Mark Schlereth joins Willard and Dibs to react to the 49ers' win over the Seahawks in Seattle to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Transcript
00:00His nickname is Iconic, but it sure doesn't fit the football team that we talk about on a weekly basis
00:08right now.
00:09Dibs, the Niners do not stink.
00:12No, they don't. They're smelling like a rose right now through five.
00:16But let's go to stink to talk about a team that doesn't stink.
00:20Out to the River Islands guest line, we're joined by Mark Slareth, our guy.
00:24NFL Insider Call presented by Nationwide for your insurance and financial needs.
00:29Nationwide is on your side.
00:32Hello, Stink. How are we doing this week?
00:34Man, I am doing great. How are you guys doing?
00:37Fantastic. I don't know if you heard, but the Niners and the Seahawks put together quite a show on Sunday.
00:42So for you, in that that that was for a lot of people, in some ways, the big offseason question.
00:50Could you make things look different against that team in that building?
00:55And they sure did. So so how do you adjust your opinion of the 49ers after that game?
01:02Yeah, that was a big time performance.
01:04Let's start with Christian McCaffrey in the running game.
01:07I think he had three explosive runs in that game.
01:09But production, I think he averaged over five yards of carry.
01:14I thought right off the bat, you go back to the last two games of the season last year, the
01:19last two games against Seattle, I should say, excuse me, of last year.
01:23I think it was a week 18 game where the Niners just got throttled.
01:28I mean, that was an ass whooping of biblical proportions.
01:31Like it was bad.
01:33And then the playoff game as well.
01:35And I think you go back and you look at like what transpired.
01:39I think they got whooped up front last year in those games.
01:43I thought San Francisco did the whooping this week.
01:46I thought their double teams were on point in their tight zone game, in their wide zone game.
01:52They got movement on the three techniques off the ball, got up to the second level linebackers.
01:57There was clean Salem for a couple of yards before Christian McCaffrey had to make a decision.
02:02And when you dominate the line of scrimmage like that, that's the first thing.
02:07The first thing.
02:08Then secondly, Brock Purdy is, and I've said this for two years, and people are finally starting to listen to
02:16me.
02:16He is a top five quarterback in the National Football League, bar none, period, stop.
02:22You cannot argue it.
02:24The guy is phenomenal.
02:25And I will tell you this.
02:27What was it, seven catches?
02:28I went back and watched both sides of the ball, man.
02:32I went back and studied this game.
02:34Seven catches for Mike Evans.
02:36I would tell you that he wasn't open on any of them.
02:40He was covered on every single one of them.
02:44Combat catches.
02:45Just making catches in traffic with dudes draped on it.
02:49And coming away with every one.
02:52And there's two things there.
02:53You know, what's open in college is not, it's like, oh, that's like in college.
02:58When you look at a professional football, right?
03:01What is, what is completely covered in professional football is wide open.
03:05I mean, excuse me.
03:06What's completely covered in college is wide open in professional football.
03:09And what you saw is a dude with just, I mean, Randy Marsh type of testicles that you got to
03:19roll around in a wheelbarrow from Brock Purdy because he had zero fear about throwing to a guy who is
03:26completely covered.
03:27You don't have to dump testicles.
03:29That's a good word.
03:29I can see you looking.
03:31No, no, no.
03:31I can see you thinking.
03:32Yeah, no, we're good.
03:33We're good here.
03:33I think a lot of people thought you were about to say Randy Moss.
03:36Right.
03:36And then it, right, it got adjusted in the South Park.
03:38And everybody's, not everybody.
03:40No, we're good.
03:41Some people got it and we're good.
03:42Yeah.
03:43Yeah.
03:43Okay, good.
03:43Because Brock Purdy is, Brock Purdy is fearless.
03:48Like, fearless.
03:49And, like, I look at that, listen, if Kenneth Walker is the number one signing in free agency on the
03:57year so far for Kansas City and what he has brought to that football team, then Mike Evans is 1A.
04:03Dude, that dude is, that dude, he might not quite run as well as he used to, but that dude
04:09is a football playing Jesse.
04:11And he had one of the all-time taunts, one of the all-time disses that I have ever seen
04:18in my entire life.
04:20And I literally rewound it 22 times and laughed my ass off as I was watching it.
04:26One of the great, just turn around to see who Diggs is.
04:29I don't even know who you are.
04:30Let me look at your name.
04:31Yeah.
04:31That's one of the all-time greatest things I've ever seen.
04:33It's phenomenal.
04:34And I'm glad you put that out there as far as, like, the free agency rankings.
04:38And it's not really a ranking, but just talk about that last drive where the Niners didn't really move the
04:43ball much at all.
04:44And yet, Mike Evans was able to go up and make a couple of amazing catches on great throws.
04:49Yeah.
04:50You know, I do a Seattle hit every week, too.
04:54And so, they're like, you know, what should we do different?
04:57Like, should we have double-teamed Mike Evans?
04:59What should we do every day?
05:00I go, dude, he's covered.
05:02What are you going to do that's different?
05:04The one he caught down the sideline, I think it was 28 yards down the sideline.
05:08I mean, Joe had him covered.
05:10I mean, he's completely covered.
05:12It's probably past interference he was so well covered.
05:14Oh, let me just pluck this out of the air real quick.
05:17The two touchdowns he had.
05:18Come on, dude.
05:19Like, the two touchdowns he had.
05:21He had zero separation.
05:23But I'm bigger and stronger than you.
05:24I can box you out, and I got great hands.
05:26Throw it.
05:27But, I mean, can you imagine the confidence that you have of your Brock Purdy and that dude?
05:33If I just throw it, it doesn't matter.
05:34If I throw it to him, man, he's going to catch it.
05:37I'd just put it anywhere close.
05:38I mean, that was amazing.
05:42It was a really, for me, it was a really cool thing.
05:45Because you guys know I'm a secret San Francisco 49er fan.
05:48So, that was a really, you know, for me, that was a really cool, just a really cool thing.
05:52Hey, Stink, let's daydream on that for a second, because you have been a Brock Purdy supporter for a while.
05:58And, listen, they've been to a Super Bowl.
06:01I don't want to diss the year where it was Ayuk and Debo and Jennings.
06:05These guys achieved really good things in San Francisco uniforms.
06:10But when I look around the league at some of the other quarterbacks who really get propped up,
06:15Matt Stafford with Devontae and Puka, Joe Burrell with Jamar Chase and T. Higgins,
06:21the Mike Evans thing kind of takes your mind where with regard to Brock Purdy
06:26if he were ever to have a wide receiver core like that?
06:32Yeah, I mean, listen, I always look at that.
06:36I look at Kyle Shanahan and the way you orchestrate your offense
06:40and the way you sequence your offense.
06:43Like Brock Purdy, and I've said this forever, you know, with all kinds of quarterbacks,
06:48when people complain about, well, we don't have the receiving core.
06:52And, man, good quarterbacks should, or a great quarterback should take a good receiver
06:57and make him great, take a great receiver and make him, you know, Hall of Fame type of caliber.
07:02Brock Purdy elevates the people he plays around with.
07:05They call him all the time in the NFL.
07:06They'll say, this guy is a force multiplier.
07:08He is.
07:09He's just a force multiplier.
07:11His ability to read a defense, his ability to get through it quickly,
07:14and then his ability to just move on.
07:16I did the Cincinnati Bengals versus the Miami Dolphins this weekend,
07:20and, you know, I'm diametrically opposed to the way Cincinnati runs their offense,
07:25and, you know, everybody in Cincinnati hates my guts.
07:28I got in a three-hour rabbit hole.
07:29I watched every throw that Joe Burrow has made this year.
07:33And I went into the meeting.
07:36This is on the Stinky Truth podcast.
07:38You can listen to it today.
07:39But I went into the meeting with Zach Taylor, and I said to him, I feel like I owe you
07:43an apology.
07:44But I'm not going to give you one.
07:45I just want you to know I'm not giving you one.
07:47But I just feel like, I mean, I go, I watched three hours of Joe Burrow,
07:50and I kind of see why you guys don't run it.
07:53Like, I mean, it's that good.
07:55And that's the way Brock Purdy processes information, like Joe Burrow does.
08:01Joe Burrow is the second quarterback in the league as far as time to throw, you know,
08:04from snap to throw at 2.54 seconds.
08:10And people think, oh, well, that's a quick game.
08:11No, it's not.
08:13That's quick processing.
08:14They're not running a bunch of quick game.
08:16They're running five-steppers.
08:17They're running, you know, they're running seven-steppers.
08:19They're running a regular offense.
08:20It's not all quick game.
08:22It's not all bubble screens.
08:23It's not.
08:24But he gets rid of the ball so quickly because he can just eliminate something instantly
08:29and get to the backside.
08:29And that's what Brock Purdy does, and not enough people pay attention to it.
08:35You know, I got Chicago.
08:36I get people mad at me all across the country.
08:38Chicago people are mad at me because I said that Caleb Williams,
08:43they go, who's better, Caleb Williams or Brock Purdy?
08:45I was Brock Purdy, and it's not close.
08:47I mean, it's not even – that's not even a conversation.
08:50And now everybody's mad, you know, and I'm like, well,
08:52if you want to talk about who's the more dynamic athlete, yeah, it's Caleb Williams.
08:57But you don't win in the National Football League playing off schedule 50% or 60% of the time.
09:04It just doesn't work that way.
09:05You got to be on – I call it the 70-30 rule.
09:0770% of the time, you got to be on schedule.
09:0930% of the time, things break down, and you got to make a play.
09:13But when that happens, Brock Purdy all of a sudden shows his athleticism as well.
09:18Like, man, I'm a huge fan.
09:20The only thing that has set Brock Purdy back is injuries.
09:23That's it.
09:24But he's just – he's an exceptional, exceptional quarterback.
09:27Catch the Stink and Truth podcast, by the way, Saturdays right here on 95.7 The Game at 7 a
09:32.m.
09:32So if you don't want to search it out, just, you know, wake and take it in and enjoy Stink
09:38right here on 95.7.
09:39I want to ask you about the idea of complimentary football because that was a little bit of a turnover
09:44fest,
09:45kind of a rock fight early.
09:46How important was it that Raheem Morris' defense was so ferocious to keep them in that?
09:53Yeah, no question.
09:54Very – I mean, very important.
09:57Creating a couple of turnovers off of Sam Darnall and the interceptions, a couple of fumbles,
10:01the fumble for a touchdown.
10:03You know, those things are – those things are exceptionally important.
10:06It's still the number one stat in football when it comes to winning and losing.
10:09You win the turnover battle, you're going to win the game.
10:11And, you know, that came true again in this particular game.
10:17But, you know, I think that is obviously having that kind of aggressiveness on defense,
10:23having the ability to create turnovers, and playing with an edge.
10:28I mean, they play with an edge.
10:28And obviously, Dre Greenlaw, you can't headbutt people on the sideline, but I love Dre Greenlaw.
10:35Like, I would love to play with Dre Greenlaw because that dude is – he's one of those dudes that
10:40you hate his guts
10:41if he's not on your team and you absolutely love him.
10:44I played with Bill Romanowski.
10:45I played against him in San Francisco.
10:47I played against him with the Philadelphia Eagles.
10:49I became his teammate in Denver.
10:51Loved him.
10:52Hated him everywhere he was.
10:53Hated him when I played against him.
10:55Loved him.
10:56And those are the type of guys you want on your team.
10:58Dre Greenlaw is one of the few people, I think, in this league.
11:01And there's not very many of them – and you've got two of them on your squad, by the way
11:06–
11:06that intimidate other players.
11:08Dre Greenlaw is one, and the other dude is – and the other dude is Trent Williams.
11:12Everybody's scared of Trent Williams.
11:15I'm scared of Trent.
11:16I'm sitting in Denver right now scared of Trent Williams.
11:20Nationwide is so much more than a great insurance company.
11:24They're one of America's largest financial services companies, too.
11:27Nationwide is on your side.
11:28We're having our weekly visit with Stink, Mark Slareth, right here on Willard & Tibbs.
11:3195-7 the game.
11:33Hey, I want to go back to your comment about Brock Purdy.
11:36Great quarterbacks make good wide receivers great, make great ones Hall of Fame.
11:40So, therefore, with Debo going down, Christian Kirk's not ready,
11:45Dajon Stribling's out, Demarcus Robinson is out,
11:48but all of them are slated to come back.
11:50But the discussion is, hey, should the 49ers be aggressive
11:54and trade for wide receiver help?
11:57I get concerned about what that would mean in the back half of the year
12:00when the room is kind of overloaded.
12:03But what do you think?
12:04Do the 49ers need to trade for more wide receiver help?
12:10I think one of the things that makes the 49ers the 49ers
12:14is the continuity of offense and everybody on the same page.
12:19And I think it's one of the reasons that you can lose a use check
12:23and you can still run the ball.
12:25It's one of the reasons you can drop a couple receivers
12:27and you can still be really good.
12:29Kyle Shanahan bases his offense out of multiple backs and multiple tight ends.
12:35And they are so good at using their personnel groupings
12:41and creating one play that's one play for the offense,
12:46but it looks like seven or eight different plays for the defense.
12:49And then all of a sudden,
12:50it's got five or six different play actions off of that one play.
12:55And they can run it out of three wides
12:57or they can run it out of two tights
12:59or they can run it out of a 21
13:01or they can run it out of, you know, 22.
13:03Like, they do such a great job with that.
13:06I wouldn't be in a hurry.
13:08And I'm sure they probably got somebody stashed on the practice squad
13:11who's ready to break out and go,
13:12who the hell is that dude, right?
13:14And I think continuity of understanding and teaching
13:18is one of the most important things that you can do.
13:22And I think the Niners probably do that better than anybody else.
13:25I mean, the fact that the 49ers went 12-5 last year
13:30with the injuries that they had
13:32and they sustained over the course of the season.
13:34Like, this is why most of the people, not all,
13:39but let's just say a large percentage of the people
13:42who vote for these awards are stupid.
13:44They're just dumb.
13:45Because how do you have that number of injuries
13:48and you still win 12 games and go to the playoffs
13:51in that division and you're not the coach of the year?
13:56Like, how does that happen?
13:59Like, how are we that short-sighted?
14:03And how, well, it's just the same thing.
14:04Is Brock Purdy isn't good
14:06because Brock Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant
14:08in a seventh-round draft choice.
14:10Do you guys watch, do you watch film?
14:13Do you study the game?
14:14Do you look at, or do you ever change your opinion?
14:18Do you change your pre-draft opinion based on film
14:22and based on evidence that you see?
14:24Or do you just go with,
14:26well, Brock Purdy's not good
14:27because he was a seventh-rounder
14:29and he was Mr. Irrelevant.
14:30Like, it's mind-boggling to me.
14:33How Mike Shanahan, when you flip on the NFL
14:35and 65% of the offenses
14:39are the offense that I ran in the NFL
14:42and it's all the Mike Shanahan offense,
14:44how do you bypass that guy
14:46when Hall of Fame voting comes up?
14:48How stupid are you voters?
14:50We should rip every voter's voting rights away
14:54and give it to people who actually study the game,
14:56people that know the game.
14:58I mean, when you say 65% of all the offense
15:01is a derivative of what Mike Shanahan
15:04installed in Denver all those years ago,
15:07and that's what we see every weekend,
15:09and that's why Mike McDonald in Seattle
15:12dumped his offensive coordinator
15:14and went and got Clint Kubiak.
15:15He goes, because this is the toughest offense
15:17as a coordinator that I've ever had to face,
15:20and that's what I want,
15:21and that's what's going on in the NFL
15:23on just about every team,
15:25and yet that guy gets bypassed for the Hall of Fame?
15:28Like, we just allow stupid people to vote.
15:32That's it. Just dumb people.
15:33Well, Nick, you know that they did actually
15:35change the voting body this past year,
15:38so now it's going to be a whole different group,
15:40and, you know, Bill Belichick...
15:41Did they hire more dumb people to vote?
15:44Is that... I mean, I'm not aware of who's in there.
15:47Honestly, Stink, they got rid of a bunch of smart people,
15:49including Matt Maioco from our market
15:51who knows more football than maybe any other reporter,
15:55so I wouldn't hold my breath
15:56that it's going to be a positive change
15:58because, what, Bill Belichick is not a Hall of Famer
16:01somehow because he's got a 26-year-old girlfriend?
16:03I mean, what are we even doing out here, Stink?
16:06Right. I had... By the way,
16:07I had a voter who was presenting...
16:12He was presenting...
16:14Oh, shoot. His name escaped me all of a sudden.
16:18The guard that originally was at Seattle
16:21and then went to Minnesota, a Hall of Fame guard,
16:24and he was up against several other guys.
16:27You'll know it as soon as I say it,
16:29as soon as I tell you the story,
16:31but the guy's like, man, I don't know.
16:33I'm presenting this guy,
16:35and I don't know how I'm going to present him
16:37because there's so many other good offensive linemen.
16:41Steve Hutchinson?
16:42It was Hutchinson.
16:43Hutchinson, yeah.
16:43Steve Hutchinson.
16:45So they're like, I don't know.
16:47I mean, I just don't know if I can get him in.
16:48You know, I've got my presentation,
16:51but there's what sets him apart.
16:53And I said, I go to the voter,
16:55I go, you're kidding me, right?
16:56He goes, no.
16:58He goes, I don't know.
16:59I go, you're kidding me.
17:01He goes, no.
17:02I go, just walk up,
17:04stand in front of the committee,
17:06say poison pill,
17:07and slam your hand on the table
17:10and walk off.
17:12Like, he was so valuable a player
17:15that the Minnesota Vikings created a poison pill
17:18so Seattle couldn't keep him in his contract.
17:21If that doesn't say Hall of Fame,
17:23what are you guys doing over there?
17:25It's ridiculous.
17:27Speaking of what are you guys doing over there,
17:29we don't want to get too ahead of ourselves,
17:32but the next 49er opponent
17:35is against a team that wears a uniform
17:37that you once wore,
17:39and they had an interesting Sunday.
17:41Oh, boy.
17:42Would love to hear you
17:43give a thought or two
17:45about the end of the Commanders game last week.
17:48Yeah, I mean,
17:50malfeasance of game-ending operation.
17:53And now I promise you,
17:55they're in 13 personnel
17:57in that last play.
17:59They're in 13 personnel,
18:01and they're running the tight end on the outside.
18:04Those two guys are running off coverage,
18:07and they're running a motion tight end across
18:09who's just running a flat.
18:11That's the only route you're trying to throw.
18:13And the Giants play man-to-man,
18:15basically zero coverage everywhere else.
18:17But what ends up happening is Thibodeau doubles.
18:21So he's the defensive end,
18:22and he jumps the underneath
18:24because they knew what was coming.
18:26He jumps the flat,
18:27and they've got somebody over the top.
18:29And I guarantee you
18:31that that quarterback was told
18:33you can't run this ball
18:34if it's not open,
18:36throw it away.
18:37Just throw it away.
18:38Just throw it out of bounds, right?
18:39What does he do?
18:40He pulls the ball down,
18:42and probably because he's pissed
18:44that he saw somebody wearing a five jersey
18:46that's not authorized to wear a five jersey
18:48because that's what he's thinking about.
18:50And then he's just laying around on the ground
18:52like they've got a timeout.
18:53And you can see all of a sudden
18:55the pucker factor, right?
18:57When they realize,
18:58oh, we don't got no timeout,
18:59and we just sent, you know,
19:00some fat tight ends down the football field
19:02to run deep
19:03because this was either going to be
19:05a completion out of bounds
19:06or you're just going to throw it out of bounds.
19:08And our moron quarterback
19:10who's worried about suing people at LSU
19:12or whatever the hell's going on
19:14has no, you know,
19:16like, the thing about coaching,
19:19like, you have all the power as a coach
19:23and none of the control.
19:25You know you went in there and said,
19:27hey, man, listen,
19:27we don't have a timeout left.
19:28If this isn't open, just throw it away.
19:30You can't take a sack.
19:31You can't.
19:32And what does he do?
19:33I mean, completely.
19:36Dude, I just like the level of incompetency.
19:40And then, you know,
19:41like a good head coach,
19:42Dan Quinn jumps on the sword, right?
19:44But that's just stupidity
19:48from number five
19:49who all season,
19:50all offseason was worried about,
19:52you know,
19:53some young player coming in
19:55and wearing a five at LSU.
19:56What did you do at LSU?
19:58How many national championships
19:59do you win at LSU?
20:00How many Heismans do you win at LSU?
20:02But who the hell do you think you are
20:05that you can't,
20:06that nobody else can wear
20:07number five at LSU?
20:09Give me a break.
20:10What a, that,
20:11and I like that kid,
20:12but that is,
20:13that's one of the stupidest things
20:14that I've ever witnessed.
20:15Well, and the whole run-up to it too,
20:17which is, you know,
20:17we're just going to let the clock run
20:18and then we're going to finally run
20:20this cockamamie 13 personnel,
20:23three tight end play.
20:24The whole thing was a disaster.
20:25Stink,
20:26why do so many of these modern coaches
20:28hate the field goal?
20:29And I'm thinking about the Jacksonville,
20:31the wake,
20:32the wake-up game
20:33and all these teams,
20:34like they don't want to take the three.
20:37Yeah,
20:37I,
20:38I don't know.
20:39I am,
20:40you know,
20:41because,
20:42again,
20:43because of how stupid we are,
20:44right?
20:45We let some guy
20:46that's never made a tackle,
20:48that's never blocked anybody,
20:50that,
20:51you know,
20:51past,
20:52you know,
20:53trigonometry in,
20:54in the 10th grade,
20:56tell you what you should be doing
20:57on a football field.
20:58Like,
20:59all the analytics people,
21:00I hate all your guts.
21:01I don't like any of you.
21:04And,
21:04you know what,
21:05and we have gotten to the point
21:06where all of a sudden
21:07we don't value three points.
21:09Like,
21:10I don't understand,
21:12and I know what they say.
21:13Well,
21:14you know,
21:14if we miss the conversion
21:17on fourth down,
21:18the other team's got to drive 99,
21:20and the percentage says
21:21they're going to,
21:22I don't care.
21:24If I drove it all the way down there,
21:26I want to at least come away
21:28with three points
21:28and feel like I succeeded
21:31as opposed to feeling like I failed,
21:34that's another one
21:35that,
21:36that just absolutely drives me insane.
21:40Stink,
21:41great stuff.
21:41I took the over on five and a half stupids
21:44in this conversation,
21:45and I won.
