You don't need a lot from your quarterback.
12:55And the number one thing that this football team needs out of Sam Darnold is not turn the ball over.
13:00And he hasn't done that in the last couple of games.
13:03He's had a couple two-minute turnovers.
13:04We'll see what happens on Sunday.
13:06I say this reluctantly, but it's Dave Softy-Mahler, who somehow is joining us here on 95.7 The Game.
13:12He's from Seattle.
13:13He'll never leave Seattle.
13:15He's a one-trick, one-market pony in Seattle.
13:19I don't know about that, by the way.
13:21I'm getting kind of tired of this place.
13:22I might be out of here.
13:23Yeah, I mean, you can go ahead and branch out with your talent.
13:26Like maybe Boise or Spokane might have you.
13:32You're ripe for a downsize, to be honest.
13:35I'm going to go ahead and just say it.
13:37I don't know what you guys think or how much your audience agrees with this or not,
13:40but I'm getting sick and tired of West Coast politics, boys.
13:43You know, I may end up in Tuscaloosa before it's all said and done.
13:47Honestly, this place, there's a lot of good places, a lot of good things about Seattle,
13:52a lot of things about this city that suck.
13:53By the way, can I just go on a rant for a quick second?
13:55Do you guys mind?
13:56Rant it up?
13:57Briefly.
13:57Super popular take in San Francisco.
13:59Yeah, finally.
14:01Why did you pull the Niners out of San Francisco?
14:04I mean, what idiot made that call?
14:06What moron, what bozo politician made that move to pull the Niners out of Candlestick Point?
14:11I think of San Francisco 49er football.
14:14I think of Candlestick Park.
14:15I think of the Embarcadero.
14:17I think of downtown San Francisco.
14:19I think of Skoma's Italian seafood restaurant.
14:21That place, the DNA, the DNA of the Niners was San Francisco, not stuffy Santa Clara where
14:29there's nothing to do down there.
14:30There's nothing around the stadium.
14:32That place sucks, man.
14:33The stadium itself is nice.
14:35You got that stupid substation giving the players diseases.
14:38All right.
14:39From the facility.
14:41And if they're not getting diseases, I'm not done.
14:43Even if they're not getting diseases, it looks freaking terrible.
14:46And you guys know it.
14:47Even, like, if you want to take out Seattle, which is, you know, kind of a third-tier city
14:53where there's all kinds of land available.
14:55If you look at...
14:56You're not insulting me by saying that because...
14:59No, I'm not insulting anyone.
15:01Like, the Giants were able to immediately flex, get land, and build a stadium, but the Niners
15:05weren't.
15:05So, you could look at ownership and see maybe the through line there.
15:10But, yeah.
15:11I mean, don't even get me started on, you know, your lack of an NBA team and the Kraken over.
15:16Excited about the Kraken.
15:17And the Mariners.
15:19Oh, it's August.
15:20It's the Mariners.
15:21It's our time.
15:22But, be honest, Softie.
15:24Like, it was a nice little run last year, but your Seahawks, they're going nowhere.
15:29They have no offense.
15:30They're a paper tiger.
15:31Admit it.
15:32This is so typical of you.
15:36So tiresome of you.
15:38I actually...
15:39Danny, I know you're telling me off the air that you're getting tired of being in San Francisco.
15:44You're complaining about your co-host.
15:46That's wrong, Davey.
15:47You told me that before.
15:48So untrue.
15:49The show began.
15:50Way too secure for that, Softie.
15:52Doesn't do any work.
15:53You hate your program director.
15:55Your producer's lazy.
15:56I mean, I'll just keep all that between us.
15:59Okay.
15:59All right?
15:59I won't tell anybody that you said all that.
16:02All right?
16:02I know that's private.
16:04Oh, wait.
16:04Are we on the air right now?
16:05I'm sorry.
16:06I think we are, Softie.
16:07And, honestly, your segments are brought to us by the Postal Service because you mail it in.
16:13Of course, man.
16:14When you got my talent, how much work do you have to lose?
16:17Hey, hey, hey, Softie.
16:20Flip on the mic and go on the air.
16:21Softie, if we could get, give me 60 real seconds.
16:26No chance.
16:27On what you think is going to happen in this game.
16:30I think you guys are going to come up here and beat our ass.
16:33Yeah!
16:33That's what I think.
16:34You're going to come up here and you're going to drop us like a rock into Puget Sound.
16:38You're going to take us out like freaking Ralph Macchio and Karate Kid, man.
16:43You're going to do the crane.
16:44You're going to kick us right in the face.
16:46And the game's going to be over.
16:47We're going to go home bleeding and crying with our tails between our legs.
16:51That's what I think is going to happen.
16:52You know what?
16:53I guarantee it.
16:54Niners win Sunday.
16:56Guarantee it.
16:56So the answer to my question was no, no, you will not give us 60 real seconds on what
17:01you think is going to happen in the game.
17:02Well, I mean, look, is it possible you guys come up here and win?
17:05Of course it is.
17:06I mean, we're two and a half point favorites for God's sakes.
17:08I mean, this game is, you know, we're getting the obligatory three.
17:11It's a toss up for God's sakes.
17:12And you guys are getting a lot of guys back, I know, that didn't play in the division around
17:16Greenlaw, Fred Warner, George Kittle, blah, blah, blah.
17:19But I still wonder, honestly, if Mike McDonald's got Kyle Shanahan's number, right?
17:25I mean, and Brock Purdy's number.
17:27And I will go back to where I started.
17:29I will take Mike McDonald over Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay any day of the week.
17:34I think he's the best coach in the NFL.
17:36I think he's the best defensive mind on planet Earth right now.
17:39And the schemes this guy comes up with, they confuse a lot of quarterbacks, guys.
17:43And let's not forget, for as bad as this thing has gone so far with a lot of areas of
17:47this
17:47football team, brand new coordinator, you know him, your old tight ends coach, Brian Flurry,
17:51looking like Alec Guinness, the old Obi-Wan Kenobi, not the Ewan McGregor version,
17:55but the original one from the 70s.
17:57This guy scored 30 points in three of his four games, and they're not even clicking yet, baby.
18:01So look out.
18:02I mean, you have scoreboard right now, for the moment.
18:08For the moment.
18:09Yeah.
18:10All right.
18:12Softee, I hope you barf on.
18:13I hope you barf on.
18:14Can you have me back on Monday if you win?
18:15Sure, you come on whenever you want.
18:17Have you back on Monday?
18:18All right.
18:18I mean, no, not on Monday.
18:21I will give you the time.
18:22I will grace you with my presence on Monday.
18:25We don't do guests on Monday.
18:27Softee, you can come on on Tuesday.
18:28It's usually a victory Monday, so you go ahead and call on Tuesday with your softy tail between
18:33your softy legs.
18:35Was it a victory Monday after the Seahawks beat your ass 41-6 in the divisional game?
18:40I'm sorry.
18:41Your phone cut out.
18:42I didn't hear that.
18:43I'm sorry.
18:44We're going back to the past again.
18:46Did you want to talk about this?
18:47Wait a minute.
18:47Time out.
18:48Time out.
18:50I got to get me Jed's email.
18:53I got some hookers for him.
18:55I bet you do.
18:55I heard this about you.
19:00Oh, God.
19:01All right.
19:02Thanks, Softee.
19:04See you, man.
