Ton Steine Scherben – Warum Geht Es Mir So Dreckig? 1971 (Germany, Krautrock-Agitrock-Proto-punk)

Ton Steine Scherben was a Berlin-based band active from 1970 to 1985 under the leadership of Rio Reiser. They were one of the earliest and most influential German rock bands. Their lyrics were steeped in social criticism, anarchist and anti-capitalist sentiments, and fierce condemnation of all forms of oppression and oppressors. Crucially, the lyrics were entirely in German—unlike those of almost all other German rock bands in the early 1970s. This earned the band cult status among the political Left and specific social movements, as well as within the German-language rock scene. Ton Steine Scherben played a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of German-language punk rock and the German New Wave. Founded in 1970, the band members lived together in a commune during the years that followed. This was a time when the hippie movement had recently emerged and Western Europe was being swept by a wave of student protests and activism by leftist and socialist movements. Caught up in this wave, Ton Steine Scherben became its "mouthpiece." One of their first hits was the song "Macht Kaputt Was Euch Kaputt Macht" ("Destroy What Destroys You"). That line—along with others, such as "Keine Macht Für Niemand" ("No Power for Anyone")—became a slogan among the radical Left. The band released its debut album independently in 1971. This is an incredibly raw yet inspired work of proto-punk; the band's rebellious lyrics won them the favor of the far-left, particularly within the squatter movement. The first side of the record was recorded live. Critics regard this album as the first significant German-language rock record, and it rightly remains one of the best of its kind. The band remained active until 1985, eventually disbanding—partly due to financial reasons—after becoming mired in debt.
