Kingstanding flags return after being taken down

The flags at Kingstanding Circle have been put back up after being removed, reigniting the debate around the Raise the Flags movement. Supporters say the displays are about patriotism and national pride, while critics argue they can be divisive. With Brownhills considering a more permanent memorial-style solution, some are asking whether Kingstanding should now do the same. Watch the video for the full story and the arguments on both sides.

00:00The flags at King Standing Circle are back less than a day after a rival group removed almost the entire
00:05display from the Birmingham roundabout.
00:08The latest removal happened on Saturday with reports saying all but one of the taller flagpoles was taken away.
00:14Union Flags and St George's Crosses had become a familiar sight there as part of the wider Raise the Colours
00:21movement
00:21which describes the displays as a celebration of patriotism, unity and national pride.
00:26But the campaign has also proved divisive.

00:42Birmingham City Council has previously said unauthorised flags attached to street furniture are not permitted and can be removed
00:49citing safety, maintenance and community cohesion.
00:53The argument is not simply about whether flags should be flown but who decides where they go and how public
00:59spaces are used.
01:01Nearby Brownells has taken a different approach.
01:03Warsaw Council works with local representatives on a managed permanent display at Minor Island
01:09with purpose-built flagpoles for the Union Jack, St George's Cross and the Black Country flag.
01:15More permanent poles were added during the summer but that's renewed the question of whether King Standing
01:21could eventually adopt a managed arrangement rather than repeatedly seeing unofficial displays removed and then replaced.
