00:01An ICE agent shoots a man in New York City with a 5-year-old boy in the backseat, Mayor
00:06Zoran Mamdani, is furious.
00:08New York City will not stand by while ICE agents shoot New Yorkers.
00:13Plus, a high-stakes Senate debate in Michigan.
00:16The candidates clash over Trump's tariffs, and control of the Senate could hinge on who wins.
00:21And after more than 10 months away, the USS Lincoln returns home.
00:25For dozens of sailors, it's their first chance to meet their new babies.
00:31The stories that matter, the facts you can trust.
00:35From across the country to around the world, this is Unbiased Updates from Straight Arrow.
00:43Hey everybody, I'm Christian Bryant.
00:45Glad you're hanging out with us this morning.
00:46Let's get you caught up and ready for the day ahead.
00:49An ICE agent shoots a man in New York City with a 5-year-old child in the backseat of
00:53his car.
00:54Now, protests are erupting and the city's mayor is calling for ICE to be abolished.
00:59Demonstrators clashed with police overnight following the shooting in New York's Marble Hill neighborhood.
01:04It happened around 4 Thursday afternoon in a mostly residential area as children were coming home from school.
01:11Bystander video shows an ICE agent wearing a construction vest holding a gun as a man is taken into custody.
01:17The Department of Homeland Security says agents were carrying out a targeted enforcement operation when one of them fired his
01:24weapon.
01:25Police say the 28-year-old man was shot in the neck and taken to the hospital in stable condition.
01:30The 5-year-old boy was in the car at the time but was not injured.
01:34Mayor Zoran Wamdani is condemning the shooting and renewing his call to abolish ICE.
01:39Let me say this plainly, what happened today was an outrage.
01:45We know, and I have said this directly, whether to the president or to the public, ICE undermines public safety.
01:53It makes us less safe.
01:56New York City will not stand by while ICE agents shoot New Yorkers.
02:00And we will not back down from the demand that so many, including myself, have put forward time and again.
02:07This is an agency that must be abolished.
02:10Governor Kathy Hochul is also condemning the shooting, saying it could have easily ended in tragedy.
02:16She says she spoke with President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullen
02:20and is demanding the release of any body camera footage to help establish what happened.
02:26Hurricane Isaias has strengthened into a Category 2 storm and is now bearing down on the Gulf Coast.
02:32With the Florida panhandle in its path, residents are bracing for dangerous winds, flooding, and storm surge.
02:38Residents are also filling sandbags and preparing for flooding,
02:41with forecasters warning of storm surge as high as 5 to 7 feet.
02:45States of emergency are in effect in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and several Mississippi counties.
02:50Mandatory evacuations are underway in parts of Florida, and thousands of National Guard troops are being deployed.
02:58Isaias could briefly strengthen into a major Category 3 hurricane today,
03:02before weakening to a Category 1 as it approaches landfall near the Florida-Alabama state line.
03:08But the exact track remains uncertain, and the threat extends well beyond the coast,
03:13with heavy rain and flooding possible as far north as Tennessee and North Carolina through the weekend.
03:18Two candidates in one of the most closely-watched Senate races of the midterms faced off Thursday night.
03:24Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed clashed over high gas prices,
03:29Medicare for all, and President Trump's tariffs, particularly those on Canada.
03:34That's a big issue in Michigan, where the auto industry relies heavily on cross-border trade.
03:39Rogers previously supported Trump's plans for higher tariffs on Canada,
03:43but in a new campaign ad this week, he called for an end to the back-and-forth trade dispute.
03:48El-Sayed says tariffs can still play a role, but argues they should follow the approach backed by the United
03:54Auto Workers Union.
03:55I would like to see the deal made.
03:57I have actually called the White House this week, talked to the Secretary of Commerce about getting the deal done.
04:05Canada still has some high tariffs for U.S. goods, and they did it before this started.
04:09Those should be eliminated.
04:12Look, you're hearing somebody who has cheerlead, again, a Canadian tariff policy that we are paying $5,600 a year
04:21for.
04:21If we were serious about using tariffs, we would do it in the way that the UAW has advocated.
04:26The UAW has advocated for smart tariffs, where we actually hook it to an industrial policy that makes sense.
04:31The race to replace retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters remains extremely close.
04:37According to NBC News, most polls show Rogers and El-Sayed neck-and-neck,
04:41and the outcome could help determine whether Republicans keep control of the Senate.
04:46President Trump says the U.S. will not launch any new attacks on Iran before the November 3rd midterms,
04:52and he says talks with Tehran are making progress even as the Pentagon prepares to send more troops and another
04:57aircraft carrier to the region.
04:59In a post-Thursday, Trump said the U.S. is having what he calls productive discussions with Iran.
05:04He also made clear the American blockade of Iranian oil will stay in place,
05:09and repeated his demand that Iran never obtain a nuclear weapon.
05:13The U.S. military has been escorting more oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz,
05:17helping Gulf countries get their oil to market while blocking Iran's exports.
05:22But Iran has stepped up attacks on tankers in recent days.
05:25The two sides are still trying to reach a deal after an earlier cease-fire agreement collapsed.
05:30Iran says it expects to respond to a new U.S. proposal within days.
05:34And fighting is intensifying near another major shipping route.
05:38Saudi Arabia and Yemen's government are trying to drive Iran-backed Houthi rebels from the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.
05:45The Houthis are responding with attacks on Saudi targets.
05:48The Pentagon is also sending more firepower to the region.
05:52The USS Theodore Roosevelt and thousands of additional troops could arrive by the end of October, just days before the
05:59midterms.
06:00And as the USS Theodore Roosevelt heads to the Middle East, another aircraft carrier is finally back home.
06:07The USS Abraham Lincoln has returned to San Diego after more than 10 months away, including a record stretch without
06:14a port call.
06:15Thousands of sailors reunited with their families Thursday, including dozens of new dads, meeting their babies for the very first
06:22time.
06:23The Lincoln left San Diego last November and reached the Middle East in January, just before the U.S. and
06:28Israel began striking Iran.
06:30The carrier spent a record 265 straight days at sea without a port call.
06:35And that extended deployment took a toll, with reports of supply shortages and mental health struggles among the crew.
06:41The USS George Washington relieved the Lincoln in August, clearing the way for its return home.
06:47And this week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth presented the crew with the Presidential Unit Citation, the highest honor awarded to
06:55a military unit.
06:57New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani is standing by his comments about Israel and Gaza on the anniversary of the
07:04October 7th Hamas attacks.
07:05His remarks have drawn criticism from Jewish leaders and fellow Democrats, and he's also facing protests from pro-Palestinian activists.
07:14Mamdani attended a vigil in Manhattan Wednesday night to remember those killed in the attacks three years ago.
07:22But pro-Palestinian protesters interrupted the gathering, booing the mayor and chanting at him.
07:28Earlier that day, Mamdani condemned the Hamas attack as a horrific war crime, but he also accused Israel of carrying
07:35out what he called an ongoing genocide in Gaza, citing more than 74,000 Palestinian deaths.
07:41Israel rejects the genocide accusation.
07:44New York Democratic Congressman Dan Goldman called Mamdani's statement reprehensible.
07:48He accused the mayor of using the anniversary to make disputed claims that would further upset people mourning the victims.
07:55Reporters press Mamdani Thursday on whether he regretted his words.
07:59He defended his statement and had this to say about the protesters.
08:03You know, I was proud to attend last night's vigil, as I did last year, to listen to testimonies from
08:12family members of those who were killed on October 7th and those who've been killed in the three years since.
08:19And all of whom united in a vision for peace and an end to the genocide in Gaza.
08:27And when we're speaking of that genocide, we're speaking of one that has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians in
08:33the last three years.
08:34As for those protesting me, I am the mayor of New York City, and this is what I signed up
08:39for.
08:39Mamdani also says he wouldn't change his statement despite the backlash.
08:45Finally this morning, Democrats are making some unexpected gains in Republican-leaning states this midterm cycle.
08:51And even former President Barack Obama says he didn't see some of these races getting this competitive.
08:56According to the Washington Post, Obama told donors earlier this week that several states are now in play that he
09:02never expected to be competitive.
09:04He pointed to races in Kansas, Nebraska, Georgia, and Texas.
09:08And Obama is getting more involved as Election Day gets closer.
09:11He's reportedly recorded at least two dozen campaign ads for Democratic Senate and governor candidates.
09:17He's also scheduled a campaign with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Detroit later this month.
09:23President Trump is making his own pitch to Republican voters, urging them to vote as though his name were on
09:29the ballot.
09:30Earlier this week, I asked Straight Arrow senior politics reporter Ozzy Pabra about the role presidents can play in these
09:36final weeks before the midterms.
09:38Well, if you have someone like Obama to come in, who can really rally, you know, progressive, left-leaning, infrequent
09:45voters,
09:46well, you just shrunk the amount of time your candidate has to run from like 24 months maybe to, you
09:52know, 23 and a half or so.
09:55Once Obama ads start coming out, once Trump ads really start coming out,
09:59you're hitting like a different wavelength of voters' consciousness, you know, people who are checked in, checked out.
10:06So whatever team can like get their candidates in best position as close to that like final sprint,
10:14that's when you get, you know, the big guns coming in and just dropping these big ads.
