Doug Kammerer joins the program to preview this weekend's DC weather forecast as rain is expected for Giants vs. Commanders on Sunday.
Transcript
00:00Joining us now via the Rude Guest Hotline is our friend Mr. Doug Kammerer, Chief Meteorologist, NBC4.
00:06Doug, what's up, buddy? How are you?
00:08Hey, guys.
00:09What up, Doug?
00:10Happy Friday.
00:10Yeah, man. Thank you for making time.
00:13A little bit of good news for you.
00:14McLaurin back on the practice field this morning certainly doesn't...
00:18I like that.
00:19Yeah, I mean, it's better than the opposite, right?
00:22Well, yeah, I mean, what do we know about Diggs?
00:26He's not out there today, so...
00:28Yeah, so you got, I mean, you take away, Jaden's coming back, and then you take away two of his
00:31weapons,
00:32and then you talk about a potential for a wet field, and I'm still worried about that elbow.
00:37Yeah, I think the brace should have it pretty stabilized, but we got to see him doing it.
00:42You know what I mean?
00:43Yeah.
00:43You know what I'm more happy about?
00:46Cosme possibly being back.
00:47Yeah, I think that's bigger than Diggs and Stephon.
00:51Just stabilize that O-line, make it they can run the ball.
00:54Okay, I like that.
00:56I talked to Sam at length yesterday in the locker room.
00:58He seems excited to be back out there.
01:00I asked him, what's it like watching?
01:02He's like, man, I hate watching games on TV.
01:05All I want to do is be out there.
01:07Doug, I haven't talked to you.
01:09I don't think I've seen you.
01:10How disappointed were you?
01:11Wake up early, watch the London game, and then see that result?
01:16Oh, gosh.
01:17I mean, that was just a debacle, wasn't it?
01:20I mean, it was just terrible to wake up and get excited about something that's different
01:25for you, and then to go through the kind of game that we went through.
01:29It was just ugly.
01:30Yeah.
01:31You know, it was just ugly.
01:33I mean, I like the fact that our third-string quarterback did well.
01:37Tough to win with the third-stringer out there.
01:39I thought he showed some poise.
01:41Yeah, for sure.
01:42I agree with you.
01:43Well, we know he was not looking short, Doug.
01:46He was looking deep every time.
01:48Yeah, he was, and that's the thing about it.
01:49That's right.
01:50He wasn't just trying to control the ball.
01:51I mean, he was taking shots.
01:53So, I love the fact that he was doing that.
01:55I just want us to go, if we're going to go to these games, and we're going to play like
01:59last year in Madrid, and then we go to London, and we're going to just lay an egg every
02:04time we go, no fun.
02:07International hasn't been great the last two years.
02:09All right.
02:10Speaking of not great, let's talk about Sunday's weather, commanders hosting the Giants.
02:15I mean, maybe if you just want to get us from here to Sunday, and then where the storm's
02:21coming from, what your expectations are.
02:23Yeah, so we're tracking this hurricane down in the Gulf, Hurricane Isaias.
02:27Isaias.
02:29Isaias.
02:30Everybody's like, yeah, I remember that storm, because we did have the same storm six years
02:34ago.
02:34You know, the storms, the names can get recycled every few years, every six years.
02:40So, Isaias right now is a major hurricane, Category 3, 120-mile-an-hour storm that's making
02:45its way through the Gulf, and it will move our way.
02:47The good news is, it's going to be a much weaker storm.
02:50So, we're not going to have like a stormy day for us on Sunday, but it is going to be
02:56a very wet day.
02:57Now, the biggest thing about it is, I feel for anybody who's going out to, I almost said
03:02FedEx.
03:03Northwest.
03:04Well, you said FedEx, anybody going to Northwest is definitely going to have a problem as far
03:10as tailgating goes.
03:11I think the heaviest rain actually falls during the early part of the day, and then we see
03:14some later, some showers during the afternoon, but they could be, any of them could be on
03:18the heavy side.
03:19And depending on where the storm actually goes, does it go just north of us?
03:24Does it go just south of us?
03:26That could have a dependency on any kind of thunderstorm activity, anything like that.
03:31So, right now, I'm just thinking it's going to be plain rain, but it's not going to be
03:34a very nice Sunday for football, for sure.
03:37Doug, one of my questions, and I don't know if you can answer this, right?
03:41So, this storm is coming up.
03:43It looks like it's going to hit kind of, I guess, east of Pensacola, maybe right at
03:48Pensacola.
03:48So, you're talking, you're talking like the same kind of, what would that be, longitude
03:55as like Chicago, kind of.
03:58Why do we think this thing is going to push so far east to impact us?
04:03Well, that's the best part about it.
04:04I mean, and I say the best part about it.
04:06I mean, that's, you know, you know me when I talk about weather, I talk about great
04:09things with monster storms.
04:11Right.
04:12This is your, these are your playoff games, dude.
04:15You get excited.
04:16Yeah, you're exactly right.
04:17So, this thing, actually, the center of it moves that way.
04:20You're right.
04:20It moves closer to areas like Cincinnati, and then the center moves our way.
04:25But the push of moisture out ahead of it, once this starts to become extratropical, it
04:29just lifts so much moisture out of the Gulf, so much moisture out of the Atlantic, and
04:32then all that just comes our way.
04:34So, that's what we're looking at in our area.
04:36And I am thinking, you know, widespread, anywhere between a half inch and an inch and a half
04:40of rain.
04:40It's not a super big storm for us.
04:42You know, Sunday is just a rainy day.
04:44I'm not expecting a lot of wind.
04:46You know, maybe we see 20, 25 mile an hour winds out there towards North, at Northwest.
04:51So, you know, does that affect the kicking game a little bit?
04:53Maybe.
04:53But I think the biggest issue is going to be the field.
04:57They're going to keep it covered.
04:58Keep it covered.
04:59What's that?
05:00Keep it covered.
05:02Keep the field covered?
05:03Yeah, until later.
05:05Do they cover it?
05:06Yeah, they cover the field.
05:07Oh, yeah, they cover it.
05:08They'll put the tarps on it probably till, I mean, it depends when guys want to get out
05:11there.
05:12All right, when guys start coming out on the field, they'll pull it off.
05:14Yeah.
05:15Oh, I never knew that we covered the field.
05:18Really?
05:19Oh, yeah.
05:19They cover it.
05:20You look back at our, you know, the old field at FedEx and how terrible our field was.
05:27Right.
05:27Just getting, you know, torn up all the time.
05:29So, that's good.
05:30I'm glad they cover it.
05:31Because they're going to need to.
05:32Because it is going to be a lot of rain, especially early.
05:34I mean, the rain now is going to start early Sunday morning.
05:37By early, I'm talking like overnight.
05:38Okay.
05:39Into Sunday morning.
05:40So, we're going to wake up to rain.
05:41It's going to be raining probably all the way through game time.
05:43And then, hopefully, at that time, we just get some shower activity working its way through
05:48here.
05:48And it's not just the heaviest rain.
05:50But I really expect the heaviest to be done by around 1, 2 o'clock.
05:55Okay.
05:55So, right around kickoff.
05:57Right around kickoff.
05:58So, that could be some really good news for, I'll say, for the commanders.
06:02But, of course, for all the fans that we've got going out there.
06:04So, Doug, the worst weather game I remember in a while, outside of just cold, right?
06:09But the then Redskins hosted the Niners back in 2019.
06:16I don't know if you remember that.
06:17It was like, it was probably right.
06:19Yeah.
06:19It was right around this time of year.
06:21It was October.
06:22I guess I just pulled it up.
06:23It was October 20th of 2019.
06:25And there was a legit tropical storm parked on top of Landover.
06:30And it just poured rain the entire time.
06:33And it really did impact that game.
06:36Do you not think this will approach that?
06:40No.
06:40No.
06:41I'm really thinking now the more and more that we see this, this storm is moving a
06:46little bit faster.
06:47So, that means that this rain is most likely going to be mostly done.
06:51It's not going to be done.
06:52You know, we're still going to see rain during the game.
06:54But the heaviest rain should be done by right around game time.
06:59Okay.
06:59So, that means your second half is going to be drier than your first half, most
07:03likely.
07:04Okay.
07:05So, that's going to be, you know, that's going to be something to think about, too.
07:08And then you think about with a wet field, you think about, you know, more of our
07:11running game.
07:12How's our running game look, guys?
07:14Because it has not looked good.
07:15Now, you mentioned Cosby coming back.
07:17That's huge for the running game.
07:19But what have we got?
07:19I mean, you know, one of your guys, JP, that you really liked at the beginning was
07:23Fat Man.
07:23And then they just released him.
07:25You know, Cosby Marion.
07:26I mean, last weekend, he didn't even, how many yards did he have?
07:31Not a lot.
07:32He didn't look good.
07:32He's averaging 2.8 to carry through four games.
07:35Having a guy like Cosby back may be a big help, though.
07:39Agree with that.
07:39Good.
07:40Let's hope.
07:41Let's hope.
07:41Because obviously, we need that.
07:42I mean, we're like dead last in one of those running aspects I saw.
07:50Yeah, the running numbers are kind of tricky because you've got Jaden and you've got Marcus,
07:56two guys that can add yards to the rushing total.
07:59Their totals don't look like, technically, they're ninth in the NFL in rush yards.
08:04But if you break out the quarterback rushing and it's just the backs, the numbers look a
08:09lot different.
08:10Yeah.
08:11So, we'll see.
08:13All right.
08:13So, let me ask you this.
08:15Okay.
08:15Going with that, right?
08:16Going with that.
08:17So, now you've got Jaden with the brace.
08:21And I was worried about McLaurin, of course.
08:23If he's back, that's fantastic.
08:25But do you think we're going to see him throw the ball away a lot more this game just because
08:31he's trying to, A, protect himself, B, maybe he doesn't have the weapons that we need?
08:36Do you think we're going to see a lot more throwaways rather than him trying to run
08:39and do something?
08:40Well, I think the hope, and B, you tell me if you disagree, but the way he played in
08:44the first half against Dallas before he went down with the elbow injury was about as well
08:49as we've seen him play since 23.
08:50I think that's how he's going to play.
08:51And in that, he used his legs when he needed to, but he was sliding and getting out of
08:56bounds.
08:57And he was throwing it away.
08:58He was just playing really under control.
09:01And I would expect to see more of that, frankly.
09:06And I think, listen, I know you say take out the quarterback run.
09:09We have mobile quarterbacks that run the ball.
09:12Sure.
09:12So that's a part of the running game.
09:13You can't take that out.
09:14I mean, I think that helps out your running game.
09:17But I think when fans are like, man, this run game doesn't look good, it's because the
09:21backs.
09:21Like, I just pulled it.
09:22Right.
09:23The total rushing yards for the Commanders is almost 500 yards in four games, 496 yards.
09:29149 of that belongs to Jaden and Marcus.
09:32But those are global running quarterbacks.
09:34Agreed.
09:35Wow.
09:36Doug, real quick while we have you, what are you expecting for the winter?
09:40Last year's winter was the most brutal of my lifetime, and I don't want that again.
09:45And you say most brutal.
09:47We had the snowcrete, and we had snow on the ground.
09:50This was the amazing fact about last year.
09:52It wasn't just about the snowcrete.
09:53It was the fact that it snowed.
09:55We had that snowcrete, and it just stuck around for so long.
09:59We had an inch of snow on the ground at Dulles and DCA for over a month.
10:04I mean, that doesn't happen.
10:05There wasn't new snow.
10:07It was just over a month we had an inch of snow on the ground.
10:10That was a record.
10:10We actually set a record last year because of that, and it was just because of the cold.
10:14And again, just how hard it was to melt that snowcrete.
10:17What do I expect this year?
10:19Well, we're going into a – it's actually a very strong El Nino.
10:23They're calling it super El Nino, all that good stuff.
10:27But I love what that means for us.
10:29Typically, in a strong El Nino, we get above-average snowfall.
10:33However, we have a very – I think we're going to have a pretty warm year all in all, winter.
10:39But I think we're poised to have – we already had the Nor'easter a couple weeks ago, right?
10:43I think we're going to have multiple Nor'easters during the year.
10:47And I don't know if that's going to correlate to snow because, again, you have to get the cold air
10:51in at the same time that you get the snowfall.
10:54But I think this year is going to be very close to 2016.
10:57Now, if you remember 2016, that was the last time we had a blizzard.
11:01So I think we have a good chance this winter of getting a blizzard.
11:06I would love to see 2009, 2010 where we saw three blizzards.
11:11You would. I would not.
11:13See, see, Doug, what I'm hearing is you're looking forward to it.
11:18JP is despising it.
11:20I don't mind a good snow and let the kids play and all that.
11:25Hey, you got a forerunner, don't you?
11:26You're ready for it.
11:27I want it to go away.
11:29Yeah, well, I'll tell you, 2016, that's what happened.
11:32I mean, we had 24 – we had two feet of snow here in the Bethesda area.
11:36And that snow was pretty much gone fairly quickly.
11:40I mean, our roads were back to normal.
11:42Things were good.
11:43You know, it's a lot different than what happened last year where we had eight inches of snow and sleet,
11:47and then it just stuck around forever because the temperatures just didn't warm up.
11:51So this year you would expect to see, you know, some strong – a strong storm come,
11:55maybe give us a lot of snow.
11:57But then behind it, the next week is going to be warming, and we're back into the 40s and 50s.
12:01So, you know, that snow gets out of here.
12:03I mean, everything gets back to normal.
12:04And, you know, you get some of us that keep the snow on the southern sides of the roads
12:11and us on the northern sides where you get more sunshine, that snow's gone.
12:16I remember that snowstorm in 2016.
12:18My daughter was four months old, and we took her outside in her little snowsuit,
12:22and the snow was taller than she was.
12:24It was crazy, man.
12:26I love it.
12:26All right, Doug, we got to run to break.
12:28Thank you for making time for us, dude.
12:29All right, Doug.
12:30All right, thanks, guys.
12:31Talk to you later.
12:31It was a fantastic Friday.
12:33I love it.
12:33The great Doug Cameron sounds like Sunday's game.
12:35You need that nitroglycerin, right?
12:36It made all that snow go away.
12:38Based on it, it made you warm up.
12:39Whatever that was, you started throwing that around your driveway.
12:42Snow is gone.
12:43Coming up at noon, Maryland Governor Wes Moore makes his weekly NFL picks.
