The Federal Government Ministers responsible for housing estates being built at Darwin's Lee Point are coming under more intense pressure to stop the controversial development, from cabinet colleagues. That and lobbying from Territory Labor, has exposed deep divisions within Darwin's Larrakia Indigenous community about whether concerns over sacred sites should kill the project.

00:02Larrakia custodian Lorraine Williams is appealing to the federal government to stop its defence
00:08housing company clearing land at Durban's Lee Point for 200 defence and 600 private
00:15homes.
00:16So there is a sacred site and it's out in the ocean there, but all of this land is
00:20actually really important to us.
00:22Since June, Larrakia custodians have forced a pause on the clearing, arguing in the NT
00:28cut tribunal, Indigenous stone tools shouldn't have been removed.
00:33After four years of protests, Lorraine Williams is now lobbying Indigenous Australians Minister
00:40Malindiri McCarthy, telling her the bush site's secret story.
00:45I said one on one, Aboriginal woman to Aboriginal woman, I'm going to tell you what this is
00:49about, you need to understand it.
00:51Malindiri McCarthy has in turn asked Federal Finance Minister Katie Gallagher to reconsider
00:57the development's impacts.
00:59I have advocated as the Senator for the Northern Territory for Senator Gallagher to have a look
01:04at all those issues.
01:05NT Labour MLA Ed Smelt took Katie Gallagher to Lee Point to ask her to stop the building
01:12last month.
01:13She accepted what I was saying and she understood the concerns that constituents have.
01:19But the lobbying to kill the project using sacred sites has angered Larrakia custodian Helen's
01:26secretary.
01:27We need more housing, but while I'm speaking out, Defence have been consulting with Larrakia
01:35people.
01:36We've been working good together under the cultural heritage monitoring.
01:40She says the only sacred site is on the coast, not in the bush to be cleared.
01:45It's like a reef at the tip of Lee Point.
01:50That's where Minyaburra is.
01:52Angering Lorraine Williams.
01:54If I say this is a woman's place, don't question it.
01:58Opponents are calling on the Federal Government to build its contested Lee Point housing estate
02:03on surplus land that it plans to sell off for development at its Berrimah Defence Base.
02:09I think the Defence Establishment Berrimah is a fantastic site and a terrific opportunity.
02:14Helen's secretary thinks a site swap isn't viable and she's hoping some Defence Berrimah
02:21land could go to the Larrakia.
02:23There's certain areas of land that Defence have been discussing with us to give back to
02:28the Larrakia people.
02:29Defence Housing told the ABC it's undertaken extensive consultation with the Larrakia people
02:36and restarted work at Lee Point.
02:42The Larrakia people started working with the Larrakia people and restarted work at Lee Point.
02:45The Larrakia people started working with the Larrakia people and have a dozen I think the
02:46years after the Markeia people was able to meet with the Larrakia people.
