Hey everone. Doing two reviews back to back is always mentally and emotionally exhausting, but I am done. I have done it. I have finished both the review of Wolfenstein 2009 and of Dead Space 3. I had a lot to say on thnis one. How could I not? They changed so many thing between 2 and this game. There is a lot to talk about. I did not even get to all of it. I did not bring up the scavenger bots that gather scraop for you, for instance. I still think I covered enough of my bases though. I am more or less happy with thuis one. I do not feel like my review of this game suffred because of how drained I was from my Wolfen stein video. That has happened in the past. Oh. The video of Carver's point of view was recorded by Dalton. I will link to the full vbiudeo below. Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoy.

00:00Hey everyone, it's the Doom Dog.
00:02Dalton and I recently finished another Let's Play on the channel, and you know what that
00:06means.
00:07It's time for another video review.
00:10This time we played through something more controversial.
00:13Dead Space 3, released in 2013 for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
00:20We played through the PC version of the game.
00:23Why was this game controversial?
00:25And is it as bad as its reputation?
00:28Join me as we take a look at Dead Space 3 and find out.
00:33If you were a fan of Dead Space from the start and followed it through the trailers onward
00:39like I did, you probably had this lingering concern in the back of your mind that EA would
00:45do what they do best.
00:47They have a long established tendency to meddle in games their developers are making and that
00:54meddling has resulted in many classic games series transforming into something unrecognizable
01:00until the sales tank and the studio making them is closed.
01:05EA has a long history of doing this.
01:07They have a graveyard of developers they have killed off as a result.
01:14They did this to Pandemic Studios who created the Battlefront games as well as Mercenaries.
01:20They closed Origin and killed off one of the oldest video game RPG series in existence, Ultima,
01:29in the process.
01:32They closed Danger close and destroyed the Medal of Honor franchise.
01:36Most famously, they destroyed Westwood Studios who made Doom 2 and Command and Conquer.
01:44Dead Space 1 was a success for EA.
01:46It sold 2 million copies.
01:49Which was good for a new horror IP during a generation where horror was mostly a dead genre.
01:56At least the AAA games.
01:58The budget for Dead Space 2 was higher as a result.
02:02While we do not know what EA set the sales goals for the second game, we do know that it
02:10sold better than the first game but ultimately brought in less money.
02:14I guess EA was expecting Resident Evil 5 sales numbers without realizing that it was riding
02:22off the coattails of a genre defining industry changing title that sold insanely well.
02:30No other horror series has ever done Resident Evil numbers.
02:34The ultimate result of this is that we can be pretty damn certain that EA did step in here
02:42and start interfering with the team's plans for the third game in the series.
02:47I hate to say that this is a predictable outcome, but it was.
02:53If you know EA's history, you know their pattern.
02:57And you know exactly what happens when they do bother to step in.
03:02What does this mean for Dead Space 3?
03:05Is it an irredeemable trash fire or is there something to like here?
03:11Join me as I take a look at Dead Space 3 and find out.
03:14After a brief recap of the first two games, the game starts with you not playing as Isaac
03:20Clark.
03:21Instead, you start off 200 years in the past on an ice planet called Tal Volantis.
03:27You play as a soldier fighting through the snow when he stumbles upon a crashed ship.
03:32You are ordered to enter it and search for a cylinder within.
03:36You find it on the bridge and the ship starts to slide off of a cliff.
03:43You bungee jump down the side of the cliff.
03:47At the bottom, you are greeted by the corpses of your fellow soldiers and a general who is
03:52alive.
03:53He shoots you, he erases whatever is on the cylinder, and he kills himself as well.
03:59After this, we flash to the present day.
04:02Isaac is living alone in a small apartment.
04:05And he has been trying to separate himself from the events of the past two games, the
04:10marker and EarthGov.
04:11He had a relationship with Ellie between the games, but that is over now.
04:16She wanted to continue to pursue the markers and do her best to stop them.
04:22But he is so damaged and tired of it at this point that he wants no part of it.
04:29The two are now separated as a result of that.
04:32He seems to want to lead a quiet solitary life and go unnoticed.
04:38Well, the Church of Unitology does not want that.
04:42Isaac destroyed two markers and they see him as a threat to their goals.
04:47They want to find and kill him so he cannot destroy any more markers.
04:52Furthermore, they seem to have overpowered EarthGov to the point where they really do not
05:01have an army anymore.
05:03They are finding places where the manufactured markers are stored and are freeing them, causing
05:11the cycle of necromorphs all over again.
05:14Their leader is a man named Danik, who kind of looks like Elton John for some reason.
05:18A couple of men claim to be the last surviving representatives of EarthGov's military bust down
05:26the door and barge into Isaac's apartment.
05:28It seems that Ellie has gone missing.
05:31One of the last transmissions they got from her before she went missing was about how
05:37Isaac seems to be the only person that can stop the markers and the necromorphs.
05:43Because of this, Isaac is given no choice in the matter.
05:47He is to set off from Earth, find Ellie, and put a stop to the markers once and for all.
05:53This is the basic setup for the story of Dead Space 3.
05:56And for the most part, it feels like a logical continuation of the first two games and I
06:00like it.
06:01It does have one glaring issue that just bugs the hell out of me though.
06:07What happened to EarthGov slash the army?
06:09Are you telling me that there was some kind of civil war between the Unitologist and the
06:13better trained, better equipped army and the Unitologist won?
06:16Not only did they win, but they were so thoroughly dominant that these two are all that's left?
06:21I have a hard time believing that.
06:24I wish I could say that the rest of the story is smooth sailing, but it's not.
06:28Do not get me wrong here.
06:29There is a lot to like about this game's story.
06:32It has a lot of big revelations about the marker of the necromorphs and Tal Volantis.
06:37It provides a satisfying end to the series with one minor little cliffhanger at the end,
06:43though it should be noted that there is DLC that I have not played.
06:47It feels like a definitive end to the story of the series and the necromorph threat as a
06:54whole.
06:55It also proposes a solution to the Fermi Paradox when you think about it.
07:00Trust me when I say that you are in for a lot of cool Dead Space lore and some great
07:06twists and turns as you play through this game, just like it was with the first two games,
07:11but the characters and character writing are a noticeable step back from the previous two
07:18games.
07:18For example, Ellie got a boyfriend sometime between her and Isaac breaking up and the
07:25start of the game.
07:27It is very fucking obvious that the devs wants you to hate him because he has zero personality
07:34traits outside of being a jerk to Isaac.
07:37Here's the thing, writing can direct you toward liking or hating certain characters like this,
07:43but good writing will hide it from you so that you don't notice that that is what it's
07:48doing.
07:49Fear makes you hate Norton Mapes far more than Harlan Wade despite Harlan Wade being objectively
07:56worse by a wide margin.
07:58Dead Space 3 does not even attempt to do this, it is very blunt in how it handles this and
08:05it makes the character interaction so much worse because you have no choice but to notice
08:11it.
08:12I do not mind if you don't want us to like Ellie's boyfriend, anyone that played the
08:16first two games is already on Team Isaac.
08:19But do not make it so painfully obvious that that is what you are doing, that is just bad
08:24writing.
08:25Furthermore, Dead Space has a second protagonist named John Carver.
08:29He is a decent and likeable character with a fleshed out backstory, but you will only get
08:35that if you play this game co-op.
08:37You will get the most out of it if you play co-op as Carver.
08:43If you play the single player, you will not get his backstory and it makes things he says
08:46toward the end of the game make little to no sense.
08:49When you are playing it single player, it seems like he is a shallow character whose development
08:54is entirely off screen and now it wants you to care about him.
09:00That is because his development was entirely off screen.
09:03All in all, the Dead Space 3 story is a mixed bag.
09:06If you are really into the lore of the series, it provides a lot more of that.
09:12All of that stuff is great and it gives you what felt like a definitive ending to the series.
09:18This is what you should play it for because if you play it for the character moments, you will find
09:26plenty of bad writing and characters that you do not give a shit about.
09:30Now, when you play through it co-op, you get Carver's backstory, he is a much better character at least.
09:38There is plenty of good writing there.
09:41How does it look then?
09:43There is a lot to like here graphically, just like the first two games.
09:48On a technical level, it is definitely a more detailed game than the first two games were.
09:53It is decidedly 7th Gen, but it does look a noticeable bit more advanced than the first two games.
10:03With the same great lighting and shadows that helped those games look so damn good.
10:09I do not have that much to complain about on a technical front.
10:13There is certainly a good amount to like here.
10:16In fact, there are some areas of this game that are downright gorgeous.
10:20The way the game renders snow, frozen areas, and snow storms is beautiful.
10:27It is still very pretty 13 years later to this very day.
10:33A lot of the stuff on Talvolantis is simply stunning.
10:37The ancient city that you visit in this game is also cram packed with that excellent art
10:44design that helped make Dead Space 1 and 2 so memorable.
10:47And the shots of space when you are in it in the ship graveyard are often awe-inspiring with
10:53just how pretty they are.
10:55Having said that, if you watched our Let's Play of this game, you may have heard Dalton
11:00and I talking about how this game often doesn't look quite as good as the first two games did,
11:07and we could not put our fingers on why.
11:10I think I may have figured it out.
11:13There are a lot of areas of this game that feel undercooked in their design.
11:19The wonderful art design of the first two games is largely replaced by generic, rundown,
11:25rusted hallways.
11:27Those areas really stick out like a sore thumb in a series known for its top tier art design.
11:32There is something going on with this game's characters as well.
11:35I do not know what it is, but I swear the character models have looked worse with each
11:40progressive game as opposed to better.
11:43Was this a conscious choice by the developers or something?
11:46What happened here?
11:48I did not mention it in my review of 2 because I thought I was imagining things, but no I
11:54wasn't.
11:55They really do look worse in this game than they did in the first two.
11:58What the hell, man?
12:00Is it possible for a game to look better than the previous two entries, but also worse at
12:06the exact same time?
12:07That is kind of how I feel about the graphical presentation of this game.
12:11When it allows itself to be Dead Space and to show off that wonderful art design the series
12:18is known for, it is the best looking game in the series.
12:21When it doesn't, and you are stuck in another generic brown or grey rundown corridor, yet
12:29again it looks worse than the previous two games, is the definition of a mixed bag.
12:36How does it sound?
12:37Dead Space 1 and 2 set incredibly high bars with their truly amazing sound design.
12:43This game hits the high marks of the first two games, mostly.
12:50The sound of the various weapons to fire has not changed between games, so they still sound
12:58good.
12:58The sound of necroborphs still has not changed, so they are still grotesque and creepy.
13:05The atmospheric audio is still excellent, just like it always has been.
13:10Nothing has changed in this regard, and the game is better for it.
13:14Likewise, the voice acting is still good across the board.
13:18The character writing may have suffered in this game compared to the first two, but the
13:22characters take the at times bad dialogue that they were given, and they give it their
13:29all.
13:30Each individual character is well voiced, and up to the typical standards of the first two
13:36games of the series.
13:37Once again, Dead Space 3 reaches the high water mark of the previous games in this regard.
13:45Where it is let down a bit is music.
13:48The music has changed.
13:50Where the previous game had one single composer for their music, this game has two different
13:54composers.
13:55Maybe that is why the music is different here than it was in the first two games.
14:00The loud strings and stings of the previous game is replaced by a much more traditional
14:07symphonic score more often than not.
14:10It hurts the atmosphere in my opinion.
14:13And it is not at all what you expect from Dead Space.
14:17Do not get me wrong, the music in this game is by no means bad.
14:23It just does not sound like what you would expect from a series in a sense.
14:29It is definitely a let down.
14:30The sound overall is a bit of a mixed bag, just like the graphics and the story.
14:36It is a shame too, Dead Space has a unique audio identity and it reaches those lofty highs
14:42in terms of environmental audio, enemy and gun audio work.
14:47The voice acting is just as good as ever, but the music lets it down by sounding like something
14:54that comes out of a completely different series a lot of the time.
14:58It is not even bad, and it can work sometimes.
15:04It worked out great in Halo 4, but this game does not have anything that reaches the lofty
15:10heights of tracks like 117 or Haven from that game.
15:15Does the gameplay save it?
15:16This is where we start running into real trouble.
15:19This is where EA's meddling really shines through the absolute most.
15:24Let's go over all the things that changed for this game compared to the first two.
15:30First off, this is a co-op game primarily.
15:33The game will remind you that it is a co-op game at every turn.
15:37You will constantly be coming up to doors with panels or whatever that very clearly have two
15:44spots on them where each player is supposed to stand to remind you that the whole thing
15:50was designed to be played with a second player first and foremost.
15:55Beyond this, the only way to get the full story is to play it co-op.
15:59The game has a lot of side missions that will take up a significant chunk of its runtime.
16:06The only way to get access to them is through playing it with a co-op partner.
16:11Not only does basically all of John Carver's backstory and development happen in these missions,
16:17but it presents to you some of the best parts of the game within them.
16:22There will be moments in this game where one player will see something completely different
16:29from the other player despite the two of you being in the exact same room.
16:34And it is really cool.
16:35It makes for some of the most memorable sections of this game.
16:39And the only way to experience it all is to play through it twice, once with each character.
16:44This game de-emphasizes cutting off limbs.
16:48It is still here and you will do plenty of it over the course of the game, but you will
16:53find that a more standard submachine gun works fine for killing enemies as well.
17:00You need to do less tearing enemies limb from limb in this game than you did in the previous
17:04games.
17:05And I know what you're thinking.
17:06That doesn't sound very Dead Space.
17:08And you're right, it doesn't.
17:10That isn't all though.
17:11There is now a cover system in a game that never needed a cover system before.
17:15I know what you're thinking.
17:17A cover system in a game where undead nightmares charge at you.
17:22I agree with you.
17:23It sounds pointless.
17:25But they are not the only enemies that you will fight in this game.
17:29You will fight other human beings and the game will let you know that there are going
17:33to be other human beings to fight when the environments are covered in chest high walls.
17:39The cover system comes into play with those enemies.
17:43Another change they made is universal ammo.
17:48You know how previous games had you picking up ammo for your various weapons and you might
17:55run low on your preferred weapon forcing you to switch to a different weapon.
18:01Instead, there is none of that here because the weapons all share the same ammo.
18:07Explosive firing weapons have the exact same ammo type as the plasma cutter.
18:12And no, that statement does not make any sense at all.
18:16You know how you found nodes in the previous games and used them to upgrade your weapons
18:22and suit over time and you would have to find the best path to the various upgrades because
18:30some nodes were going to be put in empty slots that just did nothing?
18:37That is gone.
18:39It is replaced with you collecting various types of scrap and you will use the scrap to
18:45upgrade your weapons, armor, and equipment as you play through the game.
18:50It has a crafting system now that you will use to upgrade your stuff.
18:56You can use parts you have crafted for new upgrade parts to slot into your weapons.
19:02This is not all you can do with the crafting materials though.
19:06You can use them to craft whole new weapons.
19:09You can make a wide variety of weapon styles and each weapon will have two functions.
19:17An upper weapon and a lower weapon that are attached to each other.
19:21The upper weapon might be a shotgun while the lower weapon tosses grenades or something.
19:27But if I am being honest with you, this is the coolest new thing they brought to this game.
19:33Playing with the various parts and building your own weapons or crafting new ones with the
19:40parts and blueprints that you have is cool.
19:43Trying them out is a lot of fun too.
19:47If you are guessing that they made these changes to facilitate microtransactions where you can
19:54pay EA money for upgrade packs and what not to get better weapons, equipment, and armor,
20:01you know EA well because yes, this has a store where you can buy this shit to this very day.
20:09You cannot convince me that EA did not meddle in this game during its development.
20:14Because this kind of shit seems directed at getting you to purchase packs to upgrade your
20:20weapons.
20:21What feels predatory about it though is the early game.
20:26Weapons in the early game feel weak and underpowered.
20:30You can switch to more powerful options like shotguns but the fire rate feels slow.
20:36I swear it takes so long to reload that you will take unnecessary damage and it feels like EA is
20:42wagging a sign in your face telling you to purchase upgrades.
20:46It feels predatory if I am being honest but you do not need to do these things this way.
20:51This game overall is pretty easy and you will push past it and get better weapons before too long,
20:59negating any need to buy the packs. The taste of how gross these practices are still lingers though.
21:08The problems start almost as soon as you start playing. You start off trudging through a snowstorm
21:14on an icy planet called Tau Volantis and you reach a crashed ship. You know something is wrong
21:22immediately when you encounter your first few enemies. They are not necromorphs. They are zombies.
21:29I am sorry. I signed up to tear apart necromorphs. I did not sign up for typical zombies.
21:36Why am I fighting zombies? This really starts the game off on the wrong foot.
21:42They changed so many things between Dead Space 2 and this game that it does not feel like Dead Space
21:50anymore a hell of a lot of the time. Given that it is a Dead Space game, this is a
21:56major problem
21:56and I cannot blame you if you flat out hate this game for it. I get it. I really do.
22:03I wanted a Dead
22:04Space game. I did not get it. Regardless of what this game may do well, it is a giant albatross
22:12hanging
22:12around the neck of it. It is alien compared to the first two games. They changed too damn much.
22:19What is more frustrating is that there are moments where you feel what could have been really shine
22:27through. This game has moments and segments where it really does start to feel like Dead Space. You get
22:35the wonderful art design of the previous games and you get some really cool environments to fight enemies
22:40in. There are none more stand out than towards the end of the game when you are exploring the alien
22:48city.
22:49For all its faults, this game goes out on a high note. If you can push past how much this
22:55game
22:56changes from the previous games, you will find that it does not do anything particularly badly.
23:03It hands out upgrade parts and scrap often enough that you will not feel the need to
23:11buy upgrade packs from the game's store. The early game may be a little bit of a slog to get
23:18through,
23:19but you can do it. You do not need to buy the in-game packs. The weapon crafting system really
23:26is cool,
23:27and shooting still feels as solid as it ever did in the series. The weapons are still fun to fire.
23:36What this game excels at more than anything really is being a co-op experience. You can play through this
23:45game as a single player shooter and get some fun out of it, but playing through it with a friend
23:50really is the way to go. This game was built around co-op and it is most obvious in the
23:58game's side
23:59missions that are only accessible in co-op. These will see the two of you working together to uncover
24:07Carver's Carver's backstory and secrets of his past, as well as additional little side stories
24:12that flesh out the world as you travel through it. What is truly great about these is how different
24:19these are depending upon which character you are playing. When Dalton and I were discussing this and
24:26we realized that the environments look very different depending upon if you are playing as Carver
24:32or Isaac, that was really cool and it made us want to see where the game was going with it.
24:40These side missions are when the game is at its absolute best and you will only get more out of
24:48Carver as a character if you play through them. Here's the thing, if you are looking for a game that
24:54is true to the horror experience of the first two games of the series, you will not get it here.
25:00If you
25:01hate the game for that, I completely understand, but the game is not completely without merit.
25:08If you go into this for a decent third person shooter, you will get that. If you want a satisfying
25:14into the Dead Space storyline, you get that. If you want a fun co-op experience to play with your
25:20friends, you get that as well. There is fun to be had here. What about replay value? This is where
25:28the
25:28game excels the absolute most. There is a lot of replay value in this game. There are plenty of
25:35weapons to build and experiment with and you can play it as a single player game or as a co
25:41-op shooter.
25:42Even when you play through it once in each of these ways, you will not have seen everything that it
25:47has
25:47to offer because you get a different experience playing co-op as Carver. This game has replay value
25:56in spades. Dead Space 3 is the definition of a mixed bag. For everything it does right, it feels like
26:03it
26:03does something wrong as well. It is not a proper Dead Space sequel. I want to hate it for that
26:11because
26:11how much I love the first two games. But I can't. I cannot deny that I had a lot of
26:17fun playing
26:18through it with Dalton. And I cannot deny that it does give a good and satisfying end to the Dead
26:24Space storyline. I have a hard time fully recommending the game because it is so obviously at war with
26:31itself because of EA interference. But there is fun to be had for those of you that can push past
26:39that.
26:40What you have been looking at this entire time is the PC version of this game. If you want the
26:45best
26:45looking version of the game with the best frame rate, this is the way to go. But it does have
26:52console ports. I usually show off more than one port, but I really only have the PlayStation 3 version of
27:00the game. The port renders at 720p, though you can run it at 1080i as well. It shoots for 30
27:08FPS,
27:09and it feels like it achieves it significantly more often than 1 and 2 did. It looks nice. It
27:18plays well. There is an Xbox 360 port as well, and it does work on the Xbox One in series.
27:26I have not played that version of the game though. Still, the console version is a good way to experience
27:32this game. Thanks for watching. This was a long let's play and this end of the trilogy and review
27:39of this game was a long time coming as such. What do you think about Dead Space 3? Do you
27:45hate it for
27:45not feeling like a Dead Space game? Or were you able to push past that and see that there is
27:51still a fun
27:52shooter underneath all of that? Please like, comment, and subscribe. Be sure to ring the bell to make
