Gao Yang dreams of becoming a painter but is actually an unlucky fellow so broke he cannot even pay his rent. After a series of misfortunes, he encounters a "Jinx Spirit" and gains various supernatural abilities—though these powers depend entirely on the spirit's mood. Gao Yang falls in love at first sight with Liang Qianying; through his own persistent efforts and the Jinx Spirit's help, he ultimately pulls off a spectacular turnaround, with an underdog winning the heart of a beautiful, wealthy woman.
