00:00Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:02And today we're counting down our picks for the SNL hosts who ruffled feathers over at Studio 8H.
00:09This host made multiple cast members cry on Wednesday before the table read because he hated the ideas.
00:17Number 25. Shane Gillis.
00:19Considering the reasons Gillis was fired before he even made his debut as a cast member,
00:24every invitation to host felt like a game of comedy chicken.
00:28An article came out that was like, here's what this guy says.
00:32There's a clip of me saying some, you know, unsavory stuff.
00:37But here's the thing about Gillis. He's no chicken.
00:40During his season 52 hosting gig, the comedian sparked fresh controversy with misogynistic comments
00:46about women who wear a particular type of gym wear.
00:50Look, I'm sorry, there's no other way to describe...
00:52Have you seen it? I've seen it. The shorts?
00:55Have you seen the shorts?
00:56Those neon, they're like the only, they're like artificial bait coloreds.
01:02While hate might be a strong word here, cast members like Michael Che and former cast member Ego Wodem weighed
01:08in.
01:09And the backlash quickly spread beyond 30 Rock.
01:12Given Gillis' already complicated reputation, it was hardly the sort of publicity that would win him any new fans.
01:19And all the equipment, I haven't been in the gym until I added the equipment's changed.
01:23It's all like kettlebells and rubber bands and rubs.
01:25I'm not doing kettlebells fat publicly.
01:30I'd rather die.
01:31Number 24, Marissa Tomei.
01:34According to Jay Moore's memoir, the My Cousin Vinny actress was particular about who she worked with.
01:41I won the Academy Award fair and square.
01:43And I was just the happiest I'd ever been since, um, since I was named Ms. Teenage America.
01:53Moore hoped to get his sketch, Good Morning Brooklyn, off the ground.
01:57And wanted Tomei to co-present it.
01:59Apparently, she had one key question.
02:02Was he a repertory cast member or a featured player?
02:06Upon learning he was the latter, she turned him down.
02:09Raise your right hand.
02:10You swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?
02:14Yeah.
02:16Moore was disheartened by what he perceived as professional condescension.
02:20And the sketch never made it to air.
02:22However, some suggest Tomei simply disliked the material.
02:26Given this was one of SNL's more turbulent years,
02:29the rejection may have just stung more than it otherwise might have.
02:33We got home and we really didn't understand it.
02:37We were just confused.
02:39Number 23, Judge Reinhold.
02:42Following box office successes like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Beverly Hills Cop,
02:46Judge Reinhold reportedly developed a reputation for being difficult to work with.
02:51His SNL hosting gig did little to change that.
02:54I thought I was going to be nervous.
02:57This is like my show.
02:59This is my band.
03:01This is really very exciting.
03:03Cast members and writers allegedly found him conceited during rehearsals.
03:08But his opening monologue was a whole other story.
03:11Reinhold insisted on a bizarre performance involving dimmed lights,
03:15a western set piece, and several minutes spent dressing like a cowboy and whistling.
03:34Unsurprisingly, it fell flat.
03:37His closing goodnight seemed to include more passive-aggressive remarks.
03:41Reinhold later admitted his ego got the better of him, calling himself spoiled and arrogant.
03:46He was never invited back.
03:55Number 22, Bill Murray.
03:58By the 90s, SNL had moved beyond the satire of Murray's era
04:02and embraced the more energetic style of Chris Farley and Adam Sandler,
04:07which he reportedly didn't like.
04:09I love the old cast, my bunch.
04:11But I gotta tell you, they can't touch these people.
04:13They just can't.
04:13They're not as good as this current group.
04:15I know it's unfashionable to say that,
04:17but I really don't think they could cut it with these current guys.
04:22It's just not even close.
04:23Rob Schneider once said,
04:25quote,
04:25You don't know which Bill Murray you're going to get.
04:28Recalling Murray, quote,
04:29seething around the cast during their week together.
04:33Sandler reportedly bore the brunt of Murray's dislike,
04:36while Farley often faced his wrath.
04:38He's super nice to fans.
04:39He wasn't very nice to us.
04:41Absolutely hated us.
04:42I mean, he's seething.
04:43He hated Chris Farley with a passion.
04:45And he hated Sandler.
04:47Really hated Sandler, too.
04:48Schneider speculated that Farley reminded him of his late friend,
04:51John Belushi.
04:52Then there was the nine-year-old Seth Green,
04:54who recalled Murray angrily grabbing him by the ankles
04:58and dropping him into a trash can for sitting on his chair's armrest.
05:03He dropped me in the trash can.
05:05The trash can falls over.
05:06I was horrified.
05:07I ran away, hid under the table in my dressing room,
05:11and, like, just cried, cried, and was like,
05:13Oh, my God, I don't want to do this show.
05:15I can't believe this happened.
05:16Number 21.
05:17Ruth Gordon.
05:18When Academy Award-winning actress and writer Ruth Gordon,
05:22then 80, hosted SNL,
05:24she and the young cast seemed unable to find their footing.
05:27I am ready for the not ready for prime time players.
05:32And how do you like this?
05:34Five will get you ten.
05:36I am ready.
05:37Take it easy.
05:38A theater veteran with decades of stage and screen experience,
05:42Gordon reportedly had little patience for the writer's irreverent humor
05:45and rejected nearly every pitch.
05:47Eventually, writers Al Franken and Tom Davis reportedly decided to test her boundaries
05:52with a particularly morbid idea, where Gordon played herself before dropping dead on live television.
05:58It was at that very moment, I said to myself,
06:01Lily, I never call myself Miss Lily, you know.
06:04I said to myself, Lily, if he can sell that crock to his own mother.
06:10Unsurprisingly, she refused.
06:13During the live broadcast, Gordon apparently interrupted performers and talked over their punchlines.
06:18Then, after the final credits rolled, she supposedly made a swift exit without mingling with the cast.
06:24Well, you know, a funny thing, things don't always work out that way.
06:28I actually did love what I was going to do.
06:30And, you know, it's a live show and we all stayed alive.
06:33You all, we all.
06:34That makes it nice.
06:35Need a palate cleanser from all the bad vibes?
06:38It's all, well, mostly love over on Ms. Mojo's 24-7 live stream.
06:43Scan the QR code on screen to join us for non-stop pop culture fun.
06:47Can we get right on that, please?
06:51Number 20, Morgan Wallen.
06:54Wallen's 2025 appearance didn't explode into a headline-grabbing feud,
06:59but it certainly set the rumor mill ablaze.
07:02How are you?
07:03Thank you so much to Morgan Wallen.
07:06I had a wonderful time. Thank you all.
07:09The country superstar created a buzz when he abruptly exited the stage during the live good nights.
07:14His subsequent cryptic Instagram posts did little to douse speculation,
07:19nor did his team's attempts at damage control, insisting there was no drama,
07:24especially after whispers surfaced that Joe Jonas was called in to step into a sketch Wallen allegedly refused to do.
07:31Believe in yourself. Believe in the line. You deserve this viral Greek yogurt.
07:39Or to try Lisa Renner's wine.
07:42Wallen later told an interviewer he was, quote, just ready to go home.
07:46I had been there all week. That doesn't exactly sound like something someone who had a good time might say,
07:52now does it?
07:52SNL. Did they make you mad?
07:55No. No, I was just ready to go home. I've been there all week.
07:58You had to get your plane. Get me to God's country.
08:01Yeah.
08:01Number 19. Jeremy Irons.
08:04Irons' 1991 hosting gig might not have set the ratings on fire, but behind the scenes, it created quite the
08:11storm.
08:11This is for me the most eventful week. Tonight I'm hosting Saturday Night Live and Monday,
08:18and let me just get this out of the way, I'll be at the Academy Awards having been nominated for
08:21Best Actor.
08:21Apparently, Irons clashed with the writing staff, most notably a young Bob Odenkirk.
08:27He was reportedly less than thrilled with the monologue penned by Odenkirk and Rob Schneider,
08:32and he let his displeasure be known in a tirade so memorable that Odenkirk actually recorded it for posterity.
08:39I can sing. I can do Shakespeare. I can juggle. I can do anything. And you have me do this!
08:47That tape has reportedly made the rounds among comedy insiders. In retrospect, Odenkirk admits the material was subpar,
08:56but credits Irons as a, quote, trooper for delivering it live.
08:59Still, it's safe to say that even Scar showed more subtlety when dishing out insults.
09:04I'm surrounded by idiots.
09:07Number 18. Paula Abdul
09:09Paula Abdul may not have hosted SNL, but her 2005 guest appearance is infamous for all the wrong reasons.
09:16Just ask Tina Fey.
09:18All right. Great sketch, you guys. I just have three notes.
09:21The sketch in question poked fun at tabloid rumors swirling around Abdul's American Idol tenure.
09:27Amy Poehler played the judge, even though the real Paula was right there on set.
09:31That odd choice was reportedly Abdul's own, much to the cast's exasperation.
09:36Amy, you need to perfect the clap a little more.
09:39Okay.
09:40And be a lot more sexier so that contestants will be willing to sleep with you.
09:44Fey didn't mince words, later describing the experience as, quote, awful and, quote, disastrous in the way she generally appears
09:52to be.
09:53Years later, Fey recalled locking eyes with Abdul on a plane and seeing her expression change with recognition,
09:59as though it brought back the less than pleasant memory. Cold hearted indeed.
10:07Number 17. Louis CK
10:10In 2019, Pete Davidson pulled back the curtain on one of his own uncomfortable experiences with a host.
10:16At the time, he was someone that you would look up to and want approval of.
10:20At the time.
10:24At the time, it was someone you wanted to be nice to you.
10:27During his standup special, he shared that Louis CK allegedly tried to get him fired.
10:33Davidson, who had looked up to this host as a comedy heavyweight,
10:36was blindsided when the host reportedly called a meeting with Lorne Michaels and other staff
10:41to air grievances about Pete's, um, recreational habits.
10:45And as I was leaving to go into the elevators,
10:49Louis CK was, like, holding court and talking to, like, a bunch of the cast and writers and, like, cool
10:55people.
10:55And, like, they were, like, clearly very into a conversation.
10:59Davidson was summoned to Lorne's office, bracing for the worst,
11:02but getting away with a very mild slap on the wrist at most.
11:05Again, I'm sorry to have this conversation with you, but Louis brought it to my attention
11:09and said, you know, you're smoking your career away
11:11and you smoked so much weed in the office the other day
11:14that it actually made him uncomfortable.
11:16The irony, of course, is that CK himself would soon face a very public reckoning
11:20over his own conduct.
11:22Number 16, Adrian Brody.
11:25Brody's one and only hosting gig is remembered for a single jaw-dropping moment
11:29that instantly entered the show's hall of infamy.
11:32You know, me got Sean Peter, you know, you got Sean Paul, you got Sean Mary, you got Sean John.
11:36The trouble peaked when Brody, without any heads-up to the writers or Lorne Michaels,
11:41introduced musical guest Sean Paul while sporting fake dreadlocks
11:45and delivering a painfully tone-deaf Jamaican patois accent for nearly a minute.
12:00That unscripted stunt was just the tip of the iceberg.
12:04Brody had apparently already spent the week shooting down sketch after sketch
12:07while pitching his own ideas that failed to land.
12:10But it was his rogue Sean Paul intro that sealed his fate,
12:14reportedly earning him a permanent spot on Lorne's unofficial blacklist.
12:19I give a big up, enough respect, I dance all players, you know?
12:22Like Sean John!
12:24Number 15, Martin Lawrence.
12:26When Lawrence took the SNL stage at the height of his sitcom stardom,
12:30no one could have predicted just how off the rails his monologue would go.
12:34I am so happy to be here, this is a dream come true for me.
12:37I mean, hosting a Saturday Night Live, I watched everybody, all of them on here,
12:41and I was like, when am I gonna get my chance? When am I gonna get my chance?
12:43But damn it, now it's my chance. Ain't no stopping me now.
12:47What began as a routine opener quickly spiraled into a graphic, unfiltered rant about feminine hygiene.
12:53Not only did SNL apparently ban him, but the network itself stepped in as well.
12:58Word is, Lawrence had already tested the material in rehearsal
13:02and had been warned to steer clear, but went rogue anyway.
13:06It's bothering me, man. You know, you can't say this, you can't say that.
13:10I'm like, well, how am I gonna talk about the world?
13:13The fallout backstage was palpable,
13:15with cast members reportedly uncomfortable and frustrated by his disregard for the rules.
13:20Phil Hartman is even said to have called it a betrayal,
13:23claiming Lawrence had, quote, stabbed us in the back.
13:26Well, look here, y'all, we got a great show for you tonight,
13:29because I'm here. That's right.
13:34I'm here.
13:36Yo, yo, crash test dummies are here.
13:38So, yo, we'll be back. Hang on. We gonna be back.
13:41We gonna do our thing.
13:43Number 14, Tom Green.
13:45If you want to guarantee a rocky start at SNL, try showing up with your own writers
13:50and treating the show like an extension of your personal brand.
13:53I mean, the stuff we wrote was really, really weird, you know?
13:58And, um, and, uh...
14:01Were you intent on making it weird?
14:02I think we were, yeah.
14:03Like, how weird can we make this? It's SNL, let's make it ours.
14:06I think so, I think so.
14:07Tom Green did just that, resulting in an episode that most fans would rather forget.
14:12Green's offbeat anarchic humor clashed with SNL's ensemble spirit.
14:17And according to cast member Horatio Sands, he seemed more invested in pushing his own agenda
14:22than collaborating with the team.
14:24Looks like the baby eagle flew out of the forest, and now he's going into the audience!
14:29Look at him go!
14:30Green himself later admitted he was, quote,
14:33aggressively trying to deconstruct everything that I encountered,
14:36a strategy that didn't exactly win hearts backstage.
14:39Still, to his credit, Green has expressed a willingness to try again, even if just to make amends.
14:45Yeah, I sort of understand how the system of it works now.
14:48And, um, and, uh, it would be, uh, you know, probably, you know, I probably would not have done that.
14:56Number 13, Kanye West.
14:59You know why Ye is here. We don't think anyone will ever forget.
15:03However, we're here to discuss those events from the perspective of the cast,
15:06some of whom reportedly walked off stage in protest.
15:09I was like, I don't want to be up here for this, because I don't agree with this.
15:14And standing up here looks like I'm standing in solidarity.
15:16So I was like, don't make any faces. Neutral face. Neutral face.
15:20Everyone's gotta know I'm just fulfilling my duties.
15:22Kenan Thompson later revealed that he felt like they had been, quote,
15:25held hostage while the rapper went rambling on,
15:28adding that he mostly felt bad for everyone who just had to stand there and endure it.
15:33Michael Che even confronted Kanye backstage during an interaction that later appeared in the documentary,
15:38in Who's name. Then there was Pete Davidson, who addressed the entire situation head on during Weekend Update with his
15:44usual brutally honest humor.
15:46Being mentally ill is not an excuse to act like a jackass. Okay. I'm quoting my therapist, my mom, and
15:56my mailman.
15:57Number 12. Robert Blake.
16:00Blake's hosting gig is a masterclass in how to alienate an entire writing staff in record time.
16:05I wanna say I've been a big fan of this show for many moons, and I'm glad they had me
16:09here.
16:10I don't know why, but I'm glad they had me here.
16:12Apparently, he rejected nearly every script handed to him,
16:15reportedly going so far as to crumple one up and hurl it back at writer Gary Kroger,
16:19complete with a few choice words about where he could stick it.
16:22That moment alone sealed Blake's reputation among the staff.
16:26Would you shut off the set? Shut the set up, thank you.
16:29Writer Tim Kazerinsky later joked that Blake became the benchmark for testing a host's sense of humor,
16:35while David Sheffield didn't hold back, calling him the, quote,
16:39worst host they'd ever had. For fans, this episode was a prelude to his later infamy,
16:44and it's no surprise he was never invited back.
16:46You should contact this man. His name is Tim Kazerinsky, and you can write to him in care of me.
16:52No, no. This, this is the cheapest thing you've ever done. This is the end.
16:59Number 11. Louise Lasserer
17:01There are plenty of SNL milestones to aspire to,
17:04but being the first host ever banned from the show probably isn't one of them.
17:08I wish I could tell you we had a great show for you, but I can't.
17:12No, it's not because of the show. I mean, the staff, everyone's great.
17:15It's just that I'm real tired. You may wonder why.
17:21That's the legacy Louise Lasser left after her one and only hosting gig in 1976.
17:26Behind the scenes, Lasser was reportedly unpredictable and difficult to work with,
17:31refusing to collaborate with certain cast members and frequently forgetting her lines.
17:35Her closing monologue didn't help matters, sealing her fate as SNL's original persona non grata.
17:42What a year, huh? I mean, this has been like the most incredible year for me.
17:47I mean, just so many things have happened to me and, you know, great and awful and…
17:52Looking back, we wonder whether she would have been met with a little more sympathy nowadays.
17:56Still, she has since admitted that her erratic behavior was a deliberate protest against sketches she wanted cut, but was
18:03forced to perform.
18:04The next thing I know, like, I'm in this jail, and they're questioning me, and they took pictures.
18:10I mean, not great pictures. Not terrible, though. I mean, not great, though.
18:14I mean, I wouldn't send him out his Christmas cards. That's pretty bad, right?
18:17Number 10. Donald Trump
18:19People think I'm controversial, but the truth is, I'm a nice guy.
18:24I don't hold grudges against anybody like Rosie O'Donnell.
18:31When Donald Trump hosted SNL in November 2015, he had only launched his presidential campaign a few months prior,
18:38and wasn't yet the Republican frontrunner.
18:41Nevertheless, the decision to have him host reportedly caused an uproar among the show's cast and writers
18:47because of his controversial statements.
18:50Hi, I'm Donald Trump, and I'll be hosting SNL with Sia.
18:53And the ratings are going to be huge.
19:00That's my Donald Trump.
19:01Former cast member Taryn Killam, who appeared with Trump in the opening monologue,
19:06later said Trump was, quote,
19:08not an enjoyable person to be around.
19:10He also called the decision to platform him, quote,
19:14embarrassing and shameful.
19:15It's really hard to have played a part in sort of encouraging or not even encouraging,
19:20but just offering a platform and promoting for someone who I find I'm constantly disappointed in.
19:27Additionally, it was reported in a book written by journalist Susan Morrison that writer and former cast member Tim Robinson
19:34said that showrunner Lorne Michaels had, quote,
19:37lost his mind for inviting Trump to host.
19:40Number nine, George Steinbrenner.
19:43The best SNL hosts show up as a blank slate and fully commit to whatever is thrown their way.
19:48The worst, like New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, do the exact opposite.
19:53By no reasonable definition of the word can I be considered an entertainer.
19:59I mean, I'm not going to wear a beard made of bees or drink kerosene and light my burps.
20:05No way.
20:07According to Conan O'Brien, who was a writer at the time, Steinbrenner came in with his own ideas of
20:13what he found personally funny.
20:15As a result, he shot down many of the staff's material and insisted on only doing what he liked.
20:21Unsurprisingly, the humor of a 60 year old businessman didn't have wide appeal.
20:25I think it's just that your performance has been...
20:29Well, Pete said that, uh, well...
20:33Yes, sir?
20:34Well, uh, how do you think you're doing here?
20:36As a result, most of the sketches fell flat, with Steinbrenner fumbling his way through them.
20:42The episode ended up being disliked, not just by the cast and writing staff, but also by the audience.
20:48What's the problem?
20:49Well, Lorne, what's the joke here? What's the point of this whole sketch?
20:52Well, it's a parody of the ultra slim fast commercials.
20:55I know that, but why am I up here with these guys? They're ruthless dictators. I'm a baseball owner.
21:00Uh-huh. No, I understand.
21:02Number eight, Frank Zappa.
21:04Just like George Steinbrenner, musician Frank Zappa apparently showed up to his hosting gig with a list of sketch ideas,
21:11and dished out orders to the cast and writers to develop them.
21:14Where did you meet our young man?
21:17I spotted her in the front row last night, and I knew she was really special.
21:21Throughout the episode, Zappa tossed his professionalism out the window,
21:25possibly because he felt hosting the show was beneath him.
21:28This behavior began during rehearsals, but got even worse during the live telecast.
21:34Zappa spent the entire night making funny faces at the camera, which was a huge distraction to the cast,
21:39and even ad-libbing lines.
21:42Why don't the three of us get into my limo, drive down to LA together, and take this opportunity to
21:49really get down and rap?
21:51It was almost like he was deliberately trying to ruin the sketches.
21:54By the end, the cast was pissed off.
21:57Lauren Michaels was furious, and Zappa was banned from ever returning to the show.
22:01Frank, like, you really don't get high, do you?
22:05No, I don't do drugs. I just don't like the effects it has on some people.
22:14Number 7. Andrew Dice Clay
22:17Hey, get out of my face, all right? Can you see I wish I'd never been born?
22:22You've got your wish, Diceman. You've never been born.
22:26In the late 80s and early 90s, comedian Andrew Dice Clay made a name for himself with his controversial brand
22:32of humor.
22:33When he was billed to host SNL in May 1990, the network even instituted a five-to-seven-second delay
22:39out of concern for his famously foul mouth.
22:42You see, the only other time I wore this jacket...
22:45Go away! Go away!
22:48All right, snap ahead, sit down, shut your mouth, and pay attention, all right?
22:53Some of the cast members also had their own concerns, most notably Nora Dunn, who objected to Clay's sexist, racist,
23:00and homophobic jokes.
23:02On principle, she refused to appear in the episode.
23:05Can I say something? I'd like to risk something.
23:07Good, good.
23:09Alex, I really care about you. I like you.
23:15But sometimes I have this fear that you're going to find out where I live and come late at night
23:20and assault me.
23:21This also led the scheduled musical guest, Sinead O'Connor, to drop out as well.
23:26It was the first and only time a cast member had taken such a stand, and it reportedly led to
23:31Dunn's contract not being renewed for the following season.
23:35We were well known as the worst cast of 1985.
23:38Really?
23:39Well, I didn't think we were coming back.
23:42Number 6. Milton Berle
23:44When he hosted SNL in 1979, long after his days as the face of Texaco's star theater, Milton Berle was
23:51a celebrated figure in comedy.
23:52But that meant he arrived with a huge ego, which he forgot to check at the door.
23:56Ladies and gentlemen, I was asked by the producer of this show to...
24:00What the hell?
24:04NBC just dropped another show.
24:06I, uh...
24:07All week, Berle was reportedly condescending to the cast members, questioning their comedic chops and insisting his own ideas were
24:15the only ones worth using.
24:17Then, during the telecast, he allegedly tried to upstage the cast and slipped in old comedy bits that no one
24:24had rehearsed.
24:25Lift up the coat.
24:27The coat is up.
24:31The coat is up.
24:33I can't see.
24:35I can't see it.
24:36He even reportedly flashed writer Alan Zweibel and cast member Gilda Radner in his dressing room.
24:42After capping the show with an arranged standing ovation for himself, Lorne Michaels banned him from ever hosting again.
24:50And I'd like to say, give me a live audience like you for the rest of my career.
24:56Thank you very, very much.
24:59Thank you very, very much.
25:02Number five.
25:03Justin Bieber.
25:04The Biebs had a notorious reputation in the early 2010s for his public behavior.
25:08That behavior seemed to spill over when he hosted SNL in 2013.
25:13It's like my dumb parents.
25:14Like, nobody understands me, bruh.
25:17That's why I totally threw that clay portrait at my mother.
25:21Then she called the cops on me.
25:22According to former cast member Bill Hader, Justin Bieber lived up to every bit of the hype, and not in
25:29a good way, calling him the worst behaved host he saw during his tenure on the show.
25:33Yeah, Bieber was, yeah, he just was in a bad place.
25:37Maybe he's in a better place, but then he was in a very, it was rough.
25:41Bieber reportedly came surrounded by an entourage so huge, they made it impossible for the team to actually talk to
25:48him and build the sketches.
25:49The consequences of that were painfully evident in the live telecast.
25:53Bieber looked terribly unprepared and often resorted to winking at the audience whenever a sketch started to tank.
25:59How am I supposed to compete with this? Look at his gentle face, Papa. It's flawless. Who would not fall
26:11in love?
26:11Number 4. Paris Hilton
26:13During Paris Hilton's hosting gig in 2005, Seth Meyers placed a bet with his fellow cast members.
26:19He'd give a hundred bucks to anyone who Hilton asked a personal question. Turns out he got to keep his
26:25money.
26:25No one could really get Paris Hilton, our host, to engage in any personal conversations.
26:30We realized she hadn't asked any of us a personal question, and this one said the first person she asks
26:36a personal question, I'll give a hundred bucks.
26:38Yeah.
26:38Didn't ask one person.
26:40No.
26:40Indeed, Hilton's unbothered energy was glaring throughout the week, as she showed very little desire to engage with the cast.
26:47According to Tina Fey, Hilton was a real piece of work, who took herself too seriously and barely put any
26:53effort into the sketches.
26:54Does Doctor Who turn you on, baby?
26:57Well, I'm getting into my TARDIS right now.
26:59Ooh, I better put on my big floppy hat and scarf.
27:04I hope I don't find any Daleks here.
27:06The writers apparently noticed this and adjusted the sketches so she wouldn't appear long enough to tank them.
27:12It's no surprise then that she is regarded as one of the worst hosts in the show's history.
27:16What the hell are you doing in Switzerland?
27:19Oh, I've been coming here forever.
27:21I made it hot.
27:22Hold on a minute, hot stuff.
27:24I've been coming here forever.
27:25I'm the one who made it hot.
27:27Number three.
27:28Elon Musk.
27:29Just like his political ally, Donald Trump, the announcement that Elon Musk would host SNL wasn't well received by the
27:36show's cast.
27:37To anyone I've offended, I just want to say I reinvented electric cars and I'm sending people to Mars in
27:42a rocket ship.
27:48Did you think I was also going to be a chill normal dude?
27:53Their feelings didn't improve after the episode.
27:55If anything, they got worse.
27:57In an August 2024 interview, Bowen Yang revealed that an unnamed male host once made multiple cast members cry during
28:04the table read because he hated their ideas.
28:07A few months later, Chloe Fineman confirmed that the host in question was Musk, explaining that he had ridiculed a
28:14script she wrote for him.
28:15I see my producer Ragnarok is trying to get my attention.
28:18What's wrong? Did I mess up?
28:21You? Ha ha ha ha. Never.
28:25I just can't hold it any longer, Uli. I'm in love with you.
28:29Musk later admitted on Twitter that he lashed out because he was worried his SNL appearance would be unfunny.
28:35Well, he wasn't wrong and it wasn't necessarily for a lack of good material.
28:39Is it true, as many have put forward today, that you are evil?
28:46No, I am not evil. I just misunderstood.
28:50Number two, Chevy Chase.
28:52I just want to say that my friends, the people who put on Saturday night, even since I've been gone
28:57before or after, still put on the best damn comedy show on the air.
29:02It's an unfortunate irony that one of SNL's original breakout stars, Chevy Chase, became one of its most reviled hosts.
29:10After leaving the show in its second season, he returned to host eight times, each appearance more contentious than the
29:16last.
29:17You come back, you give Danny some story about his mother dying, try to pull the same thing on me,
29:22just to take over so you can satisfy your inflated ego.
29:25We'll go back to Hollywood and do it, cause it won't work here.
29:29Will Ferrell called Chase the worst host ever, as he often yelled at them and made inappropriate comments to female
29:36staffers.
29:37He also targeted Terry Sweeney, the first openly gay cast member, with so many homophobic remarks that Lorne Michaels forced
29:44him to apologize.
29:45Well, I just want to thank you, Johnny, wherever you are, for giving me my first big break. I owe
29:52it all to you, Johnny. Now eat my dust!
29:57Most infamously, Chase and Bill Murray got into an actual fistfight in 1978, just moments before Chase was set to
30:05deliver the opening monologue.
30:07Chase hasn't hosted since 1997, and the cast probably sleeps better for it.
30:12Thank you so much for getting me a ride on Chopper Claw.
30:15I don't think it's actually going to be a ride, but maybe you could sit in it while it's on
30:17the ground.
30:18Oh, sit in it, it will do. Thank you very much, Mr. Kevin Eddy, thank you.
30:21Okay, no problem. Yeah, out!
30:22Gotta get going, take care.
30:24Number one, Steven Seagal.
30:26Depending on what era they were on the show, cast members tend to give different answers when asked who the
30:31worst SNL host was.
30:33But nearly everyone who was around when Steven Seagal hosted agrees that he deserves that title.
30:38I hope you'll forgive me for being a little bit serious, but it's important to me to let you know
30:43that there's a lot more to Steven Seagal than the martial arts.
30:47Tim Meadows recalled that Seagal didn't understand the jokes and criticized the cast and writing staff.
30:52Likewise, David Spade shared that Seagal took himself way too seriously and never followed the plan, which often ended with
31:00him arguing with everyone on set.
31:02Listen, son, I know that you think that I may be a little bit old fashioned or something like that,
31:07but I have something that I'd kind of like to show you that has great significance to me.
31:11Spade even remembers producers debating, for the first time ever, whether they should replace the host altogether.
31:18Apparently, the only person who thought Steven Seagal did a great job on the show and was loved by everyone
31:23was Steven Seagal.
