00:06again this morning you have brought yet another business superstar i do i brought miss jazz why
00:13don't you introduce yourself hello everyone i'm so happy to be here my name is jasmine waller i
00:17am owner and founder of studio lush which is a hairstyle i mean hair salon located in ferndale
00:23michigan studio lush i've seen your spot go ahead you've seen my spot i've seen your spot girl let's
00:29go yes we specialize in natural hair care um custom colors hair cutting we do a lot of treatment so
00:38we
00:39just have an overall really good spot for healthy hair care jazz is a colorist i am a color that
00:45is
00:45that means she she specializes in hair color which is very difficult because women complain about the
00:52color isn't correct it took their hair out come on come on mason on and on you know something
01:00specifically with textured hair color is a very it's a niche so you have to have a certain level
01:06of experience to really make it right you went to what high school so i didn't go to high school
01:13here in detroit i went to high school in kentucky no kidding yes we moved away to kentucky when i
01:17was
01:17a kid probably about 10 years old well what did you why from my mother's work so we're detroit born
01:23we're from the east side east side um and then we moved because of her work wow how how many
01:30years
01:30did you spend in kentucky we spent eight years in kentucky whoa middle school in high school okay so
01:36you're just coming out of elementary school that had to be devastating it was devastating with the
01:43capital d because mind you detroit is a very black city right and this is what i was used to
01:48and
01:48moving to kentucky it was a culture shock for me i actually skipped school for a month really my
01:53first month your mom didn't know she did not know a truancy officer came to our door
02:08but she had to find me a school that was more diverse
02:13because it was it was i had a hard time wow so they find you this school jazz right yes
02:18you you
02:19liked it it was better so now you come back home i come back home how do you get into
02:26the hair care
02:26business it's a crowded field it's a crowded field but i always had a calling towards it so i'm come
02:32from a family of hairstylists so i was exposed young oh wow i had aunts that did hair so i
02:37was really like
02:38acquainted with salon life early okay um but it was always just a natural gift for me i think i
02:43learned how to braid second grade by the sixth grade i was doing my own hair so i knew this
02:49was
02:49something that i was supposed to do so when i moved back to detroit um i finished cosmetology school
02:55because i did a vote tech program in high school where'd you do that at virginia feral
02:59that was a beauty school dropout at virginia feral that's right she did
03:07out of my entire class i think only three people graduated
03:11there were a lot of
03:13so i used to go get a present curl for the students
03:18so let me ask you while in kentucky what what did you pick up
03:26uh about what you're doing now is there one little thing something you know everything
03:31has this place i will say that my husband whom i'm married to now i met him there
03:37are you kidding in kentucky so um i would say that's probably the biggest piece of me moving down
03:46there yeah was hair wise though i had a really good um class teacher that took a liking to me
03:54in
03:54kentucky in kentucky because i did a vote tech program so by the time i graduated high school
03:59i already had like half my hours completed amazing and you met your husband i met my husband i felt
04:06like that was the reason i can't really give you too many no that's that's that's excellent yeah so
04:12you come back home come back home you start a business no i come back home i finished cosmetology
04:18school and then i start working and you know just multiple salons i had my first salon when i was
04:2323
04:23with my aunt and is this where you were specializing in hair coloring this is where i started
04:28i started specializing in color about 2013 and it's just been kind of continuation why why why that
04:35because it wasn't many african-american colorists or colorists that dealt with texture hair during that
04:41time it was a really it was a specialty and i wanted to learn that like i wanted to do
04:47something
04:47that was different um than what was just normal within the industry and it's been you know you
04:53got an award didn't you tell them about the word you got so yeah so my hair coloring has took
04:58me
04:58thank god to a lot of different places it's funny because i actually got affiliated with um
05:04or i became introduced to the nba through a grant writing workshop and there was a young lady inside
05:12of the workshop i seen her hair and i'm like her hair will look so good blind like i'm gonna
05:16just
05:16have her come into the salon and get color and i got the content and the content actually landed me
05:21like a national award ceremony a competition rather yeah you pick somebody and said hey i'm gonna change
05:28the color of your hair i can do that was she in shock no her hair was already blind it
05:32was grown out
05:33okay it's like hey you know what you just need to color your hair and then but out you won
05:39an award
05:40i got placed for an award i didn't win but it opened up so many opportunities for me yes
05:46whoo you you have a brick and mortar i have a brick and mortar so we just recently relocated we
05:52are in
05:53ferndale 914 west nine mile road it's so pretty it's so beautiful it's about the restaurant we go to
05:59i see it all the time the picnic basket when we go there we go we're actually right across from
06:05the
06:05dairy queen so think down further yeah yeah yeah so that's the area i was trying to wow yeah we're
06:10right across from the dairy queen right that's amazing in the area yeah i'm really proud of this
06:15place how long you've been there so we've been at this location for three months but we've been in
06:21business for almost seven years now we were located in southfield at first we actually still have that
06:26location we're just doing renovations right now oh wow it's so it's so it's an experience it really
06:35is i'm really proud of it you you you meet the black business alliance how through a grant writing
06:43workshop where i where i met this young lady that got me placed in the world i i became acquainted
06:51through a grant writing workshop wow and and what would you say to this date that they've been able
06:57to help you or assist you you know it's really been a valuable resource that honestly i need to take
07:03more advantage of i would say the relationships like my relationship with charity just having her
07:07come in and her sharing a lot of information with me um i haven't had the opportunity to take any
07:13programs yet but i do plan on doing so they have so many things can you participate in the summit
07:20i did participate in the black wealth summit yeah i want to do a cool her i talk about this
07:25i'm gonna get more involved how how can people find you on your social media platforms so you can
07:32find us at studio lush detroit on instagram and tiktok studio lush detroit yes and then you can follow
07:40me personally at jazz black i'm on instagram jazz black just like her coffee yeah just like my coffee
07:46that's that's amazing uh attorney you you meet a client like this a black business owner what did
07:54you see uh that that you could do right away to help enhance what they were doing i'm gonna tell
08:02you
08:02this there's something about somebody that's passionate about what they do no matter what it is
08:06i mean the even the story of her being able to see hair and see a vision of what it
08:11can be and
08:11then make it be that thing that's amazing and there's so many entrepreneurs so many black
08:16businesses that are passionate about hair or construction or cooking or tech and the the the
08:23answer is like what might happen if they get everything that they need to succeed because
08:28the passion is you can't teach passion right but i can help you maybe get a grant or maybe i
08:33can help
