An India Today ground check in Chennai reveals that the political poster and hoarding culture continues unabated across key areas, including Mylapore and Warren Road. Despite orders curbing illegal displays, banners and hoardings belonging to various political parties, including the ruling TVK, remain widely visible, posing significant safety hazards for pedestrians and two-wheeler riders. The issue has also reached the Madras High Court, with TVK MLA ECR Saravanan moving the court to quash an FIR registered against him over unauthorised hoardings. Amid public backlash over the civic nuisance, appeals have been issued to cadre urging them to halt the practice and remove banners, yet questions persist over enforcement.

00:00Months ago, when the TVK came to power, Chief Minister Vijay took a decision and said that
00:06there will be no more political messaging on the walls of Chennai and across Tamil Nadu,
00:11that the poster culture, the hoarding culture that's been rampant in Tamil Nadu will come
00:16to an end.
00:17Is that really the case?
00:19Not at all.
00:20What you see on your screens is what we found when we travelled to different pockets of
00:25Chennai.
00:26And clearly, the poster culture continues unabated, irrespective of which political
00:30party, by the way.
00:31The call may have come from the TVK.
00:33There are TVK posters, hoardings on the roads, as is the case for DMK, AIA, DMK, every political
00:39party continuing with these massive hoardings across the city, which means essentially this,
00:44that while we've heard a whole lot of talk, nobody's actually walked the talk.
00:49There's been no crackdown whatsoever on the hoarding culture in Chennai, in Tamil Nadu.
00:54The Madras High Court has stepped in now against one MLA, ECR Sarvanan.
00:59Now, if you live in Chennai, you know him.
01:01He is the one who puts up the maximum hoardings in the city.
01:04And while he is now issuing appeal after appeal, saying remove these hoardings, the question
01:09is whether he'll actually ensure that his hoardings are removed first, because politicians
01:14most definitely preach, but never actually walk the talk on this issue.
01:24Banners, hoardings and posters.
01:27Five months after the Tamil Nadu government ordered a crackdown on illegal banners and posters
01:32across Chennai, the ground reality tells a different story.
01:37Chennai is yet again awash with political posters of all use, including ruling TVK.
01:44We are reporting from Mailapur, and I want to show you the number of posters, the number
01:48of banners here.
01:49Look at this huge, huge banner that's being put up here at the intersection of four roads.
01:54Imagine the life risk.
01:56If there is a pedestrian that's walking close to the banner, or if there is a two-wheeler
01:59that's going there, and if the banner is a bit loose, it's just going to collapse and
02:03fall on the person that's walking here, which is extremely, extremely dangerous.
02:08India today hit the streets for a reality check, and found that the government's order has
02:13done little to change the picture on the ground.
02:15Just look at the number of posters really been put up.
02:19First is you have VCK's chief's told Tirumavallavan's poster.
02:23Right next to that you have Rahul Gandhi Vijay's poster, Praveen Chakravarti and Vijay.
02:27And up next to that you have Sivakarthi Kane and another follower of his posters.
02:33Just look at the number of posters stuck here at the walls in Warren Road.
02:39This is exactly what public keeps pulling up and flagging.
02:43The poster Rao has also landed TVK in legal trouble.
02:47Chennai police filed an FIR over illegal holdings on November 30th, 2025, near a private marriage
02:53hall.
02:54The FIR was filed against now-TVK MLA ECR Sarvanen.
02:58He's moved to the Madras High Court to quash the FIR.
03:01But amid that, an appeal now from the MLA.
03:08The poster Banner is now-TVK.
03:24The poster Banner is now-TVK.
03:36After the backlash of a civic nuisance, Taminaru Minister Busi Anand has once again appealed to Party Carder to remove
03:42posters and banners across Chennai.
03:44But the question remains, if the order came from the government, why are these posters still on the streets?
03:50One thing is clear, poster politics has never really gone away from the spotlight in Chennai.
03:56With Anika Keshav, Bureau Report, India Today.
