00:02For the first time, a federal immigration officer is facing charges from the Trump administration
00:06over his actions during the massive immigration crackdown in Minnesota. According to the Associated
00:12Press, ICE officer Christian Castro is accused of lying to federal investigators about a shooting
00:18in Minneapolis back in January. Castro shot Julio Cesar Sosa-Seles in the leg during an
00:24immigration operation. Federal authorities initially said Sosa-Seles and another man
00:29attacked an officer with a broom handle and a snow shovel, but prosecutors later dropped the
00:34charges against both men after video evidence raised questions about the officer's account.
00:40And if you're watching us this morning, here's some of that video. It shows an immigration agent
00:45chasing a man toward a home, followed by a brief struggle on the ground. Two people then run inside.
00:51Minnesota prosecutors say Castro later fired through the front door, hitting Sosa-Seles in the thigh.
00:56Castro is now accused of making false statements to the FBI about what happened.
01:01The federal case is separate from assault and false reporting charges Castro already faces in Minnesota,
01:06and a federal investigation into whether he should face a more serious civil rights charge
01:11is still open. Castro was released from this jail in Texas last week after Minnesota's attempt to have
01:16him extradited was blocked. He was suspended from ICE without pay in February. An attorney for Sosa-Seles
01:23says the false statement charge doesn't go far enough. He's calling for civil rights charges as well.
