What REALLY happened with Jayden Daniels/Commanders at the end of the NYG game? Bad time management? Was it more on JD or HC Dan Quinn? Let's hear from Quinn
Transcript
00:00Poor time management by the outfit that he runs over the weekend.
00:05Shyam, you want to get right to that?
00:06Yeah, let's hear from Dan Quinn, Greg.
00:08With the coaches today, and honestly just furious about our execution
00:13in the crucial moments of the game, we worked really hard on these,
00:18and it didn't look like it yesterday, and pissed about it.
00:22So I'll take you through overtime.
00:24We wanted to use some clock after getting into field goal range.
00:28There had been four kicks that had been missed in the game.
00:31So burning some time is the smart call as you kick near the end of the game.
00:36With about 56 seconds, we handed off to Rashad White,
00:39and it took entirely too long from there on to execute our strategy,
00:43from subbing to clock awareness to clocking the ball.
00:48When I told the team and with the coach, it was a breakdown.
00:50It can't happen.
00:51And our time today as a team was spent on the how and the why
00:55and make sure that it never does again.
00:57So yesterday's ending was the biggest example,
01:01but we've got a lot of shit to clean up on from yesterday's game.
01:04And trust me, everyone in this building, starting with me, feels that urgency.
01:09So then you'd really be throwing your offensive coordinator under the bus
01:13because he's right.
01:15At 50 seconds, the ball was already spotted and was second down.
01:19They didn't snap the ball until 12 seconds on the clock.
01:22And then by the time that they hit panic mode, it was probably seven seconds
01:27and guys were just walking back.
01:29So what he should have did is after they ran the ball,
01:32he should have told the offensive coordinator,
01:35hey, we're just going to clock it here.
01:37Wait till there's about four seconds on the clock.
01:39Snap the ball and then clock it.
01:42And we'll come out and we'll kick whatever it was.
01:43The ball's at the 24-yard line.
01:45We'll come out and kick the game-winning field goal.
01:46He's just a guy who keeps getting chances.
01:49You know, he's a head coach and then he goes
01:51and he's a defensive coordinator somewhere, Dallas or wherever,
01:55and then he gets another chance.
01:56And I just don't know that there's also a lot of...
02:00Well, I think this is only his second head coaching chance.
02:02So just Falcons in here is his second chance.
02:05And he got to the NFC Championship in his first year.
02:08He got to the Super Bowl at the Falcons.
02:09I mean, there are a lot of really inept coaches out there.
02:12I mean, the backwards hat really is not his friend.
02:15I was just going to say there's a lot of complaints
02:17about him wearing a backwards hat at his age.
02:20Those are all men.
02:20What is the cutoff?
02:22Well, you don't mind.
02:23I love it.
02:23You love it.
02:24Even on a 40, 50, really, 60-year-old with a backwards hat?
02:29Hot.
02:29Sure.
02:29Really hot.
02:30Yeah.
02:30I think it's really does it fit the dude's look, right?
02:33You know what I mean?
02:34Yes.
02:34What if he had his shirt untucked?
02:36Oh, now we're talking.
02:38But this is clearly, in my opinion, on him and the coaching staff
02:42because the players were so unaware.
02:45They weren't aware of no clocking situation at all.
02:48And there's no one on God's green earth that can tell me they were
02:51because if you go back and you look at the footage,
02:53there's not one person that is trying to rush up to the line of scrimmage
02:57to clock the ball.
02:58So they were unaware.
02:59In their mind, it looks like they think they all believe
03:02that they have a timeout.
03:04The reason why I don't know why Jaden Daniels didn't throw it away
03:08for whatever reason.
03:09Maybe he felt like, all right, I don't want to do anything crazy.
03:12I don't want to make a bad decision.
03:13Let me just – no one's open.
03:14I'll just go up there.
03:16I'll, you know, dive on the ground and no problem.
03:20They'll call a timeout.
03:21We'll kick the field goal.
03:21But this, to me, is on the head coach and on the offensive coordinator.
03:25Well, especially because they started the drive with no timeouts.
03:28Right.
03:28Like, so before he's even in the huddle, he should have been told,
03:32hey, we got no timeouts here.
03:33Right.
03:33Get in the field goal range.
03:34Clock it.
03:35Let's win this game.
03:35Can we all agree that Dan Quinn will likely end up losing his job
03:38at the end of the year if they don't turn this around?
03:40I think so, yes.
03:41So at what point does Jaden Daniels get judged for not being able
03:45to understand they begin the drive without a timeout and not to do that?
03:48Like, when does he get held accountable?
03:49Oh, I think he gets held accountable now as well.
03:53Like, I mean –
03:54Did you hear him after the game?
03:55He certainly didn't hold himself accountable.
03:56But it's to a small extent.
03:58It's to a small extent where he's held accountable.
04:00Right?
04:01Even when Brady put up, like, he didn't realize –
04:03If Peyton Manning did this, he would be getting absolutely destroyed.
04:05Also, you can't even bring up Tom Brady.
04:07No, no, no.
04:08He did the four-down thing and we kind of, like –
04:10But he would never be in a situation where he doesn't know
04:13that they don't have any timeouts.
04:16I know.
04:16I'm not saying that.
04:17What I'm saying is players have so much on their plate.
04:21If they make a mistake, it's excusable because they –
04:25He's got a million things going on and going, like, okay.
04:28That's why I think that he gets blamed, Jaden Daniels, but it's quick
04:32because he has so much going on on his plate.
04:35He's got to think about the play call.
04:37He's got to understand the situation.
04:38So, like, there's so many things going through his mind
04:41where the coach's one job is to be like, all right, here's the situation
04:46and constantly reiterate that throughout the drive
04:49and especially in that situation.
04:51I mean, he did have – was it two seasons ago where they were 12-5?
04:55Yeah.
04:55Like, he –
04:56Yeah.
04:57Last year he was hurt.
04:57He had the NFC Championship game in his rookie year.
04:59Yeah.
05:00And if we're talking about the –
05:01But also, Dan Quinn gets some credit there as well.
05:03Oh, yeah.
05:03I should be fair to Dan Quinn.
05:05And Tom Brady forgetting the amount of downs was a national punchline
05:09and it should have been for about a month.
05:10He was old.
05:11He was ancient.
05:12He was dumb.
05:13It was five downs.
05:14Like, we literally talked about it for weeks.
05:16But the point that I'm trying to make is that players will get the –
05:20they won't get the brunt of it because of all the stuff that's going on
05:25that they have to deal with.
05:27That's why when we had it with Drake May, we said, okay, Drake May,
05:31you made the bad decision, but you got to –
05:34and we said, is Josh McDaniels and you guys telling him,
05:37hey, worst thing you could do is throw an interception?
05:39And if they go, yeah, we told them right before the play, he knew about that,
05:43then you go like, oh, that's on the player.
05:45Texter points out we can ask Brian Hoyer about this tomorrow
05:48because he has experience with forgetting downs, I think.
05:52Yeah, no, he got sacked in the Kansas City game and field goal range.
05:56And rather than them, that was the game that they almost won the COVID year
06:01with Cam Newton.
06:02He gets sacked and then they get knocked out of field goal range
06:06and it was part of them losing that football game.
06:09And the worst thing you could do in that situation is get sacked.
06:12Yeah, and the worst – I mean, Belichick's end-of-game coaching at the end
06:15was awful.
06:16The Packers game, they had the ball at the plus 45.
06:18They don't score.
06:19They pumped the ball to Aaron Rodgers.
06:20There was a lot of examples at the end there,
06:22just like there was with Tom with the five downs.
06:24I mean, it's not like –
06:25No, I'm not – I'm not – like, I'm not saying –
06:27like, I'm just saying a quarterback has so much going on his plate.
06:30You almost – and I say this all the time,
06:33you have to treat him like a four-year-old through the walkie-talkie.
06:35You know, before that thing goes off, you've got to have at least told him twice,
06:39hey, whatever we do, we have no timeouts.
06:42Pizza Shark in the Twitch chat says,
06:47Curtis, Gresh, elite clock management.
06:50Elite, elite, elite clock.
06:52I mean, the –
