She talks to every little creature she meets like they’re already old friends! Atlis has a habit of turning every walk through the woods into a chance to make a new tiny friend. Dodo editor Brielle spoke with her parents about nurturing that curiosity, from outdoor tea parties to conversations with bugs and slugs, and giving her the same magical relationship with nature they remember from their own childhoods.

00:00This is a boat for you if you want to go in it.
00:03Roll, roll, roll with the boat.
00:05You want some help getting down?
00:08I was standing in her doorway and I just hear this conversation happening
00:11and I just see her out there looking down at something.
00:14It's such a detailed conversation which was like the funniest part.
00:17She was just so entranced with the slug in this dream world
00:22where she's kind of a forest fairy and gets to talk to these things.
00:26It was like Dr. Doolittle vibes.
00:28I was like, oh, she's in it.
00:37It's like the cutest thing ever.
00:39What is your background with just animals and nature and like what drew you there?
00:44We were living in New York in the concrete jungle
00:47and then when the pandemic happened we left New York
00:51and then moved back here with family in the Pacific Northwest
00:58it's actually so awesome to have a yard and to be surrounded by nature.
01:03I'm a biologist and so I was one of those kids that was obsessed with caterpillars and slugs and snakes.
01:09So just taking our kids out into our forest yard and showing them things, flipping over logs, looking under logs.
01:17Yeah, there's no log that is left unflipped.
01:20Oh, you're holding it.
01:22Show them up.
01:26What?
01:27She just kind of has a magical way in nature.
01:32She's always talking to animals and that's something that we've taught her since she was young.
01:37Have you found that people who come across your content are learning something themselves maybe?
01:43Like what have people been sharing as the effect it's had?
01:46I think it's so much nostalgia.
01:48Like everyone realizes that they were that little girl or they've seen their kids start from here.
01:56And I think watching her talking to the slugs takes me back to my earliest memories of school.
02:00They had us like raise caterpillars to be butterflies and you like release them or something.
02:04And I was like, gosh, I forgot how meaningful that was, especially at like a super young age.
02:08Yeah, people just, they're reminded that there is that magic out there in nature.
02:13And as an adult, sometimes we're a little bit too busy for that.
02:16When you're a kid, you're engaging with it all the time.
02:19A lot of people just get a lot of wholesome feelings.
02:22It's really, really amazing.
