Hey everyone. I am sorry that this took so long, but my critique and analysis of the 2009 Wolfenstein game from Raven Software for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC is finally done. I had @TheShadowLoafKnows look over the script and edit it for me, so big thanks to him for that. I will leave links to his socials down below if you would like to give him a follow. I had a lot more tot say about this game than I thought I might. This is over an hour in length, and it is AFTER I cut three whole pages from the script. It was originally going to be even longer. This game is an overlooked gem that badly needs to make its way back to digital storefronts,. and I hope at least some of you all give it a try. Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoy.

I should note that I was wrong about when the Thule Society was created. They were formed in 1918. Sorry about that.

The song at the end is Killing Spree by Carnage.

00:00:00Hey everyone, it's the Doom Dog. So, Nazis. Do you remember a more innocent time when that word
00:00:12meant something before the word was so overused to describe everyone right of Joseph Stalin
00:00:19to the point where it's completely lost its original meaning and weight?
00:00:25Developers used to be able to put Nazis in their games without having to side-eye it and wonder
00:00:32if it was some poorly thought out political commentary based on a terrible and warped
00:00:38understanding of modern politics. Nazis could just be the bad guys that were up to some weird
00:00:45fucked up shit and nothing more. As it was for the Allied propaganda movies at the time of World War
00:00:53II itself right up to in or around the late 2000s it seems. Today we are going back to that
00:01:03time
00:01:03specifically taking a look at the 2009 Wolfenstein game from Raven Software. Developed for the PlayStation
00:01:113, Xbox 360, and PC, and was one of the last games Raven did before they were banished forever
00:01:19to the Codmines. Having them do nothing but be a support dev for that series is a sad waste of
00:01:28the
00:01:29talents that gave us such excellent games as Star Wars Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast, and Jedi Academy,
00:01:36as well as Hexen, Hexen 2, Heretic, Heretic 2, and Soldier of Fortune. Does Wolfenstein live up to that
00:01:45legacy? Let's find out. Released on August 18, 2009, this would be the last id Software related game to be
00:01:55published by Activision before id Software was purchased by ZeniMax, the Wolfenstein IP being part of that
00:02:04purchase as well. This would also end the longest standing and most fruitful of relationships between
00:02:13id Software and Raven, where Raven would develop many games using id Software engines as well as sequels
00:02:22to id Software games. Raven was a top-tier FPS developer in their own right at the time. Wolfenstein
00:02:292009 was also one of the games to be developed for id Tech 4, the Doom 3 engine, the same
00:02:35engine used for
00:02:36Quake 4, Prey 2006, and enemy territory, Quake Wars. Raven would make a number of improvements to the
00:02:44engine's capabilities such as soft shadows, post-processing effects, depth of field, and adding
00:02:51the Havoc physics engine to it that was so popular at the time. Not much outside of this is broadly
00:02:59known
00:02:59about the development of the game, however, usually discussion of its development boils down to it
00:03:07was marketed poorly and it flopped financially selling 100k copies in the first month after release.
00:03:15There's a number of factors as to why. During the 6th generation and early 7th generation of consoles,
00:03:22we had an onslaught of World War 2 themed games and people were seemingly burnt out on the setting
00:03:28at the time. The game could have used a subtitle to help differentiate it from Wolfenstein 3D and
00:03:34Return to Castle Wolfenstein before it. Just calling it Wolfenstein makes it sound a little uninspired.
00:03:41It also released in a year that was crampacked full of excellent games such as Modern Warfare 2,
00:03:50Uncharted 2, Infamous, Resident Evil 5, and Batman Arkham Asylum. You had to do something special to
00:03:58stand out with competition that stiff. All of these ultimately led to poor sales. Beyond these reasons,
00:04:06you cannot buy the game anymore. After Bethesda acquired the license to the IP and set about
00:04:14making the machine games entries in the series, it was delisted from Steam and other digital platforms.
00:04:21The Xbox 360 port is not backwards compatible with modern hardware. If you want to play it, you have to
00:04:29seek out a used copy of the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or PC, the PC version seemingly having no problem
00:04:38running on modern rigs, thankfully. The game starts off on the Nazi warship, the Tirpitz, off the coast
00:04:46of England. The Nazis in this game speak English with German accent. For the player's sake, one of them
00:04:52is warning another about a spy on board the ship. The man he's speaking to turns out to be BJ
00:04:59Blazkowicz.
00:05:00Wait, why is his hair black? It's never been black before or since. The Nazis wind up attacking him. BJ
00:05:11hides himself
00:05:12behind a metal door while the Nazis hop on a mounted turret to shoot at him. I have to call
00:05:18bullshit on
00:05:19this. It seems to me that the probability of the mounted gun not ripping through the door and killing
00:05:28BJ is rather slim. Anyway, BJ does get caught shortly after that. One of the Nazis asks about what is
00:05:38in his
00:05:38pocket. BJ pulls the object out. They think it's a bomb. They open fire and it lets out a blast
00:05:46of energy
00:05:47of some kind that stops all the bullets and reduces all of them to skeletons. BJ escapes on the plane
00:05:56as things on the boat start to blow up. After this, we see BJ in the OSA office and oh
00:06:03hey,
00:06:04these two guys are from the previous game return to Castle Wolfenstein. That's some nice continuity.
00:06:09They speak to BJ and congratulate him on good work on board the Tirpitz. It is now at the bottom
00:06:18of the
00:06:18ocean. As for the medallion, they have specialists studying the thing. It is an ancient device from a
00:06:27clan of mystics called the Black Sun. The Black Sun is a symbol that is commonly used by the Nazis
00:06:34during
00:06:35World War II, but its origins date back to the Iron Age of Europe. The Nazis were heavily into the
00:06:42occult.
00:06:43They were not Christians, as is often believed. Anyway, this agent group was killed off by some
00:06:49cataclysmic event long ago. The Black Sun symbol in the game was adopted by the Thule Society, which high
00:06:58ranking Nazis in the SS Paranormal Division, featured so prominently in Return to Castle Wolfenstein,
00:07:04are a part of. In real life, the Thule Society were an occult group that operated in Germany in the
00:07:11late
00:07:121800s and early 1900s. They dissolved in 1925, but high ranking members were in contact with high
00:07:21ranking members of the Nazi party. They served as occult advisors, essentially. Enough with the history
00:07:27lessons, let's get back to the game. The medallion contains crystals that can only be mined in one
00:07:33place in the world, a town called Eisenstadt in Germany. There is a resistance group operating in
00:07:39the town called the Kreishaus Circle, who takes its name from a similar group that operated in Germany from
00:07:451940 to 1944. They were in contact with BJ in return to Castle Wolfenstein. Once again, I do appreciate
00:07:55the continuity. If you know this series, you know they carry on into the machine game entries as well,
00:08:02where they started operating in the United States. The Nazi forces occupying Eisenstadt
00:08:09are led by a man named General Zeta. They do not know what is going on there, and that is
00:08:18one thing BJ
00:08:19is going to have to figure out. BJ is to go there, find out what Zeta is doing, and learn
00:08:26more about the
00:08:26medallion. He is to meet up with the Kreishaus Circle, and he is to head there immediately. He is to
00:08:34meet up
00:08:35with a contact from the Kreishaus Circle as soon as he arrives in town. Next, we see BJ arriving in
00:08:42Eisenstadt by train, and his contact from the resistance group is here to meet him. Man tells BJ to
00:08:50follow him, and he leads him to the sewers where BJ drops down. The Nazis are already here waiting for
00:09:00you, so that is certainly odd. If you listen closely, you can hear your contact's ultimate fate. Suffice to
00:09:08say, he did not survive the Nazis encountering him. Make your way through the sewers, and you will find
00:09:14yourself in the back of a bar on the other side. This is the general setup for the story. I
00:09:20would usually
00:09:20go through the plot beat by beat in a summary with me critiquing things here and there, but Shadowloaf,
00:09:28who did some editing on this script for me, suggested that I hit important details and
00:09:34highlights instead. I decided to give that a try. You guys let me know what you think of this approach.
00:09:41If you like it better, I will see about doing more like it in the future. If you think it
00:09:49worse than
00:09:51what I usually do, let me know as well. Here you meet Eric Engel, one of the important characters of
00:09:56this game. He wants your help blowing up a Nazi musician's train that is supposed to arrive here
00:10:04today. Also, the Nazis seem to know that you were here from the start. There might be a mole,
00:10:13and you should probably investigate that. Blowing up the train is this game's first big set piece. It
00:10:22you and all the people around you, as well as a lot of objects that are not bolted down,
00:10:29start to float in the air. This happens periodically as you make your escape from the train station,
00:10:35and it is really cool adding whole other dynamics to the fights on your way out. After exiting the
00:10:44train station, you are led to the Crystyle Circle hideout, and you travel through the hub area for the first
00:10:50time. This is where the semi-open world structure of the game comes into play. You will fight Nazi
00:10:59patrols here, as well as hunt for gold and documents. There are NPCs to talk to, and quests to pick
00:11:07up
00:11:07and travel to, and multiple ways to travel through it, such as the sewers or the rooftops, both of which
00:11:15can help you avoid fights with enemies. There are three groups of NPCs and quest givers that you want to
00:11:22keep in mind. This is the black market is the first of the three that you will visit. This is
00:11:28where you
00:11:29will spend all that Nazi gold that you collect over the course of the game. The Wolfenstein game
00:11:33finally gives you something to do with it all. In exchange for it, they will sell you upgrades for your
00:11:39weapons and powers. Keep it in mind because you will want to return here often with more gold.
00:11:46Here is the second of two groups. This is the Crystyle Circle, the group you were told to link up
00:11:52with in
00:11:53your search for General Zeta in this town. Their leader is a woman named Caroline Becker. If you play
00:12:00the Machine Games entries, you should recognize that name. She is an important character in those games,
00:12:05where she is the leader of the Crystyle Circle as well. Here is what she looks like in the two
00:12:12games.
00:12:13But that's a different girl. Yeah, she looks like a completely different character. And it is really strange.
00:12:21Anyway, Caroline was a school teacher. When the war started, General Zeta declared martial law for Eisenstad,
00:12:29and her father was gunned down in the streets. This is what inspired her to fight back and led her
00:12:35to
00:12:35become the leader of the Crystyle Circle. She is determined to free the town from Nazi rule.
00:12:41When Erik introduces you to her, she thanks you for the good work at the train station. But you
00:12:47need to do more than just that to gain her trust. She tells you about an archaeological dig outside of
00:12:56town
00:12:56where Zeta was spotted. She suggests you look for him there. She says that it's a suicide mission,
00:13:05though, and that there is a mole in the group that needs to be rooted out. When you arrive at
00:13:12the dig
00:13:12site, you find a prisoner here. A Russian named Sergei Kovlov. He is a member of a group of scholars
00:13:19that studies the occult named the Golden Dawn. We will get into them, but the Nazis captured and tortured
00:13:26him for information. He told them about an ancient artifact that he was sent here to retrieve.
00:13:33You need to get that artifact before the Nazis do venture further into the dig site. The artifact
00:13:39turns out to be a medallion. Sergei shows up and explains it to you. It allows BJ to enter the
00:13:45veil,
00:13:45a buffer between our dimension and the Black Sun dimension. In the veil, you move faster and you can see
00:13:52secret passages that are not there in our dimension. It is extremely useful and it only becomes more useful
00:14:01as you get new abilities. The veil drains as you use it, but there are places to power it back
00:14:10up spread
00:14:11out throughout the world. Be on the lookout for them. There are also creatures in the veil called Geist.
00:14:17They are harmless normally, but they can attack when they feel threatened. Finally, enemies are highlighted
00:14:25in green. It makes them easier to spot. Deeper into the ruins, you will find an old portal of some
00:14:32kind.
00:14:32It kind of resembles a Stargate. Keep this in mind for the future, but BJ decides to destroy it.
00:14:40How ethical do you think it is to destroy an ancient artifact like this?
00:14:45Now how ethical is it to keep it from falling into the hands of Nazis?
00:14:49You had to think about that one for a bit, didn't you? After you leave the ruins,
00:14:53you can spend a little time exploring and you are likely to come across your first side quest.
00:14:58This Chrysal Circle member was sent here to retrieve a code book from a nearby warehouse,
00:15:04but he was injured in his attempt to do so. He asks you to do it for him. This quest
00:15:10is pretty
00:15:10simple and straightforward without much story except for the Nazi officer that has the code book.
00:15:18Knowing that you are here and retreating to his house, keep an eye out for other such side quests
00:15:23after this one. The Golden Dawn sends you off to a church where you see the Nazis are making some
00:15:30kind
00:15:30of sky beam well before that became a meme. Inside the church you find a device that takes away your
00:15:37ability to use Veil powers. There are a bunch of these spread throughout the game, so be on the
00:15:44lookout for them and destroy them when you see them. BJ also finds a machine powered by energy from the
00:15:52Black Sun dimension here. Oh hey look, it's the guy from the cover of the game. Destroy the machine and
00:15:59head
00:16:00back to town. Head to the Golden Dawn hideout in town. This is a group of scholars that are here
00:16:05to
00:16:05investigate what the Nazis are doing with regards to the Veil and the Black Sun dimension. They are led
00:16:12by a man named Leonid Alexandrov played by the late great Tom Kane. May he rest in peace. They have
00:16:22a
00:16:22mission for you. Two of their agents went to a farmhouse to investigate what the Nazis were doing
00:16:29there and they have not come back. You are charged with finding them and saving them if you can. They
00:16:36first send you to a local pub called the Raven's Nest and I have to be honest this entire sequence
00:16:42feels like it could have been cut from the game entirely. The only important thing that happens
00:16:48here is that the game introduces Hans Gross who was the final boss of the first act of Wolfenstein 3D.
00:16:56He was the man carrying the dual mini guns. I cannot help but feel that there had to be a
00:17:02way to
00:17:03introduce him into the game in a way that does not feel so pointless. The farmhouse itself is one of
00:17:10the
00:17:10best sections of the game. It starts with a simple fight through farm fields, barns and a house that
00:17:17ultimately leads to underground tunnels that give way to underground labs. Here you will find the Golden
00:17:25Dawn members you are looking for being held prisoner by the Nazis. The Nazis are experimenting on crystals
00:17:33called not some crystals. They can only be mined in Eisenstadt and they are used to power the black
00:17:41sun artifacts the Nazis are trying to create artificial crystals and they have creatures called sniffers
00:17:50that the scientists are afraid of that are used to sniff out the most powerful of these crystals. This
00:17:57lets the Nazis refine the process of making artificial crystals allowing more and more powerful fake
00:18:03ones as they work. This area is packed with great environmental storytelling and it culminates in
00:18:09one of the best set pieces in the game as you blow up the labs and have to escape while
00:18:16using a mounted
00:18:17turret to gun down the sniffers that also broke free from their cages and can and will attack you
00:18:25while they escape as well. It's fucking great and an absolute highlight for this game. Next up is the
00:18:33hospital. The receptionist is killed by an invisible assassin right in front of BJ. The opening of this level
00:18:40is great as BJ is stalked by the invisible assassin. He is fast and hard to hit. He is hard
00:18:48to spot as well
00:18:49until he is right in your face ready to attack. Until you are finally able to fight back and kill
00:18:57the first
00:18:57one. This plays out like a horror game and it's effective and memorable. The Nazis have a portal
00:19:03beneath it. A doctor and a soldier are talking besides it. The doctor says that everyone that has entered the
00:19:09portal has come back out a monster or has died. Two of them spot BJ and the soldier
00:19:16pushes the doctor into the portal. He comes back out as a monster and kills the doctor.
00:19:23See, as you can see, the more you fuck around, the more you're going to find out.
00:19:29Killing this monster is the game's first boss fight. After the fight, the portal sucks BJ up into
00:19:35the Black Sun dimension. This is your first real glimpse at it. And you should count your lucky stars.
00:19:41Unlike everyone else that has injured it, you do not come back as a monster. BJ wakes up in the
00:19:47hospital
00:19:47floor sometime later and he has to fight his way back out of the hospital. Make your way back to
00:19:54the
00:19:54streets of Eisenstadt. You learn that the broken parts of the portal you destroyed at the dig site
00:20:00have been shipped to a cannery to be rebuilt. Zeta issued a shoot on site order. It is safe to
00:20:08say
00:20:08that he is pissed. In one of the levels you may come across a guise that appears to have been
00:20:14captured by the Nazis. It seems to be dead and it was doubtless experimented on. You never really
00:20:20see these things outside of the veil so you have to wonder how this thing got here from the veil
00:20:27and
00:20:28what cruel experiments it was subjected to. The game doesn't really give you an answer, but it is a neat
00:20:34piece of environmental storytelling. The plot is good at that. BJ finally comes face to face with
00:20:41General Zeta. It is about time he showed up. We keep hearing about him, but this is the first time
00:20:45we see him. BJ tries to shoot him, but the bullets go right through him. Zeta says you cannot see
00:20:53what
00:20:53is right in front of you and the next boss fight begins. Zeta is not a human. He is some
00:21:00sort of Black
00:21:00Sun creature. Perhaps he is how the Nazis found out about the Black Sun in the first place. Either way,
00:21:08take him down and make your escape as the building around you explodes. When you escape the building,
00:21:15you find that fighting in the streets has increased dramatically. The Nazis are retaliating for the
00:21:23death of Zeta. Caroline gives you instructions on how to get to a new hideout and tells you to meet
00:21:29her there. Here, the game shifts to a different part of the town for the remainder of it. At this
00:21:36new location, you discover that Caroline has been kidnapped and Leonid says that the Golden Dawn no
00:21:41longer require BJ's services. I guess you'll only be doing missions for the Chrysal Circle from here on out.
00:21:48The Chrysal Circle is planning a raid on a castle where Becker is being held to rescue her, so join
00:21:56them. It is worth noting that this is not Castle Wolfenstein. It is just a castle in Eisenstadt.
00:22:04That specific castle does not appear in this game. BJ comes face to face with his old nemesis,
00:22:11Death's Head. He was the villain in Return to Castle Wolfenstein and he is back in this game. He is
00:22:18also in the next game, The New Order as well. Here's what he looks like in this game compared to
00:22:24that
00:22:25one. But that's a different guy. Yeah, he pretty much looks like an entirely different character in
00:22:30this game than he does in the next one. It's weird. Anyway, Death's Head heard BJ was here and he
00:22:37came to
00:22:37get revenge for the events of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Again, I must commend the continuity
00:22:42between the games. I appreciate it. Hans Gross is here holding Caroline captive. BJ drops his gun. The
00:22:51Nazis are harvesting power for the Black Sun dimension to power their army to make them unstoppable and take
00:22:59over the world. Something goes wrong with the machine. Caroline breaks free from Hans and punches him
00:23:06in the face. She gets shot and killed. A giant monster comes through the portal. Hans and Death's Head
00:23:14escape. The creature is your next boss fight. After the fight, the game takes note that Caroline is
00:23:22definitely dead. I gotta go take my brain medicine so I can understand the Wolfenstein franchise. At the
00:23:30black market, you learn that one of the brothers, Anton, is dead. He apparently told the Nazis of BJ's arrival
00:23:42which begs the question, how did he know? Keep this in mind, I will come back to it. He also
00:23:50set up
00:23:51Caroline's capture that led to her death. So his brother shot him for this. I guess at least one of
00:23:57them has some sense of right and wrong after previously insisting that they are happy to sell
00:24:03weapons to both sides of the war. Death's Head has moved to the Zeppelin floating above the town
00:24:10throughout the game. He is planning on firing some sort of Black Sun weapon from above the town. BJ needs
00:24:18to fight his way through the Nazi airfield to reach the Zeppelin in order to confront him and stop
00:24:24the Nazis once and for all. His plan to get to the airship leads to a pretty humorous exchange that
00:24:31I quite like. Listen. This is insane. If you didn't think this would work, you should have said something earlier.
00:24:41I did.
00:24:48BJ sees Death's Head and Hans talking to Alexandrov. Alexandrov says he told the Nazis where to find
00:24:56Caroline leading to her capture and that you would be arriving at the train station both. He has been
00:25:03working with them the whole time. Wait, one of the Black Market brothers said much the same about his
00:25:08brother. So which is it game? Maybe they both informed the Nazis about Caroline and your arrival?
00:25:15I do not know. It seems to be an oversight in the story. Anyway, Alexandrov has been using the Golden
00:25:23Dawn to translate ancient little manuscripts and use them to feed their findings back to the Nazis.
00:25:30And he says they do not suspect anything because they have been so focused on what BJ is doing to
00:25:36ask questions. He wants to pass into the Black Sun dimension and he says that he has been ridiculed his
00:25:44whole life about his research. I suppose that is why he is working with the Nazis? Because they were taking
00:25:51him more seriously? This also explains why he never liked BJ. None of it works out for him as Hans
00:25:58shoots him and him and Death's Head move away saying the weapon will be firing soon. Enter the portal to
00:26:06the Black Sun dimension. BJ arrives at some sort of machine. Is this the weapon? Apparently it destroyed
00:26:13the Thule Society but Death's Head is certain that he will be able to control it. He wants to use
00:26:19it to
00:26:19destroy Eisenstadt and then conquer the rest of the world. He does not say what it actually does though.
00:26:28He orders Hans to kill you and Hans is the final boss fight. After the fight, the Zeppelin crashes.
00:26:34BJ takes a parachute and jumps off. He floats down to safety as the Zeppelin crashes behind him. The
00:26:43medallion starts to dissolve and he throws it away. I guess no one can get to the Black Sun dimension
00:26:48now?
00:26:49I do not know. But there is a post credit scene where Death's Head climbs from the rubble. He is
00:26:56still
00:26:56alive and he is pissed. The story is one of the wilder stories in the franchise diving deep into the
00:27:02occult just like the previous game did. So it's about what you expect from a sequel. This might be the
00:27:09wildest and most out there game in the series in that regard. I suppose it is par for the course
00:27:18but
00:27:18no one really played Return to Castle Wolfenstein for its story necessarily. Though 2009 did have a
00:27:27bigger emphasis on it than both Wolfenstein 3D and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. It was the next
00:27:33entry in the series that became well known for its storytelling though. There is certainly a lot
00:27:38that I like here. There are some really badass cutscenes spread throughout the game and I like how
00:27:44it puts a bigger emphasis on storytelling. The German accent is certainly still over the top in this
00:27:51game but is an improvement over Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I do think the Nazi soldier voices are
00:27:57better than the resistance though. Still it showed that Raven took the story of this game more seriously
00:28:06which I appreciate. The game also does a lot more to immerse you in its world. While it has plenty
00:28:14of
00:28:14cutscenes it also does a lot in game and provides a lot of information this way. It is reminiscent of
00:28:21the
00:28:21Half-Life method. Having you in first person interacting with NPCs who are talking to you in real time.
00:28:30It goes a long way to making the world feel more real. I personally find the alternate dimension stuff
00:28:37and the Veil and the Thule society in particular interesting. Maybe it will not be that way to others
00:28:43but the ancient society type stuff really grabs my attention and makes me want to know more. It certainly
00:28:50kept my attention throughout. One of the things that this game does that really stands out is the
00:28:56environmental storytelling. Take your time to look around you while you play to see how cool some of
00:29:05the levels and set pieces and art design really is. You will see where the Nazis are growing crystals
00:29:13with all kinds of high-tech sci-fi machinery that leaves you wondering what it all does. This game
00:29:21does a lot of show don't tell within its environments. And it's all so fucking cool. I particularly love
00:29:30both the farm and hospital levels in this regard but there's plenty of cool stuff in the other levels as
00:29:36well. Finally, you collect intel. Some of it is just Nazis writing about things they do in their day-to
00:29:44-day
00:29:44lives like letters between lovers while others are orders from command that really help flesh out the
00:29:51story and give you details that you might have missed. Those are worth searching for and collecting.
00:29:59This game does it right. You do not need them to have a general idea of what is going on,
00:30:06but they deepen your understanding of the world and learn more aspects of the stories you find them.
00:30:12It is not all sunshine and roses though this game's biggest flaw is its characters. Very unmemorable.
00:30:20Zeta shows up one single time, you kill him and that's it. All of his build up is just for
00:30:28one boss fight.
00:30:29He does a decent job chewing the scenery but that does not endure himself
00:30:34to the player at all. Forgettable. Same can be said about characters like Eric,
00:30:41Angle, and Stefan. If I didn't write their names down for this review, I would have forgotten about
00:30:46them as soon as I turned the game off. If Caroline didn't play a part in the new order,
00:30:52I would have completely forgot about her as well. While the story itself is interesting,
00:30:57the characters and character writing does let it down somewhat. The plot and world building are the
00:31:05main draws here. The dialogue is also subpar. Where are the memorable lines?
00:31:11The only ones that stand out are the ones that are references, like here where Hans Gross says
00:31:19Guten Tag, or when the Nazis say Mein Leben, like they scream in the original Wolfenstein 3D.
00:31:25Outside of that, the dialogue is meh. None of it sticks with you after you have beaten it.
00:31:34While I wouldn't say this game story is bad necessarily, aspects of it are rather interesting,
00:31:40as mentioned previously, but I wouldn't call it particularly good either. There are plenty of
00:31:47awesome set pieces and lots of wonderful story rich environments that are plenty memorable,
00:31:54but ultimately serviceable with nothing special. However, it was about what I expected from Wolfenstein
00:32:02at the time. I cannot say I was necessarily disappointed. While the story wasn't really the
00:32:09main draw of Wolfenstein back then, the increased focus on it is appreciated regardless,
00:32:15but the rest of the game is where it really shines. How does it look? As previously mentioned,
00:32:25this game runs on id tech 4, heavily enhanced by Raven. The Havoc physics engine was added to get
00:32:33those sweet ragdolls and other cool physics on objects in the environment. They added depth of field,
00:32:41soft shadows and post-processing effects, creating something quite a bit more advanced than Doom 3
00:32:48on a technical front. Tell me again why Bethesda allegedly said this engine wasn't good enough
00:32:54for the sequel to Prey? If you played Doom 3 and Quake 4 beforehand, you probably noticed right off the
00:33:02bat that this game puts far less emphasis on the lighting. The lighting and shadows here are nice and the
00:33:11soft shadows
00:33:13added do result in more realistic shadows than the artistic designs presented in the games where those were
00:33:22focused on showing those off. This game focuses more on realistic environments. The lighting is quite good,
00:33:30but of course, it is still id tech 4. That was the engine's biggest innovation. It just uses them
00:33:37very differently than the other games utilizing the same engine. The game seems to have rounder edges,
00:33:46and a general higher level of detail in pretty much everything in its environment than Doom 3 and
00:33:51Quake 4 as well. Raven's previous experience with the game engine and developing Quake 4 really shows.
00:33:59The environments are downright gorgeous at times, and pretty good looking the rest of the time.
00:34:06For a game that is now 17 years old, as well as the time of writing this, this game is
00:34:15still a looker,
00:34:16especially on PC, where you can run it at higher resolutions with higher graphical settings in
00:34:21the console version. Beyond that, the art design of this game is downright inspired and amazing.
00:34:29Raven has done a great job making the spaces you visit look believable. Large garage workspaces look
00:34:37like you would imagine. You can see them being real places, and the town itself is pretty well laid out.
00:34:46It is not particularly large, certainly smaller than a real life town would be, but that's fine. It's more
00:34:53convenient for the player that way. It is still big enough and open enough to sell you on it.
00:34:59The other environment type that stands out the most to me are the ruins of the Ghoul Society. You will
00:35:06see
00:35:06a lot of cool crumbled structures that were ancient temples and whatnot in places like the Dick site
00:35:12and the Black Sun dimension itself. It tells you that there is a whole history to it hidden away by
00:35:19time.
00:35:20It's a really nice touch that does a very good job leaving you wanting more. Good work, Raven. The world
00:35:29you
00:35:30created for this game is one of its biggest highlights. The game uses a lot of special effects as well.
00:35:38Entering and exiting the veil looks really cool and the enemies glow in it as well as the liquid that
00:35:47restores your veil powers are really cool as well. The bullets impacting shields is a wonderful little touch.
00:35:56The Tesla cannon is awesome looking when you fire it and the gravity warping effects when the Black Sun
00:36:04energy explosions occur is downright awesome. I sure wish it played nicer with my recording software
00:36:10because it really is quite impressive. There are some drawbacks to the game's graphics. However,
00:36:17first off, there is no in-game FOV slider. You can edit an INI to increase the FOV,
00:36:24but the standard is about 80 degrees at best. You can increase this by opening the config file and
00:36:31entering a new FOV in that. But that does come with some major drawbacks. It is designed for a set
00:36:39FOV
00:36:40and full screen effects like condensation or smoke covering the screen will be in a box in the middle
00:36:48of the screen instead of taking up the whole screen. It is up to you if you want to deal
00:36:54with that or
00:36:54not. I do not know of any way to increase the FOV that avoids this. Beyond this, the character models
00:37:02do not hold up as well as the environments. Objects and other models do. This is pretty typical of older
00:37:09games to be honest. It is not that surprising. The models do not look bad necessarily, but rendering
00:37:16characters has come a long way since this game. When you are going for a realistic look for the
00:37:21characters, they cannot be held up by wonderful things like art design nearly as well. To be fair,
00:37:29they fit into the environments pretty well. Such a minor complaint really, but they definitely are
00:37:34not as nice as they used to be. This applies to their movement and animations as well. It is not
00:37:42bad at
00:37:42all. It is just decidedly 7th gen. All in all, this is a great looking game. By 2009 standards,
00:37:49this game looked quite good and it holds up pretty well to this day. Wonderful art design really helps
00:37:55this game stand the test of time for certain. And this game still looks pretty good even by modern
00:38:02standards. If this was to get a good quality remaster with touch-ups of the models and texture work,
00:38:10it would look practically modern. Should that ever happen, I just ask that the FOV issue gets fixed.
00:38:19This game is gorgeous and there is very little to complain about graphically. How does it sound then?
00:38:25This game sounds fucking incredible. I am shocked that this does not get more discussion on how good it
00:38:33sounds sounds because it damn well should. It is no slouch in any aspect. Raven Software did an
00:38:41absolutely incredible job with this game's sound design and I would be hard pressed to come up with
00:38:47any complaints about any aspect of this game's audio design. This is a prime example of why I want a
00:38:54good
00:38:54audio setup for my games, movies, and music. Let's start with the weapons. When you fire these,
00:39:01they sound powerful as hell. Every real-life World War II-era weapon in this game has a strong punch
00:39:10to
00:39:10the audio and it uses bass for an even stronger emphasis on it. If you have a subwoofer, you are
00:39:18going to feel that when you fire the weapons. It gives those a good workout and it helps you feel
00:39:27every shot you take. This is some of the best weapon audio outside of fear. It is genuinely that good.
00:39:35The game also has a number of science fiction weapons that you can play with and the sound is wonderful
00:39:44as well. The Tesla Cannon zaps enemies with electricity and it really sounds like it hurts a hell of a
00:39:53lot.
00:39:53The particle cannon fires a beam of Veil energy that vaporizes enemies and it sounds like an
00:40:02absolutely terrible way to die when you point and shoot at enemies. It is glorious. Then there is the
00:40:09Lycan Faust 44. I probably butchered that pronunciation but it fires explosive blasts of Black Sun energy
00:40:19gravity that come with gravity warping effect. It sounds incredible as well. You will hear a lot of
00:40:24explosions throughout this game as well as you would expect. The game does take place during wartime in
00:40:30a town where the Nazi party and a resistance group are wrestling for control. You can make your own
00:40:38explosions too with rocket launchers or grenades. They sound great as well with big basic booms that rock your
00:40:46living room headphones or whatever you happen to be playing it. There is real power to them as there
00:40:53should be. It's awesome. Another thing that I love about the audio specifically is the Veil powers. The
00:41:00sound of bullets colliding with shields is a real standout. The thunk sound they make is really damn cool.
00:41:09By this point there was a precedent set for how slow motion sound and this game nails it as well.
00:41:19Raven did
00:41:21not reinvent the wheel with that but they did not need to the classic distorted slowed audio. The added effect
00:41:30for when you use empower that makes your bullets stronger is quite nice as well. And the general ambience
00:41:38of being in the Veil is quite nice as well. As you are traveling through the different areas of the
00:41:44game you
00:41:44will hear appropriate noises to those areas. There will be fighting in the streets. You will hear allies
00:41:51and enemies talking to each other. The gentle flow of the liquid anytime you are near a source of Veil
00:41:59energy
00:41:59or flowing water and little noises like the Geists make it all sound believable and appropriate. Raven did a great
00:42:07job with the environmental audio in this game as well. How was the voice cast? Let's start with Tom
00:42:14Kane. May he rest in peace. He plays the leader of the Golden Dawn Dr. Leonid Alexandrov and he is
00:42:21quite
00:42:21good here. He's quite an accomplished voice actor by this point and it is hard to imagine him being bad
00:42:31in any
00:42:31role. Likewise the late great Jim Ward known for bringing Captain Quark from Ratchet and Clank to life plays a
00:42:40variety of
00:42:41SS officers in this game and he does a great job putting on a German accent than anything in Return
00:42:49to
00:42:49Castle Wolfenstein and any of the resistance members in my opinion. Another standout performance is Robin Atkins Downs as
00:42:58Death's Head. Among many roles he played the Prophet of Regret in Halo 2 and Halo Wars which I have
00:43:06done
00:43:06a video on previously as well as Master Miller in the Metal Gear Solid games. He'd choose the scenery big
00:43:14time here as Death's Head and the villain is better for it. He is probably my favorite performance in this
00:43:20entire game because of how over the top he plays Death's Head. It works great for the outright evil bastard
00:43:27that he is. BJ is voiced in this game though he certainly talks less than he does in New Order.
00:43:35Here he is played by Peter Jessup. If you are familiar with BJ in that game but have not played
00:43:42this one
00:43:43you will find the performance here is much more straightforward and a more typical hero archetype.
00:43:49Don't see that as a bad thing though. Jessup does well with the material that he is given.
00:43:54It is just a different take on the character. The more doubt and trodden and regretful take on BJ in
00:44:01the
00:44:01New Order would not work for BJ in this game. BJ is much more of an all-American hero here
00:44:09and it works
00:44:11great for the story that it is telling. All in all there are some great voice actors in this game
00:44:19and
00:44:19they all turn in great performances. The only real complaint I could lodge against it is the German
00:44:24accents here can be a little over the top at times. Then again the story is as well. It's weird
00:44:31though
00:44:31that there seems to be a sharp divide between how the resistance sounds in this regard and how the
00:44:38Nazi soldiers sound. The German accents to my ears at least are better on the Nazis than the resistance
00:44:46group. Maybe that was on purpose. I do not know that still the performances are good and they did the
00:44:54best with the material that they were given. Finally we arrive at the score. This is not one of the
00:45:01top
00:45:02scores for first person shooters that I have ever heard. It does not sit up there with Bobby Prince's
00:45:08classic work on Doom or Marty O'Donnell's work on Halo. But it is not bad either. The music never gets
00:45:16in the way of the action. It only enhances it. It ramps up when things are getting heated and balls
00:45:23are
00:45:23flying. It definitely has a memorable tune or two here or there. It's not something I would necessarily go out
00:45:31and collect on vinyl. One thing this game does well with its music is combine with the level design,
00:45:39art direction, and lighting to set a mood and atmosphere. When you are being stalked and taunted
00:45:46by an invisible assassin in the hospital it gets a little spooky. When you find ancient ruins it gets
00:45:54a little mysterious and when you are traveling through the high-tech Nazi labs it gets a little sci-fi.
00:46:01This is really what the music does best. It sets an appropriate mood for whatever the situation
00:46:08you find yourself in. Even if you do not come away humming the tunes you will go oh yeah I
00:46:15remember that
00:46:16when you hear them in the game. It's good work. All in all there are no weak spots to this
00:46:21game's
00:46:21audio design at all. It has high watermarks across the board and sound department. Wolfenstein 2009 is an
00:46:29amazing sounding game and I am kind of shocked that I have heard so little about it in regards to
00:46:34that in the 17 years since its release. This game sounds great and it has not lost anything in that
00:46:41regard since its release. Get yourself a good pair of headphones or set yourself up a great receiver
00:46:48for audio preferably with a subwoofer and enjoy. The game will reward you for it. How does it play then?
00:46:56When you first boot up this game and start to play it, it would be easy to dismiss this as
00:47:01nothing more
00:47:02than Wolfenstein imitating Call of Duty. I know at least a few people were guilty of this back in
00:47:08the day. It has a slower movement speed and regenerating health that COD is known for. I have
00:47:30to push past that. The opening level to this game isn't even bad at all. Honestly, it is a pretty
00:47:36good
00:47:37opening that sees you getting your first two weapons, an MP40 and a car 98, fighting your way through a
00:47:44train station and blowing up a train. It ends up in a really cool set piece where the gravity is
00:47:50going
00:47:50nuts, causing Nazis and everything else to float up in the air, BJ included. It's great and it does give
00:47:59you a small taste of what's to come. When you accept that there is a bit of Call of Duty
00:48:03influence in
00:48:04this game, it gets off to a strong start. The levels just get better from there as you acquire weapons
00:48:12and powers and it culminates in the farm and hospital levels, at least in my opinion. Those are my two
00:48:19favorite areas of this game. The farm does a great job diverting your expectations. You go there expecting
00:48:26maybe the Nazis are holding the Golden Dawn members hostage there, but you find so much more as you
00:48:34deeper venture into it. There are multi-layered shootouts. It introduces the sniffer enemies. You
00:48:40see them beneath you before you fight them and it shows you that the Nazi operations are much deeper
00:48:50than you have initially thought. It's great. Then there is the hospital level. The opening of this
00:48:57has you seeing a nurse at the front desk get slaughtered by an invisible assassin that you
00:49:04just get a glimpse of and it has BJ exploring the hospital interior while the thing taunts you the entire
00:49:12time. Raven knew just how long to let it stalk you in the halls before it comes down and attacks
00:49:18you
00:49:18for the first time and you have to try to fend it off. Beneath the hospital you find a new
00:49:25weapon to
00:49:26deal with the assassin and the rebuilt portal from the dig site and the game's first boss fight. It is
00:49:35so
00:49:35well done and so atmospheric. When I say that these two are the best highlights, I do not mean that
00:49:42the
00:49:42rest of the game is bad because it definitely isn't. This game has a tendency to throw new areas and
00:49:50environments at you right up to the final moments. It always has you seeing something new as you travel
00:49:57through the different locations. Despite the vast majority of enemies being human beings, it does a
00:50:04good job mixing them up as well. Some are melee, some use machine guns, there are enemies that have
00:50:12flamethrowers and there are enemies with sci-fi weaponry as well and they are all a blast to fight.
00:50:19The enemy AI is nothing special like it is in fear but they are competent. They will generally shout out
00:50:28warnings when you throw grenades and at least try to avoid them. They will duck and try to remain out
00:50:35of
00:50:36sight while firing back at you. They will try to dodge your attacks and they will toss grenades your
00:50:44way. Enemies do a decent job fighting back and it keeps fights engaging from beginning to end. The gun
00:50:52fights in this game are up to Raven's highest standard of quality. There is one specific enemy type in this
00:50:58game that gets on my nerves though and it is the rocket trooper. These guys fly in on jet packs
00:51:04and
00:51:05they fire rockets down at you from above. They probably kill me more than any other enemy type in
00:51:09this game despite being introduced late in the game. They have a tendency to dodge out of the way
00:51:16of your fire the moment you aim at them and it makes them a pain in the ass to hit
00:51:22at times. Even with slow-mo
00:51:24activated they can be hard to hit and they hit you hard as you would expect. They are easily the
00:51:32least
00:51:33enjoyable enemy to fight in this game. The boss fights are pretty cool in this game. This does not
00:51:39just go the route of shoot it until it dies type of fights. They are a bit more complex than
00:51:45that and
00:51:46they take a little bit more brain power for you to figure out how to take them down. This makes
00:51:51them
00:51:52more fun to fight. The bosses stand out more as a result. The only one that I struggled a hell
00:52:00of a
00:52:01lot with was the chick that you fight on the way to the Zeppelin. With that one it was not
00:52:07figuring
00:52:07out how to win. It was just the game throws so much shit at you that it's a little overwhelming.
00:52:14There
00:52:14are a few sections of this game where you take control of a mounted turrets and either fight off waves
00:52:21of enemies or in one case fend off a boss. These do not control all that great especially during the
00:52:29boss
00:52:29fight trying to destroy the antenna tower. The thing turns so sluggish and slow that you will die because
00:52:39you could not turn to aim at incoming enemies fast enough and there is nothing that you can do about
00:52:46it. It's not fun. It is frustrating and it feels like these are cheap deaths that are entirely the game's
00:52:54fault
00:52:55because they just do not give you proper tools to deal with what you are shooting at. Having said that
00:53:04there
00:53:04is one turret section where you are escaping the farm that is absolutely excellent. This is one of the game's
00:53:11really cool set pieces. It has you take hold of a turret as the
00:53:16train you are on speeds away from the underground complex beneath the farm. Everything is blowing up around
00:53:24you and tons of sniffers are crawling out all over the walls and ground trying to escape as well. You
00:53:32will be shooting them and the explosive barrels as you speed away. It's exhilarating. It is the best mounted
00:53:42turret section in the game by far. A first person shooter lives and dies by its guns and Wolfenstein
00:53:492009 has an excellent selection of weapons for you to choose from. The first gun that you will be given
00:53:55is classic MP40. It will become your old reliable as ammo for it is plentiful and it does a great
00:54:03job
00:54:04taking down Nazis. It feels great to fire and it is a blast using it. You will be pulling it
00:54:10out a lot
00:54:11throughout the game and it is always a good choice. You will not make it out of the train station
00:54:16before
00:54:16you get your second weapon. This is the car 98. It is a bolt action rifle and you will want
00:54:21to use it
00:54:22for more precise aiming than the MP40. It has a smaller clip and a much slower rate of fire but
00:54:29it is great
00:54:30for popping off headshots at a longer range. It will eventually wind up effectively being your sniper rifle
00:54:38and it proves to be great and quite effective at it. You will pick up an MP43 as well and
00:54:46it basically
00:54:47serves as the same purpose as the MP40. It's another submachine gun. It fires fast, it packs a punch,
00:54:55it is great for short and medium range just like the MP40 which one you switch to will largely depend
00:55:03upon your current ammo pool. Honestly I don't know why Raven would not give you a pistol or revolver
00:55:09instead of the two weapons that fill the same role. BJ uses a pistol in the opening scene and Hans
00:55:17holds Caroline hostage with one as well but you never get to use one in game. Continuing with the real
00:55:26world
00:55:27weapons you will find a flamethrower as well. Flamethrowers seem to be hard to get right in video games if
00:55:36how
00:55:36often they are done wrong is any indication but this one seems to get it very right. If you want
00:55:46to send
00:55:46those Nazis to a horrible agonizing death pull this thing out. Ammo for it is a bit limited but it
00:55:58is so
00:55:58much fun to use. Enemies will scream in pain before they die and it is great. Good job Raven. You
00:56:06get the
00:56:07Panzer check for your rocket launcher. If you have played pretty much any World War 2 game you have
00:56:14probably taken out tanks with this thing. Well there are no tanks for you to take out with it but
00:56:20it
00:56:20does pack quite a wallop as any great rocket launcher should. I did not use this one much but it
00:56:29is great
00:56:30for taking out groups of enemies in one single shot. It feels appropriately powerful to use. It is a lot
00:56:39of
00:56:39fun to fire. Finally you get to toss grenades at enemies as well. These work exactly as you would
00:56:45expect. You toss it, it explodes, it damages or kills any poor son of a bitch caught up in the
00:56:52explosion.
00:56:53Enemies will try to dodge out of the way when you throw it and they have grenades too. They will
00:57:01toss them
00:57:02your way so look out for the indicator letting you know when one is nearby. You can use these to
00:57:09disperse
00:57:10crowds or kill crowds depending upon how things go and they are fun. Beyond these real world weapons
00:57:18this game has some really fun science fiction guns. One of the first ones that you will get is the
00:57:25particle cannon and this thing is fucking awesome. It fires a stream of black sun energy that does high
00:57:34damage and will turn enemies into nothing very quickly. When you get one of these things and use it on
00:57:42enemies for the first time you are bound to fall in love with it. It's flat out fucking awesome. The
00:57:50next up
00:57:50is the tesla cannon. This thing fires bolts of electricity at enemies. It does not work the same
00:57:58as the lightning gun in quake where it fires a straight stream of electricity. It is a little
00:58:04more unpredictable than that as it can fire in multiple directions depending upon where the enemy
00:58:09is in relation to you. It can hit multiple targets at a time as well. Use this to zap the
00:58:15ever loving
00:58:15shit out of any Nazi scum that dares to get in your way. It is so much fucking fun. The
00:58:22last weapon is
00:58:23the Leichen Faust 44. It is effectively a rocket launcher that fires bursts of energy from the black
00:58:31sun dimension. It explodes on contact. It does splash damage and it causes the gravity warping effect as
00:58:38well. It is very fucking powerful and it sends enemies ragdolling and floating back down. Save this
00:58:47one for tight spots but enjoy it when you have ammo for it. It is awesome and very fun to
00:58:53use. All in all
00:58:54every single weapon in this game is a hell of a lot of fun to use and it makes the
00:58:58gunplay all that much
00:59:00better. There are no duds here even if the MP40 and MP43 fill the same basic role in the arsenal.
00:59:08You
00:59:09expect good gunplay from classic Raven games and this game delivers it in spades. Shootouts with enemies
00:59:15are fun from start to finish partially because the roster of weapons is top tier. Man I miss Old Raven
00:59:23so
00:59:24much. If that was all there was to this game that would probably be enough to be a great shooter
00:59:31but
00:59:32that's not all. This game has a device called the Thule Medallion that is central to both the plot and
00:59:37the
00:59:37gameplay. When you use it you enter a buffer realm between our world and the black sun dimension called
00:59:45the Veil. Enemies are highlighted and they can still see you but your movement speed is increased.
00:59:53You can also use the Veil to travel through certain walls and passages. These two things alone make
01:00:00the Veil worth having but it does not stop there. The first power that you will add to your medallion
01:00:08is the ability to slow down time effectively entering the game's version of bullet time. It's awesome.
01:00:14You move significantly faster than the enemies. It allows you to kill them much quicker. It also lets you
01:00:21deal with groups of enemies easier and allows you a greater opportunity to run up to enemies and
01:00:28melee them before they have time to react if you really want to. This will be your most used power
01:00:35in this game but it is not your only one. The second power you get is a protective shield. This
01:00:43was the
01:00:43power up shown off in the intro cutscene to the game that allows you to block incoming fire to protect
01:00:52yourself for a short period of time. It also lets you bypass certain environmental hazards unharmed that
01:01:01would harm or kill you otherwise. If I am being honest, this is my least used Veil power. I did
01:01:10not
01:01:10feel the need to use it that much when slowing down time proves so much more useful. The last of
01:01:18the Veil
01:01:19powers is called Empower and it makes your bullets stronger. Not only do they do more damage to enemies,
01:01:27but they can rip right through the black sun shields enemies set up and hide behind as well.
01:01:35This becomes incredibly useful because there are enemies that use the power to throw up shields to
01:01:43protect allies. For a lot of the game you just have to target them first, but that all changes when
01:01:51you
01:01:51get Empower. It's a hell of a lot of fun. There is one more thing of note in the levels.
01:01:57There are objects
01:01:58like hammers and axes that you can pick up. These can be thrown but won't do much. You can however
01:02:08keep them equipped to melee enemies as well. This does mean that you have to get up close and personal,
01:02:17but you can combine that with your slow-mo power to do this far easier if you want to. You
01:02:23can hack
01:02:23enemies apart with axes. This may seem entirely unnecessary, but trust me.
01:02:54Up next because pedestrian mode should be!
01:02:55Up next time!
01:03:09Up next time!
01:03:26Outside of the main levels, you will find yourself in a hub area.
01:03:30In the hub area, you will find two quest giver factions.
01:03:35The Golden Dawn and the Cry South Circle.
01:03:37You will travel back and forth between the two and talk to allies in them to get your
01:03:44next quest and to go to your next level.
01:03:47On occasion, you will find someone that can give you side quests as well.
01:03:52Be on the lookout for them.
01:03:54There are passages through the sewers and on the rooftops that you can climb up to to help
01:04:01you get around and avoid Nazi patrols in the streets.
01:04:05Or you can fight them.
01:04:07I must say the patrols do get a little tiring by the time you reach the end of the game,
01:04:12but it's not that big of a deal.
01:04:14In the hub world and in the tunnels themselves, you can find a few different items.
01:04:20There is Nazi gold, just like in the previous games, but there is intel documents and tomes
01:04:29of power as well.
01:04:30The tomes power up your Veil abilities and the gold can be spent at the black market.
01:04:36The intel will give you extra bits of information here and there that flesh out the story and
01:04:43lore in the game.
01:04:44Collecting them is worth your time as it unlocks upgrades as you go.
01:04:49Speaking of upgrades, there is a third faction in Isenstad called the black market.
01:04:54This is where you will be able to purchase upgrades.
01:04:57It starts with just upgrades for your weapon.
01:04:59These include things like suppressors, large clips, and sculpts for your various weapons.
01:05:07But they will come across crystals at some point in the story as well.
01:05:11You can use them to upgrade your Veil powers, allowing you to do things like have a larger
01:05:18pool of Veil energy and slowing down time even slower.
01:05:22You will want to visit the black market repeatedly throughout the game so you can upgrade your
01:05:32arsenal and powers.
01:05:34Keep it in mind as you play.
01:05:37It baffles me that this game didn't get better review scores than it did.
01:05:40The critical consensus is mostly in the 70's, which is not bad, but this game is a hell of
01:05:47a lot better than the reviewers at the time would make it out to be.
01:05:52This game is fun as fuck.
01:05:54The weapons are a blast to use.
01:05:56Enemies do a decent job fighting back.
01:05:58The Veil powers give a supernatural twist that really helps this game stand out.
01:06:05Wolfenstein plays great.
01:06:07I enjoyed the hell out of replaying this one for this video, and the turret turning slow,
01:06:14rocket troopers, and the one boss fight are really my only negatives.
01:06:19What about replay value?
01:06:21Unfortunately, playing this game online is going to be a tough sell nowadays, but you do unlock
01:06:27cheats that you could use on a second playthrough.
01:06:31You also have to be quite thorough to find all of the intel and golden tomes of power.
01:06:38You are not likely to get all that stuff on your first playthrough.
01:06:42That does give it some replay value.
01:06:46That combined with just how fun this game is to play through, leaves me feeling like I
01:06:54will play through it again sometime in the future.
01:06:57All in all, Wolfenstein 2009 is a complete package with a few downsides.
01:07:03The characters are not all that memorable, but the set pieces and environmental storytelling
01:07:08more than make up for it.
01:07:10The gunplay is great.
01:07:12It looks good.
01:07:14It sounds incredible.
01:07:15I hope this game one day gets a remaster that it deserves.
01:07:20I hope that remaster fixes the FOV issue.
01:07:24Then this game would be damn near perfect.
01:07:27As it stands, it is one of the better shooters from its era and I cannot recommend it highly
01:07:33enough.
01:07:34What you have been looking at for this entire time is the PC version and it is the best
01:07:39version of the game.
01:07:40It looks better than the console ports and it plays at a higher frame rate.
01:07:47It did come to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well.
01:07:52This is the PlayStation 3 port.
01:07:54The PlayStation 3 version runs at 720p and shoots for 30 FPS.
01:08:00It is a decent enough way to play the game and it is easy to set up with a good
01:08:05sound system
01:08:06in your living room.
01:08:07It is not your only console option though.
01:08:10The game released on the Xbox 360 as well.
01:08:14This version is 720p but the Xbox 360 will upscale it to 1080p.
01:08:20It shoots for 30 FPS as well.
01:08:23The two versions of the game look pretty damn close to each other and I would have a hard
01:08:30time telling you which one is definitively better than the other.
01:08:35At least at a glance.
01:08:36I do not have the proper tools to test frame rates however.
01:08:42They are both decent ways to play this game though.
01:08:46Here is where we run into trouble though.
01:08:48There is no easy way to acquire this game nowadays.
01:08:51If you want to own a legal copy of this game you have to get a used physical copy for
01:08:57the
01:08:57PC, Xbox 360, or PlayStation 3.
01:09:01There is no other way around it.
01:09:02It is not backwards compatible for the Xbox One or Series either.
01:09:07You have to have the original consoles in order to play this.
01:09:12Night Dive.
01:09:13I am begging you to remaster this game and make it available again.
01:09:17It deserves better.
01:09:21This game was a lot of fun to revisit.
01:09:23Have you played it?
01:09:24If you did, let me know what you think of it.
01:09:27I quite like it.
01:09:28I hope you guys enjoyed this video.
