00:46Well, this is the first time that I've let the does and the fawns down into the lower
00:50pin since I planted grass.
00:52And I can't let them stay down here too long because they'll do some damage to this new
00:56grass, but I thought I would give them a chance to taste some fresh grass for a minute before
01:02I pushed them back up in the other pin.
01:51So now I'm going to go to the top of the top of the top and the top of the
01:56top of the
02:01We've got a big winter storm headed our way at the moment but there's a few things I want to
02:05get
02:05done to the root cellar before the rain shuts things down and I really want to get it sealed up.
02:35So using the angle gauge on my phone and my chainsaw I cut the pitch of this little false front
02:42roof to about 32 degrees and then once it's done I'm going to seal the plastic up against the back
02:47of it so no water can get in and damage it.
02:57As parents we're always trying to find that balance between what's fun what's educational and what's actually worth our kids
03:03attention and sometimes you just need a few uninterrupted minutes to get dinner made answer an email or just get
03:09a few things done around the house screens are always an easy option but we love finding something that's just
03:14as entertaining without one.
03:16That's why we're glad we discovered YOTO. YOTO a screen-free audio player for kids age 3 to 12 that
03:23brings stories music learning and imagination together in one simple device.
03:28Kids just pop in an audio card and take the lead themselves no camera no microphone no ads just their
03:34own imagination running the show.
03:36With more than 1,300 audio cards including stories in Spanish and French there's something for every age and interest.
03:42We've been loving YOTO because it gives the kids some real independence and we love that there are so many
03:47options storybooks music science dinosaurs and even different languages it's learning but in a way that actually feels fun.
03:56The reason YOTO has become such a big part of our routine isn't just because it's screen-free it's because
04:03our kids genuinely love it.

04:18Add a little more imagination and a little less screen time to your family's day with YOTO. Thank you YOTO
04:25for sponsoring this video.
04:50Add a little bit July to see.
05:26I'm literally going to pile dirt up behind this false front wall to basically match the pitch
05:32of the peak and then I'm going to taper it back into the hillside and then I'm going to plant
05:36grass seed
05:37on top of it. So I need to seal this up really well.
06:21Once I start piling dirt up on top of the root cellar, it's going to push against this
06:25false front wall. So I need to build a brace to support it. And then once that's done,
06:30I'm going to stretch the six mil plastic over the top of everything and then I'm basically
06:34ready to start backfilling.
07:14I want you to look real closely at this. This is all hand painted by a friend of mine that
07:19I go to church with named Tom. And after I saw the kind of work that he did, I asked
07:25him
07:25if he would paint a sign for the front of our house on a rock that I found up on
07:29the
07:29side of the mountain a couple of years back.
07:40The detail in the painting is mind blowing.
08:04A couple years back when I was cutting in the trail across the side of the mountain, I came
08:09across this flat stone and somehow I didn't break it with the excavator. And I eventually
08:15hauled it down here and I've had it sitting up against the shop for quite a long time while
08:19I tried to figure out what to do with it.
08:28I've decided to turn this big flat stone into an address rock with a little bit of detail.
08:54I have this rock sitting up against my shop for pretty close to a year before I finally decided
09:00what to do with it. And for a long time I thought about turning it into a memorial stone for
09:04my
09:04little brother, but I've since talked myself out of that. So it's going to be an address stone.
09:48So, you're a little bit like that to me.
10:15Now I wouldn't normally make a video about an address stone, but I like that flat piece
10:20of rock so much and I like the work that my friend Tom did so much I thought I would
10:24do it and on top of
10:25that somebody put our address out on the internet a long time ago and at this point I really don't
10:30care that much plus you're gonna need my address when you come and stay in our cabins so it is
10:36what
10:37it is. My friend Tom was a professional sign painter for many years and he painted everything from
10:54storefronts to billboards and again when I saw the work that he was capable of I thought to myself
11:00I bet this guy could paint a fallow deer buck and make it look awesome.
11:28Now that flat stone weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of a couple hundred pounds maybe
11:33even a little bit more than that and I want to hang it by those holes that I drilled through
11:37the stone
11:38but I'm gonna support it across the bottom with those lodgepole pine logs as well so I really don't
11:44want this to fall apart in the coming years so I'm building some straps to hold everything together.
12:27So when you come to Red Poppy Ranch to ring the bell you're going to be looking for a sign
12:32hanging from the
12:33of these posts.
13:04Function!
13:04No.
13:29Up to the top of your head.
13:29I can miss my kid and I'm going to have to go to the couch where I'm going to make
13:29a
13:29In Be True you guys, you're going to have to get to the nightdeme if you're going to be a
13:29daydose.
13:29I'm going to be time for my kids, but I think I said you're going to have to be a
13:32place where I'll be aware of.
13:59So
14:00this is the first layer
14:01of the 6mm plastic that I'm going to put down over the top of the root cellar.
14:04And before I'm finished, I'll end up putting down four layers.
14:08As long as I don't damage it in the process of backfilling and compacting,
14:11and as long as I don't overstretch it,
14:13this should last a very, very long time.
14:15But I've also got to get the vents through the roof as well.
14:45The best venting system for a root cellar would be two different vents.
14:49And one's going to bring in cold air and one's going to let any hot air out.
14:53And so I'm putting them on opposite sides of the root cellar.
14:56And once I get everything backfilled and finished,
14:58I'm going to extend the vents up over the top.
15:01And again, one will go down low to the bottom of the floor,
15:04and one will let any hot air out up closer to the ceiling.
15:33This is the second layer of the 6mm plastic.
15:36And once I get all of the plastic in place,
15:38I'm going to very carefully place a whole bunch of rocks around the edges
15:42so it takes the natural shape that will prevent the plastic from getting torn or stretched
15:48before I start piling all the dirt on top of it
15:50that could potentially do damage to the plastic if it's not sitting in the right place.
16:23So every time I put a layer of plastic down on the root cellar, I seal around the vents,
16:28and then I seal it across the ridge on the front to make sure that once I put the dirt
16:34in place,
16:35that any moisture that does get up here doesn't get under the plastic layers.
17:06And I'll see you next time.
17:12Using the Tyvek tape that I had left over from building the house,
17:15I'm sealing the plastic against the concrete
17:18so when I do backfill it that the plastic is sitting in the right place
17:21and I don't have to worry about water getting behind the plastic.
17:42Okay, so those two vents, one will be down low and one will be up high.
17:48One will be to get rid of the hot air, one will be to bring cold air in.
17:52But I just needed to get them roughed in and sealed, and sealed really well, and I did that.
17:57Every layer of plastic has tape around it that seals it, and this is tape that I used when I
18:02built the house.
18:03I had Tyvek tape for the windows, so it's really durable, really sticky tape,
18:09and it was perfect for this because it's designed to stick to wood and or concrete.
18:13So I think I'm going to get out here in the morning, do some cleanup, get all my tools moved,
18:19get all the trash picked up, but I think I'm going to split the plastic that's left down the middle
18:24and drape it down a little bit lower to cover that lower block a little bit better,
18:28and then I think I'm going to start backfilling tomorrow.
18:31I think we're finally at a place where it's time to backfill.
18:46Well, my friend Tom the Sign Painter has finished our new address rock,
18:51and I can't wait to get it hung up and installed.
19:14Again, for a long time I tried to work really hard to keep our information off of the internet as
19:19far as where we live,
19:20but somebody thought it was in their best interest to constantly put our public information out there,
19:25and now I'm going to use that to our advantage.
19:28Music
20:11Tom did such an amazing job on the detail work on this sign, and it puts a smile on my
20:16face every time I pull up our driveway and I take a look at it.
21:05I'm done by hand and done with the skill of somebody like my friend Tom, and again, this turned out
21:12amazing.
21:41Music
21:42I'm going to put a glass brace underneath it and put some supports that are adjustable that I can crank
21:47up and push against the weight that's hanging off those two holes so the stone doesn't break.
22:20Music
22:23These antlers belong to the very first fallow deer buck that I got here at Red Poppy Ranch.
22:31Music
22:41So when you come to stay in our little cabins, at some point in the not too distant future, you're
22:46going to want to remember our address on this stone.
22:50Music
22:51And long live the traditional sign painter like Tom. There's not too many guys left in the world that can
22:56do what he does.
22:59Music
23:08Music
23:23So I'm named after my dad's basketball coach. My dad had enough sons to have a basketball team.
23:28And basketball is always incredibly important. He was a basketball coach.
23:33And Callie and Reed are about to start the basketball season this year.
23:37And I've been telling them for quite some time that I would get a good quality basketball hoop and get
23:42rid of the lightweight junkie hoop that we have over there.
23:45And I found this online. They don't know that I found it.
23:48I'm going to try and be sneaky about this and just dig down and pour the concrete.
23:52Let the concrete cure for a couple of days and get this set up without them finding out and just
23:57kind of see what happens.
23:58Music
24:00.
24:01.
24:01.
24:48I think all of our kids have had days up here at Red Poppy Ranch where they love it, but
24:53they've also had days where they wish that we lived in town right next door where they could run down
24:58the street and hang out with their friends.
25:11I spent more time playing basketball in our front yard both with my brothers and by myself growing up and
25:19it was just something I loved to do.
25:20And still I love to grab a basketball and shoot a few baskets while I'm thinking about whatever it is
25:26I'm thinking about.
25:27So getting rid of that junky hoop and getting something a little bit more dependable was something that I've been
25:32wanting to do for a while.
26:03So in order to support this basketball hoop properly I need to have a hole big enough to pour about
26:0918 bags of concrete down into which will end up being over a thousand pounds of support.
26:15Once I get that done I'll mount the basketball hoop and then we should be good to go for a
26:19very long time.
26:54The hole is four feet deep and I'm going to throw some rebar down in it so again when I
27:00pour all the concrete down in it it's not going to go anywhere especially with the vibration of the basketball
27:05hoop.
27:05I'm hoping that as both Reed and Callie get older that this basketball hoop takes a little bit of abuse.
27:12I cool.
27:36Here I will show you.
28:05So, again, 18, 60-pound bags of concrete
28:08comes out to be just over 1,000 pounds.
28:11Then I'm going to need to let the concrete cure
28:13for a good three days before I stand the basketball hoop up
28:16and put it together.
28:41I think I paid $150 for this old concrete mixer,
28:45and the only knock on it is it is incredibly heavy
28:48and not that easy to move around,
28:50but I've definitely got my money out of this thing over the years.
29:08I didn't play basketball in high school,
29:11but I always enjoyed playing basketball,
29:13whether it was with my friends or my brothers or with church.
29:17And even now, I enjoy dragging my kids out here,
29:20especially as Reed and Callie are both getting a little bit older
29:23and showing my kids that I can still move around the court a little bit
29:26and make a basket when it counts.
29:28But also, in southeastern Idaho where we live,
29:31there is not a sport more important than basketball.
30:01So, I'm going to make a basketball.
30:31So, I'm going to make a basketball.
30:51The concrete still needs another day or two to cure,
30:54but I want to get my mess cleaned up
30:55so the kids don't figure out what's going on.
31:24So, I'm going to make a basketball.
31:33The hard work is done, really, and it just needs some time to cure so the concrete doesn't crack when
31:38we start playing on it.
32:02The hard work is done.
32:36Now, to carefully strip the forms and then rake the gravel around and pretend like nothing ever happened.
32:57The hard work is done.
32:59The hard work is done.
33:28I went outside and got in her car and saw me setting up the basketball hoop and she stopped in
33:33her tracks and she said, whoa.
33:36The camera battery went dead when Cedar and I were standing up the post, but it really didn't take much
33:42to get it stood up.
33:43The hard work is done.
33:44The hard work is done.
34:09The hard work is done.
34:14I found it in place without any issues.
34:24The hard work is done.
34:44The hard work is done.
35:11The hard work is done.
35:14The hard work is done.
35:26The hard work is done.
35:43The hard work is done.
35:49The hard work is done.
36:18The hard work is done.
36:19The hard work is done.
