Bruins PBP Judd Sirott joins! Thoughts on Frozen Frenzy? Is Fraser Minten hot streak sustainable?
Transcript
00:01it's it's a challenge trying to get adjusted i mean i think you could see that a little bit
00:05uh in the bruins game uh in that first one against san jose i think that's part of the
00:10reason why a lot of teams including the bruins will fly out a day early if they have the opportunity
00:15and if the schedule allows it to try and help them adjust but not only do you have the three
00:20hour time change but the other night because the bruins were the last game in the frozen frenzy
00:24now you've got an 8 15 puck drop which is a little bit different but um even though there might
00:30have
00:30been some bumpy moments they were able to outscore some of their issues they've got 17 goals here in
00:36their last three games and they got the trip started right yeah i mean that's that's three in a row
00:41for
00:41this team and i certainly understand the frozen frenzy and the uh the reason that they did it
00:48it was just for you know back here that game starting at 11 15 is uh was no go for
00:54a lot of
00:55people so well no that's true but you say that greg and uh i don't have the full numbers from
01:01nesson
01:01but uh even marco stern had asked me uh when we got off the plane yesterday how many people watched
01:06that game and i can tell you that uh the people over at nesson were really happy with the impressions
01:12they got and people just watching on the app i don't have the linear numbers yeah but um it was
01:18well attended on the air in boston what what's impressed you the most we always talk about going
01:23on like west coast trips and teams having to play those types of games what what has impressed you
01:28the most so far um with the way the bruins have been able to kind of handle the west coast
01:33trip and
01:34win these games well i i think one of the things that stands out for me wiki is the balance
01:39that
01:40they've played with here early in the season um and i think that that has really helped so you know
01:45the first few games of the year marco stern has um one set of line combinations one set of deep
01:51pairs
01:51now obviously charlie mcavoy uh changes some of the pairs and we can talk about that a little bit
01:56as we go along but the other thing that he sort of rejiggered up front were some of his line
02:01combinations and uh i think what you're now seeing is with zock in the middle with geeky imposter
02:08knock and then you've got uh peterka now playing with mitten and hoose the dean of and hagan's having an
02:14opportunity with a couple of veterans uh like elias lindholm and casey middlestad that you've
02:20got some serious balance to your group but i think from marco stern's perspective you also have and
02:25this is what i think helped him the other night is that you have some understanding of how to play
02:29the game at a 200 foot level and because of that you've gotten results uh judd when you look at
02:35fraser minton uh the last two games for him have been incredible he's already looking like a top six
02:40center the 50 million dollars seems to be paying off is this sustainable for him for the entire
02:46season that's a really good question corny um i think that's one of the things that we're going
02:51to have to watch i i think you know even the scouting report on a guy like fraser mint and
02:56now
02:56is listen he's really responsible and he understands the game and how to play that
03:01full 200 foot game that that made patrice bergeron such a great player but i think that the one thing
03:08that was the question mark was how much would he be able to score so last year now you know
03:14he shifted
03:15around a little bit and he did play with david posturnock at times but he still cranked out 17
03:19goals uh so he ranked what eighth among rookies in both goals and points so could he take that up
03:26to
03:26another level could he take that up to 20 or 25 and i i think that of of all the
03:32players and again
03:33were early in the season that has sort of jumped off the ice that you've really noticed it's
03:38fraser mint whether it's his footwork his speed his shot um so that's that's a really good question
03:46courtney and that's something we're watching you can he take it from 17 to somewhere in the mid-20s
03:51and maybe beyond when you look at swayman right we we've kind of all feel like all right you know
03:57from what we've seen from him this kid is a great goalie is this the expectation for him as a
04:04player
04:04for you know as long as he's here with the bruins like you have an elite goaltender is that the
04:10expectations of him between the pipes night in and night out for the next five six seven years
04:17yes no he's a franchise cornerstone wiki uh and just look at the game now you want to talk about
04:22um you know how the bruins navigate uh the west coast trip especially that first game
04:28he was fabulous i know fraser mitten had a couple of goals uh in that victory but jeremy swam and
04:34saved the bruins bacon early in the first early in the second and even early in the third they had
04:40a couple of bumpy moments but he has been exceptional to start the season um and now he's starting to
04:47link
04:47that together last year he was a vesna trophy finalist for the first time in his national hockey
04:52league career uh and and with goalies as they get older and remember this is only his seventh season
04:58uh with the bruins and in the national hockey league they're going to get better as they go along
05:03so the way he has started and i think that the growth that you're still going to be able to
05:08see
05:08in his game he's one of the best goalies in the world uh texter would like to know what you
05:13think
05:13marco stern does with the goalies with the back-to-back this weekend well with the way swam and is
05:19playing
05:20and it's a really good question because the goaltender rotation i think is something we're
05:23going to have to watch all season long um you're going to play a really good anaheim team uh a
05:28team
05:28that in many ways is reminiscent of san jose but they're better and they made the playoffs last year
05:33i would expect swayman uh to get the start against the ducks and then you've got a back-to-back
05:38set
05:38against the team and in the kings that has really struggled i would expect that mikey di pietro gets
05:44that start you see swayman in dallas uh and then you know we'll we'll see how it goes along because
05:51it may be opponent and schedule dictated for a guy like di pietro in addition to see how swayman is
05:58playing um but one of the benefits of this schedule even though there are two more games because it's a
06:03not an olympic year the games are spaced out a little bit more so it gives the bruins an opportunity
06:09to play swayman a little bit more but they don't want to overtax him has has uh darnell nurse recovered
06:17enough to know what his name is yet or uh those are some big overhand rights coming and darnell nurse
06:23is a tough customer but uh nikita fedorov is six foot seven with that long reach and he's so strong
06:31um nurse i know had to leave for some repairs and then came back late in that game but uh
06:37that was
06:37pretty impressive yeah it was it was awesome it was uh old time hockey yes i love it judd when
06:44you
06:44start to look at pasta right and we i think we touched on this a little bit last week when
06:49we
06:49talked to you about you know maybe him getting back to that goal scorer but he's still putting up points
06:55is this kind of like the new is this like the new pasta we're going to see was where maybe
07:01he doesn't
07:01score as many goals uh but he becomes more of the playmaker or are we going to see pasta get
07:07back to
07:07where he's you know that 40 plus goal scorer i think it's going to be somewhere in the middle
07:12um uh listen he's admitted always wiki that if he sees somebody in a better position than he is
07:20he's going to pass the puck it's just the way he's built and actually i do think it's a good
07:24thing
07:25wiki because now if you're a goalie or if you're uh like the sharks or the anaheim ducks who they're
07:31going to see now how do you defend him because if he's just a shooter uh i think that the
07:38forwards
07:38and the defensemen can defend him a little bit differently and the goalies look at him a little
07:42bit differently but if all of a sudden you think of him as much more of a dynamic playmaker now
07:48you've
07:48got some problems i remember having a conversation um here you want to throw this on the sick brag
07:53there's a kiss a kid named josh morrissey who's a really good defenseman uh for uh the winnipeg jets and
07:59he said with the way david posternak is if you're even just one foot away from him he's still a
08:06threat to score you have to be even closer than that because of his ability to either shoot
08:12pass or beat you one-on-one um so i think it's going to be somewhere in the middle uh
08:18but it's
08:19also dependent on who he is playing with and i think um putting him back with morgan geeky and
08:25and uh pavel zaka i think that's elevated his game all right judd night off tonight what's on
08:31the itinerary uh it's gonna gonna be low-key tonight uh played a little golf with brick yesterday
08:39and adam tolerance so we had a chance to get out and play brick was dj and uh it was
08:44tremendous
08:44that's always a treat yeah when you get a chance to see it and by the way he had a
08:47great sandy on 18
08:48but um gonna lay low here tonight get ready for the ducks fun day was yesterday uh so who who
08:57paid
08:57who money was not exchanged just some laughs disneyland today judd uh you know what i don't know if i
09:07could squeeze in space not we'll see all right judd surat thanks for getting up this morning and we
09:13will talk to you again next week all right take care
