00:00In Mexico, though, Hurricane Simon is bringing life-threatening flooding and destructive winds to the Pacific coast.
00:06The powerful storm pounded the coast as a Category 3 storm yesterday,
00:10closing in on Puerto Vallarta and other tourist destinations overnight and into this morning.
00:16Simon's expected to remain a powerful hurricane as it moves slowly near western Mexico this week,
00:21and eventually we will see that moisture moving into the U.S.,
00:24but for now, it really is these impacts in Mexico that we're focused on.
00:27So I want to go over your AccuWeather exclusive eyepath here, give you an idea of what we're looking at.
00:32Not even getting to landfall yet, so those are the impacts we're seeing just from it being near land moving
00:37kind of parallel at times.
00:39We get landfall Thursday evening is what we're forecasting right now as a Category 2 hurricane overall,
00:46but here's the impacts that we're talking about.
00:48Broadly speaking, anybody highlighted on this map, so you can see it does go up into Texas,
00:52does go up into New Mexico, but mostly is for Mexico.
00:55So anyone highlighted can see some kind of impacts.
00:58We're talking about storm surge, even some of you getting 6 to 10 to up to 15 feet of storm
01:03surge when all is said and done.
01:04That'll certainly lead to coastal flooding.
01:07Then we get the wind.
01:08We're talking a small area of land seeing the 80 to 100,
01:12but a lot of you anywhere from 40 to 80 mile per hour wind gusts,
01:16which will lead to some damage, lead to some power outages,
01:18kind of similar situations to what we've been talking about in the Florida Panhandle.
01:22For example, in some areas, we had some stronger wind gusts there as well.
01:26And then there's the rain.
01:27So this alone, even without the storm surge, can cause some big problems as far as flash flooding.
01:32That top category in the orange, 18 to 24 inches,
01:36where some localized totals could even get up to 38 inches of rain.
01:41So definitely want to be prepared for this storm.
01:44And you can see that moisture moves all the way up into the U.S.
